FRESH & LOCAL

Last month as Rocking R Dairy ended their retail meat and dairy career, and with it their time with us here at CCFM, to focus on growing their business with wholesale accounts, we were saddened to see our dairy vendors of seven years leave. With their leaving, however, also came a feeling of optimism and excitement as well; optimism that public markets can not only help keep small dairy farmers in business but keep them thriving, and excitement at the prospect of helping another small family-run dairy not just stay in business but grow.

CCFM staff has worked hard to bring on new meat and dairy vendors in Rocking R Dairy's absence in effort to further assist two more family run dairies obtain the same opportunities, and bring good local food to residents of New Orleans. If you've come out to our Tuesday or Saturday markets in this past month then it's likely you've come across Country Girl's Creamery with their fantastic cheeses, butter, grass-fed beef and pork. Now, we're pleased to introduce the newest vendors at our Tuesday market, G&M Goat Farm. Located not too far from Country Girl's Creamery in Wiggins, MS, G&M Goat Farm is a small family run goat dairy who you can find out at our Tuesday market every week with Goat cheeses, milk, cuts of goat and lamb meat.

With four markets running every week, we aim to do what we can to keep small family farms, dairies, and fishing families in business. Help us by doing what you can and stop by market to support these torchbearers of local food, business, and culture.

PICK OF THE WEEK: MARKETEERS ACTIVITY!

For this month's Marketeer activity we'll be doing arts and crafts with produce ends. From green ends to carrot tops, we'll be making stamps from the often unused parts of veggies and decorating early Mother's Day cards for all of our market mommas. Be sure to come on out and bring the kids!

COOKING DEMO WITH KID CHEF ELIANA!

The one and only Kid Chef Eliana is back at market with another awesome cooking demo for us this Saturday. Eliana may be young, but she's experienced in keeping kids engaged and interested in her fun cooking demos. If your marketeers haven't had a chance to see a Kid Chef Eliana demo yet, don't miss this one at 10am!

TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL

It's been a pleasure having Hillel's Kitchen out at market this month as our GPS vendors. We've still got one more Tuesday with them so be sure to come on out and grab a market-fresh plate! Be on stand-by for delicious Mexican goodness from our friends at Casa Borrega next month in May!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

We're thrilled to see that Johndale's Farm has been bringing beautiful early blueberries to all four markets in addition to their strawberries and blackberries. Seeing them back at market has got us thinking of all the delicious things we like to do with blueberries, besides just eating them raw of course. Looking for something new to do with those blueberries? Try out this Blueberry Crisps recipe for a sweet seasonal treat!

Blueberry Crisps

The recipe for these blueberry crisps comes to us courtesy of long-time market vendors and now loyal market shoppers Mary and Dana Logsdon of La Spiga.

Ingredients

Cobbler Dough

1 pound 14 ounces unsalted butter (keep cold)

5 eggs

10 tablespoons cold water

1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla

8-3/4 cups unbleached flour

3-1/3 cups sugar

1 cup cornmeal

1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Crumble Topping

1-1/2 cups unsalted butter (keep cold)

3-1/4 cups unbleached flour

1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar

1-1/2 cups granulated sugar

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Filling

3 pints fresh or frozen blueberries (See Note)

1/2 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup granulated sugar

Directions

To prepare Cobbler Dough: Cut butter into 1/2-inch cubes; keep chilled. Break eggs into a small bowl and beat lightly. Add water and vanilla to eggs, then refrigerate until ready to use. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt; blend using a mixer with a paddle attachment. Add chilled butter to dry ingredients and cut in (like mixing pie dough). If this amount is too large for your mixer, do it in batches or by hand. Mix until mixture looks like coarse meal. Turn off mixer and add egg mixture. Mix for a few seconds, just until dough starts to come together. Turn out dough onto a floured surface and finish incorporating any loose flour. Pat dough into a rectangle. Divide dough into two portions and wrap separately in plastic wrap. Chill several hours before rolling. Dough can be refrigerated for several days or it can be frozen.

