"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life"
- Pablo Picassoow was your summer? I hope it was filled with great adventures and time to relax too.

While working in the studio recently I felt an enormous wave of inspiration! A "zing!"
New explorations, new paintings, new drawings were born! It came about by showing up and moving my hands. I noticed that when making artwork, I feel the most like "me."
It was great to be reminded how deeply nourishing and important creativity is for all of us.

With that in mind, I have a short video for you, it's called "My Creative Wish for YOU"
All my best,

Melinda Rose: Of The Rising Tide: A Photo Essay of the Vanishing Bayou Community of Isle de Jean Charles
Tuesday, September 15th
6-7:30PM

Somewhere...down in the forgotten reaches of the Louisiana marshes, a community clings tenaciously to what remains of its homeland. Isle de Jean Charles, is a fragile, finger-like Island, attached to the mainland by a narrow 2 mile-long road. A good steady wind could leave you trapped on the Island for days.

Enter the hurricanes...vicious storms with sweet sounding names like Katrina and Rita swallow up this Island again and again, each time ripping up more lives and eroding away more of the Island's land mass. "Oh we're use to hurricanes alright," says Chris Brunet, who is raising his orphaned niece and nephew from a wheel chair. "But since the '50s, our barrier Islands have been eroding away...and now the salt water rushes right in and kills just about everything."

Chris is one of 40 remaining Islanders, all descendants of the Choctaw- Chitimacha Indian tribes. These Native Americans have inhabited a once-thriving gulf community for more than a Century. The elders share stories of a once-lush prairie land textured with a variety of trees, including fig, pecan and persimmons. Today the horizon is left to tend the hauntingly beautiful remains of mighty oaks and bald cypress, their lonely bleached-out bones rising defiantly out of the soggy marshes.

The people of this battered and broken Island are living on borrowed time. And, as if they haven't suffered enough, the massive BP oil disaster managed to strip all of the Island's commercial fishermen of the only livelihood they've ever known.

Yet, somehow, these gritty and determined people of Isle de Jean Charles continue to live out their lives. The children frolic and play on the new levee. The men take their boats out on the Gulf. Families of three generations come together on a swelteringly hot Sunday afternoon. And life goes on...for now.
This book is available in paperback ($14.95).

Please join us for a reading & signing with Tom Piazza, author of WHY NEW ORLEANS MATTERS, celebrating the release of his new novel, A FREE STATE.
"A Free State has great kinetic energy, a gripping central narrative, and a host of indelible characters. And, in the current age of identity politics, it speaks to the prevailing cultural obsession with 'authenticity' by exposing the fragility of that very notion. A hugely rewarding novel."  -Monica Ali, author of Brick Lane
A FREE STATE is both a riveting chase novel and a searing parable of liberty and its costs

Broadway in New Orleans' 2015-16 season opens with Theatre Under the Stars' production of the musical based on the 1989 Disney film and Hans Christian Anderson's classic story. Ariel is a mermaid who dreams to be part of the landed world, and she makes a deal with evil sea witch Ursula, who uses magic to make Ariel a human - with one catch: Ariel sacrifices her voice for the transformation. The show features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, with additional lyrics by Glenn Slater. The musical's book is by Doug Wright. Songs include "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Kiss the Girl," and more.

Great Books Discussion Group - Emma by Jane Austen
A/V Conference Room, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie
Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.

Pickled Yellow Squash
Makes 3 cups squash (strained)
2 pounds small yellow squash
1 sweet onion, preferably Vidalia
1 small red bell pepper
1/4 cup kosher salt
2 1/2 cups cider vinegar
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon ground mustard
Slice squash into very thin rounds. Remove both onion ends, peel, and cut in half lengthwise. Slice 1/2 of the onion into very thin strips, reserving the other half for another use. Seed and finely dice the bell pepper.
Toss squash, onions, peppers, and salt together in a mixing bowl. Add a handful of ice cubes and just enough cold water to cover. Stir well to combine, and set aside for thirty minutes.
Rinse the vegetables well and place in a colander or sieve to drain. Meanwhile bring the vinegar, sugar, and ground mustard to a boil in a small saucepan. Immediately remove from heat, stirring to make sure the ingredients are dissolved, and allow the vinegar to cool for 3-5 minutes.
Gently pat vegetables dry with a towel and place in an airtight container. Pour vinegar over the mixture, tossing a fork to make sure all the slices get soaked. Cover and refrigerate until cool. Strain from brine before serving.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Antonio Molesini and the Wines of Southern Italy, Thursday September 17th
2 Tickets Remaining!  Wines from southern Italy have historically been overlooked in favor of the better-known and popular wine regions of northern Italy - mainly Tuscany, Piedmont and the Veneto. However, southern Italy has a rich winemaking heritage and is considered the birthplace of Italian wines. With its warm Mediterranean climate, rich volcanic soil and abundance of ancient native grape varieties, vineyards have dotted southern Italy's landscape for thousands of years and its wines were much prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Join Antonio Molesini for this seated tasting of southern Italy's lesser known regions of Sardinia, Molise, Basilicata, Calabria, Puglia and Sicily.  Casey Foote, our resident cheese monger, will also present some of our favorite southern Italian cheeses to pair with the wines. $25 Reservations required and you can do so here:   Southern Italy
Friday Free for All with Liz Dowty and wines from Eric Solomon Imports, Friday September 18, 6-8pm   Our ever popular Friday Free For All will be hosted by sommelier Liz Dowty pouring new French and Spanish wines from importer Eric Solomon.  This tasting is free and no reservations are required.
Barone Pizzini Franciacorta Tasting with Winemaker Silvano Brescianini, Thursday September 24th  Franciacorta, Italy's closest rival to Champagne, is generally regarded as Italy's finest sparkling wine. One of the oldest, high-quality wineries in the region is Barone Pizzini, the first winery in Franciacorta to adopt organic viticulture methods and subsequently biodynamic practices. The estate spans 25 vineyards across 47 hectares and is planted primarily to Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, as is common in Franciacorta. In 2012, their Franciacorta rose was called the "best organic wine in the world" by the International Wine Challenge. This year they won special recognition from Gambero Rosso for sustainable agriculture.  Winemaker and managing partner Silvano Brescianini will join us on September 24th to launch these very special wines to the New Orleans market.  We'll taste the entire lineup, 5 wines ranging in price from $36 - $60.  $32 Reservations are required and you can do so here:  Barone Pizzini

