Jazz in the Park launches The Treme Art Exhibit

Jazz in the Park Art - Sheleen Jones

MEDIA ADVISORY

CONTACT: Emanuel Lain Jr.

[email protected]

504.233.8276

A showcase of Treme Life through Art

NEW ORLEANS - Jazz in the Park will return April 16th with a stellar roster of New Orleans music for its Seventh Season, but before the spring season starts, Jazz in the Park has organized a major retrospective of Treme Life, which depicts its people, places and culture through art.

The Treme Art Exhibit, on display from April 14th to July 6th, tells the story of what makes the Treme community such a great place to live, work and play. Featuring 25 artists of various backgrounds, the exhibit highlights everyday life of ordinary and extraordinary past and present Treme residents. It captures the culture of the Treme, an integral part of New Orleans' spirit.

What: Treme Art Exhibit Grand Opening Ceremony hosted by Jazz in the Park

Theme: "Turning Blight into Beauty"

Where: Jazz Compound (formerly the National Jazz Park in Armstrong Park)

When: Tuesday, April 14th 2015

Time: 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Inspired by the success and vision of Exhibit Be, Emanuel Lain, Executive Director of People United for Armstrong Park (PUFAP), which produces Jazz in the Park, used his experience of producing over 55 Jazz in the Park shows and his contacts within the community to immediately start orchestrating the exhibit. He called out to artists, asking them to capture the Treme through their art. Artists responded quickly and they managed to pull together the entire show in a matter of weeks.

Emanuel Lain said, "We have been highlighting the Treme music and culture in our Jazz in the Park concert series for the last four years, but we also wanted to memorialize the Treme neighborhood through art. Beautifying these blighted buildings with art turns "Blight into Beauty."

Damon Batiste of NOSACONN is an integral part of the project, sponsoring the whole exhibit. Emanuel said, "I don't think there is another person like Damon.  He really cares about the culture of New Orleans and without his support it would have been difficult to create such an exciting project."

Nat Williams, local artist and Co-producer of the exhibit, has been a fixture in the Treme community his entire life. He is an important link between the artists and culture. He comments, "I am the plug and link in the chain that connects the dots...when PUFAP came to me with this idea I immediately put Mr. Lain in touch with some of the best artists in the city.  I am an artist and I have an eye for identifying other good artists and this exhibit will feature some of the best artists in the business."

Meryt Harding, local artist and Co-producer stated, "It has been great to collaborate with so many different New Orleans artists. This exhibit is important as it not only beautifies a well known space, but it also makes artwork more accessible - taking it out of museums and galleries and into the streets."

Come Meet the Artists!

If needed, please feel free to park in Armstrong Park.

COMMUTER TIPS

Bicycling to work is easy and safe. To have the best experience possible, follow the tips below:

  • Use our Bicycle Commuter Guide and Bike Map to find your way.
  • Act as if you were driving a vehicle - ride in the direction with traffic, stop at stop signs, be predictable
  • Routes that parallel busy streets are often better for bicycles. Look for smooth surfaces, low traffic speeds and volumes
  • Determine where you will store your bike while you work before you show up (many places have garage or locations inside!)
  • Wear comfortable clothing, and a helmet is always a smart idea
  • Make sure your bike is in working order a few days before
  • Still feeling hesitant? Bring a FREE Bicycle Safety Workshop to your workplace - contact anneka (at) bikeeasy.org.
WHY BIKE TO WORK:

Biking to work is a great way to stay healthy, feel better, save money on gas, help the environment, and experience our City!

Before Hurricane Katrina, Orleans Parish had fewer than 11 miles of bike lanes and pedestrian walkways. Thanks to a grant from Entergy Corporation and a partnership between the City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Public Health Institute, the city now boasts almost 100 miles of completed bikeways and pedestrian walkways with more scheduled for 2015. As a result, the City of New Orleans has been recognized as a Silver-Level Bike Friendly City by the League of American Bicyclists. Residents in the greater metropolitan New Orleans area can now access a growing bikeway network of more than 140 miles.

 Swirl Wine Bar & Market

3143 Ponce de Leon Street

New Orleans, LA 70119

Wednesday, April 15, 6-8pm - Wednesday Nite Flites - Venge!! - Swirl has been fortunate enough to be the main New Orleans retailer for the Nils & Kirk Venge wines for quite awhile now and the 95 point Silencieux has been huge hit with both our old world and new world Cabernet fans.  So when our rep Joey asked to present a few more of these super high quality wines by the Venge team we decided Fridays are a bit too crazy for 4 wines at these price points but a Wednesday Nite Flite would be the perfect venue! So please join us and Bacchus Wine Distributors for a really special night of Napa Valley wines from Envy and Venge.  The flite of 4 wines is $15 and truly shouldn't be missed, no matter what is happening in Lafayette Square :) No reservations required.

