Construction set to begin on former Pythian building in CBD
A long-vacant downtown office building that played a key role in both the cultural and military history of the city is now slated for a mixed-use redevelopment.

An $18.6 million building permit was issued Oct. 29 for 234 Loyola Ave., where environmentally-focused developer Green Coast Enterprises is working with nonprofit real estate investor Crescent City Community Land Trust and local developer Dr. Eric George's ERG Enterprises on a residential, retail, and commercial conversion of the nine-story, 107-year-old building.
Green Coast principal partner Will Bradshaw said his firm closed Friday on the financing for construction and work is set to begin Nov. 16. The building will reopen in early 2017.
"This is a building that embodies an extraordinary part of New Orleans history that is being redeveloped by New Orleanians for New Orleanians," Bradshaw said. "I'm incredibly proud to be a part of this project."
Bradshaw, whose firm purchased the building in 2014 for $4.8 million, said the redevelopment includes 69 one- and two-bedroom apartments, with 25 of those units set aside for moderate-income workforce housing. He said the goal is to attract residents who can't afford market-rate units downtown but earn too much for subsidized housing.
"We want to fill some of that demand and allow a broader range of residents the chance to live downtown," Bradshaw said.
The lower floors of the building will include roughly 40,000 square feet of commercial space. Bradshaw said tenants include a health care clinic, a physical therapy center and a 20,000-square-foot public market handling both pre-cooked and fresh foods. The market will be similar to what is now being offered at St. Roch Market and the new Dryades Public Market inside the former Myrtle Banks Elementary School building in Central City.
"The project will transform this historic asset into a development that will cater to the entire community," Bradshaw said.
Financing for the development includes both state and federal Historic Redevelopment Tax Credits, New Markets Tax Credits and some private capital from a host of investors, Bradshaw said.
Self-made millionaire and son of a former slave Samuel L. Green spearheaded construction of the building in 1909 for roughly $200,000. Green at the time was Supreme Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Louisiana, an African-American fraternal order that spawned from a Civil War-era organization founded in 1864.
The building, known as the Pythian Temple, housed offices, lodge rooms, a barbershop, a theater, a bank, an opera house, an auditorium, and a rooftop garden.
In 1923, the order added a double-height eighth floor that housed a dance hall for many of the city's influential jazz musicians. The hall showcased music into the 1930's, when the Great Depression led to its closure.
The knights were forced to sell the building in 1941 to pay off outstanding debts. In 1943, boat builder Andrew Jackson Higgins leased the property as a hiring office. His company manufactured the famed landing craft used to shuttle Allied troops onto the beaches of Normandy at the start of the U.S. involvement in World War II battlefields. Higgins maintained the top-floor dance hall as a place for soldiers and sailors to gather before being sent off to war.
The building received a modern makeover in the 1950s, when the owners covered its original façade of ornate stone and brick with a contemporary steel and glass wall cladding. It was renamed the Civic Center building and housed various offices for the next 40 years, including a campaign headquarters for President Dwight Eisenhower. In 2000, the building was left mostly vacant.
The first phase of redevelopment began late last year, when contractors with Landis Construction began stripping away the cladding to reveal the original brick and stone exterior. Landis Construction president Christian Generes said his firm is working closely with project designers at Studio WTA to restore the original neo-classical façade features, which were damaged by the metal cladding, and replace the original windows.
Meanwhile on the inside, Generes said a historic stairwell and plaster wall will be restored, and reclaimed wood from the top floor will be reused. He said developers are hopeful that the project will garner a "gold" certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED program, but added that they are assured it will secure a "silver" rating.

Fresh & Local Over 20 years ago, Richard McCarthy, Sharon Litwin and John Abajian brought together the very first Crescent City Farmers Market. Since that fateful Saturday morning, we've come a long way. We've opened more markets, made delicious local food available to more people, and helped markets across the country grow, all while maintaining our roots. Like the market, Richard has always stayed true to his goals of building communities around a love of food, tradition and health. We welcome Richard, the current Executive Director of Slow Food USA, back to the CCFM this Saturday along with another very special guest: Edie Mukiibi, Vice President of Slow Food International, as part of Slow Food's Good News From Africa Food Sovereignty Tour. Join us for coffee as we talk about some of the most pressing food issues facing our society.

Recipe of the Week
Nothing says autumn like a warm bowl of soup. Apples and cushaw are two fall flavors that find blissful harmony when combined in a large pot. Many of our vendors have a wonderful variety of squash and pumpkins. Last week our friends from Press St. Garden, the garden at NOCCA, had a behemoth pumpkin that weighed over 20 pounds! That's a lot of soup.

