School of Business Healthcare Students Attend ACHE Conference
by Richard Blanco-Topping, assistant professor of Healthcare Administration

Earlier this month, students in the School of Business' Healthcare Administration club, Future Healthcare Leaders of Tomorrow, traveled to Birmingham, to attend Alabama's Third Annual Healthcare Summit, accompanied by Richard Blanco-Topping, assistant professor of Healthcare Administration.

The event was open to Alabama legislators, healthcare leaders, clinicians, and students in healthcare programs, and was hosted by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Alabama chapter, the Alabama Hospital Association, Alabama HFMA, Alabama HIMSS, and MGMA.

During the conference, different panels discussed issues related to healthcare changes in the state, such as the importance of data analytics and population health, healthcare insurance and payers challenges, and healthcare leaders' perspective around the delivery of care in Alabama.

Among other Alabama legislators who participated on the panels, were Senators Gregg Reed (Senate Majority Leader), Jim McClendon (Senate Health Chair Committee), and Anthony Daniels (House Minority Leader).

Oakwood's School of Business students were able to comment with healthcare leaders about the topics discussed during the summit. According to the students, it was an excellent opportunity to meet with leaders from the healthcare industry and to be educated about Alabama's healthcare climate. After attending the summit, the students are looking forward to raising funds to attend the ACHE Annual Congress, scheduled to take place in Chicago, during March 2018.

A "Chemistry Night" to Remember
by Dr. Steven Lai Hing, associate professor of Chemistry

On Monday evening, October 24, more than 50 families from the Huntsville and Oakwood community converged on classroom 233 at the Cooper Complex in the Chemistry Department, for the 27th annual North Alabama Kids Trek MENSA Chemistry Night at Oakwood University.

The children started in the classroom where they had a demonstration from chemist Dale Hutchens of the 3M Company, who performed several experiments using liquid nitrogen. The fun then moved to the main chemistry lab where the children had their choice of several experiments and exhibits including slime, density, rocket canisters, milk that stirs itself, and floating spheres.

Also in attendance were representatives from Huntsville STEAM Works, a local, non-profit, educational startup company centered on education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). The night allowed the kids to be scientists and rewarded their curiosity and drive to learn.

The next departmental outreach event is Science Day, scheduled for February 20, 2018.

The Stewards of Children Training Program
by Danica Antoine

Forty-three students took part in the first Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training Program on October 15, 2017, hosted by the Social Work Department. The two-hour workshop is entitled: "Darkness to Light's Stewardship of Children," and is conducted by  Catherine DeCarl, '17. Participants received a certificate at the conclusion of the training.

The vision of the program is to have a world free of child sexual abuse, a world in which all children are loved, protected, nurtured and able to grow up healthy with their sexual boundaries intact. The presentation provided five ways on how to skillfully protect a child from sexual abuse and the importance of knowing these five steps:
  1. learning the facts,
  2. minimize opportunity,
  3. talk about it,
  4. recognize the signs, and
  5. react responsibly.

The aim of the program is to increase community awareness of the prevalence of child sexual abuse, and to empower the community to report incidences of child abuse to the appropriate authorities. "Without empowerment, we limit our ability to take action," Ms. DeCarl stated.

CDL Students Learn about Healthy Plates & Exercise

On Thursday of Healthy Campus Week last month, the  students at the Child Development Lab learned to STANDOUT by focusing on the N (for Nutrition) and the U (Use Exercise) in the STANDOUT acronym.

Dr. Shirna Gullo, director of Healthy Campus 2020, spoke to the children about standing out like Daniel and the importance of exercise. The students moved around to the song Father Abraham, played with hula hoops, chased bubbles, played with mini-STANDOUT frisbees, jumped, skipped, and more.

Teymi-Elise Herring, a registered dietitian and graduate student Anderson Marin, M.D., who is preparing to become a registered dietitian, taught the children about MyPlate. The students were engaged as they talked about the different fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. They also had an opportunity to come to the front of the room in groups to build a healthy plate (pictured).