April 15, Warren Battiste

On April 15 UNO's Jazz @ the Sandbar welcomes guitarist Warren Battiste, who will be performing with UNO Jazz student combos under the direction of Hank Mackie and Jordan Baker.

Warren Battiste was born in New Orleans in 1925 and was taught to play the guitar by his father, who was a banjo player at Preservation Hall. Through continued study and hard work, he became proficient not only on guitar, but also bass, banjo, and piano.

Battiste was the first guitarist to play with Fats Domino on a regular basis, and he went on to play with jazz saxophonist Illinois Jacquet in New York. This gave him a very broad knowledge of styles, including classic blues, R&B, and jazz, all of which are evident in his playing.

In New Orleans, Warren has performed at Preservation Hall, Snug Harbor, the Matador and many other venues. Warren also appeared in the film "Shy People," starring Jill Clayburgh and Barbara Hershey. Warren has performed with fellow guitarist George Benson, organist Jimmy McGriff, and he has accompanied popular vocal groups, such as The Platters and The Inkspots, to name a few.

In 2000 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Jazz from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. In 2001 he released his debut CD "Street Jazz" to rave reviews and solid sales. He was back in the studio in 2004 for a second CD entitled "Just Friends."

Warren Battiste was one of the many victims of hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was rescued from an interstate overpass where he spent two days with several others after being forced to leave his residence by floodwaters. With all that behind him now, he has reached into the experience to come out with a new record release of "Quiet Storm." For this recording, he is joined by his regular trio mates, bassist Jim Markway and drummer Richard Hale, along with pianist Larry Sieberth. "Quiet Storm" is an impressive recording by a New Orleans guitar master in his 80's who is still in his musical prime.

For more on Battiste, visit his website at www.warrenbattiste.com.

The Elm Theatre presents
NEVER SWIM ALONE by Daniel MacIvor
thru - April 18
Thursdays - Saturdays, 8pm

Old Marquer Theatre, 2400 St Claude Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117

Directed by Joanna Russo, NEVER SWIM ALONE is a hilarious satire centered around a 13-round, boxing style competition between Frank and Bill. Guided by a blue-bathing suited Referee, the two mean ruthlessly fight for the Top Dog title; calling into question the fighting dog we all have within us.

"NEVER SWIM ALONE is a story told in a structure we haven't explored at The Elm Theatre," said Artistic Director, Garrett Prejean. It's a new challenge for Elm. "The thing that really excited me about this play was how theatrical it was, yet it keeps to our focus: relationships."

The production runs  through April 18th, and will feature Artistic Director, Garrett Prejean (Frank), Big Easy nominee Nicholas Stephens (Bill), and a new local talent ,Tenea Intriago (Referee).

Where: Old Marquer Theatre (2400 St. Claude Ave)

Has your sex life gone downhill after marriage?

Ann Landers has the answers.

Get the answers at JPAS's

THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS!

Starring

Janet Shea

Directed by

"Uncle" Wayne Daigrepont

THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS

For decades, renowned advice columnist Ann Landers answered countless letters from lovelorn teens, confused couples, and a multitude of others in need of advice. No topic was off-limits, including nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, the proper was to hang toilet paper, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion, and wandering spouses. Landers regaled her readers with direct, insightful, and often humorously honest responses. Late on a 1975 night in Landers' Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak: her own. As she shares her struggles to complete the column with us, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about the wise, funny, no-nonsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last half century.

Music Box Roving Village in City Park

The musical shantytown

The Music Box Roving Village: City Park will host concerts with the houses serving as the orchestra. Its  performances are 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The bright, intricate nests made by bowerbirds inspired Ross Harmon and Frank Pahl's shack, surrounded with heavy chimes tuned to different scales. The inside is completely covered in mosaic mirrors.

Callie Curry (aka Swoon) collaborated with New Orleans blacksmith Darryl Reeves on a gazebo-like structure, detailed with lattice-like brass cuttings and Reeves' brass instruments twisted into the house's frame. A pneumatic switchboard in the center controls the horns

A tall windmill-inspired silo topped with tubes and metal shaped into musical ceiling fans. Slowly pull a rope from the ornate pulley system inside the house and you'll hear the tubes catch air as they turn into resonating chambers bellowing slightly dissonant tones.