 Apple Cushaw Soup
Nothing says autumn like a warm bowl of soup. Apples and cushaw are two fall flavors that find blissful harmony when combined in a large pot. Many of our vendors have a wonderful variety of squash and pumpkins. Last week our friends from Press St. Garden, the garden at NOCCA, had a behemoth pumpkin that weighed over 20 pounds! That's a lot of soup.
Ingredients
  • 1 large cushaw squash
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons neutral cooking oil
  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored and quartered
  • 4 cups vegetable stock or water
  • 1 cup rice milk
  • ¼ cup coconut milk
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Sea salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper
Directions
Peel squash, cut in half and remove seeds. Cut into 2 inch pieces.
In large pot over medium heat, saute onion in oil until soft, about 5 minutes. Add squash, apples, stock, rice milk, coconut milk, and nutmeg. Cover, bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes or until squash is soft. Puree, in batches, in a blender or with an immersion blender. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Smart Shopping tip: Wash and store your vegetable scraps (squash peelings, onion ends, celery leaves, etc) in a bag in the freezer to make homemade vegetable stock. Once the bag is full add the scraps to a big pot of water and simmer on low for 30-60 minutes.

Coastal community leaders to discuss climate change at Tulane

Four leaders from some of Louisiana's most vulnerable coastal communities will discuss climate change and other environmental issues Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 5:30 p.m. at Tulane University.
The panel will be moderated by NPR national correspondent Debbie Elliott, who has covered such issues as the BP oil spill, the disappearing Louisiana coast and post-Katrina New Orleans. It will take place at Freeman Auditorium on the uptown campus.
Speakers include Theresa Dardar, a member of the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe and a board member of Gulf Organized Fisheries in Solidarity & Hope in Terrebonne Parish; Tyrone Edwards, a fifth generation resident of Phoenix, Louisiana in Plaquemines Parish and pastor of Zion Travelers Baptist Church; Minh Nguyen, the founder and executive director of VAYLA-New Orleans (Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association) in New Orleans East; and Rosina Philippe, a member of the Atakapa-Ishak Tribe and a community advocate in Grand Bayou Village, also in Plaquemines Parish.
"The four featured speakers have deep connections to the communities they represent - communities that are on the front lines of changes that are coming to residents of New Orleans and coastal cities around the world," said Tulane history professor Andy Horowitz, who is organizing the program.
"As Louisiana sinks into the Gulf of Mexico, coastal communities face wrenching challenges: How do we balance our commitment to the places we live with our need for safety? What is government's role in this crisis, and what is ours? How can our communities stay connected even as the land under our feet falls apart?"
The event is part of the School of Liberal Arts "The Katrina Disaster Now" series. It is co-sponsored by the Environmental Studies Program, The Tulane Environmental Law Clinic and WWNO. It is free and open to the public and will be followed by a catered reception.

Pre-Dating Speed Dating!
Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 6:30 PM )

Why Check Out Speed Dating?

By now you know it takes meeting a number of people before you find someone you click with. (Sometimes it seems like hundreds!). The problem is, how do you meet them in the first place? There are bars, blind dates, dating services, online, etc. but they all have their disadvantages and they take time...lots of it. Plus it's no fun (is it?!) to risk rejection over and over again, striking up conversations with people you don't even know are single, if you even get the courage to speak to them in the first place, and if the conversation goes well it is still awkward exchanging phone numbers!

With Speed Dating, you meet up to 12 (and sometimes more) singles within your age range in about 2 hours. Afterwards, if there's interest (you discreetly circle on your interest sheet who you would like to hear from again), you'll get an email with links to contact these event participants. There's no pressure, no rejection, no embarrassment and no games!

These events are posted in other Meetup Groups, online calendars and websites, so we get a great mix of different people! The events fill up fast, so if you wait too long, you may end up on a waiting list.

Your RSVP here does not hold your place on the roster! You will need to register and save your spot at the next event at www.Pre-Dating.com/NO. Why not try it?

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Welcome to Jazz Notes!
Keeping you informed about the
UNO Jazz Program
Next Jazz @ the Sandbar Show
Sandbar Jazz
Sandbar Jazz

Next Wednesday, November 11, UNO welcomes baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. Marshall will perform with the Thelonious Monk Ensemble directed by Steve Masakowski, and the vocalist combo led by Victor Atkins.

Jason Marshall's 2003 arrival in New York City signified the continuation of hard swinging, forward thinking baritone saxophone playing. With early encouragement to appreciate all types of music, Jason has developed a style that encompasses the whole of African-American music. His music is an amalgamation of soul, R&B and funk with straight-ahead jazz. Years of dedication and perseverance have resulted in a giant, soulful sound and instantly appealing concept. Influences such as Leo Parker, Nick Brignola and Bruce Johnstone have coalesced to ensure an open perception of the baritone sax and a "take-no-prisoners" approach to playing jazz music.

