Plans are in the works to create a more defined arts and entertainment coordinator in Old Arabi as well as encourage a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented neighborhood along the Mississippi River. The effort comes from St. Bernard Parish's first-ever comprehensive master plan adopted last year.
The proposal has met questions and concerns in community meetings, but a special planning commission meeting is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 8) to provide a recap on the proposal, present some recent changes and clarifications, and continue to solicit suggestions from the public.
The hearing will be held in the Council Chambers, 8201 W. Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette.
The parish's Director of Community Development Jason Stopa said promoting an arts, culture and entertainment district in Old Arabi, mainly within the St. Claude Avenue corridor, would basically place the same standards as exist along the revitalizing section of St. Claude in the St. Roch, Marigny and Bywater area.
"It would encourage live music, arts, theater, and would allow bars with certain conditional uses requiring specific design standards," Stopa said. "It would prevent new automotive type businesses, like tire shops."
The proposed overlay also would prevent business such as check cashing, gambling and pawnshops. Along a stretch of Mehle and Fiscoville avenues, it would allow small neighborhood businesses in residential zones, such as bakeries, bookstores and coffee shops, according to the proposal.
Along the riverfront, the goal is to prevent future industrial development in an effort to encourage commercial, mixed-use buildings.
"Currently, since those riverfront properties are zoned industrial, and so people who want to build condominiums that can take advantage of the views of the river, with retail establishments on the bottom, are on the fence as they worry that someone could build a cement batching plant, or some similar industrial project, right next door," Stopa said. "The proposed overlay would prevent that."

Cocktail bucket lists can (and should) be done

DID YOU KNOW?

New Orleans is home to 11 sculptures by renowned stone carver Teodoro Francesco Bottinelli, a first generation Italian immigrant.

Bottinelli was born on December 13, 1886 in Brenno-Useria, a small town in Northern Italy. Like most of the men in his family, Bottinelli apprenticed as a stone carver as a young boy. With little hope for professional advancement in Italy, Bottinelli immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island at the age of eighteen. He quickly found employment carving various sculptures and statues across the country. While Bottinelli was being trained to carve stone in Italy he typically worked with marble, however, once he arrived in the United States Bottinelli was forced to work with granite, a harder stone that proved much more difficult to carve. Bottinelli was able to master this new medium and established a strong reputation for his talents.
Bottinelli settled with his family in New Orleans in 1927, the same year he would begin work on Stone Mountain under Augustus Lukeman. Some other well known projects Bottinelli was involved in include: the eagle carvings for the Arlington Memorial Bridge, the baptismal altar of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, and eagle sculptures for the Boston Customs House.

Eagle sculptures of the Boston Customs House

While living in New Orleans, Bottinelli would created numerous sculptures for various clients. Many of these works of art can still be seen today, one of which is located at the American Italian Cultural Center, pictured below.

Bottinelli's artwork currently located in New Orleans:

  • Eagle with Garlands, Limestone, American Italian Cultural Center, 537 S. Peters Street, originally commissioned by Whitney National Bank, relocated to AICC in 2004.

  • Ionic Capitals with Eagles, Flowers and Leaves, Milford Pink Granite, 301 St. Charles Avenue

  • Eagle, Granite, Lobby of Federal Reserve Bank, 500 St. Charles Avenue

  • Capitals, Pediments and Garland, Korean First Presbyterian Church, 4439 Canal Street

  • Baptismal Fount, White Alabama Marble, St. ANthony of Padua Catholic Church, 4640 Canal Street

  • Julius Bowsky Family Tombstone, Granite, Chevra Thelim Cemetery, 4800 Canal Street

  • Henry A. Phillips Memorial, rose and scroll, White Alabama Marble, Dispersed of Judah Cemetery, 4900 Canal Street
  • Six urns with acorn finials, Granite, Metairie Cemetery 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, Rudolph T. O'Dwyer Tomb, Maurice Stern coping, George J. Springer Tomb.

Chef Matt of L'enfant Terrible is back this Tuesday with another slew of market fresh creations for all you hungry market shoppers. Come on out tomorrow and check out what's on the menu!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
We're so thrilled to see the greens slowly make their return to market as the Fall continues its approach to New Orleans. They're small in number now so be sure to get to market early to get some for yourself. The Monicas have been bringing some beautiful collard greens the past few markets. If you're lucky enough to pick some up for yourself, why not try this Collard Wrap recipe out?
Collard Wraps
We're so thrilled to see the greens slowly make their return to market as the Fall continues its approach to New Orleans. They're small in number now so be sure to get to market early to get some for yourself.
Ingredients:
6-8 large, whole collard leaves
Large pot of water
Large bowl of cold water; keep the water in the sink, and add more cold water after adding the hot greens to continue to cool
Directions:
In order to make the greens easy to roll, the tough stem needs to be removed.  Turn leaf so that the protruding stem faces up, using a paring knife, gently shave the stem off the leaf, starting at the interior of the leaf and working outward toward the stalk. (See this website for great pictures & tutorial http://www.choosingraw.com/collard-wrap-tutorial/)
Boil water, add 3-4 greens at a time, careful not to break the leaves.  Boil for one minute, remove using tongs and place into cold water for one minute.  Remove from cold water, lay on flat surface on paper/dish towels.
To assemble:
1. Place one wrap on a flat surface, with the cut side facing you.
2. Put a line of filling from 1 inch from the stalk down the center of the spine of the leaf. Pile chopped veggies on top of the filling.
3. Fold the stem side and the top side of the leaf towards the center, fold one of the other edges towards the center, then roll the wrap towards the non-folded side.
4. Store with the edge of the leaf facing downwards. Cover to keep dry.

