CITY ISSUES TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR GERT TOWN
NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City of New Orleans issued a traffic advisory to temporarily close a portion of Drexel Drive and Washington Avenue in Gert Town near Xavier University. The City is currently constructing an elevated pedestrian bridge over Washington Avenue, the Washington Avenue Drainage Canal and Drexel Drive.

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, Drexel Drive between South Carrollton and Short streets will be closed to traffic between 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. The closure will allow the construction contractor to pour the concrete deck portion of the elevated pedestrian bridge over Drexel Drive.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, Washington Avenue between South Carrollton and Short streets will be closed to through traffic between 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. The closure will allow the construction contract to pour the concrete deck portion of the elevated pedestrian bridge over Washington Avenue.

All lane closures associated with the construction of the Washington Avenue Pedestrian Bridge are being closely coordinated with Xavier University.

The approximately $3 million Washington Avenue Pedestrian Bridge project was designed by Burk Kleinpeter. The construction contract was awarded to Command Construction. Construction began late in 2014 and is scheduled to last through 2015.

Residents should exercise caution when driving, bicycling or walking near active construction sites.

CITY ISSUES GARDEN DISTRICT TRAFFIC NOTICE

Camp Street between Louisiana Avenue and Washington Avenue
to be converted to one-way

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City of New Orleans issued a traffic notice for the Garden District. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at approximately 9 a.m., the road segment of Camp Street between Louisiana Avenue and Washington Avenue will be converted from its current two-way directional status to one-way operation in the downtown bound direction (from Louisiana Avenue toward Washington Avenue) for the 2800-3300 blocks of Camp Street.

This trial modification will be enacted to alleviate residents' concerns about the width of the street and its ability to safely handle two-way traffic. A survey was mailed to nearby residents asking for feedback on the proposed traffic change. Eighty-seven percent of the respondents were in favor of the change to one-way traffic.

In order to improve traffic flow in the neighborhood, the City will post signs designating this segment of road as one-way. This conversion is being done a six month trial basis. During that time, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) will monitor the effects of the change before a final determination is made.

Questions about this project may be directed to DPW at (504) 658-8046.

Fresh & Local
Our 20th anniversary Moonlight Market fundraiser brought together friendly faces from around the community, all beaming with delight from the delicious food and drinks provided by some of our generous rock star chef friends. Not long before that, we came together to remember 20 years of our Saturday market. The good times keep on rolling! This Wednesday, we're celebrating one year at our French Market location in the Quarter. Join us for cooking demos, live music, local goods and more all market long. And be sure to take advantage of the 2 hours of free parking provided by the French Market. See you
there!

Pick of the Week:
French Pickl'er
Love is in the air and pickles are in the jars . We wish our dear friends Kelle and Daniel the best on their freshly minted marriage. While we were surrounding ourselves with good food and friends at the Moonlight Market, they were getting hitched! Kelle and Daniel are dedicated members of the Crescent City Farmers Market, providing us with scrumptious pickled treats for every occasion. Beyond that, they are warm, kind, friendly faces that you can find at our Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday markets. Be sure to stop by their table this week to congratulate them and sample some of their jarred gems.
Tuesday's Green Plate Special
It's undeniable, Red Gravy loves the Crescent City Farmers Market and we love them! The chef and staff have come out to market for ages, so we're happy to have them doing what they do best right in front of our eyes. As our Green Plate Special vendors for the month of October, they've started off with a bang. Here's their delectable menu from last week:
* Hand-rolled meatballs with Red Gravy on Don Phoung French bread
* Penne pasta with pancetta, Butternut squash, peas and cream topped with amaretti
* Insalate Mercante (market salad)
* and Cannoli for dessert
Be sure to come out Tuesday and grab a plate!

Recipe of the Week
Jared Tees first made a name for himself during his tenure at Commander's Palace where he worked under the legendary Chef Jamie Shannon. When Jared was the executive chef at the Bourbon House, he was inspired by the nonastringent green Fuyu persimmons that appear annually at the farmers market to create this contemporary salad . It is quite striking when served in a long-stemmed martini glass. Apple cider vinegar can be substituted for cane vinegar.

Ingredients
  • 4 green Fuyu persimmons
  • 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat
  • 4 fresh chives, snipped
  • 4 teaspoons local honey
  • 4 teaspoons cane vinegar
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Remove core from persimmons, then julienne persimmons using a sharp Japanese mandoline slicer-or use a very sharp knife and cut the persimmons into matchstick-size sticks.
Combine persimmons, crabmeat, chives, honey, vinegar, lime juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl; toss to mix.
Spoon into cocktail glasses to serve.