To prepare Crumble Topping: Cut butter into 1/2-inch cubes; keep chilled. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon; blend using a mixer with a paddle attachment. Add chilled butter and mix until there are no more large pieces of butter but the mixture is not smooth (mixture should be crumbly/chunky). Crumble topping can be refrigerated for several days. Topping can also be used on pies or as muffin topping.

To assemble Blueberry Crisps: Place six flan rings equally spaced on a parchment-lined baking sheet or use individual tart pans. Spray rings/pans with nonstick baking spray.

Cut off a piece of chilled cobbler dough (keep the rest chilled) and roll on floured surface to a thickness of about 1/16 inch. Cut with 3 inch biscuit cutter, then press circle of dough into ring/pan. (Dough will be sticky. If there is a hole in the dough, patch with extra dough. Trim edges if sides overlap the ring/pan. Dough is very resilient and will puff up when baked. It may be easier to roll and cut circles and place on parchment-lined baking sheet to chill before lining all of the rings/pans at once.)

Once rings/pans are lined with dough, put a handful of fresh or frozen blueberries inside each one. Combine cornstarch and sugar; mix well. Sprinkle blueberries lightly with cornstarch mixture. Top with a heaping mound of crumble topping (it will melt down considerably during baking). Crisps can be refrigerated or even frozen at this point. Thaw frozen crisps in refrigerator before baking.

Preheat oven to 375 to 400 degrees. Bake crisps for about 45 minutes, turning pans after 15 minutes so crisps will bake evenly. Remove from oven when tops and sides of dough are golden (remove a ring to peek at side of dough). Cool before removing from rings/pans.

Note: These crisps can also be made with apples, pears, strawberries, pineapple, etc.

Makes 3 dozen

"Eggs & Crab Meat Hash"

Chef Michelle McRaney, Mr. B's Bistro

 from New Orleans Classic Brunches

In the Brennan family tradition, Mr. B's Bistro makes brunch a weekly event. Chef Michelle McRaney works closely with Cindy Brennan to salute the classic dishes and create new ones.

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 russet potatoes, peeled and in 1/2-inch dice

 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

 1/2 medium onion, diced

1/2 medium red bell pepper, diced

1/2 medium yellow bell pepper, diced

 1 garlic clove, minced

1 pound jumbo lump crab meat, picked over

3 tablespoons fresh chives, minced

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar

8 large eggs

1 cup orange hollandaise sauce

In a large nonstick skillet heat oil over high heat until hot but not smoking. Add potatoes and saut?, stirring constantly, until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

In another large skillet melt 2 tablespoons butter over moderate heat. Add onion, bell peppers, and garlic and cook 3 minutes, or until just wilted. Add potatoes, crab meat, chives, and salt and pepper and keep warm.

Butter bottom of a 2-quart heavy saucepan and add 1 1/4 inches water. Add vinegar and bring to a simmer. Break 1 egg into a cup and slide into water. Repeat with remaining 3 eggs, spacing them apart, and poach at a bare simmer until whites are firm but yolks are still runny, 2 to 3 minutes.

Transfer eggs as cooked with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain and season with salt and pepper. Serve hash topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.

Note: To make orange hollandaise add 1 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice as well as 2 teaspoons freshly grated orange zest to the sauce when you add the salt.

No. 1 With a Bullet - as an Indie!
How hard is to release your own albums and end up with a No. 1 on the Billboard chart? Not hard at all - just ask Texas country singer Aaron Watson. All it takes is 15 years, 12 albums and 2,000 shows - in other words, overnight success. We talk with Aaron's longtime manager, Anthony "Gino" Genaro, whose management company, Unrest Music Group, led the charge on Watson's latest record - which just last month debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard

The Rise of Sturgill Simpson
Two years ago, hardly anybody had heard of Sturgill Simpson, a deep-voiced guitar picker from Kentucky. But after two self-financed, self-released albums, he's won Best Emerging Artist at the 2014 Americana Music Awards and was nominated for a Grammy. Touring constantly and appearing on all the major TV shows, he is now dominating his genre - and recently signed with Atlantic Records. We talk to his whole team about how they caught lightning in a bottle and helped this artist go from zero to 420 in a flash.