"We'll probably have only heard our instruments playing together for the first time the day before, "It'll be sunset when people first arrive. We want them to feel like they've entered an enchanted world. They'll come in, find these musical houses, find their seats - they'll be all over the place - and we'll have a concert that we have no idea what it will sound like."

New Orleans Earth Day Festival & Solar Derby presented by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade

WHAT: The Seventh Annual New Orleans Earth Day Festival and Solar Derby is sponsored by the solar industry.  This year's festival is also a commemoration of the 5th year since the BP Disaster. The best way to prevent future spills is to go solar.

The Earth Day Festival is the only spring music festival not sponsored by an oil company.

WHEN and WHERE:           Saturday, April 18th, 11 am to 7:30 pm,  Palmer Park

WHO:  The Louisiana Bucket Brigade

Musicians: Theresa Andersson, The Stooges Brass Band, Mia Borders, Earphunk, and Africa Brass

Featured speaker: General Russell Honoré of the GreenARMY

WHY: Louisiana is a solar state; there are more solar panels in Louisiana than there are residents in Orleans Parish. This year, as we recognize the 5th anniversary of the 2010 BP Disaster, the best way to commemorate the loss of life and the damage to our livelihoods and our Gulf of Mexico is to go solar. There is no such thing as a solar spill!

The 2015 festival will feature the first ever Solar Derby, sponsored by PosiGen Green Grants. The Solar Derby is a hands-on, family-friendly way to spark the idea that it's possible to run your car on the sun. "We are excited to continue our relationship with the New Orleans Earth Day festival and extremely proud to be the first sponsor for the Solar Derby, which will educate young minds on the field of Solar Energy while showing their families the best energy solutions available for their lives," says Nick Napolitano of PosiGen Green Grants. No oil needed!

"Earth Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the good work of New Orleans' environmental groups and learn about solar energy," said Anne Rolfes, Founding Director of the Louisiana Bucket Brigade. "The BP Oil Spill is just one example of the true price we pay for oil. It is time to transition to clean energy, to solar energy." The focus of the festival is to heighten New Orleans' understanding of the need for environmental protection and community involvement.

New Orleans Musica da Camera is the oldest surviving early music organization in the country, founded in 1966 by director Milton G. The ensemble performs in the culturally diverse neighborhoods in and around the Crescent City and throughout the Gulf South, presenting a variety of performances, lectures and workshops. Vox Feminæ, the women's vocal ensemble of Musica da Camera, was founded in 1994 by St. Julien.   "Steinway & Sons is delighted to welcome Matt

into the family of Steinway Artists," said Jenn Gordon, Manager of Concert & Artist Activities at Steinway & Sons. "His commitment to Jazz education and artistic excellence as demonstrated through his Jazz recordings make it most appropriate that he is now included in the Steinway Artist Roster." Steinway Artists are a select and prestigious group which includes classical pianists like Lang Lang, jazz stars like Diana Krall, pop icons like Billy Joel and Randy Newman, and "immortals" like George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, to New Orleans legends such as Harry Connick, Jr. and Ellis Marsalis. More than 1,600 artists make the Steinway their own.

In celebration of Matt Lemmler being named a Steinway Artist, he will perform a program of music honoring beloved Steinway Artists, as well as offer his own versions of beloved hymns at Esplanade Studios (Louisiana's largest recording studio.) The program will be recorded, resulting in the production of two albums that will be available to the public at a later date.

Beginning at 3:00pm, (first seating opens at 2:30) the first session will be followed by an intermission, where food and beverages will be available. We will reconvene with the second session starting at 5:00pm, with seating available at 4:30pm.

Tickets

$20.00--General Admission

$50.00--General Admission plus signed CD's from performance

$500.00--General Admission plus Executive Producer status on CD, plus complimentary IN-Home Concert by Matt Lemmler on a Steinway & Sons piano (provided by Hall Piano Company)

We also want to share our "Conversations with the Artist" for anyone interested in having Matt come perform his brand new show experience. We received wonderful reviews from our recent Atlanta house concert and an exclusive afternoon performance at Steinway Piano Galleries in Alpharetta, GA.

We're starting to book some dates for a Summer/Fall tour at churches, house parties, colleges and Steinway Piano Galleries. If you or your group wants to experience Matt's musical stories from growing up in the Lower 9th Ward to musical portraits of the Living Legends/Immortal Steinway Artists including George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington to Billy Joel, Randy Newman, Harry Connick, Jr. and his jazz piano mentor Ellis Marsalis, then let us know. We'd love to bring our NOLAJazzRevival to you.