2015 Coffee and Conversation Event #2:

Times Picayune Reporter John Pope Talks about His New Book:

Getting Off at Elysian Fields

METAIRIE, LA - John Pope, a long-time reporter with The New Orleans Times Picayune, will discuss his new book, Getting Off at Elysian Fields at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public.

According to Pope, no city in America knows how to mark death with more funerary panache than New Orleans. Collected here are not just simple recitations of schools and workplaces, and marriages. These pieces include great achievements, dubious dabblings, unavoidable foibles, relationships gone sour, and happenstances that turn out to be life-changing.

There are stories about Carnival monarchs, great philanthropists, and several politicians. Because New Orleans embraces eccentric behavior, there are stories of people who colored way outside the lines. For instance, there was the doctor who used his plasma to make his flowers grow, and the philanthropist who took money she had put aside for a fur coat to underwrite the lawsuit that desegregated Tulane University. A letter carrier everyone loved turned out to have been a spy during World War II, and a fledgling lawyer changed his lifelong thoughts about race when he saw blind people going into a Christmas party through separate doors--one for white people and another for African Americans. Then there was the punctilious judge who got down on his hands and knees to edge his lawn--with scissors.
Because New Orleans funerals are distinctive, the author includes accounts of four that he covered, complete with soulful singing and even some dancing.

John Pope has written obituaries throughout his 44-year career in journalism and was a member of the New Orleans Times-Picayune team that won two Pulitzer Prizes, a National Headliner Award, and a George Polk Award for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

This event is co-sponsored by the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, an annual five-day literary festival in the city of New Orleans. The festival is dedicated to the Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright Tennessee Williams. Every year, it features several events related to the long career of Williams, as well as writing workshops, panel discussions, literary readings, stage performances, a book fair, music, writing contests, and other events related to American literature, poetry, drama, opera, film, photography, art, history, culture, and cooking. The signature event is the Stella and Stanley Shouting Contest that closes the festival.

Getting Off at Elysian Fields-John Pope
This collection of obituaries, written by New Orleans Time-Picayune journalist and 2016 Festival Speaker John Pope, illustrates the vibrant lives of New Orleanians' past. Here are stories of Carnival monarchs, philanthropists, politicians, and many other eccentric individuals who did not worry about coloring outside the lines. Above all, these pieces serve as a reminder for what has sustained New Orleans' reputation as a cultural touchstone-the unique blend of those who have lived and died here.

7 p.m., Tuesday, October 20
Run, Baby, Run-Michael Allen Zell
Michael Allen Zell's new novel follows Bobby Delery, a native son of New Orleans who returns to the city of his childhood to teach at Tulane and serve as a consultant to the police department. When Delery receives his first case, investigating a heist job at the Club Big Easy, he finds himself up against obstacles that do not seem connected to the original crime. Kirkus Reviews calls Run, Baby, Run "a sweetly wrought fable of criminal consequences." Zell's first novel, Errata, was named one of the Times-Picayune's "Top 10 Books of 2012."

7 p.m., Thursday, October 29
New Orleans Mardi Gras Moments-Peggy Scott Laborde and Judi Bottoni
This volume of photographs and essays by photographer Judi Bottoni and Mardi Gras expert Peggy Scott Laborde captures moments from contemporary Mardi Gras celebrations. Beginning with Twelfth Night Revelers ushering in the Carnival season to Zulu and Rex bringing the season to a close, Mardi Gras Moments highlights what makes the experience unforgettable. From Endymion's Pontchartrain Beach Float, to the Mardi Gras Indians, the exuberance and thrill of Carnival are on full display here.

7 p.m., Tuesday, November 3
A Free State: A Novel-Tom Piazza
In Tom Piazza's eleventh book, Henry Sims, a fugitive slave, has escaped to Philadelphia but now must find a way to make a living. After befriending a leader of a struggling minstrel troupe, he soon finds himself not only a member, but the reason for its success. Trouble is not far away, however, with a psychopathic slave hunter sent to bring him back to the plantation using any means necessary. Book Page calls this novel "a crisply told tale of race relations" of a pre-Civil War America.