Jason has studied with the elite baritone saxophone specialists of the 20th century including Hamiett Bluiett, Ronnie Cuber and Gary Smulyan. These three masters of the instrument have contributed invaluably to Jason Marshall's ability. Other teachers include altoists Bruce Williams, Mark Gross, Steve Wilson, Vincent Herring, and tenor players Greg Tardy and Paul Carr.

Jason's formative musical experiences include stints with the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra and Bluesman Roy Gaines. He is currently playing and touring with Roy Hargrove's band "RH Factor" and the Roy Hargrove Big Band. Jason's band "Overt Negritude" is preparing to record its debut album.

Jason has also conducted numerous demonstrations, clinics and workshops at every level of education throughout the world.

Jazz @ the Sandbar was established in 1990 by Ellis Marsalis, the first Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of the Jazz Studies Program at UNO. The series is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience. Concerts are presented on Wednesday nights during the fall and spring semesters and feature a different respected jazz artist each week. Jazz @ the Sandbar provides a medium for our students to exercise their improvisational skills and gives them the rare opportunity to work with jazz masters.

Join us for the final Jazz@theSandbar concert on November 18, featuring a special reunion of the once popular local jazz band "Quintology."

Jazz @ the Sandbar is presented by the UNO Jazz Studies Program with support from the UNO Student Government Association, the New Orleans Jazz Celebration, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, WWNO FM, OffBeat Magazine, and the New Orleans Theatre Association (NOTA). For more information, call the UNO Music Department at (504)280-6039 or New Orleans Jazz Celebration (504)309-JAZZ, or visit us on the web at www.nojc.org/sandbar.

Concert times: 7:00 - 9:30pm.
Location: The Cove, Founders Road, UNO Lakefront Campus.
General Admission: $5.00 at the door.
Faculty, Staff & Student Admission: FREE w/ UNO ID Card.

  • Ogden After Hours - Kenny Brown
  • 05:30 PM - 08:00 PM

Blues slide guitarist Kenny Brown plays North Mississippi Hill Country blues. Brown, whose influences include Junior Kimbrough, Johnny Winter, Johnny Shines and Fred McDowell, grew up listening to the sounds of music coming from his neighbor, and the last of the well-known fife players, Othar Turner. He began teaching himself to play guitar when he was ten years old and apprenticed with Mississippi Joe Callicott from ages 12 to 15. By the time he was 18, he was playing and recording with R.L. Burnside, who claimed Brown as his adopted son. The two performed together for nearly 30 years. Brown has appeared on two of Junior Kimbrough's albums, opened for Wide Spread Panic in 2003, and had his guitar work featured in the 2006 film Black Snake Moan. While always giving credit to his mentor Joe Callicott and the roots of his musical past, Kenny still manages to create a style that is his own.

Mélange Dance Company Presents
"Once Upon a Dream: An ethereal journey to
reunite with a love that now only exists in a dream"
as part of Faux/Real Festival 2015
NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans based Mé lange Dance Company presents, as part the Faux/Real Festival of Arts and supported by New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation's Community Partnership G rant , "Once Upon a Dream" on Thursday, November 12th at 7pm and 9pm and Sunday, November 15th at 7pm at the New Orleans Jazz Market 1436 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana 70113.
Conceptualized by Mélange ' s Artistic Director and the show ' s lead choreographer, Monica Ordo ñ ez, "Once Upon a Dream" is inspired by the Native American belief that suggests the soul leaves the body while dreaming to communicate with the deceased; but will the soul return? Haunted by the spirit of a past lover, the show follows one man journeys through interwoven dreams in a desperate attempt to reunite with her, prompting an important decision in the end. Through this adventure, "Once Upon a Dream" explores the surreal nature of dreams and their unpredictable tendency to shift from the memory, to the nightmare, the delusion, and to the day you accidentally went to work in your underwear!
Monica Ordo ñ ez was previously nominated for two 2014 Big Easy Awards. "Once Upon a Dream" also features pieces choreographed by Mélange's Executive Director Alexa Erck Lambert, Dancer Laudrey Cody , and Dancer Taylor Hosemann. The show will include a film collaboration with Bradley Stire, costume curation by Kaci Thomassie of KC Thomassie Designs, and Shena Troia of The Commune Vintage.

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club

Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

The Addams Family - A New Musical Comedy
November 8 - 22 on the Main Stage
They're Back!!!  The spooky spirit of Halloween fun will continue at Rivertown Theaters with the metropolitan New Orleans premiere of the Broadway hit musical, The Addams Family, and the unforgettable and familiar cast of characters who entertained us weekly on television during the mid-sixties.