For more information about having "Conversations with the Artist" at your house party or other venue, or to come be a guest for "Live at Esplanade Studios," please email Matt directly at [email protected] or visit  www.mattlemmler.com.

New Orleanians can expect a parade on April 23, when five warships and a Coast Guard cutter arrive for NOLA Navy Week 2015. Like three years ago, soldiers will fire artillery salutes, and the amphibious assault flattop USS Wasp again will serve as the flagship. The days that follow will include public tours of ships, a seafood cook-off between ships' mess specialists and local chefs, and a fireworks show over the Mississippi River.

"It's a momentous occasion for the port and our citizens," said Mark Romig, president and chief executive for the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp., which is helping the Navy host the event. "The Navy always enjoys their visits as well."

In addition to the Wasp, the Navy is sending the USS Cole and USS James E. Williams, both destroyers. Canada is sending the destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain is sending the frigate HMS Lancaster. The U.S. Coast Guard's 210-foot cutter Dauntless also is set to visit.

"The public will get a chance to see some of the world's most advanced warships, gear and equipment, while our sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and allied sailors will have an opportunity to enjoy the great city of New Orleans," said Rear Adm. Cindy Thibaud, commander of the U.S. Navy's Expeditionary Strike Group 2, which is based in Norfolk, Va. The group is the Navy's organization behind NOLA Navy Week 2015.

During NOLA Navy Week 2012, more than 121,000 people toured the ships that were berthed along the riverfront, from the Crescent City Connection to the Gov. Nichols Street Wharf. The ships this year will berth along the same stretch of riverfront, where public tours will be offered during the week.

Missing from the line-up this year will be tall ships. Three of them visited in 2012, including the Coast Guard barque Eagle. The Eagle was expected to return this year, but for reasons that are unclear, the barque is not included in the line-up.

40th Anniversary

@the Stamboat Natchez

Did you know the NATCHEZ is the only steam powered steamboat remaining on the river? This month, the beloved steamboat is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Hop on board for a cruise and learn more about this piece of NOLA history!

New Orleans Steamboat Company Celebrates Anniversary

Steamboat NATCHEZ-40 Years Strong

New Orleans, LA (March 4, 2015)- This April, the New Orleans Steamboat Company will celebrate their 40th anniversary to commemorate the day the Steamer NATCHEZ first set sail on April 13, 1975.

Before modern transportation, the Mississippi River was the main highway and steamboats were a means of trade and travel. Today, however, the NATCHEZ is the only steam powered steamboat remaining on the river.

She is the ninth steamer to bear this name and it was her predecessor NATCHEZ VII that raced the ROBERT E. LEE in the most famous steamboat race of all time. Her line traces back to 1823 where NATCHEZ I was built in New York City and operated out of New Orleans. It's a line of steamers that follows the course of river history, from the relaxed plantation era, the turbulence of the Civil War, through the nineties and today.

"The NATCHEZ is a beloved icon of the city of New Orleans that has launched the riverfront revitalization," says Gordon Stevens, president and CEO of the New Orleans Steamboat Company. "As the last authentic steamboat on the Mississippi, we offer tourists a unique experience and a view of the city from the river that is unsurpassed."

The NATCHEZ sails three times daily and features live jazz music, live narration from a steamboat captain, Steam Engine Room visits, calliope concerts, and authentic Creole cuisine and beverages.

For more information and to make reservations, please visit www.steamboatnatchez.com or call 504-569-1401.

New Orleans Saints Preseason:
  Saints Logo 2011

In their four-game 2015 preseason schedule, three of the New Orleans Saints' opponents will be from the AFC, while all four posted winning records in 2014.

The Saints will kick off their 2015 preseason when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. This will be the second consecutive year that New Orleans will face Baltimore in the preseason. In addition to hosting the Ravens in a 22-13 preseason loss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on August 28, 2014, the Saints later dropped a 34-27 home decision to Baltimore on November 24. This will be the first time the Saints play at the Ravens in the preseason. Baltimore holds a 2-0 advantage in the preseason series.

The following week, the Saints will host the New England Patriots in the home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. It will mark the first time that the Saints have hosted the Super Bowl XLIX Champions in the preseason since 1986 and the first time the Saints play a defending Super Bowl champion in the preseason since they played at the Patriots in 2005. New England holds a 6-4 edge in the preseason series.