7 p.m., Tuesday, November 10
Tujague's: A Cookbook-Poppy Tooker
This cookbook, from Poppy Tooker, celebrates Tujague's more than a century old tradition of serving Creole food in the heart of the French Quarter. Tooker places the history and lore of New Orleans' second-oldest restaurant alongside famous recipes. Included are ghost tales, modern images from New Orleans' photographers Sam Hanna and Louis Sahuc, and the story of the successful effort to save Tujague's in the latter half of the twentieth century. Among her many awards, Tooker has been named a Hero of the New South by Southern Living.
All events are held in the meeting rooms of the East Bank Regional Library: 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Books are available for sale through the Friends of Jefferson Parish Library. Happy Reading

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Sandbar Jazz

Jazz @ the Sandbar was established in 1990 by Ellis Marsalis, the first Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of the Jazz Studies Program at UNO. The series is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience. Concerts are presented on Wednesday nights during the fall and spring semesters and feature a different respected jazz artist each week. Jazz @ the Sandbar provides a medium for our students to exercise their improvisational skills and gives them the rare opportunity to work with jazz masters.

The Wednesday concerts continue with these special guest artists:
*             October 14 - Trumpeter Gabriel Alegria &
Dancer / Percussionist Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón
*             October 21 - Trumpeter Nicholas Payton
*             October 28 - Jesse McBride & the Next Generation:
A Birthday Tribute to Harold Battiste
*             November 4 - Guitarist / Banjoist Carl LeBlanc
*             November 11 - Saxophonist Jason Marshall

October 14 Jazz @ the Sandbar: Gabriel Alegria & Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón

Gabriel Alegria
Sandbar, 10/14, 7pm
Trumpeter Gabriel Alegria has toured the world with his Afro-Peruvian Sextet and follows the traditions of both contemporary jazz and the Afro-Latin sounds of his native Peru. One of the most influential figures on the current jazz scene in Peru, Gabriel Alegria was born into an artistic family in Lima in 1970. Alegria's grandfather, Ciro, was Peru's most famous novelist, and his father Alonso is Perú's most acclaimed playwright.

Gabriel Alegria combines his experience playing jazz as it developed in the U.S. with a passionate interest and careful study of the black music of coastal Peru. By incorporating and exploring the common African roots found in both styles, he has developed a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz music concept. Alegria earned a doctorate in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California and is currently on the faculty at New York University. Gabriel will be bringing Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón, who is one of the most important masters and exponents of Afro-Peruvian percussion, as well as a three-time national Peruvian zapateo dancing champion.

Alegria and Lobatón will be joining combos led by Brian Seeger and Ricky Sebastian. Visit www.gabrielalegria.com for more info.

  • Ogden After Hours - Marc Stone Acoustic Band
    05:30 PM - 08:00 PM
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Marc Stone will present a special acoustic set featuring New Orleans piano master Joshua Paxton, classically trained virtuoso Jack Joshua on upright bass, and world-renowned percussionist and vibraphonist Mike Dillon. Tapping his 20 years experience in the Blues, Soul, and Zydeco world, he's created a unique sound he calls "Roots in the Present Tense." His recent release Poison & Medicine on Louisiana Red Hot Records features members of this special group as well as a slew of New Orleans legends and contemporary masters. It has been hailed by OffBeat Magazine as "some sort of glorious Elton John/Walter 'Wolfman' Washington mash-up; a watershed moment in Stone's career." Led by Stone's swampy slide guitar, soulful vocals, and well-crafted originals, the CD has already received international airplay. Stone has been touring extensively in Europe and the U.S. while maintaining a strong presence on the New Orleans scene. Stone has been the host of the "Soul Serenade" Blues show on WWOZ-FM since 2001 and has performed with artists as diverse as Eddie Bo, Terrance Simien, Leftover Salmon with Col. Bruce Hampton, Betty Harris, the Honey Island Swamp Band, Benny Turner, John Mooney, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the New Orleans Suspects, Henry Gray, and Marcia Ball.

