Women's Leadership Tea

(L-R) Kimberly Caudle Lewis, co-chair of the UNCF North Alabama Campaign; honoree Jacqueline K. Kanion; Cheri Wilson, executive director of Advancement & Development; and Brenda M. Martin, chair of the UNCF Women's Leadership Tea.

The Division of Advancement & Development hosted almost 100 women at the annual UNCF Women's Leadersh ip Tea, held on November 12, at The Ledges of Huntsville B allroom.

As guests were seated, a trio of Oakwood students, Esther Benjamin, Joy Gullo and Arielle Rush, expertly played classical music on string instruments. Melissa Summers of WJOU 90.1 FM served as the Mistress of Ceremonies, and urged the women in the audience to relax and have fun.

The entire event was one of  delightful conversation, inspiration, delicious goodies, and beautiful art. The art project was led by Jyremy Reid, who instructed the group to paint just a section on a canvas. The finished product was revealed at the end of the afternoon.

The UNCF Women's Leadership Philanthropist Award was presented to Mrs. Jacqueline K. Kanion of Kansas City, Missouri, for her exemplary philanthropic support of students at UNCF member institution, Oakwood University.

Under Jyremy Reid's instruction, each participant painted a small section of the two canvasses. Bringing the two canvasses together shows that when everyone contributes what they can, together, we can empower the lives of students.

For more than 70 years, the UNCF has raised more than $4.7 billion to help more than 445,0000 students attend and graduate from college. The next fundraising event on the UNCF North Alabama Campaign is the 40th annual UNCF Gala, scheduled for March 29, 2018.

Operation Safe Travel, Safe Return - Returns as Part of Public Safety Day

Presiding Judge Lonzo Robinson of the Municipal Court of Huntsville is the guest speaker for Chapel on Public Safety Day.
On Thursday, November 16, the Oakwood University Police Department (OUPD) is sponsoring Public Safety Day.

Activities include a special Chapel service, with Presiding Judge Lonzo Robinson of the Municipal Court of Huntsville as the speaker.

Immediately following Chapel, the annual "Operation Safe Travel, Safe Return" will be held on E.C. Ward Way, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For the tenth consecutive year, OUPD will be sponsoring this event in partnership with Express Oil Change, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and Thompson Hospitality.

"Operation Safe Travel, Safe Return" provides vehicle inspections and fluid-topoffs for students who will be traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday. The program has been such a huge success that faculty, staff, and community friends have been invited to participate in recent years.

Every year vehicle inspections have brought to light balding tires, broken headlights, and low fluid levels. It's not uncommon to find vehicles with only one (1) quart of oil about to embark on a 12-hour trip! Even though repairs are not done, all fluids are filled to their proper levels, and recommendations are given for mechanical repairs at great discounts.

Parents have expressed overwhelming appreciation for this annual service. Melvin  Harris, Chief of OUPD, states that the institution is "not only concerned with the safety of our students on campus, but off campus as well as they travel over the holiday season." OUPD officers are present and go from car to car distributing travel safety brochures, giving advice on getting plenty of rest, and praying with participants.

So, if you are in Huntsville and are planning on a road trip for Thanksgiving, be sure to stop by to have your vehicle inspected.  An ounce of prevention...
Nathan L. Anderson Memorial Scholarships Awarded

The Nathan L. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. completed the calendar year 2017 Scholarship Awards Cycle, providing scholarship assistance to 12 Oakwood University (OU) students.  Funding assistance was provided to: Joanna Barker, Aaron Budd, Mykel Robinson-Collins, Melina Combs, Cleavon Davis, Sarah Desgazon, Tasheana George, Xavier Lynum, Princeton Meredith, Imri Starks, Tarik Townsend, and Gabrielle Watson.

The Nathan L. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Foundation is a small, independent, 501(c) (3) private foundation incorporated in April, 2010, in memory of Nathan L. Anderson, '05. Led by Drs. Gerald and Ruby Anderson, the Foundation is focused on providing scholarship support to minority students who are US Citizens and are pursuing bachelor degrees in computer science, nursing, music, and aviation.
Although the Foundation does provide scholarship assistance to approved applicants from other colleges and universities, applications from OU students receive a higher priority level of consideration, as long as the applicants meet the Foundation's published criteria.

Total scholarship assistance provided by the Foundation to OU students during Calendar Year 2017 amounted to $20,000. Of the $163,000 in foundation scholarship awards for the six years, the total Foundation scholarship support to OU students over the six-year period is $108,250, approximately 67%.

The foundation is funded primarily by donations given in memory of Nathan, and from proceeds of a dual CD set of Nathan's music "Love Lifted Me," available online at iTunes, Amazon.com,  and CD Baby. Further information regarding donations, scholarship eligibility, or CD sales is found at http://www.rememberingnathananderson.com
Career Fair
by Bresean Davidson, intern, Office of Integrated Marketing & Public Relations

This past Monday on November 13, Oakwood University hosted its annual Career Fair in the Millet Activity Center. Students from all classifications and majors had the opportunity to brush up on their communication skills and receive helpful feedback from the visiting company representatives.

Possible internship opportunities and career prospects were also available to qualified students. Students were encouraged to dress professionally and have their resumes ready for the representatives from companies all over the Tennessee Valley.

In hopes of encouraging students to look forward to and start planning their future careers, the Oakwood staff and volunteers offered words of encouragement to the students who were nervous about meeting some of the representatives. The atmosphere at the Career Fair was a very light and open space, where you didn't feel cramped together in a small area, that can sometimes happen at fairs like this one.

I was able to visit quite a few booths, including the Huntsville Hospital and NASA booths, which both showed interest in student interns and workers for the upcoming year. After talking with the reps while handing off my resume for possible connections, leaving the building, I felt confident and well informed about my career options for the future. I only wish the fair had run a little longer for the learning experience alone. My word of advice as a graduating senior: take advantage of the resources that Oakwood provides, you won't be angry that you did in the end.
