Tuesday's Green Plate Special
Red Gravy has done it again. Each week they've impressed us with market-inspired Italian food fit for a king. Chef Roseann makes us proud by perusing the vendors' tents to find just the right ingredients. Last week, G&M's lamb found its way into a slow-cooked ragu. Pete And Clara's crabs were accompanied by bacon in a corn fritter. A light fall salad was topped with satsuma dressing. And the cannolis were cannolis, what more can we say? Come treat yourself this Tuesday!

Recipe of the Week
Who doesn't like wild caught catfish? Pick some up at the market from vendors Pete and Clara's Seafood or Des Allemands Outlaw Catfish this week! You can also grab a bag of fresh pecans from Aloma and Kenneth Savastano. This recipe by Chef Michelle McRaney of Mr. B's Bistro is a delicious twist on the French classic trout meunière using our local ingredients.

Catfish Pecan
Who doesn't like wild caught catfish?  Pick some up at the market from vendors Pete and Clara's Seafood or Des Allemande Outlaw Catfish this week!  This recipe by Chef Michelle McRaney of Mr. B's Bistro is a delicious twist on the French classic trout meunière using local ingredients such as pecans and wild caught catfish.
IngredientsCreole Seasoning
  • 1-1/2 cups paprika
  • 3/4 cup ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup dried basil
  • 1/3 cup garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup dried oregano
  • 1/3 cup dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup onion powder
Catfish
  • 3 tablespoons Creole seasonings
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 cups pecan halves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 catfish fillets (5 to 7 ounces each)
  • 1/4 cup butter, divided
Directions
To prepare Creole Seasoning: Combine all seasoning ingredients and mix well. Store in a tightly covered container.

To prepare catfish: Combine Creole seasoning, flour, and pecans in the bowl of a food processor; process until finely ground. Transfer flour mixture to a large bowl. Whisk egg in a large mixing bowl, then add milk and mix. Season both sides of the fish fillets with Creole seasoning. One at a time, dip the fillets in the egg wash then dredge in pecan flour.

Place a large sauté pan over high heat; add 2 tablespoons of the butter and heat for about 2 minutes or until butter is completely melted and starts to bubble. Place three of the catfish fillets in sauté pan, skin side up, and cook for 30 seconds. Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking for another 1-1/2 to 2 minutes or until the fillets are evenly brown and crisp. Turn the fish over and cook on the second side for 2 to 2-1/2 minutes or until the fish is firm to the touch and evenly browned. Remove fillets from pan and place on a baking rack. Wipe the pan clean with a paper towel, then add another 2 tablespoons of butter and cook the remaining three pieces of fish.