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Walking to New Orleans
When: Thursdays-Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31
The show dramatizes the work of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew at Carver Theater. The musical show featuring Al "Lil Fats" Jackson and Shamarr Allen dramatizes the musical collaboration of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, who produced a string of R&B hits in the 1950s. At 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Carver Theater.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club

Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

This year, thanks to Helis, NOMA has been able to offer  free admission to all teenagers , every day. The result? Since March 2, almost 2,000 students have signed up for these free passes, and more than 450 of those are local students who have made repeat visits to the museum.  Keep in mind that we are in the month of September-that's roughly 300 teens per month. It's working

New Orleans at Night by Kerri McCaffety
I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day. -Vincent Van Gogh
Book Launch & Signing:
Friday, October 16, 2015
New Orleans Museum of Art
6:00 - 8:00 PM
wine and hors d'oeuvres
RSVP to Monique Tourres, mtourres@noma.org

The Times-Picayune says Kerri McCaffety "knows how to capture the fleeting beauty of a moment," and she does so once again in her sixteenth book, a stunning visual exploration of the Crescent City at night. In this impressive volume of photography inspired by Brassai's 1933 Paris de Nuit. McCaffety highlights iconic scenes such as St. Louis Cathedral, steamboats on the river, and moonrise over the Crescent City bridge. These structures come to life with rich color at night, accented by Christmas lights on St. Charles Avenue, fireworks at City Park, neon lights along Bourbon Street, and megawatt Mardi Gras floats. New Orleans at Night is an inspiring celebratory look at the magic of Crescent City after dark.
This event will also feature a very special surprise: the debut of McCaffety's first work of fiction,
A Killer, a Cocktail, & a Splash of Tango, a Martini Mystery by the author of Obituary Cocktail. A limited number of advance copies will be available.
About the Author
Kerri McCaffety counts among her accolades a Gold Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers, an Author of the Year award from the New Orleans Gulf South Booksellers Association, and seven national publishing awards. Her books include Obituary Cocktail: The Great Saloons of New Orleans; The Majesty of St. Charles Avenue; Etouffée, Mon Amour: The Great Restaurants of New Orleans; Napoleon House; St. Joseph Altars; The Majesty of the French Quarter; New Orleans New Elegance, and The Majesty of St. Francisville.

Whole Foods Market's Louisiana stores will host a series of Sea to Table events in October, highlighting Gulf seafood through demonstrations by local chefs and tours of store seafood departments.

Sea to Table attendees will be able to sample chefs' recipes featuring Gulf seafood, and can enjoy wine pairings. Cost is $25 per person, with all ticket sales benefiting Audubon Nature Institute G.U.L.F. and Louisiana Sea Grant. During the department tours, partners Audubon G.U.L.F., Louisiana Sea Grant and LSU AgCenter will share information on sustainable practices, and Whole Foods Market team members will discuss the company's sustainability efforts and ratings system.

"Sea to Table is a great opportunity to learn more about how seafood is sourced while tasting delicious recipes you can emulate at home," said Kristina Bradford, Louisiana community and media relations coordinator for Whole Foods Market. "These chefs are ready to show some of the ways they love to cook Gulf seafood while supporting these great community partners."

As the only national grocer with full traceability from the water to the store, Whole Foods Market has made moving the seafood industry toward greater sustainability and creating healthy ecosystems, part of its mission. The company does not sell red-rated wild caught seafood, and it sources from areas where fish are most abundant, and where fisheries are managed well. In addition, Whole Foods Market does not carry genetically modified or cloned seafood.

Whole Foods Market orders seafood daily to meet customer demands and accepts special orders with notice. Its fishmongers can help shoppers decide among a variety of responsibly caught or farmed seafood. They can also cut to order and offer cooking tips and recipe ideas.

Serving as Whole Foods Market's Louisiana distributor, Inland Seafood ensures 100 percent traceability from boat to table with no sulfites or additives like tripolyphosphates, which make shrimp retain water and weigh more. Through sustainable practices, the fishermen supplying Whole Foods Market stores are following standards of low impact to the environment and to fishery populations, while providing the freshest, highest quality seafood.

Author and architectural photographer Robert S. Brantley will be joined by THNOC editor Dorothy Ball to discuss the process behind the making of "Henry Howard," an extensively researched project that returns the once forgotten architect to his rightful place. The hardcover book features 330 historical and contemporary images, and will be available for purchase at the event.

The hardcover book includes essays by Spielman, preservationist and journalist Davis and photographic historian John H. Lawrence, and will be available for purchase at the event.

John T. Magill recently retired as senior curator and historian from The Historic New Orleans Collection, where he worked for more than 30 years. He has written and lectured extensively about the urban history and infrastructure of New Orleans, as well as the history of Mardi Gras and historic fashion. He contributed an introduction on Prohibition-era New Orleans to "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), which serves up recipes from the speakeasy era. The satirical, richly illustrated book, which will be available for purchase at the event, brings to life the spirit and spirits of a jazz city in the Jazz Age, offering a cultural snapshot of the Crescent City's resistance to Prohibition.
