Tulane gets $1.6 million to develop better flu vaccine
Elizabeth Norton (Photo by Paula Burch-Celentano)
As flu season officially begins this month, researchers at Tulane University School of Medicine are working on developing more effective flu vaccinations thanks to a $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Tulane immunologist Elizabeth Norton and her team are testing the efficacy of two adjuvants - compounds that stimulate the immune system - as part of the effort to create a better flu vaccine. LTA and LTA1 are new generation proteins developed from a parent molecule that proved to be a highly effective adjuvant in earlier trials but produced unacceptable side effects in a small number of people.
Adjuvants LTA and LTA1 have several potential benefits. They can boost a vaccine's effectiveness, helping to protect high-risk populations (e.g., elderly, immunocompromised) or be used in smaller doses to stretch a limited vaccine supply, potentially critical in a pandemic flu setting. These particular adjuvants cause no or limited memory response in the immune system, so they could be used for a number of different vaccinations.
"It's really exciting that we have the opportunities and the tools here at Tulane to be investigating something that could help so many people," says Norton.
The team will primarily use mice to test flu vaccines by both skin injections and nasal sprays. The studies will examine immunologic responses, the level of virus protection offered and how the vaccine is working mechanistically.

New Orleans Lager and Ale (NOLA) Brewing to Release Wandering Eye-PA
First Beer Release of NOLA Brewing's Small Batch "Lagniappe Series"

New Orleans, LA : Lagniappe means "a little extra" but in NOLA Brewing's case, it means A LOT. On October 27th, 2015, NOLA Brewing will release Wandering Eye-PA, the first official beer of their new Lagniappe Series. The Lagniappe series is a wide-ranging, freewheeling series of beers that are available in the NOLA Brewing Tap Room, special events and now at select bars in New Orleans.
"We are always coming up with great new beers that were only available in our Tap Room, but we knew we wanted to give craft beer fans a taste of our special small batches outside of our own building," says Kirk Coco, CEO of NOLA Brewing. "The Lagniappe Series allows us to sell those really interesting beers outside the Tap Room and in New Orleans bars and restaurants. "
The Lagniappe Series' first small batch is Wandering Eye-PA, a Session IPA brewed with five highly sought after hops: Galaxy, Citra, Belma, Zythos and Centennial. This Session IPA has the most hops NOLA Brewing has ever put into a beer and will appeal to the growing number of New Orleans hop-heads. This all-things-hoppy beer has a 4.5% ABV.
Wandering Eye-PA is a small batch beer that will launch in the NOLA Brewing Tap Room on October 27 and will be available to bars and restaurants until sold out. The Session IPA will be available in draught form in New Orleans, only.
Also available will be NOLA Brewing's annual beers such as the NOLA Blonde, Hopitoulas, 7th Street Wheat, Rebirth Pale Ale, NOLA Brown, Irish Channel Stout and Mecha and their current seasonal beer, Darkest Before Dawn (Munich Dunkel).

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION
NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at 9 a.m., the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works will hold its fifth abandoned vehicle auction of 2015. The auction will be located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 22 vehicle auctions, selling 2,495 abandoned cars and contributing over $1,694,485 to the City's General Fund.

As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which results in a notarized title at time of payment. This feature has been extremely well received by the public as the buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven that it saves the citizens time and streamlines their purchase.

The current auction will have 112 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods, and can become junked harborages for rats and mosquitoes. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works has towed 14,102 vehicles through Oct. 10, 2015.

Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.

All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, LA, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on Thursday as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

Quick Facts
  • All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com.
  • Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
  • The current auction will be advertised on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015.
  • Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.

Purchasing a vehicle
  • Cash or cashier's check required
  • Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the buyer's $50 deposit is forfeited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.
  • A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which gives the buyer a notarized title to that vehicle
  • City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.
  • For more information, visit Brown's Auction Company's Web site at www.brownsauction.com

Sold Out!! Chateauneuf du Pape's Anne Charlotte Melia & the Wines of Chateau La Font du Loup, October 27th, 6:30pm  Swirl is excited to host winemaker/proprietor Anne Charlotte Melia from France's famous region of Chateuneuf du Pape.  We visited Charlotte in June and were very impressed by the elegance of her wines that she says is a product of their unique terroir. The vineyards at the top of a hill, facing north and the sandy soil (similar to close by and legendary Château Rayas) give her wines a freshness and delicacy not often found in the region. And as for her part in it Charlotte ensures that the wines are never over-extracted, are vinified at cool temperatures and that no new oak is used. In this seated event we'll taste 4 of her wines (maybe 5 if we can get some of her delicious rosé) and learn what it is about the location of Chateau La Font du Loup that makes these wines so special.  $35 Reservations required and you can do so here: Chateau de la Font du Loup