Day 8 (Wednesday, Oct. 21)
New Orleans actor David Jensen stars in director Allen Frederic's Hurricane Katrina drama 'The King of New Orleans.' (K.O.N.O. Productions)
Today's best bet: "The King of New Orleans" (5 stars | dir. Allen Frederic, with Coodie & Chickie | 1 hour 22 minutes | Unrated, warrants PG-13.) Buoyed by a pitch-perfect performance from local actor David Jensen and a distinct insider's sensibility, "The King of New Orleans" -- screening in competition at this year's festival -- is not only among the best truly independent dramas to come out of New Orleans in recent memory, but it also stands to resonate with locals like few other films can. Jansen stars as Larry Shirt, a congenial United cabdriver who finds himself navigating more than the city's notorious potholes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But this isn't some manipulative trauma drama. As much a deftly written Big Easy essay as it is an entertainment, you can call it a love letter if you must. Just realize that it's as much a love letter to the city's residents as it is to the city itself. That's because Frederic's film doesn't so seem interested so much in trying to explain Katrina to the world as much as it seems intent on explaining it to us, a populace still struggling to wrap its head around the true magnitude of it all. Expect lovely nighttime shots of the city and a wealth of only-in-New-Orleans visual references (K&B, Bud's Broiler, Felix's, Abita Beer). Also expect mentions of memorable events that happened in real life before and after the storm. But also expect that authentic blend of optimism and brutal honesty -- with a little chicory, perhaps -- that resides behind every fleur-de-lis-shaped heart in the 504. "The King of New Orleans" is Frederic's first film, but it's also essential viewing, especially for those who lived and cried through the storm -- and who still wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. To put it in three little words: Yeah, you right. Screening details: 9 p.m. Prytania (5339 Prytania St.); also screens at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Theaters at Canal Place (333 Canal St.)
Plan B Picks
  • "The Phantasmagorical Clarence John Laughlin" (3 stars | noon | Prytania, 5339 Prytania St.) The curmudgeonly New Orleans poet, artist and book collector -- and the man considered the father of American surrealist photography -- is profiled in a straightforwardly shot but informative, and enjoyable, documentary. (Also screens at noon on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Prytania.)
  • "Anomalisa" (9 p.m. | The Theatres at Canal Place, 333 Canal St.) The latest mind-bending journey from the wonderfully peculiar brain of Charlie Kaufman ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Being John Malkovich") is a stop-motion animated tale for grown-ups, about a man crippled by the mundanity of life. It came out of nowhere this fall to become a surprise addition to the fall release calendar -- and the early reviews suggest it's a bona fide Oscar contender, as well.
  • "Reversing the Mississippi" (2 stars | 7 p.m. | Chalmette Movies, 8700 West Judge Perez Drive) New Orleans' Our School at Blair Grocery meets Ted Talks, in a documentary about the friendship between two men from two very different worlds who are brought together by their similar drive and complementing visions. (Also screening at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at the Prytania Theatre.)
Day 8 full schedule:
Prytania Theatre (5339 Prytania St.)
  • Noon: "The Phantasmagorical Clarence John Laughlin" (documentary feature)
  • 2:15 p.m.: "Touch the Light" and "Boxeadora" (documentary feature)
  • 4:30 p.m.: "The Third Man" (narrative feature)
  • 6:30 p.m.: Louisiana shorts program No. 3
  • 9 p.m.: "The King of New Orleans" (narrative feature)
The Theatres at Canal Place (333 Canal St.)
  • 5:30 p.m.: Documentary shorts program: "The Birds"
  • 5:30 p.m.: Documentary shorts program: "Strangers on a Train"
  • 7:30 p.m.: Music videos and dance shorts program: "Frenzy"
  • 7:30 p.m.: "Hotel Nueva Isla" (documentary feature)
  • 9 p.m.: "Krishna" (narrative feature)
  • 9 p.m.: "Anomalisa" (narrative feature)
Chalmette Movies (8700 West Judge Perez Drive)
  • 7 p.m.: "Reversing the Mississippi" (documentary feature)
  • 9 p.m.: "Goodnight Mommy" (narrative feature)

  • 8:30 p.m.: "Jaco" (documentary feature)
Day 9 (Thursday, Oct. 22)
Saoirse Ronan stars in director John Crowley's period romance 'Brooklyn.' (Fox Searchlight)
Today's best bet: "Brooklyn" (dir. John Crawford | 1 hour 51 minutes | Rated PG-13, for a scene of sexuality and brief strong language) The 2015 festival closes with one of its higher-profile films, in director John Crowley's historical drama "Brooklyn." Starring Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan ("Atonement"), it tells the story of a young Irish immigrant as she navigates Brooklyn -- and a budding romance -- in the 1950s. Following screenings earlier this year at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, it earned universal praise for Ronan and co-star Emory Cohen, catapulting Ronan -- and Crowley's film as a whole -- into the Oscar conversation. As one of the more in-demand screenings at this year's festival, tickets might be hard to come by, but if you miss it you can watch for it in theaters later in award season. Screening details: 8:30 p.m., Prytania Theatre, 5339 Prytania St.
Plan B Picks
  • "New Orleans, Here & Now" (6:15 p.m. | Prytania Theatre, 5339 Prytania St.) Patricia Clarkson and Scott Bakula help executive-produce an anthology of six documentary shorts from six different filmmakers -- including from such past NOFF winners as Zack Godshall and Lily Keber -- about life in New Orleans a decade after Hurricane Katrina.
  • "Best of Enemies" (3 stars | 7 p.m. | Chalmette Movies, 8700 West Judge Perez Drive) We interrupt the current presidential free-for-all for this reminder that 2015 by no means has exclusive rights to political polarization. Exhibit A: "Best of Enemies," Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon's entertaining and informative remembrance of the enduring, heart-felt feud between ultra-conservative pundit William F. Buckley and his ultra-liberal counterpart, Gore Vidal. (Also screens at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, and at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, both at the Chalmette Movies.)
  • "Dog Man" (4:30 p.m. | Prytania Theatre, 5339 Prytania St.) Legendary Baton Rouge dog trainer Dick Russell, whose methods would earn him worldwide notoriety, is profiled in a film that arrives as a must-see for dog people and people people alike. (Also screens at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, also at the Prytania.)
Day 9 full schedule:
Prytania Theatre (5339 Prytania St.)
  • Noon: "Harry and Snowman" (documentary feature)
  • 2:15 p.m.: "Thank You for Playing" (documentary feature)
  • 4:30 p.m.: "Dog Man" (documentary feature)
  • 6:15 p.m.: "New Orleans, Here & Now" (documentary feature)
  • 8:30 p.m.: "Brooklyn" (narrative feature)
The Theatres at Canal Place (333 Canal St.)
  • 5:30 p.m.: "Portrait of a Lone Farmer" (documentary feature)
  • 5:30 p.m.: "Treasure" (documentary feature)
  • 7 p.m.: "Scrum" (documentary feature)
  • 7:30 p.m.: "Deal with It" and "Mirror Image" (documentary feature)
  • 8:45 p.m.: "It Had to Be You" (narrative feature)
  • 9 p.m.: "Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi" (documentary feature)
Chalmette Movies (8700 West Judge Perez Drive)
  • 7 p.m.: "Best of Enemies," (documentary feature)
  • 9 p.m.: "Steve Jobs: Man in the Machine" (documentary feature)