David Macias, Co-Founder and CEO, Thirty Tigers
How can an indie artist release his/her own records, sell boatloads of copies, get tons of press and score Grammy nominations? Simple: Get signed by the Nashville-based distribution and marketing company Thirty Tigers. If you've got even a hint of twang in your sound, they own your genre. Witness the success of Jason Isbell, Aaron Watson and Sturgill Simpson - yep, all released as indies via Thirty Tigers, which is now also home to the New Orleans-based Kristin Diable. We talk to co-founder and CEO David Macias about how artists can own their own masters and still make it big.

Booking Agents Roundtable
It's long been said that getting a booking agent can be harder than getting a record deal - especially these days, now that even indie releases are getting Grammy nominations. So, what does a musician - whether a newcomer or a veteran - need to have before a booking agent will take them on? And once an artist signs with an agency, that means they'll never have to hustle for gigs ever again and their performance fees will always be in the mid-five figures - right? Maybe, maybe not. We've assembled a group of agents with long experience working with up-and-coming as well as established acts, including many from Louisiana.

Rock Stars of Crowdfunding
Once upon a time making records was simple: You signed with a label, they paid for you to go in the studio, they took care of the distribution and you owned (and, mostly likely, earned) nothing. Then came digital technology, and suddenly everybody could make records in their bedroom, right? Um, not so much. It still costs money to make a decent-sounding record in a quality studio. And now, with crowdfunding making a quick jump from anomaly to mainstream, there are a plethora of platforms from which to choose: Kickstarter, Pledge Music, Indiegogo, Go Fund Me, ArtistShare and many more. We've put together a panel of folks with deep experience in the local market and lessons to share based on real experience with several crowdfunding platforms. Come and help decide which is the right platform for you.

NOLA Navy Week

April 28-29, 2015

http://nolanavyweek.com/#information

28
29

New Orleans' longstanding naval tradition will be celebrated from April 27-29 as NOLA Navy Week returns to the Mississippi Riverfront. During that week, six ships from three nations will line the banks of the river between the French Quarter and the Crescent City Connection bridge. All of these ships will be open to the public for free, on-board tours

The U.S. Navy is bringing in the USS Wasp, the USS Cole and the USS James E. Williams and the U.S. Coast Guard will be represented by the USCGC Dauntless. The British Royal Navy is represented by the HMS Lancaster and the Royal Canadian Navy will bring in the HMCS Athabaskan.

Other events scheduled that week in conjunction with the event include:

*A fireworks display over the river on the evening of Monday, April 27, with viewing from Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Algiers Point on the opposite bank.

Other events, including musical concerts, may also be scheduled for the week. Check back at the Navy Week website, www.nolanavyweek.com

for the latest updates.

Visitations

All of the ships will be open daily for free general public visitation beginning on Friday, April 24 and ending Tuesday, April 28. Hours of operation vary for each ship throughout the week. Check the schedules for the individual ships in the write-ups below.

Visitors will be allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait in line during peak times. Because these are active military ships, visitors can also expect security screenings prior to boarding.

About the Ships

USS Wasp

The tenth ship to bear the official Navy designation, the Wasp name has a history as long as the United States itself. Warships under that name have seen action and emerged victorious in nearly all conflicts involving the U.S. from the American Revolution through the present. The currently sailing USS Wasp is a U.S. Navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, launched in 1989 and it is the flagship of the Second Fleet, as well as the lead ship of its class.

The Navy-Marine Corps team's newest amphibious warship has as its primary mission the support of a Marine Landing Force. She and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and certain types of jets that provide close air support for the assault force. The Wasp's dimensions are 843 feet long with a beam (width) of 105 feet, which can accommodate the full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles.

It will be docked at 500 Port of New Orleans Place, near Port of New Orleans offices, just upriver from the Crescent City Connection.

 Public open visitation times are:

*Monday, April 27: (closed for the afternoon; open for private tours in the morning)

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

USS Cole

The USS Cole made international headlines on October 12, 2000 when it was the target of an al-Qaeda terrorist attack while anchored in the harbor of Aden, Yemen. During the attack, 17 American sailors were killed, 39 were injured and the ship suffered extensive damage to its hull.