Wednesday Nite Flites October 28, 6-8pm: Bordeaux 101 - Sommelier Kimi Kiviranna and Erin Rhoads pour special wine flights every Wednesday evening. Sold Out!! Commander's Palace Celebrates the Wines of Château de la Font du Loup, Wednesday, October 28th, 6:30 pm

Here is the classic--and true--story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress, a Southern Civil War heroine to rival Scarlett O'Hara. Vyry bears witness to the South's prewar opulence and its brutality, to its wartime ruin and the subsequent promise of Reconstruction. It is a story that Margaret Walker heard as a child from her grandmother, the real Vyry's daughter. The author spent thirty years researching the novel so that the world might know the intelligent, strong, and brave black woman called Vyry. The phenomenal acclaim this best-selling book has achieved from readers black and white, young and old, attests to her success.

Christopher M. Hannan: Alluvial Cities
Tuesday, October 27th
6:30-7:30PM

The poems in Alluvial Cities are drawn from this layered landscape's geology and history, its people and language, and the kindred ties between earth and water, flesh and blood.

Deucalionids
The waters broke from the void before first light,
a divinity ripping through the trembling flesh
of marshes and the levees old clay thighs,
covering every mile of St. Bernard Parish.
Houses with their cement slabs have floated
light as the rinds of watermelons you ate as a boy
and chucked into Lake Catherine, swelled to overflowing
by the god that surged into the Rigolets estuary
and left an afterbirth of sweet crude leaked
from foundered tanks. Cars hang like carrion
birds on the highest branches and torn roofs. Leached
of mud and flood waters, the houses we pass cry out
broken window panes, duct-taped fridges, and a stillness
that leaves us on the dead grass of this
woman's home, like so many thrown bones.

Christopher M. Hannan discusses and signs his book, Alluvial Cities.

This book is available in paperback ($8.95).

With its fresh new take on the beloved tale of a young woman who is transformed from a chambermaid into a princess, this hilarious and romantic Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA combines the story's classic elements - glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball along with some surprising twists. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, this Cinderella is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn't let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, but forces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too.
CINDERELLA has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and original book by Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Josh Rhodes. Music adaptation, supervision and arrangements are by David Chase and orchestrations are by Danny Troob.
One of Rodgers + Hammerstein's most popular titles, CINDERELLA was written for television -- debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. In 2013, the show made its long-overdue Broadway debut. Along with CINDERELLA, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's legendary musicals include OKLAHOMA!, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music.
Mr. Beane's book for CINDERELLA blends masterfully with the musical's cherished score with songs including "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible/It's Possible," "Ten Minutes Ago" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?"
The creative team includes scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos, costume design by six-time Tony Award-winner William Ivey Long, lighting design by Tony Award-winner Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Award nominee Nevin Steinberg.
The CINDERELLA tour is produced by Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman, Stephen Kocis, Edward Walson, Venetian Glass Productions, The Araca Group, Caiola Productions, Roy Furman, Peter May, Sanford Robertson, Eric Schmidt, James Spry and Blanket Fort Productions.

Russian pianist Nikita Mndoyants was a finalist in the 2013 Cliburn Competition, 36 years after his father also won a Cliburn prize. He did so with performances that the Dallas Morning News tagged as "flawlessly paced, beautifully detailed, and emotionally powerful." Also an active composer, Mr. Mndoyants received first prize at the Myaskovsky International Competition of Composers in 2014, and his works have been performed by Daniel Hope, Nicolas Stavy, the Szymanowski and Zemlinsky Quartets, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, and others. This season, Mr. Mndoyants was commissioned by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music to write a piano quintet, which will have its world premiere in November 2015, with the Zemlinsky Quartet, shortly after his performance at the University of New Orleans. Mndoyants New Orleans debut will feature sonatas by Haydn, Schumann, and Prokofiev, and include Beethoven's beloved "Appassionata."

