Large call center for veterans to open in Jefferson

State officials say an Arizona-based health-care company has picked Jefferson Parish as the location for a multi-regional call center for its work contacting veterans in need of care.

The Jindal administration announced Monday that TriWest Healthcare Alliance will open the center by November. The company's work is through the Veterans Choice Program of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

State officials say the new center will employ 285 people and pay on average $35,700 a year.

TriWest, based in Phoenix, is owned by not-for-profit health plans and two university hospital systems. The company serves military service members, veterans and their families.

State officials say TriWest chose the New Orleans area over eight other major metro areas. The center will serve veterans in three regions spanning 28 states.

FRESH & LOCAL
After a few nice days of fall-like weather it's starting to warm up again and feel like the end of summer we know all too well. With the heat and sparse rain comes a more limited selection of produce and vendors around markets. But fear not! Fall is indeed coming. We even saw our first bunch of mustard greens at market last Tuesday, as sure a sign as any that the seasons will be changing soon. Keep coming out and supporting our fishing families, bakers, dairy farmers and the produce-hauling family farmers at market with late summer produce. We can expect to see more and more variety and bounty as the weeks begin to cool down.

PICK OF THE WEEK:
MARKETEERS!
Are you ready for another scavenger hunt? We'll be searching high, looking low, and turning the market over to find the items on this month's Marketeer scavenger hunt. Come on out and bring your parents with you!
CALLING ALL BREAD BAKERS!
We're still looking for a few good bread bakers! If you or someone you know is making delicious bread and looking to become a vendor at our markets, please refer to the vendor interest form on our website and drop us a line! We'll be taking applications for the next couple of weeks. Happy baking! And while we're on the subject, check out this write-up our very own Graison Gill of Bellegarde Bakery got in Yahoo Food last week.
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL
We're excited to have Chef Matthew Kopfler of the popular New Orleans pop-up L'enfant Terrible join us this month as our GPS vendors for the month of September! If you frequent markets then you've more than likely seen Chef Matthew picking up fresh veggies for his dinner menus. When you come out to market expect simple, fresh, and well crafted plates highlighting the best of what that day's market has to offer. Fresh is the keyword. Be sure to stop by and grab a plate with Chef Matthew this Tuesday and be sure to stop by L'enfant Terrible at Molly's on Decatur for dinner if you like what you taste!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Plenty of tomatoes at market right now. Why not try your hand at a decadent Tomato Blue Cheese Napoleon recipe courtesy of Dickie Brennan himself this week?
Tomato Blue Cheese Napoleon

Since the time of Napoleon Bonaparte, New Orleanians have never tired of all things Napoleonic. After Napoleon's final defeat, many of his soldiers deserted the French army and took exile in the very Francophile city of New Orleans, where a movement began to petition the French government to send Napoleon to Louisiana. We never got the little dictator, but he lives on in countless dishes bearing his name.

Dickie Brennan himself is credited with creating this favorite starter that has been a popular way to begin a meal at his steak house since its opening in 1998. His version of remoulade sauce is very unusual in that it's not as fiery as the versions at other restaurants. Its creaminess reminds me of my great-grandmother's homemade Thousand Island dressing.

Ingredients

Remoulade Sauce
4 green onions, chopped
3 sprigs parsley, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
2 eggs
1/2 yellow onion
1/4 lemon, seeds removed
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup Creole mustard
1/4 cup prepared horseradish
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon Crystal hot sauce
1-2 cloves of garlic
salt
3/4 cup vegetable oil

1 head green leaf lettuce, julienned
1/4 cup cane vinegar
Salt and pepper
2 tomatoes, each cut into four slices
16 ounces blue cheese
1-1/2 cups remoulade sauce
1 red onion, shaved (for garnish)
Garlic crostinis (for garnish)

Directions

To prepare Remoulade Sauce: Combine all ingredients except vegetable oil in food processor bowl. Process until mixture is smooth. With the processor running, slowly add oil until emulsified. Adjust seasoning and set aside.

To assemble Napoleon: Combine julienned lettuce and cane vinegar in a bowl; toss to mix. Season with salt and pepper. Divide lettuce equally among four salad plates. Top each with one slice of tomato; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place two ounces of cheese on each tomato slice, then top with another tomato slice. Drizzle with a generous 1/3 cup of the remoulade sauce, then top with remaining blue cheese. Garnish with shaved red onion and garlic crostinis.

Serves 4

SILENT SOULS: Katrina's Animals
NEW ORLEANS, LA- Silent Souls:Katrina's Animals, is an exhibition of images captured by Washington Post photojournalist Carol Guzy, a four time Pulitzer Prize Winner. . The works will be on view through the month of September with proceeds benefiting Humane Society of Louisiana's N.O. Place Like Home campaign.