The Cole is an Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer. She was built in March 1996. After the 2000 attack, the Cole was repaired and redeployed in 2003. The Cole is 505 feet long with a beam of 66 feet. The ship's motto, "Glory is the Reward of Valor," pays tribute to its namesake, Marine Sergeant Darrell S. Cole.

The Cole will be berthed in the 1200 block of North Peters Street, adjacent to Woldenberg Park.

Public open visitation times are:

*Sunday, April 26: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Monday, April 27: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

USS James E Williams

The USS James E. Williams is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer named after Petty Officer 1st Class James Elliot Williams, a Medal of Honor recipient. Its maiden deployment was in May 2006 as part of the Global War on Terrorism Surface Strike Group, and the vessel completed this deployment in October of the same year. In 2007, the USS James E. Williams deployed again as part of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group

During this deployment, the James E. Williams was contacted by the North Korean cargo vessel, Dai Hong Dan, which had been taken over by Somalian pirates. The ship's crew provided medical assistance to Dai Hong Dan, and safely returned from deployment on December 17, 2007.

The Williams is 509 feet 6 inches long with a beam of 66 feet. It will tie up on the riverfront adjacent to the 1300 block of North Peters Street.

Public open visitation times are:

*Monday, April 27: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon- 5:00 p.m.

HMCS Athabaskan

The HMCS Athabaskan (DDG 282) is an Iroquois-class destroyer that has served both the Canadian Forces and the Royal Navy since 1972. This ship is the third vessel to use the designation HMCS Athabaskan. The ship is assigned to the Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and her homeport is Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Some of the ship's notable service efforts include the 2005 disaster relief in response to Hurricane Katrina and the disaster relief effort in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. The Athabaskan is 425.9 feet long with a beam of 49.9 feet, and it has both a hangar and a flight deck. It will berth at 1350 Port of New Orleans Place, alongside the Port of New Orleans office building.

Public open visitation times are:

*Monday, April 27: 12 noon-5:00 p.m.

*Tuesday, April 28: 12 noon-5:00 p.m.

HMS Lancaster

The HMS Lancaster is a "Duke" class frigate of the Royal Navy, also known as "The Queen's Frigate," in reference to Queen Elizabeth II who launched the ship in 1990. The Lancaster has been involved in numerous counter-narcotics missions in the Caribbean, as well as on missions tackling piracy, human trafficking, arms smuggling and other criminal and terrorist threats.

With a length of 436 feet 4 inches and a beam of 52 feet 10 inches, the Lancaster is equipped with a flight deck and enclosed hangar. Along with the Athabaskan, it will be tied up at 1350 Port of New Orleans Place.

Public open visitation times are:

*Monday, April 27: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

USCGC Dauntless

USCGC Dauntless is a U.S. Coast Guard cutter that was commissioned in 1968 and is named for an aspiration trait meaning to "persevere fearlessly." The Dauntless was homeported in Miami, Florida before being decommissioned at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, Maryland. She later underwent extensive renovations and returned to service soon afterward.

The Dauntless has earned the reputation of "drug buster" after numerous interceptions of illegal narcotics at sea. Other services include search and rescue operations. It was one of the first responders after the space shuttle Challenger disaster, and it took part in various homeland defense operations. The Dauntless has been featured in movies like "The Island" and the James Bond film, "License to Kill." It will be berthed in the 200 block of Bienville Street, adjacent to Woldenberg Park.

Author Event!

Photographer John Taylor Discusses His New Book Featuring

Snapshots of Paul and Linda McCartney

METAIRIE, LA - John Taylor, author of a new book of photography titled Wings Over New Orleans, Unseen Photos of Paul and Linda McCartney, 1975, will talk about and sign copies at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Books will be available for those who would like to purchase them.

In 1975, Paul and Linda McCartney came to New Orleans with Wings to record Venus and Mars at Allen Toussaint's famous Sea-Saint Studio. They immersed themselves in the city for several months, going to Mardi Gras with their children and enjoying local music as they worked on their album.

A chance meeting between John Taylor and the McCartneys led to a prolonged acquaintance, and Taylor, a professional musician, snapped scores of candid photographs of the famous couple. Taylor's recollections, along with those of other locals who spent time with the McCartneys and their children during their New Orleans stay, are included with more than 60 of these photographs, many published for the first time. According to Taylor, the McCartneys' graciousness and unpretentious nature shine through in these vignettes.

