Gallier House Presents 19th-century
Funereal and Mourning Customs

November 5, the Gallier House, located at 1132 Royal Street, will offer specialized tours that interpret 19th-century funereal and mourning customs. Prominent architect James Gallier, Jr., his wife and their young family lived in New Orleans--a city wracked by war, epidemics, and calamitous disasters.  Grief descended upon the Gallier household in October 1866, when news arrived that patriarch James Gallier, Sr., and his second wife drowned at sea aboard the S.S. Evening Star. The passenger steamship, destined for New Orleans from New York, sank in a late-season hurricane off the coast of Georgia.

Gallier House museum will be in mourning as we commemorate the death of the senior Galliers.  During the Victorian era, almost every aspect of everyday life, from clothes to china, were changed to reflect the family's grief.  The front entry of the home was swathed in black crepe, as were mirrors and the deceased's portrait. Clocks were stopped at the hour of death, and even children's toys reflected the solemn mood. Displays of distinctive funeral attire and many Victorian mourning articles will provide visitors to the Gallier House with an uncommon look into the past.

James Gallier, Jr. designed and commissioned an elaborate marble memorial in St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery to honor his father.  An inscription on the marker reads "...by his son in tribute to his [father's] genius, integrity and virtue." Unfortunately, James Gallier, Jr. died less than two years after his father in May 1868.  Compounding her husband's untimely death, the widowed Algaé Gallier also lost her mother and sister in quick succession.

National Doughnut Day - November 5
NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY
November 5 is one of two National Doughnut Days observed by doughnut lovers across the nation. The first Friday in June is the other day doughnuts steal the bakery case spotlight ready to tease their way into white bakery box home!
For more information on the National Doughnut Day celebrated in June, click here.
The history of the doughnut is disputed:
  • One theory suggests Dutch settlers brought doughnuts to North America much like they brought other traditional American desserts including cookies, apple pie, cream pie and cobbler.
  • An American, Hanson Gregory, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847 while on board a lime-trading ship at the age of 16.  According to Gregory, he punched a hole in the center of dough with the ship's tin pepper box and later taught the technique to his mother.
  • Anthropologist Paul R Mullins states the first cookbook mentioning doughnuts was an 1803 English volume which included doughnuts in an appendix of American recipes.
  • An 1808 short story describing a spread of "fire-cakes and dough-nuts" is the earliest known recorded usage of the term doughnut.
  • A more commonly cited first written recording of the word is Washington Irving's reference to doughnuts in 1809 in his History of New York.  He described balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat and called doughnuts.  Today, these nuts of fried dough are called doughnut holes.

LadyFest New Orleans Presents
YeMaYa parade is in the Lower 9th Ward on Saturday
The YeMaYa parade was started five years ago as a parade highlighting women marching groups from across New Orleans. On Saturday, Nov. 5, the parade moves to the Lower 9th Ward, a place that founder Ann Marie Coviello says will more "spiritually resonate" with the intentions behind the parade, named after the Yoruban sea goddess who is believed to protect women, children and the water.

"We wanted to bring the spirit to the place where water has mattered more than anywhere else in the city, and that's the Lower Nine," Coviello said. "It really resonates, to visit the water."

This year's event includes a ceremony of praise, offerings, and blessings led by Sula Evans at the Mississippi River in honor of YeMaYa.

Also new this year is the Slow Danger Brass Band, which will accompany the Ye-Ma-Ya-Yas, a pop-up group of local women vocalists who sing songs and chants to YeMaYa.

The parade begins at 2 p.m. at the Backyard Juke Joint at 5443 Douglass St.The joint also is the home of guerrilla librarian, Laurence Copel, who runs the Lower Ninth Ward Street Library and is the founder of the Lower Ninth Ward Book Parade. It will then tumble to Cafe Dauphine, Mercedes Bar and the Mississippi River bank and return to the Backyard Juke Joint.

Coviello is a New Orleans public school teacher and longtime parade marcher who founded the Box of Wine Mardi Gras parade and co-founded the 6t9 Social Aid and Pleasure Club. She came up with the idea for YeMaYa while working on a research project about the role women play in New Orleans walking parades. Eventually, she realized that she didn't want to write about women parading. She wanted to celebrate them by parading with them.

YeMaYa debuted in November 2011 in conjunction with the fifth annual LadyFest, a nonprofit event celebrating women artists and musicians. The parade featured women's marching groups on a route through Treme, Marigny and the French Quarter.

