Oakwood Marks Beginning of New School Year
To signify the beginning of a new semester, the Oakwood community, including students, administration, faculty and staff, as well as the students from Oakwood Adventist Academy, participated in the annual University Convocation service on August 31, at the Oakwood University Church. T
he purpose of the program is to renew the institutional commitment of the Oakwood University mission within the administrative team, University employees and students.
President Pollard's address to the assembly was entitled "The Power of a People United." A brief remembrance segment of the program recognized the lives and service of former employees, Elder Jonathan Thompson and Dr. Camille Warren-Hill. During the anointing service,
University chaplains and local pastors were available with small bottles of oil to anoint and pray with all who wish to renew their faith for the upcoming year.

Employee recruiting topped the agenda at the "Taking the Pentagon to the People" workshop at Oakwood University Aug. 30, and the Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) was very much part of the dialogue. Mark Moe, director of the Supportability and Sustainment Directorate at the AMCOM Logistics Center, took the lead in sharing with Oakwood University students the opportunities AMCOM has for college students nearing graduation. The AMCOM Logistics Center hires about 50 recent college graduates each year. Moe's presentation on Logistics Career Opportunities at a Life-Cycle Management Command was part of a two-day workshop at Oakwood University's McKee Business & Technology Complex that focused on federal employment opportunities for college students. The "Taking the Pentagon to the People" program is managed through the Department of Defense Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity. It is an outreach to students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions. "We have a global mission managed right here from Redstone Arsenal," Moe said. "It's hard to recruit graduates from outside the Southeast. So we are very interested in graduates from colleges like Oakwood University because you are interested in staying here and because you have so much talent to offer." The AMCOM Logistics Center hires college graduates through the Department of the Army Logistics Intern Program. Visit the site http://www.cascom.army.mil/S_Staff/clcmo/da_intern.htm

Oakwood University Church Celebrates 40 Years
The Oakwood University Church will celebrate 40 years in its current church edifice on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. The celebration will feature the music of Grammy Award-winning Christian Artist, Sandi Patty, the Oakwood University Aeolians (recently voted 2017 Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales), the Oakwood University Orchestra, and the preaching of Dr. Carlton P. Byrd, Speaker/Director of Breath of Life Television Ministries.
This worship service will highlight 40 years of ministry to the Oakwood University campus, the Huntsville Community, and the world at large. Alumni who attended Oakwood in the mid-1970s will remember the march from the Ashby Auditorium to the current church edifice, under the leadership of then Senior Pastor, Eric. C. Ward. Pastors following Elder Ward include Dr. Leslie Pollard, Dr. John Nixon, Dr. Craig Newborn, and Dr. Carlton Byrd.
The current 3,000-seat sanctuary the church has hosted guest musical artists such as Babbie Mason, Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Richard Smallwood and Vision, Smokie Norful, and now Sandi Patty. It has honored notable public officials and celebrities including Congressman John Lewis, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Sybrina Fulton (mother of Trayvon Martin), Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and Judge Greg Mathis - all of whom have made significant contributions to serve humanity and improve the lives of all people.
Since 2012, the Oakwood University Church has been the home of Breath of Life Television Ministries, which broadcasts nationally and internationally. In 2016, it provided a backdrop for a nationally broadcast Easter special, "The Rising," for ABC television.
