If you or someone you know has had too much to drink during the holidays, deputies in Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes want you to know that they're ready to make sure you get home safely.
Both sheriff's offices have a Holiday Safe Ride Home program that guarantees a free ride.
In Jefferson Parish, anyone who believes they or someone they know has had too much to drink is asked to call 911, and a taxi will be called to pick you up. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office will reimburse taxi companies, but only if the call is dispatched through the 911 Center. You can only be picked up and dropped off in Jefferson Parish.
The safe ride home program in Jefferson Parish begins at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and lasts through midnight New Year's Day.
In St. Bernard Parish, the safe ride home program began on Thanksgiving. So far, 10 people have taken advantage, the sheriff's office said.
St. Bernard Parish's program is the oldest of its kind in the New Orleans area. They've been offering free rides home for 32 years.
"I urge anyone who has been drinking to call us and let us bring them home rather than trying to drive yourself," Sheriff James Pohlmann said. "We don't want you to injure yourself or anyone you may hit while driving drunk. And we don't want to have to arrest you for DWI but we have patrols looking for impaired drivers and you will be taken to jail if you are stopped and are over the legal limit. So don't consider driving drunk. Just call us and arrive home safely."
If you live in St. Bernard Parish, you'll be taken straight home. If your home is outside of St. Bernard Parish, you'll be taken to the sheriff's office to arrange a ride to the parish where you live.

DECEMBER 26 - NATIONAL WHINERS DAY - NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY - NATIONAL THANK YOU NOTE DAY - BOXING DAY

National Whiners Day - December 26
NATIONAL WHINERS DAY
If you want to, you are allowed to whine about being too tired, overeating, having to go back to work, having so much to clean up or the long lines in the return aisle at the store.  December 26 is National Whiners Day.
There is one thing the creator of this day hoped people across the country would not be whining about; this day is not intended for whining about what you did not get for Christmas and what you do not have but to remember all that you do have.
Many people are less fortunate than others. Some are struggling to put food on the table or a roof over their heads; some may not have family and friends. Another family may not have had one gift under the tree. Others may be fighting disease and illnesses, and some may have coped with all of these.  You may want to whine about something (and today you are allowed) but remember to be thankful for each gift you did receive and all that you do have.  (And help others when you can).
HOW TO OBSERVE
Use #NationalWhinersDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
Rev. Kevin Zaborney created National Whiners Day in 1986 in hopes of encouraging people to be thankful for what they have instead of being unhappy "whining" about what they do not have.

National Candy Cane Day - December 26
NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY
National Candy Cane Day is observed across the United States each year on December 26.
In 1844, a recipe for a straight peppermint candy stick, which was white with colored stripes, was published. However, some stories tell of all white candy sticks in much earlier times.  There are folklore tales of the origin of the candy cane, yet there is no documented proof of its real beginning. It has been mentioned in literature since 1866 and was first known to be mentioned in association with Christmas in 1874.   As early as 1882, candy canes have been hung on Christmas trees.
Enjoy these fun candy cane facts:
  • The average candy cane is 5 inches tall.
  • While most candy canes are not sugar or calorie free, they do not have any fat or cholesterol.
  • Striped red and white candy canes were first introduced in 1900.
  • The first machine to make candy canes was invented in 1921 by Brasher O. Westerfield. Until then, they were made by hand.
  • Traditionally the flavor for candy canes is peppermint, but there are a variety of flavors.
  • Alain Roby, Geneva pastry chef, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest candy cane, measuring 51 feet long.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Buy some candy canes and use #NationalCandyCaneDay to post on social media.

National Thank You Note Day - December 26
NATIONAL THANK YOU NOTE DAY
National Thank You Note Day is recognized annually on December 26.  It is a day to get some note cards, paper, pen, envelopes and stamps to write special thank yous for the gifts you received.
Taking the time to thank family and friends with a personalized message has special meaning. The receiver of the "thank you" will enjoy getting the card in the mail and the message you have written.
Never underestimate the power of "THANK YOU!"
HOW TO OBSERVE
Writing a thank you has become a bit of lost art.  We have provided a few tips to help along the way.
Begin your thank you by acknowledging the specific gift and how thoughtful it is.  If the gift was delivered, then assure the sender it arrived safely and how much you enjoy it.
If the giver presented the gift personally, mention something you remember from your visit. Then thank them for the perfect gift they took the time to bring by describing it and how ideal it is for you.
Close your thank you by gushing about how kind the giver was for remembering you!
Within a few lines, you will have the knack of writing thank you cards on National Thank You Note Day.  Use #NationalThankYouNoteDay to post on social media.