The concept resonated with women in Carnival marching groups and social aid and pleasure clubs. More than 25 organizations participated that first year, and many women's marching group in the city has stepped in time with YeMaYa, including The Pussyfooters, the Camel Toe Lady Steppers, The Black Storyville Baby Dolls, Mardi Gras Indian Queens, the Bearded Oysters, Lady Buckjumpers Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Lady Rollers and Jazzy Ladies.

The parade as evolved, Coviello says. Now, instead of a "shake your tail feathers" kind of event, the parade has more intention and spirituality behind it.

"The very original concept was that this parade gave a way to give women parading groups a chance to really be the main event," Coviello said. "But that's changed over time. Almost all ladies groups have a lot of exposure now."

Men are welcome to march in the parade as well. There is no fee to participate but a raffle held on parade day will help support the event. Costumes are encouraged but not required. YeMaYa's colors are blue, green, silver and white.

New Orleans is one of the few remaining American cities that truly appreciates the importance of wonder -- the need to cultivate that feeling, to create something that makes people feel, if only for a moment, like a kid again. Music Box Village, New Orleans' most unique music venue, is more than just that, of course. It'll be a home for performances, and a space to host unique artists from all over the country. But it will also be a place that people visit to feel wonder, to embrace whimsical beauty, and to get lost.

The Music Box Village has been a roaming pop-up space for a while in our city, but it now finally has a permanent home in a grove of trees at 4557 North Rampart Street. The venue is partially outdoors, built into the environment, a place to discover, explore, love.

The venue will be open daily from noon to 5:00 p.m. for exploration, then ticketed performances will be held starting at 7:00 p.m. each night. Tickets are available online at their website

Rubem Robierb
Juxtaposed

November 5 - 26, 2016

Please join us for a reception with the artist
Saturday, November 5, 6 - 8pm
Rubem Robierb, Blue High Voltage Heart on Silver, Blue and Purple Explosion, 2016, Hand painting, silkscreen and stencil on canvas, 38 x 38 inches

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by Brazilian artist Rubem Robierb.

Robierb is best known for his vibrantly colored images that combine South American-Miami style with a hard New York edge. His unique working style incorporates richly layered screen-printing, hand and spray painting, diamond dust, and new non-traditional mediums such as neon signs. In this exhibition, Robierb playfully juxtaposes cultural references, while exploring socio-cultural issues that define our current times, as exemplified in his HEART, Bullets and Butterflies, and Power Flowers series.

In Robierb's HEART pieces, he highlights the idea that human emotion often is transferred through a plethora of external communicative objects like signs, emojis, words, and symbols. The heart holds such strong emotional, symbolic value and when juxtaposed with everyday signage and phrases, the underlying powerfulness of each emotion becomes even more evident - or adversely less. The outcome is a collection of ironic, edgy, political and critical messages in the artworks that effectively display Robierb's personal vision of the world. The visually compelling and symbolically profound experience causes the beholder to reflect on both the universal and deeply personal question of "what is love?"

Within the Bullets and Butterflies series, the Hybrid Pearl Butterfly on Black has been divided into two identical, yet mirrored life-size paintings of each wing. The bullet, acting as the creature's body, is materialized into a 37-inch tall aluminum bullet sculpture. With the wings being human-scale and the oversized bullet in between, it becomes a strong symbol of human-made power. The viewers can easily position themselves - both mentally and physically - between the two wings and feel the fragility of life through their interaction with the artwork as they become both the bullet and the butterfly. The bullet itself, encrusted in Swarovski crystals, underlines humankind's desirability and glamorization of the bullet - even through it is one of the most deadly objects.

In Robierb's Power Flowers, he is connecting his own narrative of bullets and war, with Andy Warhol's iconic "Flower" paintings. Upon close inspection, the presumed Warhol flower is not a flower at all - it is a bullet that has been shot from a gun and has exploded. The merely "pretty picture" is corrupted and the optical truth of the artwork is revealed. Robierb's work makes the viewer consciously aware of how violence and war corrupts our vision. The works contemplate the juxtaposition of how beautiful and sad our "pop-war culture" has become.
Artist Rubem Robierb will be in attendance at the opening!

Internationally Acclaimed Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg Performs Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Loyola Orchestra November 5

Montage Fine & Performing Arts Series - November
Internationally acclaimed violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the Loyola Chamber Orchestra will perform an audience favorite, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, when they take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016 at the Roussel Performance Hall at Loyola. Tickets are available for purchase online,

through the Loyola College of Music and Fine Arts at 504-865-2074 or via email at tickets@loyno.edu.