Access to quality early childhood education and childcare is the single biggest indicator of future educational success and worker retention. Louisiana passed legislation to restructure and improve early childhood options, but changes have been largely unfunded. How could the next governor and a newly elected Board of Elementary and Secondary Education alter the early childhood arena? If funds do come, what should be prioritized? How can improving early childhood programs improve the state's educational outcomes, workforce availability and overall economic outlook?
Panelists are:
  • Teresa Falgoust, KIDS COUNT Coordinator, Agenda for Children
  • Kristi Givens, Childcare Provider with Kids of Excellence
  • Stewart T. Gordon, M.D., Louisiana Healthcare Connections
  • Derek Little, La. Dept. of Education, Deputy Director, Early Childhood

This Wednesday

Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 to 8pm: The Wines of Ismael Gozalo, A Visionary Spanish Winemaker
As the fifth generation of farmers from Nieva, Ismael's family has tended to their pre-phylloxera Verdejo vines since 1748, making them some of the oldest vines in the world.  The land they farm is incredibly special with 4 key soil types derived from a prehistoric mountain range, giving varying yet perfect terroir for grapes in this continental climate.  He is best known for his Ossian wines that score between 92-96 from Vinous for every year they were reviewed.  His success there led to another project where he could express the purest expressions of the varietals, MicroBio. Organic farming, biosinergia philosophy (predates Steiner's biodynamics by 2000 years), the use of amphora and neutral vessels, making his wines unique, expressive and truly exciting!  The wines will be presented by owner Brad Jensen and Sommelier Bryan Hinschberger of Bon Vivant Imports, a dynamic force in the world of natural wines.  These are very small productions wines so our seating is limited to 20 people.  A selection of Spanish cheeses and meats will accompany the wines.  $25, you can make reservations here: Ismael Gozalo

Wednesday Nite Flites October 21, 6-8pm: 4 Blind Pinots!  - Sommelier Kimi Kiviranna and Erin Rhoads pour special wine flights every Wednesday evening.  Served to you tableside, this week we'll focus on Pinot Noir from 4 different regions and if you want we'll pour theme blind and see if you can guess what's from where! The flight of 4 wines is $15 and reservations are not required but if you want to make sure you get a spot your can do so here: Wednesday Nite Flite

Friday October 23, 6-8pm Friday Free for All:  George Brown from Vino Wholesale will join us tonight with a great selection of 4 wines from Southern France.  This tasting is free and reservations are not required!

Great Books Discussion Group: Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
A/V Conference Room, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie
A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero is one Ignatius J. Reilly, "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures."

2015 Coffee and Conversation Event #3:

Michael Allen Zell Talks about His New Book: Run, Baby, Run

METAIRIE, LA - Michael Allen Zell, a local author, will discuss his new book, Run, Baby, Run at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie. The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public.

The discussion and book signing is part of the 2015 Coffee and Conversation Series offered by the library and the Tennessee Williams/ New Orleans Literary Festival.