New Orleans will then host the Houston Texans on Sunday, August 30 in a nationally televised contest on FOX. Kickoff is 3 p.m. CT. The Saints have posted a 4-3 preseason record against the Texans, having faced them in exhibitions in six consecutive years from 2008-13. The Saints are also scheduled to play the Texans in the regular season at NRG Park.

New Orleans will wrap up its preseason slate in Green Bay. The Saints and Packers have not faced each other in the preseason since 2004, a game which was also played at Lambeau Field. New Orleans defeated Green Bay 44-23 on October 26, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last meeting. This year's contest will be the ninth preseason meeting between the two teams, with the Packers holding a 6-2 edge.

In addition to the artist's works showing familiar horses and dancers, lesser-known depictions of antique sculpture and Old Masters will be on view.

The works come from a single private collection.

Featuring drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs, all from a single private collection, the exhibition illuminates the background and personality of Degas the individual, as well as to present his skill as an artist. The show's subject matter is often personal: In addition to three rare self-portraits, depictions of family members and friends are also included. Works touch upon three notable themes of Degas' oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and the ballet.  Enriching the exhibition are a selection of more than forty works on paper of well-known artists, many of whom were friends of Degas.

NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

NOLA Navy Week

April 23-29, 2015

Since its earliest years under the American flag, New Orleans has been the site of a major naval presence. Although it is more than 100 miles from the nearest body of open water, the width and depth of the Mississippi River has made our port city accessible for naval vessels of all sizes, types and classes to berth here.

New Orleans' longstanding naval tradition will be celebrated from April 23-29 as NOLA Navy Week returns to the Mississippi Riverfront. During that week, six ships from three nations will line the banks of the river between the French Quarter and the Crescent City Connection bridge. All of these ships will be open to the public for free, on-board tours starting Friday, April 24.

The U.S. Navy is bringing in the USS Wasp, the USS Cole and the USS James E. Williams and the U.S. Coast Guard will be represented by the USCGC Dauntless. The British Royal Navy is represented by the HMS Lancaster and the Royal Canadian Navy will bring in the HMCS Athabaskan.

Other events scheduled that week in conjunction with the event include:

*An official Navy Week Gala held at the National World War II Museum on the night of Friday, April 24.

*A Seafood Cook Off held the morning of Sunday, April 26 at the Spanish Plaza in downtown New Orleans, adjacent to the river and next to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. The Cook Off will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature culinary specialists from each of the participating ships, paired with local chefs.

*A fireworks display over the river on the evening of Monday, April 27, with viewing from Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Algiers Point on the opposite bank.

Other events, including musical concerts, may also be scheduled for the week. Check back at the Navy Week website, www.nolanavyweek.com for the latest updates.

Visitations

All of the ships will be open daily for free general public visitation beginning on Friday, April 24 and ending Tuesday, April 28. Hours of operation vary for each ship throughout the week. Check the schedules for the individual ships in the write-ups below.

Visitors will be allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait in line during peak times. Because these are active military ships, visitors can also expect security screenings prior to boarding.

About the Ships

USS Wasp

The tenth ship to bear the official Navy designation, the Wasp name has a history as long as the United States itself. Warships under that name have seen action and emerged victorious in nearly all conflicts involving the U.S. from the American Revolution through the present. The currently sailing USS Wasp is a U.S. Navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, launched in 1989 and it is the flagship of the Second Fleet, as well as the lead ship of its class.

The Navy-Marine Corps team's newest amphibious warship has as its primary mission the support of a Marine Landing Force. She and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and certain types of jets that provide close air support for the assault force. The Wasp's dimensions are 843 feet long with a beam (width) of 105 feet, which can accommodate the full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles.

It will be docked at 500 Port of New Orleans Place, near Port of New Orleans offices, just upriver from the Crescent City Connection.

 Public open visitation times are:

*Friday, April 24: 12:30-5:00 p.m.

*Saturday, April 25: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Sunday, April 26: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Monday, April 27: (closed for the afternoon; open for private tours in the morning)

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

USS Cole

The USS Cole made international headlines on October 12, 2000 when it was the target of an al-Qaeda terrorist attack while anchored in the harbor of Aden, Yemen. During the attack, 17 American sailors were killed, 39 were injured and the ship suffered extensive damage to its hull.

The Cole is an Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer. She was built in March 1996. After the 2000 attack, the Cole was repaired and redeployed in 2003. The Cole is 505 feet long with a beam of 66 feet. The ship's motto, "Glory is the Reward of Valor," pays tribute to its namesake, Marine Sergeant Darrell S. Cole.

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