Andrew Malan Milward

I WAS A

&
M. O. Walsh
author of
MY SUNSHINE AWAY

Grounded in place, spanning the Civil War to the present day, the stories in I WAS A REVOLUTIONARY capture the roil of history through the eyes of an unforgettable cast of characters: the visionaries and dreamers, the radical farmers and socialist journalists, the quack doctors and protesters who haunt the past and present landscape of the American heartland.

Andrew Malan Milward is the author of the story collection The Agriculture Hall of Fame, which was awarded the Juniper Prize in Fiction by the University of Massachusetts. He has served as the McCreight Fiction Fellow at the University of Wisconsin, a Steinbeck Fellow at San Jose State University, and has received fellowships and awards from the Lannan Foundation, Jentel, and Yaddo. He lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he teaches at the University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Writers and is editor-in-chief of Mississippi Review..

MY SUNSHINE AWAY unfolds in a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom. But in the summer of 1989, when fifteen-year-old Lindy Simpson-free spirit, track star, and belle of the block-experiences a horrible crime late one evening near her home, it becomes apparent that this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia has a dark side, too.

Walsh brilliantly juxtaposes the enchantment of a charmed childhood with the gripping story of a violent crime, unraveling families, and consuming adolescent love. Acutely wise and deeply honest, it is an astonishing and page-turning debut about the meaning of family, the power of memory, and our ability to forgive.

M.O. Walsh's fiction and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Oxford American, The Southern Review, American Short Fiction, Epoch, and Best New American Voices, among others. He is  director of the Creative Writing Workshop at the University of New Orleans.

Hester Young
featuring her debut novel
THE GATES
OF EVANGELINE

When New York journalist and recently bereaved mother Charlotte Charlie Cates begins to experience vivid dreams about children she's sure that she's lost her mind. Yet these are not the nightmares of a grieving parent, she soon realizes. They are messages and warnings that will help Charlie and the children she sees, if only she can make sense of them.

After a little boy in a boat appears in Charlie's dreams asking for her help, Charlie finds herself entangled in a thirty-year-old missing-child case that has never ceased to haunt Louisiana's prestigious Deveau family. Armed with an invitation to Evangeline, the family's sprawling estate, Charlie heads south, where new friendships and an unlikely romance bring healing. But as she uncovers long-buried secrets of love, money, betrayal, and murder, the facts begin to implicate those she most wants to trust and her visions reveal an evil closer than she could ve imagined.

Hester Young holds a Master's degree in English with a Creative Writing concentration from The University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and her work has been published in literary magazines such as The Hawai'i Review. Before turning to writing full time, she worked as a teacher in Arizona and New Hampshire. She lives with her husband and two children in New Jersey.

Do ya miss blueberries yet? Well, we have good news for you: that big 'ol bag of frozen blueberries is in the Box again, finally! Before we are all up to our noses in pumpkin pie (yum), try this blueberry pie recipe using those berries from your Box. Share with us, yes?

Ingredients
20 ounces blueberries, approximately 4 cups
4 ounces sugar, approximately 1/2 cup
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/4 ounces tapioca flour, approximately 5 tablespoons
1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
2 (9-inch) homemade or store-bought pie doughs
1 egg yolk whisked with 1 teaspoon water

Instructions
1.Wash the berries and pat dry. Mash up half of the blueberries in a small bowl.
2.In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, salt and tapioca flour. Add the mashed blueberries, orange juice and orange zest and stir to combine. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes. Fold in the whole berries.
3.Line a 9-inch pie plate with aluminum foil. Place the blueberry mixture into the foil and place in the freezer until solid, approximately 6 to 8 hours.
4.Once the filling is frozen, remove from the aluminum foil and wrap in plastic wrap and store in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

BAKING
1.Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.
2.Unroll first piece of dough and place into a 9-inch pie pan, making sure the dough reaches to the lip of the pie pan. Trim excess, if necessary. Prick the bottom and sides with a fork and set aside.
3.Unroll second piece of dough and cut into 1 1/8-inch wide strips (should result in 9 to 10 strips). I use a pizza cutter for this but a sharp-pointed paring knife will work also, as long as the dough is chilled.
4.Remove the frozen pie filling from the freezer and place into the prepared dough in the pan.
5.Although lattice tops can be built directly on the pie, I rather weave it separately, wrap in foil and refrigerate for half an hour or so before placing it on the top of the pie. See drawings below for assembly guide.
6.Position the lattice on top of the pie and crimp around the edge with a fork. (If you refrigerated it beforehand, place on top of pie and leave at room temperature for 10 minutes before continuing.)
7.Lightly brush the edge of the crust with the egg yolk and place pie on the bottom rack of the oven. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until the pie bubbles around the edges.
8.Place the pie on a rack and cool to room temperature before serving, approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