The lovable family of creepy kooks is alive and well and living in their super-spooky mansion in Central Park. The Addams family, led by the elegantly gaunt and seemingly undead Morticia and her ever-devoted husband Gomez, is in turmoil. Their daughter Wednesday, now 18, finds herself falling in love - a sensation that is unsettling for both her and her family of endearing misfits. When the teen invites her new boyfriend over with his "normal" family to get better acquainted with the Addams household, comic chaos (including everything from an amorous giant squid to mixed-up potions to a scorching tango) ensues. This magnificently macabre new musical comedy is created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice. The original story and score may be new to audiences, but the iconic characters, including Lurch, Grandmama, Pugsley, and Uncle Fester, remain. Come meet the family. We'll leave the lights "off" for you!

Simply Irma: Grammy Award winner Irma Thomas will play herself in this musical production that documents the pitfalls and successes of her dramatic music career.  You will sing and dance in the aisles to her many hits, such as It's Raining, You Can Have My Husband, Ruler of My Heart, I Wish Someone Would Care, Hip Shaking Mama, and many more!

The unrivaled Soul Queen of New Orleans -- a title officially bestowed by local officials is New Orleans' most enduring musical ambassador.  "She remains one of America's most distinctive and classic singers, a treasure from the golden age of soul music who remains as compelling and powerful as ever..." says Rounder Records.

HistoryMakers reports, "Blues vocalist Irma Thomas was born Irma Lee on February 18, 1941, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. She was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended New Orleans' McDonald 41 public school. Thomas displayed her early vocal talents as a teen. She sang with a Baptist church choir and a gospel quartet at Home Mission Baptist Church. Her very first recording was a school song, which was recorded at Cosmo's studio with fellow classmates. At the age of eleven, Thomas won The Ritz Theater's talent night and two years later, she auditioned for Specialty Records.

Her big break came in 1959 when she captured the attention of band leader Tommy Ridgley while she was a waitress at New Orleans' Pimlico Club. Thomas offered to sing with Ridgley and his band against the wishes of her boss, who fired her for singing instead of waiting on tables. Ridgley arranged a recording contract for her with a local label, Ron Records. Her debut single, Dorothy LaBostrie's "You Can Have My Husband, But Please Don't Mess With My Man" hit #22 on the Billboard R&B charts in May 1960. Thomas felt that Ron Records did not pay her the royalties she deserved, so she left them to join the Minit record label. Most of her early 1960s Minit recordings were written and produced by Allen Toussaint and were strong regional sellers. In 1963, Minit was bought by Imperial Records. Thomas' first single with Imperial, "Wish Someone Would Care," was the biggest hit of her career and reached #17 on Billboard's pop charts in the spring of 1964. Thomas released nine singles and two albums during her three-year period with the Imperial label. During the 1960s, Thomas was a popular performer on the Southern college circuit. In 1970, Thomas moved to California where she worked at a department store and as an automobile parts salesperson. During this time, she continued working club dates on weekends and also recorded for several labels, including Atlantic Records in 1971. In the mid-1970s, she moved back to New Orleans where she remained popular as a live performer.

Her comeback as a recording artist started in 1986 when she produced an album, The New Rules, with Scott Billington of Rounder Records. Thomas received her first Grammy nomination in 1991. She received her second Grammy nomination in 1998 along with Marcia Ball and Tracy Nelson. She has continued to maintain an active recording and touring schedule since. Thomas married her manager, Emile Jackson, in 1977. Together, they owned and operated a night club in New Orleans called the Lion's Den until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Thomas has a total of seven children."

The Anthony Bean Community Theater (ABCT) was established in Spring 2000 to meet the growing demands of New Orleans area residents seeking a quality, culturally diverse, performing arts venue. The theater also met the needs of individuals seeking to learn the art of acting, set design and theatre management. In recent years, ABCT has become a vehicle to enter New Orleans' booming "Hollywood South" film industry.

Learn how a small fighting force, faced with limited resources and insurmountable odds, combined new technologies and untested tactics to integrate air power with ground forces, which enhanced the fighting capabilities of the US forces. This was accomplished under fire from the enemy and through a clash of cultures, all while thousands of miles away from the United States in the remote islands of the Pacific.

This lively reenactment takes you there as Bob Hope presents a bevy of beauties: Judy Garland, the Andrews Sisters, Deanna Durbin, Carmen Miranda, and Frances Langford, bringing levity and music to war-zone islands during WWII. A talented cast of 14 including our Victory Swing Band perform many nostalgic gems such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Stormy Weather, I'll Be Seeing You, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and, of course, Thanks for the Memories.

December 16,2015

The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