When Bobby Delery's parents divorced, his father took the nine-year-old north with him. Now he's back in the Big Easy to teach at Tulane and work as a consultant to the police department. His first case is an urgent one because the cops need to find the pair of miscreants who cleaned out the safe of Club Big Easy before Dominic Cavallari, the club's manager, takes matters into his own hands. Since Mr. C is under considerable pressure from club owner Alex Yevchev to recover his $970,000, Bobby needs to work fast. But he faces obstacles that seem to have nothing to do with the theft.

Capt. Patrick Connell demands that Delery ignore a blood trail he's found near the corpse of Clint Olson, the Big Easy bartender who was clearly in on the job. A person of interest he encounters drives away before Delery can stop him. Delery's own car attracts the legal attention of a predatory towing company. Every lead he finds is complicated by the fact that everyone in New Orleans is working some angle or stuck in some private fantasy. And Melba Barnes, the retired accountant who's ended up with the boodle, has an utterly unexpected plan to dispose of it.

Michael Allen Zell is a New Orleans based writer whose work has been published in Cerise Press, Disonare, Entrepot, Exquisite Corpse, NOLA Defender, Room 220, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and Sleepingfish. His first play, What Do You Say To A Shadow?, named one of the "Top 10 Plays of the Year" in 2013 by the Times Picayune, was staged at New Orleans' Shadowbox Theatre, which also hosted his first full length play, Thin Walls, in September 2014. His first novel Errata was published by Lavender Ink and named one of the Times-Picayune's "Top 10 Books of 2012." He has worked as a bookseller in New Orleans since 2003.

The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival is an annual five-day literary festival held each spring in New Orleans. The festival is dedicated to the Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright Tennessee Williams. Every year, it features several events related to the long career of Williams, as well as writing workshops, panel discussions, literary readings, stage performances, a book fair, music, writing contests, and other events related to American literature, poetry, drama, opera, film, photography, art, history, culture, and cooking. The signature event is the Stella and Stanley Shouting Contest that closes the festival.

New Orleans Mardi Gras Moments-Peggy Scott Laborde and Judi Bottoni
This volume of photographs and essays by photographer Judi Bottoni and Mardi Gras expert Peggy Scott Laborde captures moments from contemporary Mardi Gras celebrations. Beginning with Twelfth Night Revelers ushering in the Carnival season to Zulu and Rex bringing the season to a close, Mardi Gras Moments highlights what makes the experience unforgettable. From Endymion's Pontchartrain Beach Float, to the Mardi Gras Indians, the exuberance and thrill of Carnival are on full display here.

7 p.m., Tuesday, November 3
A Free State: A Novel-Tom Piazza
In Tom Piazza's eleventh book, Henry Sims, a fugitive slave, has escaped to Philadelphia but now must find a way to make a living. After befriending a leader of a struggling minstrel troupe, he soon finds himself not only a member, but the reason for its success. Trouble is not far away, however, with a psychopathic slave hunter sent to bring him back to the plantation using any means necessary. Book Page calls this novel "a crisply told tale of race relations" of a pre-Civil War America.

7 p.m., Tuesday, November 10
Tujague's: A Cookbook-Poppy Tooker
This cookbook, from Poppy Tooker, celebrates Tujague's more than a century old tradition of serving Creole food in the heart of the French Quarter. Tooker places the history and lore of New Orleans' second-oldest restaurant alongside famous recipes. Included are ghost tales, modern images from New Orleans' photographers Sam Hanna and Louis Sahuc, and the story of the successful effort to save Tujague's in the latter half of the twentieth century. Among her many awards, Tooker has been named a Hero of the New South by Southern Living.
All events are held in the meeting rooms of the East Bank Regional Library: 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Books are available for sale through the Friends of Jefferson Parish Library. Happy Reading

Greek-Style Braised Green Beans

Want an easy side dish (or main dish if you really love green beans) that is both healthy AND yummy? Make these green beans using snap beans and tomatoes from your Box! Add some chopped amara greens in there for an extra nutritional kick. Summer squash could go in there, too, if you really want to amp up this dish! Check out the recipe!
Greek-Style Braised Green Beans
Serves 4
1 pound fresh or frozen green beans
1 large onion, finely chopped
4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
2 large Roma tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup dry white wine
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve
If the green beans are frozen, thaw at room temperature for about half an hour while prepping the rest of the ingredients. If fresh, wash them and snap off the ends, and snap each bean in half.
Heat the olive oil in a Dutch oven or heavy lidded pot over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic gently over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until they are soft. Add the red pepper and tomatoes and sauté for another 5 minutes, until the tomato begins to break down.