Boxing Day - December 26
BOXING DAY
Boxing Day is an annual custom observed on December 26th.
The day after Christmas is traditionally the day for employers to give a gift, a Christmas box, to their employees. The holiday is a primarily British holiday and is celebrated across the world in current and past British held commonwealths.
Boxing day was renamed Day of Goodwill in 1994 in South Africa. The day also is known by Catholics as St. Stephen's Day. In Ireland, Boxing Day is celebrated along with the Day of the Wren. December 26 is considered Second Christmas in Germany, Poland, Netherlands and Scandinavia.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Use #BoxingDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
Boxing Day has been an official holiday in England, Wales, Ireland and Canada since 1871.
There are various explanations regarding the origins of Boxing Day. Some point to the song of "Good King Wenceslas" as the source of spirit, if not the day itself. According to the song, the 10th-century Duke looked out on his land on St. Stephen's Day (which is celebrated on December 26) and observed a poor peasant. He ordered food, wine and wood for fuel to be taken to the peasant and called for all Christian men to bless the poor in the same way.
In the Church of England, it was traditional during Advent for churches to display a donation box. After Christmas, the contents of the box were distributed among the poor.
Among the aristocrats, it was traditional to give boxed gifts to their servants and employees.
Most of the events on modern Boxing Day have little to do with the charity in the stories mentioned. Popular festivities include eating leftovers, soccer games, visiting and drinking.

12/27/16-  Paul Sanchez and John Rankin. Paul needs no introduction to anyone from New Orleans or half of the U.S., which incidentally, he has driven in the last two months. Glad to have him home for the Holidays-maybe we'll have a new song or two together by then!

Every Sunday, 11 AM to 2 PM, Superior Seafood, Napoleon and St. Charles Ave. (Closed Christmas Day)
The Superior Jazz Trio (Harry Hardin, Tim Paco, and John Rankin) continues, and I for one am quite happy to be there. I recommend the chargrilled oysters and the shrimp salad. And everthing else that I've tried there, but there's something about that shrimp salad...

City of New Orleans to Hold Abandoned Vehicle Auction

NEW ORLEANS - On Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will hold its fifth abandoned vehicle auction of 2016. The auction, located at Almonaster Auto Pound (10200 Almonaster Ave.), will begin at 9 a.m. Vehicle preview day and buyer registration is Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. No one will be admitted after 3:30 p.m. for security reasons.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 31 vehicle auctions, selling 3,055 abandoned cars and contributing over $2,060,198 to the City's General Fund.

As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which gets the buyer a notarized title at time of payment. Buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven that it saves the citizens time and streamlines their purchase.

The current auction will have 62 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods and can become junked harborages for rodents. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works has towed 13,263 vehicles in 2016 through Dec. 11, 2016.

Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue using its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.

All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on Thursday as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

Quick Facts
  • All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction website, www.brownsauction.com. Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
  • The current auction will be advertised on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016; Friday, Dec. 23, 2016; Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016.
  • Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.

Taste of Louisiana: Creole-Italian Lunch Demonstration
  • Next Class 29
  • Southern Food & Beverage Museum1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard New Orleans, LA, 70113 United States
Southern Food & Beverage Museum Founder and President, Liz Williams, is a New Orleans native with Sicilian roots. As a young girl, Liz learned not only the Sicilian culinary traditions, but the Creole twist on Sicilian food, now known as Creole Italian.
Join Liz and SoFAB's Director of Culinary Programming, Jyl Benson, every Thursday from 11 AM to 1 PM in the state-of-the-art Rouses Culinary Innovation Center by Jenn-Air for their new Creole Italian lunch demonstration and cooking class. The demonstration class offers an in-depth look into how to create delicious Creole Italian dishes that can be found nowhere else in the world, along with their cultural and historical traditions.
We provide the authentic recipes for you to take home, but in class we'll show you how to "cheat' and make them a little easier. Not only will you enjoy the lunch cooked right in front of you, but you'll also learn the fascinating history of the Sicilian people in New Orleans. Fun fact: At one time there were more Sicilians in New Orleans than in any other place (other than Palermo)!
The atmosphere for the class is relaxed, fun, and friendly, and guests are encouraged to seek advice on cooking, dining, and local interests from Liz and Jyl.
The $40 menu includes:
  • Italian Olive Salad with Fresh Lemon and Provolone
  • Creole Red Gravy with Sweet Italian Sausage and Pasta
  • Made to Order Snoballs
  • Garlic Bread
  • Iced Tea
Admission and a guided private tour of the Southern Food & Beverage Museum led by Liz Williams is included in the ticket price. If you have special dietary needs or questions, please contact Jyl Benson ( [email protected]) directly at least 48 hours in advance.
