NEW ORLEANS - AJ and Anna Tusa of the New Orleans Creole Cookery, one of the French Quarter's authentic Creole/ Cajun restaurants, has welcomed Chef Alex Patout as a partner in the New Orleans Creole Cookery.
"It is with great excitement that we announce the arrival of Chef Alex Patout to lead the kitchen of the New Orleans Creole Cookery," said AJ and Anna Tusa. "He needs no introduction to those plugged into the New Orleans culinary scene."
The New Orleans Creole Cookery is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the French Quarter, circa 1732. The epitome of old-world charm, the New Orleans Creole Cookery offers casual fine dining in three distinct settings including: a traditional, hidden French Quarter courtyard complete with a trickling fountain, a romantic yet rustic dining room and a lively oyster bar. New Orleans Creole Cookery is also considered by some to be one of the most haunted buildings in the French Quarter. "What better surroundings for Chef Patout to work his culinary magic and pay homage to New Orleans' romance with great Creole and Cajun cuisine?" added the Tusas.
Chef Patout and his wife Marcia ran Patout's Louisiana Restaurant in the French Quarter for 16 years. Chef Patout was consistently recognized as one of the top chefs in America. Since Katrina, their journeys have taken them to Miami, where they created the menu for a New Orleans-style restaurant, and then back to New Iberia. The Tusas convinced Chef Patout that he needed to be back in New Orleans.
Now the journey comes full-circle, as Chef Alex Patout brings his unique and innate understanding of Creole and Cajun cooking styles to the New Orleans Creole Cookery. Chef Patout says it's the perfect venue for his return to the city he loves.
"New Orleans Creole Cookery is a wonderful setting for the presentation of this ongoing evolution of cooking which has always fascinated me," says Chef Alex Patout. "AJ and Anna have a vision for a new direction for this special blending of Creole and Cajun cooking, a vision I share with them. This cooking is always changing and developing, not away from home-style, but embracing and venturing beyond it."
Patout brings a rich history of family culinary experience to his new position. He was born near Avery Island, the home of Tabasco Sauce in Cajun country. His family first settled the area in 1828, first trying to establish a vineyard and then moving into growing sugar cane. His grandmother owned the Hotel Frederic in the 1900s, where his father and uncle ran "Gene and Gerald's" restaurant.
Patout hadn't exactly planned for a life in the culinary arts. But after earning a college degree in accounting, Patout realized his heart was drawing him to his family's restaurant tradition. He opened his first restaurant in 1978 in New Iberia and began to attract national attention. In 1988 he moved to New Orleans, where he and his wife Marcia opened Alex Patout's Louisiana Restaurant in the French Quarter, on Royal Street across from the Monteleone Hotel.  The restaurant was a mainstay of the Quarter before Katrina forced its closure.
"We can't tell you how thrilled we are to be able to bring Chef Alex Patout to the New Orleans Creole Cookery," said AJ and Anna Tusa. "Those who remember Chef Patout's delicious creations have been hoping he would find his way home to us. Those who have not yet been introduced to his food are in for an incredible treat. Welcome back, Chef!"
New Orleans Creole Cookery is located at 508 Toulouse St.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at 9:00 a.m., the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works will hold its fourth abandoned vehicle auction of 2015. The auction, located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127. Vehicle preview day and buyer registration will be Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. No one will be admitted after 3:30 p.m. for security reasons.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 21 vehicle auctions, selling 2,408 abandoned cars and contributing over $1,680,254 to the City's General Fund.

As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which gets the buyer a notarized title at time of payment. This feature has been extremely well received by the public as the buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven that it saves the citizens time and streamlines their purchase.

The current auction will have 107 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods and can become junked harborages for rats and mosquitoes. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works towed 10,144 vehicles through July 31, 2015.

Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.

All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, La., is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on auction day, Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

Quick Facts
*             All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com. Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
*             The current auction will be advertised on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015.
*             Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.
 Purchasing a vehicle
*             Cash or cashier's check required
*             Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the buyer's $50 deposit is forfeited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.
*             A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which gives the buyer a notarized title to that vehicle
*             City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.