LATTICE
1.Remove every other strip leaving 4-5 horizontally aligned.
2.Weave the removed strips vertically into the horizontal strips creating a basket-weave lattice.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

  • Ogden After Hours - The Breton Sound
    06:00 PM - 08:00 PM

Since 2010, New Orleans natives The Breton Sound have been proving them wrong with their brand of energetic, melodic, and anthemic rock and roll. The band's co-founders, singer/guitarist Jonathan Pretus (formerly of Cowboy Mouth) and guitarist Stephen Turner, have helmed the release of their first two EP's, 2011's "Eudaemonia," and 2013's "Maps," to rave reviews. Upon the release of "Maps," PASTE Magazine hailed them as one of "12 Louisiana Bands You Should Listen To."
The band's rhythm section, consisting of twin brothers John and Joe Bourgeois, are no strangers to the road. John came up in the regionally popular ska band Fatter Than Albert, while Joe honed his chops touring the country in NOLA-based indie band MyNameIsJohnMichael.
It's more than clear on the band's upcoming 2 EP project, "Don't Be Afraid of Rock and Roll," that these guys grew up on big, loud guitars calling to mind Oasis or Foo Fighters, soaring melodies and harmonies not far removed from old-school Weezer or Jimmy Eat World, and a little bit of face-melting guitar. Pretus' vocal melodies and hook-filled choruses reach for the back of the arenas, then step away for Turner (who did time in the critically acclaimed instrumental-prog band Epic) to take over with solos that sound like Muse if they'd grown up listening to Van Halen. Joe Bourgeois' bass moves aggressively and melodically, but with an economy that is the hallmark of a great bassist, while brother John provides an unstoppable foundation for each song, never sacrificing the feel while pulling out a fill that makes the listener rewind and wonder how he played that.
The Breton Sound has toured throughout the southeast and mid-west, including stops at such major festivals as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Milwaukee Summerfest, the Voodoo Experience.

Everyone loves a hot mess. Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Honey Boo Boo, Heidi and Spencer Pratt, The Real Housewives of [insert city here]. We watch them out of admiration, out of fascination, and - let's be honest - out of a hidden desire to see them fall from grace. The eighteenth-century version of the reality star was Marie Antoinette. Adore her, admonish her, despise her or behead her, the one thing you couldn't do was ignore her. In David Adjmi's hot new play, the queen that everyone has an opinion of is finally given her own voice, and you might be surprised by what comes out. Marie Antoinette has played Yale Rep, SOHO Rep, A.R.T. and Steppenwolf Theatre, and we are thrilled to present this regional premiere to a city that knows a thing or two about French royalty. Three-time Big Easy Award-winning director Mark Routhier (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Balm in Gilead) will direct and Big Easy Entertainer of the Year Cecile Monteyne will star as the controversial queen.

NEW ORLEANS  - Historically speaking,  there may not have been a stronger musical partnership than the one that existed between Antoine "Fats" Domino and Dave Bartholomew. The iconic collaboration would sell over 65 million records and rack up over three dozen top 40 hits. Yet, despite the staggering numbers and the longevity of their careers, there was no venue in the duo's hometown that was dedicated solely to preserving the quintessential New Orleans sound. Actor, director and co-creator Lucky Johnson decided to change that with "Walking to New Orleans", a "Vegas Style" musical tribute to the New Orleans natives.

Salon by Sucré is excited to announce details about Cicchetti - a special Italian-style happy hour that the recently-opened French Quarter restaurant is now offering on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm.

In Italy, Cicchetti  refers to small, complimentary snacks or side dishes displayed on the bar in the early evening while guests sip on cocktails. Drawing on this inspiration, Salon is offering a variety of bruschetta and other small snacks free of charge along with $5 drink specials on classic New Orleans cocktails like Sazeracs, Death in the Afternoon, and Tennessee Williams. Cicchetti  is available at Salon every Thursday from 4pm - 7pm.

Salon is the culmination of Sucré's beautiful approach to haute cuisine and its passion for exceptional service and presentation. It blends the formality of New Orleans service with the globally-inspired cuisine of Tariq Hanna in a casual dining room. Hanna's menu draws from a variety of influences, including his Middle Eastern heritage, childhood in West Africa and time spent in Great Britain. Beth McCaskey, an 18 year veteran of NYC's Union Square Café, heads up the bar program, offering several classics, new creations, and an entire tea cocktail program based on Salon's impressive afternoon tea service.

Salon by Sucré is located at 622 Conti Street in New Orleans. For reservations call 504-267-7098 and for more information visit www.shopsucre.com/store-locations