Generate INK, founded by Kate Bailey, Bridget Erin, and Rudy San Miguel, a New Orleans nonprofit created by local playwrights for the sole purpose of producing one play from each writer over the course of one year, will present "Sonata For Four Hands" by Bridget Erin.
The production will be presented at the Marsalis Jazz Studio at NOCCA, 2800 Chartres 70117,  Oct. 27-30, and Nov. 4-7 at 7:30 each night. Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase at Eventbrite and at the door 30 minutes before the performance.
Founded in September 2014, Generate INK is based off of New York's successful playwriting group 13p, and has set its sights on producing three plays in New Orleans in 2015.
Generate INK kicked off the year with the world premiere of "Human Resources," by Rudy San Miguel, followed closely by the successful run of "STRAYS," by Kate Bailey.
"Sonata For Four Hands'' examines how the love of music can incite surprising and dividing passions for two young pianists, Jonah and Eliza. When they decide to take on a difficult four-hand sonata by the 19th century Russian Jewish composer Anton Rubinstein, the piece provokes such strong emotions that their relationship may never be the same.
The play is directed by Harold Gervais, and stars Kaitlyn McQuin, Rebecca Meyers and Mike Spara, with design by Dan Zimmer and Mike Harkins.
The show is funded in part by the Goddard Alumni Arts Project Award, which supports new work by graduates of the Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts program at Goddard College.

METAIRIE, LA - Jessica Rareshide, an entrepreneur who consults with businesses and individuals in areas of personnel management, will give a free presentation titled "The Pay Gap Is Green" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

During this presentation, Rareshide will discuss ways in which women can negotiate better salaries, ways in which women sabotage themselves in the workplace, and how to conduct compensation research, and ways to enlist men to become partners in pay equality.

Rareshide also will provide resources and handouts for attendees.

Tooker places the history and lore of New Orleans' second-oldest restaurant alongside famous recipes. Included are ghost tales, modern images from New Orleans' photographers Sam Hanna and Louis Sahuc, and the story of the successful effort to save Tujague's in the latter half of the twentieth century. Among her many awards, Tooker has been named a Hero of the New South by Southern Living.
All events are held in the meeting rooms of the East Bank Regional Library: 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Books are available for sale through the Friends of Jefferson Parish Library. Happy Reading

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Lawyers in Libraries Program Allows Patrons

To Meet Lawyers and Receive Free Legal Information

METAIRIE, LA - Lawyers in Libraries, a program sponsored by the Louisiana State Bar Association that links lawyers with patrons who need legal advice, will occur in four Jefferson Parish Libraries during the last week of October.

During each presentation, volunteer lawyers will provide information about how to access civil legal resources and will be available for questions and answers and brief consultations with attendees.

Each presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

The goal of the day is twofold: to provide local citizens with access to legal advice and information, and to demonstrate how legal access is critical to a community's well-being; for example, an entire community suffers when neighbors and friends go through foreclosure, are not safe in their homes, or cannot afford heat or food.

Patrons who seek out legal advice in this year's Lawyers in Libraries program will have an opportunity to meet with a lawyer based in their community and receive information about free resources, low-cost legal assistance, and legal referrals. In addition, some attendees will have the opportunity for a brief private consultation with an attorney about personal legal matters.

THIRSTING FOR SOMETHING "ODD" THIS OCTOBER?
Kingfish to serve Halloween inspired menu
New Orleans, Louisiana- Executive Chef Nathan Richard of Kingfish Restaurant takes blood and gore to new levels of culinary intrigue when he presents the 3rd dinner in the 5-part Kitchen & Cocktails Dinner Series on Wednesday, October 28. The five-course dinner will also feature the maniacal craft cocktails of Head Bartender Chris McMillan. "Much of the allure of Louisiana food is its cultural diversity, its gumbo pot of cuisines," states Chef Richard. "Head to tail cooking is found in just about every cuisine in the world, wasting no part of the animal. The 'Odd Bites' menu features offal, which may not be for everyone, but it sure is fun to play with food and offers an alluring culinary adventure for our guests."
Chef Richard's ghoulish dinner will feature five courses of "odd bites," or an unusual take on some unique ingredients that any foodie will appreciate. Using "parts" from every part of the animal, the evening begins with an amuse course of fried chicken foot with blackened voodoo sweet and sour sauce. The first course of smoked duck heart sausage with bone marrow toasted bread is followed by a second course of foie gras stuffed trotter with frisee and turnip marmalade. A lamb brain ravioli with mushroom ragout is served third, and then a fourth course of calf liver and truffle eggs with Creole cream cheese grits and fried onion rings. The evening ends with a chocolate "blood" ice cream with beene seed brittle and Creole shrub.
"New Orleans is America's most haunted city, and Kingfish is located in the heart of it," states Zeid Ammari, Chief Operating Officer of Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts, the parent company of Kingfish. "While we may not have any hauntings to speak of at Kingfish, Chef Richard's incredible "Odd Bites" menu lets your imagination play tricks on you this Halloween season." The five-course dinner is $55 per person, and reservations can be made by calling (504) 598.5005. For more information please visit www.kingfishneworleans.com