Stir in the green beans, toss them to coat with the onion and oil. Pour in the wine and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover and cook for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the beans are tender to your liking.
Stir in the cinnamon, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with lemon wedges on the side.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Generate INK, founded by Kate Bailey, Bridget Erin, and Rudy San Miguel, a New Orleans nonprofit created by local playwrights for the sole purpose of producing one play from each writer over the course of one year, will present "Sonata For Four Hands" by Bridget Erin.
The production will be presented at the Marsalis Jazz Studio at NOCCA, 2800 Chartres 70117, Oct. 21-23, Oct. 27-30, and Nov. 4-7 at 7:30 each night. Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase at Eventbrite and at the door 30 minutes before the performance.
Founded in September 2014, Generate INK is based off of New York's successful playwriting group 13p, and has set its sights on producing three plays in New Orleans in 2015.
Generate INK kicked off the year with the world premiere of "Human Resources," by Rudy San Miguel, followed closely by the successful run of "STRAYS," by Kate Bailey.
"Sonata For Four Hands'' examines how the love of music can incite surprising and dividing passions for two young pianists, Jonah and Eliza. When they decide to take on a difficult four-hand sonata by the 19th century Russian Jewish composer Anton Rubinstein, the piece provokes such strong emotions that their relationship may never be the same.
The play is directed by Harold Gervais, and stars Kaitlyn McQuin, Rebecca Meyers and Mike Spara, with design by Dan Zimmer and Mike Harkins.
The show is funded in part by the Goddard Alumni Arts Project Award, which supports new work by graduates of the Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts program at Goddard College.

Show
There has never been a day in the last 40 years that "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has not been playing on a big screen somewhere in the world. It is the longest continuous theatre release in history!
Released on August 15, 1975, it was originally panned by movie critics but then developed an extraordinary cult following when it began to be released as a " midnight movie". Throngs of theme-costumed followers would show up at theatres all over the world to sing, shout lines, and take on the roles of their characters.
It has remained the favorite midnight movie of all time.
Come join us on Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 pm to celebrate this cult classic's 40th birthday. Yes, costumes are highly encouraged! (And two lucky best-costume winners will go home $50 richer!)

The  Mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs  State Park in Florida have been a popular visitor attraction since the City of Mermaids opened in 1947. Women performed synchronized underwater swimming shows and the park became one of Florida's early roadside attractions, drawing visitors from around the world.

A school of  Mermaids visits Audubon Aquarium of the Americas  for a two-week stint (Oct. 22-25), and they'll swim in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit throughout Aquarium hours and Mermaids will be available for photos outside the tank as well.

In recent years, the Mermaids have performed their underwater shows at aquariums around the country. At Audubon, they'll be swimming continuously, but there's no show. They'll also swim in the Great Maya tunnel.

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Walking to New Orleans
When: Thursdays-Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31
The show dramatizes the work of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew at Carver Theater. The musical show featuring Al "Lil Fats" Jackson and Shamarr Allen dramatizes the musical collaboration of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, who produced a string of R&B hits in the 1950s. At 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Carver Theater.

Whole Green

Whole Foods Market's Louisiana stores will host a series of Sea to Table events in October, highlighting Gulf seafood through demonstrations by local chefs and tours of store seafood departments.

Sea to Table attendees will be able to sample chefs' recipes featuring Gulf seafood, and can enjoy wine pairings. Cost is $25 per person, with all ticket sales benefiting Audubon Nature Institute G.U.L.F. and Louisiana Sea Grant. During the department tours, partners Audubon G.U.L.F., Louisiana Sea Grant and LSU AgCenter will share information on sustainable practices, and Whole Foods Market team members will discuss the company's sustainability efforts and ratings system.

"Sea to Table is a great opportunity to learn more about how seafood is sourced while tasting delicious recipes you can emulate at home," said Kristina Bradford, Louisiana community and media relations coordinator for Whole Foods Market. "These chefs are ready to show some of the ways they love to cook Gulf seafood while supporting these great community partners."

As the only national grocer with full traceability from the water to the store, Whole Foods Market has made moving the seafood industry toward greater sustainability and creating healthy ecosystems, part of its mission. The company does not sell red-rated wild caught seafood, and it sources from areas where fish are most abundant, and where fisheries are managed well. In addition, Whole Foods Market does not carry genetically modified or cloned seafood.

