Fresh & Local
The countdown has begun. Have you started prepping ingredients? Did you polish your nice silverware? Still trying to decide which side dish to sit closest to? Thanksgiving is a special time of year when we throw caution to the wind as we let our feast pile high on the plate. If you're still looking for inspiration, come chat with Poppy Tooker at our Tuesday market where she'll be signing copies of her newest book "Tujague's Cookbook". And to really get you into the holiday spirit, come support Second Harvest in their effort to collect donations at our Tuesday market for families that are struggling to get food on the table this Thanksgiving. Nothing beats fresh food for the holidays!

Pick of the Week:
Peoples Health!
CCFM shoppers know that consuming plenty of locally grown fruits and vegetables is key to both personal health and building healthy communities. Given our focus on health, we were thrilled to have our friends from Peoples Health join us at our Downtown Saturday market this past week to share information about their nationally recognized innovative solutions that support the health and vitality of their plan members. Established in 1994, Peoples Health provides Medicare beneficiaries in Louisiana with Medicare benefits and services designed to help them optimize their health. Visit their website to learn more about the incredible work that they do!

Tuesday's Green Plate Special
Frencheeze has treated us well these past few weeks. We laughed, we ate, we argued about which sandwich is our favorite, then we ate some more. They've assured us that their last hurrah at market shouldn't be missed, so stop by to make some groceries and hang out for lunch. Stay tuned for December's exciting Green Plate Special!

Recipe of the Week
Mirlitons are Louisiana's Fall season pride and joy. Shrimp Stuffed Mirliton is best when made with Louisiana mirlitons and Gulf shrimp, both of which are abundant in markets right now. It's up to our market community to make sure that the heirloom mirliton varieties which have grown in our region for decades continue to flourish for decades more, so eat up!

Recipe of the Week
Shrimp Stuffed Mirliton
Ingredients
  • 3 mirlitons, halved along the visible vertical line
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped ham
  • 1 cup small (50-60 count) shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1-1/2 cups cubed stale French bread, soaked in water and drained (see Note)
  • 1-1/2 cups chicken stock
  • 1/2 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 4 teaspoons Crystal hot sauce or other Louisiana hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
Boil mirliton halves in salted water for 20 to 25 minutes or until tender. Drain and scoop out the meat, reserving both the meat and the shell and discarding the seeds. Chop mirliton meat. Set aside along with mirliton shells.

Melt butter in a medium sauté pan; add celery, onion, and bell pepper; sauté until translucent. Add ham, shrimp, and bay leaves; sauté until shrimp turn pink. Add bread and chicken stock and cook over medium-high heat for 5 to 6 minutes. Add reserved mirliton meat, bread crumbs, green onions, parsley, hot sauce, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and salt; stir to mix thoroughly. Cook for 5 minutes, then remove from heat to cool.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spoon stuffing mixture into reserved mirliton shells. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Note: For best results in any stuffing with French bread, the bread should not be soggy. So, after soaking the bread, place bread in a colander in the sink and press out any remaining water with your hands.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

November   26-29

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Walking to New Orleans
When: Thursdays-Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31
The show dramatizes the work of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew at Carver Theater. The musical show featuring Al "Lil Fats" Jackson and Shamarr Allen dramatizes the musical collaboration of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, who produced a string of R&B hits in the 1950s. At 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Carver Theater.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
T wo charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Meet the artists behind Mardi Gras on Small Biz Saturday!
Ever wonder who creates the beautiful works of art adorning Mardi Gras floats each Carnival season? Some of the most talented artists behind Mardi Gras will be present at Miette to share their float art and answer questions about their traditional parade work on Nov. 28.

Owner of the local art boutique, Angee Jackson, and several long-time New Orleans parade designers and decoration artists fear that big-name Mardi Gras studios threaten the tradition of authentic art in Mardi Gras float parades. They have made it their mission to keep this unique local art form alive beginning with the unveiling of their extraordinary hand-crafted float art on display and for purchase this Small Business Saturday.

Visitors to the shop will be able to take selfies with the display of giant Mardi Gras flowers and winged creatures hanging from the ceilings and walls, purchase a locally made gift for a loved one, and speak to the artists who will be present to answer questions about the craftsmanship of Carnival.

One of the featured artists, Thomas Randolph Morrison, spearheaded the rise of the Krewe of Hermes, sculpted the Tribute to a River God adorning the pediment of Harrah's Casino for local legend George Dureau, and created the mysterious New Orleans Gargoyles  that hang from chimneys, clock towers, residences and even a former synagogue on Jackson Avenue.

The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