A Very Special Wine Dinner at Commander's Palace

Commander's Palace Celebrates the Wines of Château de la Font du Loup
Wednesday, October 28th, 6:30 pm
Join us at Commander's Palace for an evening of food, wine and friends as Winemaker Anne-Charlotte Melia teams up with Chef Tory McPhail and Wine Guy Dan Davis for a mouthwatering five-course meal paired with amazing wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Charlotte's family estate, Chateau La Font du Loup (the fountain of the wolf), is both a the name of the property in the heart of this famous region, and of the natural spring in the center of the estate. Legend has it that wolves from nearby Mont Ventoux would stop to drink at the spring as they made their way to the Provençal plains. The Château was acquired by the Melia family in 1942. Today, Anne-Charlotte Melia, the granddaughter of the founder, and her husband, Laurent, oversee the estate and the winemaking.

We visited Charlotte in June and were very impressed by the elegance of her wines that she says is a product of their unique terroir. The location of the vineyards at the top of a north facing hill, and the sandy soil (similar to close by and legendary Château Rayas) give her wines a freshness and delicacy not often found in the region. And as for her part in it, Charlotte wants her wines to express that sense of place by ensuring that the wines are never over-extracted, are vinified at cool temperatures and that no new oak is ever used.

Our tasting at Swirl with Charlotte sold out very quickly, but this will give you an even better opportunity to taste the wines at one of New Orleans iconic restaurants.  Make your reservations now by calling Morgan at 504-207-9312 or by sending her an email at [email protected].
You can view the menu here and I hope we see you at Commander's on Wednesday!

CITY ISSUES TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR FILMORE AREA
NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City of New Orleans issued a traffic advisory to temporarily close portions of Prentiss Ave. and St. Bernard Ave. in the Filmore area. The City is currently reconstructing St. Bernard Ave. between Robert E. Lee Blvd. and Filmore Ave.
On Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, Prentiss Ave. near the intersection of St. Bernard Ave. will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. through Monday, Nov. 2 at 5:00 p.m. The closure will allow the construction contractor, Barriere Construction, to excavate the roadway and place a new concrete roadway base over the newly installed utility lines.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, St. Bernard Ave. at Robert E. Lee Blvd. will be closed to through traffic so crews can connect new underground utility lines to existing lines. Through traffic on St. Bernard Ave. will be detoured to nearby crossover streets at Cartier Ave. (lakebound) and Wisner Blvd. (riverbound) beginning at 7 a.m. and lasting through Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015 at 5 p.m. Robert E. Lee Blvd. will remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction. Appropriate detour signage will direct drivers to alternative routes.
The approximately $7.6 million St. Bernard Ave. Reconstruction project was designed by Digital Engineering. The construction contract was awarded to Barriere Construction and is approximately 28 percent complete.  Construction is scheduled to last through spring 2016.
Residents should exercise caution when driving, bicycling, or walking near active construction sites.

Sea to Table - Sustainable Seafood and Wine Pairing at Broad Street
  • Food and Drink

Whole Foods Market's Louisiana stores will host a series of Sea to Table events in October, highlighting Gulf seafood through demonstrations by local chefs and tours of store seafood departments.

Sea to Table attendees will be able to sample chefs' recipes featuring Gulf seafood, and can enjoy wine pairings. Cost is $25 per person, with all ticket sales benefiting Audubon Nature Institute G.U.L.F. and Louisiana Sea Grant. During the department tours, partners Audubon G.U.L.F., Louisiana Sea Grant and LSU AgCenter will share information on sustainable practices, and Whole Foods Market team members will discuss the company's sustainability efforts and ratings system.

"Sea to Table is a great opportunity to learn more about how seafood is sourced while tasting delicious recipes you can emulate at home," said Kristina Bradford, Louisiana community and media relations coordinator for Whole Foods Market. "These chefs are ready to show some of the ways they love to cook Gulf seafood while supporting these great community partners."

As the only national grocer with full traceability from the water to the store, Whole Foods Market has made moving the seafood industry toward greater sustainability and creating healthy ecosystems, part of its mission. The company does not sell red-rated wild caught seafood, and it sources from areas where fish are most abundant, and where fisheries are managed well. In addition, Whole Foods Market does not carry genetically modified or cloned seafood.

Whole Foods Market orders seafood daily to meet customer demands and accepts special orders with notice. Its fishmongers can help shoppers decide among a variety of responsibly caught or farmed seafood. They can also cut to order and offer cooking tips and recipe ideas.