Whole Foods Market orders seafood daily to meet customer demands and accepts special orders with notice. Its fishmongers can help shoppers decide among a variety of responsibly caught or farmed seafood. They can also cut to order and offer cooking tips and recipe ideas.

Serving as Whole Foods Market's Louisiana distributor, Inland Seafood ensures 100 percent traceability from boat to table with no sulfites or additives like tripolyphosphates, which make shrimp retain water and weigh more. Through sustainable practices, the fishermen supplying Whole Foods Market stores are following standards of low impact to the environment and to fishery populations, while providing the freshest, highest quality seafood.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Tickets Available October  29th Only

Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

October 25th-Don Vappie & the Creole Jazz Serenaders

Born in New Orleans, Don Vappie is descended from a long line of New Orleans musicians that goes back to the nineteenth century. Once a featured performer in the Preservation Hall Band, Vappie now leads and tours with 'The Creole Jazz Serenaders' (CJS). After Hurricane Katrina, he co-founded with his wife Millie "Bring it on Home", an organized effort to help displaced New Orleans musicians find work and return to their hometown. His family's musical heritage was recently explored in "American Creole: New Orleans Reunion", a PBS documentary. As a result, he was honored with a LA Creole Society Award for his promotion of the Creole culture of New Orleans in music and film. Recent recordings with the CJS include "Banjo A La Creole" and "Swing Out". Offbeat Magazine chose his debut CD, 'Creole Blues', as one of Louisiana's 100 Essential CDs of the 20th century. Vappie, known for his original banjo style, also plays mandolin, guitar, string bass and is a vocalist as well. He has also transcribed many early jazz recordings of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and others. He was also chosen by the Historic New Orleans Collection to serve as Musical Director for the premier of their newly discovered Jelly Roll Morton compositions. Over the past ten years, Don has appeared as a regular guest with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz At Lincoln Center.

Since March 2, almost 2,000 students have signed up for these free passes, and more than 450 of those are local students who have made repeat visits to the museum.  Keep in mind that we are in the month of September-that's roughly 300 teens per month. The literary celebration offers opportunities for book lovers of all ages to interact with writers, poets and storytellers and enjoy a variety of book-related activities, exhibitions and demonstrations. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at multiple venues in downtown Baton Rouge.

Two of THNOC's most recent publications will be represented at the festival: "The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered City" and "Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect."  In addition, retired THNOC senior curator and historian John T. Magill will discuss "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), for which he contributed an introduction. More information about the talks and the book signings is below.

"Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect," a richly illustrated title co-published by The Historic New Orleans Collection and Princeton Architectural Press, shines light on one of the most prolific yet historically elusive southern architects of the 19th century. Author and architectural photographer Robert S. Brantley will be joined by THNOC editor Dorothy Ball to discuss the process behind the making of "Henry Howard," an extensively researched project that returns the once forgotten architect to his rightful place. The hardcover book features 330 historical and contemporary images, and will be available for purchase at the event.

Discussion of "The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered City" (THNOC 2015), with author and photographer David G. Spielman and contributing essayists Jack Davis and John H. Lawrence

Photographer and author David G. Spielman will be joined by contributing essayists Jack Davis and John H. Lawrence in this discussion about "The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered City." Released in July, "The Katrina Decade" presents more than 125 haunting black-and-white images capturing the melancholy beauty of recovery, neglect and endurance in the 10 years since Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee breaches battered New Orleans. The hardcover book includes essays by Spielman, preservationist and journalist Davis and photographic historian John H. Lawrence, and will be available for purchase at the event.

Discussion of "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), with retired THNOC senior curator and historian John T. Magill
Talk: 2-2:30 p.m., Senate Committee Room F, the Louisiana State Capitol, N. 3rd Street and Capitol Dr.
Book signing: 2:45-3:30 p.m., Barnes and Noble book tent on Spanish Town Road

John T. Magill recently retired as senior curator and historian from The Historic New Orleans Collection, where he worked for more than 30 years. He has written and lectured extensively about the urban history and infrastructure of New Orleans, as well as the history of Mardi Gras and historic fashion. He contributed an introduction on Prohibition-era New Orleans to "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), which serves up recipes from the speakeasy era. The satirical, richly illustrated book, which will be available for purchase at the event, brings to life the spirit and spirits of a jazz city in the Jazz Age, offering a cultural snapshot of the Crescent City's resistance to Prohibition.

December 16,2015

The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