New Orleans Selected as One of Ten Cities Across the Nation
for First-Ever 'Resilience' AmeriCorps
Selection Comes Ahead of City's Resilience Strategy Launch
NEW ORLEANS - Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the City of New Orleans was selected as one of the 10 cities across the nation to pilot Resilience AmeriCorps - an effort to help vulnerable communities become more resilient to the effects of climate change. Building on President Obama's Climate Action Plan, the Administration, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, developed Resilience AmeriCorps in response to a recommendation made by the President's State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience to further commitments to building resilience in vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change - many of which are already facing economic or health-related challenges.
"We have battled more than our fair share of challenges over the last decade," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.  "This city defines what it means to be resilient, and it is an honor for New Orleans to participate in the President's first-ever Resilience AmeriCorps initiative. We have made great strides in the last decade since Hurricane Katrina, but there is much more work to be done.  We are thrilled to have these AmeriCorps members help us in our effort to achieve this goal."
"There is perhaps no more appropriate moment than the commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Katrina and New Orleans' subsequent recovery to place a priority on building resilience in our communities," said Dr. Judith Rodin, president of The Rockefeller Foundation. "Mayor Landrieu and his team serve as an example to other urban centers around the world that the only way the citizens and the City will continue to thrive is if strategic decisions and community involvement is seen through the frame of resilience planning and execution, and the Resilience AmeriCorps members who have the opportunity to serve here will gain invaluable knowledge of how to address the challenges facing communities across the country in the 21st Century."
As a result of the initiative, two AmeriCorps VISTA members will be provided to the City of New Orleans, as well as a $25,000 grant toward program implementation and technical assistance for City Hall. In partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, the members will also receive financial and technical support from The Rockefeller Foundation and operational expertise from the Cities of Service program. In addition, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will provide subject-matter expertise and counsel to New Orleans.
As one of the original cities chosen to partner with 100 Resilient Cities - pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation - the New Orleans' Resilience AmeriCorps members will play a key role in the implementation and execution of its Resilience Strategy, which will be unveiled tomorrow during the week-long commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Katrina. Given there is a strong correlation between geographic vulnerability and physical shocks in New Orleans, the City will deploy these AmeriCorps members in neighborhoods with both high environmental risks and high percentages of poverty to execute initiatives. The members will also engage the public in important discussions and will coordinate necessary volunteer efforts in order to achieve maximum impact.
This is not the first time the City will employ a large volunteer network. Over the past five years, Mayor Landrieu has engaged nearly 5,000 volunteers in programs such as NOLA FOR LIFE and Fight the Blight geared toward impact volunteering with the end goal of increasing social cohesion.

Mayor Landrieu and the City of New Orleans to Host President Obama, Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to Commemorate 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and Showcase City's Resilience

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Landrieu and the City of New Orleans will welcome President Barack Obama and former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton as they visit New Orleans to commemorate the10th  Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and showcase the city's resilience. During the week-long examination of the decade since the devastating hurricane made landfall and the federal levees failed, President Obama, President Bush, President Clinton, Members of Congress, federal officials and other dignitaries will conduct site visits, participate in events and conversations with community members that honor the lives of those lost, explores the city's progress and resilience planning, and examines the challenges the city is focused on tackling in years to come.

The While House announced earlier this week that on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, the President will travel to New Orleans to meet with Mayor Landrieu and residents, young and old, from several neighborhoods who have rebuilt their lives over the past 10 years. While in the city, the President will deliver remarks on the region's rebirth and what's possible when residents and city and corporate leaders work together to lift up their communities and build back in more resilient and innovative ways, better positioning the city for economic growth. The President will be joined by Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate who has helped spearhead and coordinate many of the Administration's efforts and his all-of-nation approach over the past six and a half years. Fugate will also take part in the unveiling of the City's resilience strategy, earlier in the week.

George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, will visit New Orleans on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, with former First Lady Laura Bush. President and Mrs. Bush will return to Warren Easton Charter School, which benefited from the Gulf Coast School Library Recovery Initiative, a special fund of the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries established to help Gulf Coast schools that were damaged by the hurricanes to rebuild their book and material collections. At an education round table, President and Mrs. Bush will honor the exceptional work accomplished by New Orleans school leaders, non profit partners, educators, parents and communities. President Bush will also deliver remarks. As part of his Administration's extensive recovery efforts,  President Bush also tapped former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush to lead the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, which raised more than $130 million in contributions for hurricane response and long-term recovery efforts.

President Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States and founder of the Clinton Foundation, will visit New Orleans on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, for the Power of Community gathering - the city's signature commemorative event, held on the official anniversary of Katrina's landfall that will demonstrate New Orleans' resilience. President Clinton will join Mayor Landrieu and New Orleans residents, community leaders, and advocates who, over the last ten years, have helped the city recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the federal levees. In addition to remarks from President Clinton and Mayor Landrieu, the event will feature music and cultural performances as well as faith leaders representing several religious denominations who will pray for the city to continue to unite, heal, and move forward.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, President Clinton joined forces with President George H.W. Bush to establish the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, which raised over $130 million in contributions to support relief and long-term recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast. Additionally, Clinton has leveraged public and private sector commitments through the Clinton Global Initiative to drive investments in community development, disaster preparedness, education, housing, infrastructure, resilience and sustainability.

In the days leading up to Aug. 29, the City will also host delegations from other countries, senior leadership from the United States Congress, various Cabinet officials and numerous other dignitaries who will participate in various events.

Following one of the most devastating manmade and natural disasters in the nation's history, the Louisiana coastline is more vulnerable than ever before. Battered by years of hurricanes, weakened by the 2010 Oil Spill, and deprived of natural resources by the historic levee system, Louisiana currently loses a football field of land every hour. Yet, from this crisis comes great opportunity and the state today is leading the world in proactive coastal restoration and protection measures, advancing internationally unprecedented solutions to a daunting environmental challenge.
To truly illustrate the breadth of the crisis and enormity of solutions, Greater New Orleans, Inc. (GNO, Inc.), the economic development alliance for the 10-parish region, will be hosting a series of coastal flyovers for the media from August 25th-28th at the Belle Chasse Southern Sea Plane facility. In addition to the guided flight featuring advanced protection and restoration projects, we'll have a briefing with local coastal experts before the flight and a full discussion / Q&A following the 1.5 hour flyover. In 1899, the Sewerage and Water Board was created by the Louisiana Legislature to furnish, construct, operate and maintain a water distribution system and a sanitary sewer system for the citizen of New Orleans. In 1903, the agency was merged with the New Orleans Drainage Commission for cost effective operations.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage to Board facilities. In the ten years post-Katrina the agency has been working diligently to restore its facilities and systems to pre-Katrina condition.

While the anniversary of Katrina is a time for mourning for what St. Bernard Parish  lost, Bayham said, it's also an open house for the parish. It is an opportunity to show the world that St. Bernard Parish is back, he said, its flood protection is stronger and its public facilities and infrastructure are vastly improved, and that St. Bernard is a safe and great place to live and raise a family.

Levees .org

WHAT: Historic plaque unveiling ceremony
WHO: Levees.org in partnership with the residents of the Lower Ninth Ward
WHERE: T-intersection of Jourdan Avenue and N. Johnson Street, New Orleans
WHEN: Monday, August 24, 6:00 p.m.

Today at 6:00 p.m. Levees.org will host an unveiling ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the worst civil engineering disaster in U.S. history.

The residents of the Lower Ninth Ward and Levees.org will unveil a historic plaque that is both a commemoration of a pivotal moment in history and a memorial to those lost.

The unveiling ceremony which is open to everyone, will feature local artists including poet Chuck Perkins and Al "Carnival Time" Johnson. A large tent will provide shade and rain cover.

The failure of the canal wall during Hurricane Katrina nearly decimated this historic primarily African-American neighborhood of homeowners.

This will be Levees.org's third sponsored historic plaque. In 2010, the group installed a plaque at the 17th Street Canal breach site in Lakeview, and in 2011, the east side breach of the London Avenue Canal in Gentilly.

Please join us!

with author
Ellen Urbani
celebrating her new novel
LANDFALL

Two mothers and their teenage daughters, whose lives collide in a fatal car crash, take turns narrating Ellen Urbani's breathtaking novel, Landfall, set in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Eighteen-year-olds Rose and Rosebud have never met but they share a birth year, a name, and a bloody pair of sneakers. Rose's quest to atone for the accident that kills Rosebud, a young woman so much like herself but for the color of her skin, unfolds alongside Rosebud's battle to survive the devastating flooding in the Lower Ninth Ward and to find help for her unstable mother. These unforgettable characters give voice to the dead of the storm and, in a stunning twist, demonstrate how what we think we know can make us blind to what matters most.