The Four Seasons is a group of four violin concerti, written in 1723 by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives a musical expression to a season of the year. The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. In a move unusual for the time, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems (possibly written by Vivaldi himself) that expressed what it was about those seasons that his music was intended to evoke. The Four Seasons provides one of the earliest and most-detailed examples of what was later called program music-music with a narrative element. Join us as Loyola students and Nadja perform this incredible classic!

Dear Friends,

As we all careen together towards the election on Tuesday, it has been a tremendous gift to be able to escape the anxieties of the day rehearsing Freud's Last Session with two of the finest actors I've had the pleasure of working with.

Kenneth Tigar (Freud) you will recognize from his extensive screen career, which includes House of Cards, Barney Miller and Lethal Weapon 2(!) to name just a few.  Michael A. Newcomer's magnificent C.S. Lewis is his perfect foil.

This weekend, I invite you all to take a break from the grind and enter the dynamic, fascinating, and surprisingly humorous world of Freud's Last Session.  I promise you're going to love it.

Warmly,
Maxwell

Come Beam with Pride and Patriotism as the Hit Musical
Celebrates the Birth of America's Independence
Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts in Kenner's                    Rivertown will be the center of the most entertaining political process in history when the Tony Award-            winning musical 1776convenes on the Main Stage November 4 -20, just in time to give voters some             relief and diversion from this year's Presidential election mayhem.

Red Cross Says Turn and Test:
Turn Back Clocks, Test Smoke Alarms

New Orleans - Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 6 and the American Red Cross reminds everyone to 'turn' their clocks back an hour and 'test' the batteries in their smoke alarms. The Red Cross recommends that all Southeast Louisiana residents have working smoke alarms on every level of their home, including inside and outside bedrooms.

"Thirteen people have died in home fire-related deaths in Louisiana in the past two months," says Joshua Joachim, regional chief executive for the Louisiana Red Cross. "As temperatures begin to drop, we traditionally see an uptick in home fires around the holidays. Smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half, and turn and test is a quick practice to make sure yours are all in working order."

Statistics from FEMA show that the leading cause of winter home fires is from cooking, particularly around the holidays. Other seasonal features such as candles, Christmas trees, and heating equipment such as radiators, floor heaters and fireplaces also contribute to an increased risk of a home fire.

The Louisiana Red Cross has helped 420 families in the past three months, including more than 460 Southeast Louisiana residents. Two of the 13 home fire-related deaths in Louisiana since Sept. 1 were in Southeast Louisiana. As part of its Home Fire Campaign, a national effort to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over five years, the Red Cross has worked diligently with local partners to make sure families are prepared in the event of a home fire.

Red Cross volunteers this past month partnered with the New Orleans Fire Department and the Jefferson Parish Fire Department, visiting about 300 households in Kenner and Uptown New Orleans. They offered to check smoke alarms and share fire safety information, and installed new smoke alarms in 76 homes.

In the next couple weeks, Red Cross volunteers will teach emergency preparedness, including home fire safety, as part of The Pillowcase Projectto students at Schaumburg Elementary School in New Orleans and a Kenner Montessori school.

"In addition to working smoke alarms, it is also important that families create and practice a fire escape plan," Joachim said. "Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes."

Since October 2014, the Red Cross and partners have saved more than 110 lives nationwide - including 11 here in New Orleans - as part of the Home Fire Campaign.

Turn and test is a time to make sure all households are prepared for home fires and other emergencies:
  • Create and practice a fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes. Select a location outside for everyone to meet.
  • Download the Red Cross Emergency App, which includes content on how to prevent home fires and what to do if one occurs. The Monster Guard: Prepare for Emergencies App is a game designed for kids. Both apps are available for free in app stores or at redcross.org/apps.
LEARN MORE about home fire safety at redcross.org, or contact your local Red cross to find out the location of smoke alarm installation events or to volunteer your time.

The latest must-see show to hit BB's Stage Door Canteen is Pictures of Marilyn, focusing on the life and times of Marilyn Monroe. In 1954, Marilyn Monroe was one of the biggest stars in the world, but she still struggled to take complete control of her life and career. This captivating musical tracks Hollywood's most iconic beauty from her days as a WWII factory worker up to the triumphant establishment of Marilyn Monroe Productions, and features classic tunes like I Wanna Be Loved By You, Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, That's My Marilyn, and more. BB's Stage Door Canteen favorite Courtney Boe plays Marilyn in this original production written exclusively for The National WWII Museum.