Serving as Whole Foods Market's Louisiana distributor, Inland Seafood ensures 100 percent traceability from boat to table with no sulfites or additives like tripolyphosphates, which make shrimp retain water and weigh more. Through sustainable practices, the fishermen supplying Whole Foods Market stores are following standards of low impact to the environment and to fishery populations, while providing the freshest, highest quality seafood.

For more information on Whole Foods Market's seafood sourcing and aquaculture practices, visitwholefoodsmarket.com/seafood.

Jazz @ the Sandbar was established in 1990 by Ellis Marsalis, the first Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of the Jazz Studies Program at UNO. The series is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience. Concerts are presented on Wednesday nights during the fall and spring semesters and feature a different respected jazz artist each week. Jazz @ the Sandbar provides a medium for our students to exercise their improvisational skills and gives them the rare opportunity to work with jazz masters.

The Wednesday concerts continue with these special guest artists:

A Birthday Tribute to Harold Battiste
*             November 4 - Guitarist / Banjoist Carl LeBlanc
*             November 11 - Saxophonist Jason Marshall
*             November 18 - Quintology Reunion
October 14 Jazz @ the Sandbar: Gabriel Alegria & Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón

The St. Bernard Parish Library presents a free community service event, "Ask a Lawyer" Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2600 Palmisano Blvd. in Chalmette.  Two attorneys will be present and participants are able to book appointments in half hour increments by calling the library at 504.279.0448.  Walk-ins are welcome, but wait times may vary.
Janet Perez said the St. Bernard Parish Library in Chalmette held the event last year and they are looking forward to a big turnout this year.  Perez is also in charge of the library's children's programs, all of which are free and open to the community.
Attorneys will be available for one-on-one consultations in the foyer of the library on subjects such as: Bankruptcy, Civil Lawsuits, Collection Matters, Custody, Divorce, Evictions, FEMA/Disaster Benefits, Food Stamps, Foreclosures, Housing, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, Successions, Taxes and Wills.
Perez said that St. Bernard Parish Library, in partnership with the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Louisiana Library Association, is presenting this as a part of a statewide program called "Lawyers in Libraries."
The program was designed to partner with libraries to direct low-income individuals to available legal assistance, and to educate the general public on why and where they may find representation.
LSBA President Mark Cunningham said the program is committed to helping people find an attorney who will represent them for free if they cannot afford one.  This program was intended to make lawyers accessible to people who need legal services without financial obligation.

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Walking to New Orleans
When: Thursdays-Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31

The musical show featuring Al "Lil Fats" Jackson and Shamarr Allen dramatizes the musical collaboration of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, who produced a string of R&B hits in the 1950s. At 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Carver Theater.

Just in time for Halloween, The Theatre at St. Claude is going to turn out the lights and say "boo" in the dark.

Dracula is coming.

Here's hoping to see you in Transylvania.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Tickets Available October  29th Only

Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Considered one of the Bard's supreme achievements, King Lear depicts the title character's descent into madness after he foolishly divides his kingdom based on the flattery of two of his three daughters, rather than on their loyalty and love. The strife that results as bonds of blood and marriage are tested and sundered brings tragic consequences for all, as the elderly Lear, belatedly realizing his terrible mistake, sets out on a course of revenge that ends only in despair.

It will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at multiple venues in downtown Baton Rouge.

Author and architectural photographer Robert S. Brantley will be joined by THNOC editor Dorothy Ball to discuss the process behind the making of "Henry Howard," an extensively researched project that returns the once forgotten architect to his rightful place. The hardcover book features 330 historical and contemporary images, and will be available for purchase at the event.

Released in July, "The Katrina Decade" presents more than 125 haunting black-and-white images capturing the melancholy beauty of recovery, neglect and endurance in the 10 years since Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee breaches battered New Orleans. The hardcover book includes essays by Spielman, preservationist and journalist Davis and photographic historian John H. Lawrence, and will be available for purchase at the event.

Discussion of "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), with retired THNOC senior curator and historian John T. Magill

John T. Magill recently retired as senior curator and historian from The Historic New Orleans Collection, where he worked for more than 30 years. He has written and lectured extensively about the urban history and infrastructure of New Orleans, as well as the history of Mardi Gras and historic fashion. He contributed an introduction on Prohibition-era New Orleans to "Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z" (LSU Press 2015), which serves up recipes from the speakeasy era. The satirical, richly illustrated book, which will be available for purchase at the event, brings to life the spirit and spirits of a jazz city in the Jazz Age, offering a cultural snapshot of the Crescent City's resistance to Prohibition.

December 16,2015

The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