The event seeks to celebrate the exhausting labors and sacrifices made by disaster responders and local animal rescuers alike and to help foster continued recovery and development of one of Louisiana's effective animal protection and rescue agencies.

Our exciting series continues next week with guest Sommelier Brian Fuller!  Brian loves the bold, international style wines coming from Spain's Priorato appellation and tonight will present a highly rated red and white from the region. White wines are hard to come by in Priorato and there are only 650 cases produced Garnatxa Blanca and Pedro Ximenez blend (91 pts. by Robert Parker).  This should be an amazing event and if this fabulous weather holds we'll be on the patio tonight! 2 tickets remaining!! You can reserve here - The Somm's Pick September

The Oak Tree by Steven Spires

The Oak Tree is a children's picture book that focuses on love and family in the midst of a storm. As an immense storm approaches, a family prepares to evacuate leaving behind their home and an old oak tree. The tree endures the hardships of the storm alone, clinging to hopeful thoughts of the family's safe return. After weeks of despair, the family returns to their damaged home and rebuilds next to their old weathered oak tree. Spires began his professional career in 2013 when Three Little Shrimp, a children's picture book, was published.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of V-J Day
Wednesday, September 2
10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center
Though the fighting had ceased some three weeks earlier, September 2, 1945, was officially the day to celebrate the end of World War II. Crewmembers crowded the decks of the USS Missouri as the Japanese officially signed the formal surrender documents. The gruesome, exhausting, brutal war was officially over, three and a half years after the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor.

The Museum will commemorate this important WWII anniversary with speakers and archival footage reflecting on the meaning and legacy of Victory over Japan.
Programming
10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.    USMC New Orleans Brass Quintet Performance
11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.    V-J Day Ceremony
Ceremony commemorating the end of the war in Japan. Museum president and CEO Gordon H. "Nick" Mueller, PhD, will discuss the meaning and legacy of the Allied victory over Japan as well as America's place in the postwar world. Australian Ambassador Kim Beazley will join us to discuss the end of the war from another Allied perspective for this historic anniversary.

The Financial Peace University project is hosting an Educators focus group to look at the best ways to get personal finance education into the classrooms in New Orleans. We are developing a project with the goal to give high school and junior high students the skills that they need to manage money before they go to college and get lost in student loan debt.

Please come out on Wednesday September 2 from 5:30 to 7pm at the YLC building (1840 Euterpe St.) and give us your feedback as we bounce some ideas off you in a very informal setting.

Dinner, Wine and Beer will be there to take care of your hunger and thirst, and we will be doing a drawing for some door prizes as well! Come meet some other young professionals that are in your city and let's put our heads together to give the kids of New Orleans a better future!

If you have any questions please email John-Michael Johnson at [email protected]

Salon by Sucré is excited to announce details about Cicchetti - a special Italian-style happy hour that the recently-opened French Quarter restaurant is now offering on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm.

In Italy, Cicchetti  refers to small, complimentary snacks or side dishes displayed on the bar in the early evening while guests sip on cocktails. Drawing on this inspiration, Salon is offering a variety of bruschetta and other small snacks free of charge along with $5 drink specials on classic New Orleans cocktails like Sazeracs, Death in the Afternoon, and Tennessee Williams. Cicchetti  is available at Salon every Thursday from 4pm - 7pm.

Salon is the culmination of Sucré's beautiful approach to haute cuisine and its passion for exceptional service and presentation. It blends the formality of New Orleans service with the globally-inspired cuisine of Tariq Hanna in a casual dining room. Hanna's menu draws from a variety of influences, including his Middle Eastern heritage, childhood in West Africa and time spent in Great Britain. Beth McCaskey, an 18 year veteran of NYC's Union Square Café, heads up the bar program, offering several classics, new creations, and an entire tea cocktail program based on Salon's impressive afternoon tea service.

Salon by Sucré is located at 622 Conti Street in New Orleans. For reservations call 504-267-7098 and for more information visit www.shopsucre.com/store-locations

The festival will take place from Oct. 14 - 22, and marks the first year the NOFF is an Oscar-qualifying festival in the category of documentary shorts. Seven of the 24 films in the competition will have their world premiere at the festival, which will screen more than 170 movies total.

"The sustained growth of the festival demonstrates that Louisiana is an established hub of the entertainment industry," says New Orleans Film Society Executive Director Jolene Pinder, "and the New Orleans Film Festival serves as a barometer for what's happening in the state."

Here is a list of the movies that were selected for competition out of 3,4000 submissions, including descriptions of the films provided by the New Orleans Film Society.