ELLEN URBANI is the author of Landfall, a work of contemporary historical fiction, and the memoir When I Was Elena (2006, The Permanent Press; a BookSense Notable selection). Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and numerous anthologies, and has been widely excerpted. She has reviewed books for The Oregonian, served as a federal disaster/trauma specialist, and has lectured nationally on this topic.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

While more than 15,500 animals were rescued during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it's estimated that 88,700 pets remained unaccounted for, according to the Louisiana Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. No one knows exactly how many animals died but most estimates put the number between 50,000 to 70,000 across the entire Gulf Coast.
In August, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will honor these animals with a community art display that gives back.  In observance of the 10th anniversary of Katrina, the Louisiana SPCA is asking New Orleans residents  to donate $10 toward in-need pets in the community. With every $10 donation, donors will be ableto hang a collar on the community art display. Each collar that is purchased will remain on display until after the grand opening of the Louisiana SPCA's expansion, the Adoption, Resource Center and Clinic, Aug. 21-23. After the grand opening, all of the donated collars honoring the animals affected by Katrina will be donated to pets-in-need around the Greater New Orleans area. The funds raised from the purchase of the collars will be used to microchip the thousands of animals that come to the Louisiana SPCA every year.

2015 is the Spay/Neuter Year!
There is still time to take advantage of the amazing deal we're offering to New Orleans pet owners. All year long, Orleans Parish residents can bring their pets to the Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic and receive their spay/neuter surgery for only $20.15! We're also offering $10 microchips with any spay/neuter surgery or wellness visit. Not an Orleans Parish resident? We have a variety of voucher programs that can reduce your spay/neuter costs! 2015 is the perfect year to make sure your pet is enjoying the benefits of being spayed or neutered.

Release of the City of New Orleans Resilience Strategy
Ashe PowerHouse Theater
1731 Baronne Street

For almost three centuries, New Orleans has faced many challenges. With our culture of creativity and innovation, the city has emerged stronger and more resilient each time. Today, there are new challenges that confront the region - climate change and rising sea levels, land subsidence and coastal erosion, and lack of equity and opportunity for all New Orleanians to grow and thrive. As part of 100 Resilient Cities, powered by the Rockefeller Foundation, the City of New Orleans will release its first ever Resilience Strategy, with an aim of becoming a global leader in urban resilience. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate will also be in attendance.

Champagne Education Series Class 4 - August 27th with Dr. Michael Knisley
We've had quite a journey through Champagne these last 3 months with Dr. Michael Knisley and we're sad but excited to hold the last class, The Unicorns and Curiosities.  Tonight, we'll try wine made with the 4 other allowed "heritage" grapes in the region, styles of varying sweetness, still wines made from Champagne grapes, and other fun and delicious examples of what is possible from Champagne. By the time this is done, you will be a Champagne expert and understand why some of the best producers live by the philosophy, "Wine first, bubbles after." We have 9 spots remaining for his class on Thursday, August 27th at 6:30pm, the cost is $45 and you can find more information here: Champagne Education Class 4

Salon by Sucré is excited to announce details about Cicchetti - a special Italian-style happy hour that the recently-opened French Quarter restaurant is now offering on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm.

In Italy, Cicchetti  refers to small, complimentary snacks or side dishes displayed on the bar in the early evening while guests sip on cocktails. Drawing on this inspiration, Salon is offering a variety of bruschetta and other small snacks free of charge along with $5 drink specials on classic New Orleans cocktails like Sazeracs, Death in the Afternoon, and Tennessee Williams. Cicchetti  is available at Salon every Thursday from 4pm - 7pm.

Salon is the culmination of Sucré's beautiful approach to haute cuisine and its passion for exceptional service and presentation. It blends the formality of New Orleans service with the globally-inspired cuisine of Tariq Hanna in a casual dining room. Hanna's menu draws from a variety of influences, including his Middle Eastern heritage, childhood in West Africa and time spent in Great Britain. Beth McCaskey, an 18 year veteran of NYC's Union Square Café, heads up the bar program, offering several classics, new creations, and an entire tea cocktail program based on Salon's impressive afternoon tea service.

Salon by Sucré is located at 622 Conti Street in New Orleans. For reservations call 504-267-7098 and for more information visit www.shopsucre.com/store-locations