David I. KertzerJoin us as David I. Kertzer, PhD, presents The Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe, the gripping story of Pope Pius XI's secret dealings with Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. This groundbreaking work, based on seven years of research in fascist collections and Vatican archives, including reports from Mussolini's spies inside the highest levels of the Church, forever changed our understanding of the Vatican's role in the rise of Fascism in Europe.

In a challenge to the conventional history of this period, in which a heroic Church does battle with the Fascist regime, Kertzer shows how Pius XI played a crucial role in making Mussolini's dictatorship possible and keeping him in power. Stop by the Museum on September 17 to hear a lecture on the book from Kertzer at 6:00 p.m., preceded by a reception at 5:00 p.m. and a Q&A session afterward at 7:00 p.m.

WWOZ-FM KICKS OFF 2015-16 SEASON
OF YOUTH SHOWCASE "CUTTIN' CLASS"
Featuring Edna Carr HS Thursday September 17 - Live on WWOZ at 12 noon
Community-supported, volunteer powered public radio station WWOZ-FM is proud to kick off
the new season of Cuttin' Class, a program dedicated to shining the spotlight on high school
brass bands in the Greater New Orleans area. Broadcasting live from WWOZ's French Quarter
studios, a different high school is featured on the Thursday New Orleans Music Show on a nearmonthly
basis during the school year. From noon until 12:30, each band plays three songs
interspersed with interviews with the schools' band directors and the students themselves.
"WWOZ felt it was important to reach out to the schools and include them in our
programming," explains Nita Ketner, co-producer of Cuttin' Class and host of the Thursday New
Orleans Music Show. "After all, our high school band departments nurture the future generations
of New Orleans musicians that will carry on our musical and cultural traditions. We also want to
highlight the band directors who are among our city's numerous unsung heroes. Through
teaching their students the discipline, commitment, focus, and teamwork it takes to be part of a
successful, dynamic band, they are giving our kids skills they will use throughout their lifetimes,
even if they pursue careers outside of music."
"It was a really tremendous opportunity for my students, and something they will never forget,"
said Andy Bower, the band director for Dolores T. Aaron Academy, whose school participated in
the 2014-15 school year. "Almost the entire 6-8th grades tuned in from their classrooms, and
everyone was blown away-WWOZ and the drumline are the talk of the school!"
The Fall 2015 Cuttin' Class lineup:
* September 17th: Edna Karr High School (Band Director, Christopher Herrero)
* October 15th: Warren Easton Charter High School (Band Director, Asia Muhaimin)
* November 12th: Trombone Shorty Music Academy (Band Director, Erion Williams)
* December 17th: KIPP - Central City Academy (Band Director, Joshua Speight)

Everyone loves a hot mess. Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Honey Boo Boo, Heidi and Spencer Pratt, The Real Housewives of [insert city here]. We watch them out of admiration, out of fascination, and - let's be honest - out of a hidden desire to see them fall from grace. The eighteenth-century version of the reality star was Marie Antoinette. Adore her, admonish her, despise her or behead her, the one thing you couldn't do was ignore her. In David Adjmi's hot new play, the queen that everyone has an opinion of is finally given her own voice, and you might be surprised by what comes out. Marie Antoinette has played Yale Rep, SOHO Rep, A.R.T. and Steppenwolf Theatre, and we are thrilled to present this regional premiere to a city that knows a thing or two about French royalty. Three-time Big Easy Award-winning director Mark Routhier (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Balm in Gilead) will direct and Big Easy Entertainer of the Year Cecile Monteyne will star as the controversial queen.
"MARIE ANTOINETTE": 8 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, through Sept. 20, Nims Black Box Theatre, NOCCA, 2800 Chartres St., New Orleans. Regional premiere of the play about the French royal who was the reality star of her day. Pre-show dinner available at Press Street Station. $20 and up. (504) 302-9117. nolaproject.com

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Walking to New Orleans
When: Thursdays-Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31
The show dramatizes the work of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew at Carver Theater. The musical show featuring Al "Lil Fats" Jackson and Shamarr Allen dramatizes the musical collaboration of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, who produced a string of R&B hits in the 1950s. At 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Carver Theater.

Salon by Sucré is excited to announce details about Cicchetti - a special Italian-style happy hour that the recently-opened French Quarter restaurant is now offering on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm.

In Italy, Cicchetti  refers to small, complimentary snacks or side dishes displayed on the bar in the early evening while guests sip on cocktails. Drawing on this inspiration, Salon is offering a variety of bruschetta and other small snacks free of charge along with $5 drink specials on classic New Orleans cocktails like Sazeracs, Death in the Afternoon, and Tennessee Williams. Cicchetti  is available at Salon every Thursday from 4pm - 7pm.

Salon is the culmination of Sucré's beautiful approach to haute cuisine and its passion for exceptional service and presentation. It blends the formality of New Orleans service with the globally-inspired cuisine of Tariq Hanna in a casual dining room. Hanna's menu draws from a variety of influences, including his Middle Eastern heritage, childhood in West Africa and time spent in Great Britain. Beth McCaskey, an 18 year veteran of NYC's Union Square Café, heads up the bar program, offering several classics, new creations, and an entire tea cocktail program based on Salon's impressive afternoon tea service.

Salon by Sucré is located at 622 Conti Street in New Orleans. For reservations call 504-267-7098 and for more information visit www.shopsucre.com/store-locations

Rivertown Theaters Opens Its Most Ambitious Season Yet with
The Broadway Phenomenon, Tony Awards Record-breaking
Madcap of a Musical, "THE PRODUCERS"

New Orleans' favorite funniest man, Ricky Graham, will be directing a dynamic duo and two of the most respected actors in the city, Sean Paterson and Gary Rucker, starring in the title roles of the zany, irreverent musical and season opener, "The Producers," at Rivertown Theaters running September 11 - 27, 2015.

Based on the Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers is the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. Together, they hatch the ultimate scam: Raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway fiasco...and pocket the difference. With the help of showgirls, dancing grandmas, and a cast of hilarious stereotypes, their plan goes mistakenly "right". The Producers has become a Broadway phenomenon, turning the tradition of a Broadway musical on its head and earning more Tony Awards than any other show in the history of the Great White Way. With tunes and a book by superstar comedian Mel Brooks and co-book writer Thomas Meehan (Hairspray), this big-time musical is truly one of the funniest shows around. Because of the adult language, the show is recommended for ages 15 & up.

HousingNOLA  is the result of New Orleanians coming together to create a visionary document that reflects upon housing in the past, analyzes our present state of housing, and recommends strategies for making better housing-policy decisions in the future. If Katrina taught us anything, it's that local wisdom and the resiliency of its people are this city's greatest resources. The Plan is divided into two distinct reports: the release of the Preliminary Report in August 2015, and the final HousingNOLA Plan scheduled for release in November 2015.

Preliminary Report Highlights
There is a demand for approximately 33,600 units (new construction and rehab) over the next 10 years in New Orleans.
  • If homeownership and rental levels remain constant over the next 10 years, there will be an even split between new homeownership units (16,921) and rental units (16,672) needed.
  • Highest homeowner/buyer demand will be families earning between $29,717 and $44,575 and over $44,575  for 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom units.
  • Highest renter demand will be families earning less than $11,143 and over $37,146, for 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom units.
  • "Fair market rent" in New Orleans for a 1 bedroom apartment is $767 monthly or $9,204 yearly.
  • Median income in New Orleans is $37,146; median rent is $765; average home value is $183,700.
  • African American households disproportionately pay more of their income towards housing costs.
  • More than 70% of all households pa y more than one third or more of their income towards housing costs.
  • Between 2005 and 2015, the number of Housing Choice Vouchers given out by HANO has more than doubled.

Operation Manna/Chowhound

Friday, September 25
5:00 p.m. Reception  |  6:00 p.m. Presentation  |  7:30 p.m. Q&A
US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center
Operation Manna/Chowhound was a massive air campaign to deliver food to starving Dutch civilians in the closing days of World War II. As the war raged and Nazi-occupied western Holland descended into chaos, heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force ("Manna") and the US Eighth Air Force ("Chowhound") flew dangerous low-level missions to deliver tons of food parcels in designated drop zones.
The National WWII Museum is delighted and honored that the 100th Bomb Group Foundation has selected New Orleans as the host city for its 2015 reunion. Many veterans from the reunion will attend this incredible program at the Museum.