John Taylor is the bass player for the Meanies, a rock, funk, soul, and country band. A lifelong musician and songwriter, Taylor is also a background actor and has appeared in more than 40 movies, including Dallas Buyers Club. Taylor lives in Slidell.

The Legacy of John McDonogh is Topic

Of Jefferson Historical Society Meeting

METAIRIE, LA - Leighton Ciravolo, a local attorney and historian, will present "The Legacy of John McDonogh," at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required.

John McDonogh (1779-1850) was a merchant, planter, and philanthropist from New Orleans and Baltimore. He established a mercantile firm in New Orleans with partners and eventually expanded into other products, especially cotton. After the Depression of 1802, McDonogh acquired real estate throughout southern Louisiana and was considered one of the largest landowners at the time of his death.

McDonogh left his fortune to the cities of New Orleans, long his home, and Baltimore, his hometown, to provide public schools for poor white and freed black children.

Despite his philanthropy, McDonogh remains controversial because he also was a slave-holder. He gave his slaves the opportunity to purchase their freedom by working on their days set aside for rest in addition to accessing to an education and trade skills, a process that usually took 15 years.

Ciravolo is the author of The Legacy of John McDonogh, published by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in 2002.

FILM PREMIERE DURING JAZZ FEST CHRONICLES NON-STOP SWIM OF LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN IN 2014

NEW ORLEANS - Dancing in the Water - The latest film from Emmy award-winning filmmaker Wayne Ewing will premiere on Wednesday, April 29 at 8 p.m. at the classic Prytania Theatre. The film documents Louisiana native Matt Moseley as he swims 25 miles non-stop across Lake Pontchartrain. The swim celebrates the lake he treasures and the silver anniversary of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation that led its return to health.

Along the way, the film shows what it takes to restore a beautiful body of water. Marine scientists and experts on coastal erosion from the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation illustrate with their work how the Lake has recovered since Hurricane Katrina, proving the point that when left alone in the right way nature can heal itself.

The premiere is sponsored by the Louisiana Living History Foundation as their first film festival, and is also being presented by WWOZ whose radio host George Ingmire recorded the live music for the film.

"I want to acknowledge their success in cleaning up Lake Pontchartrain by actually being a part of the lake's ecology and taking a nice long swim," said Moseley.

"We are really excited to celebrate the hard work that our volunteers, supporters and employees have done to clean up Lake Pontchartrain and protect one of the most valuable resources we have in this region," LPBF's Dr. John Lopez said. "Having Matt here doing this swim is a perfect way to do that, and the timing couldn't be better. Matt and so many locals who support LPBF are an inspiration to LPBF staff who work every day for our mission, against the enormous challenges of our coast, and toward protecting our environment."

Musicians, including legendary composer David Amram and blues men Papa Mali and Alfred "Uganda" Roberts, provide the musical score for film.

Dancing in the Water is the first post-Katrina video documenting the recovery of Lake Pontchartrain.

Filmmaker Wayne Ewing, swimmer Matt Moseley, Papa Mali and John Lopez will be available for questions after the film. A reception and concert with Papa Mali and special guests will follow at Castillo Blanco for those who attend the premiere. Advance ticket sales here and at the Prytania Theatre starting at 7:00 pm.

Music Box Roving Village in City Park

The musical shantytown

The Music Box Roving Village: City Park will host concerts with the houses serving as the orchestra. Its  performances are 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The bright, intricate nests made by bowerbirds inspired Ross Harmon and Frank Pahl's shack, surrounded with heavy chimes tuned to different scales. The inside is completely covered in mosaic mirrors.

Callie Curry (aka Swoon) collaborated with New Orleans blacksmith Darryl Reeves on a gazebo-like structure, detailed with lattice-like brass cuttings and Reeves' brass instruments twisted into the house's frame. A pneumatic switchboard in the center controls the horns

A tall windmill-inspired silo topped with tubes and metal shaped into musical ceiling fans. Slowly pull a rope from the ornate pulley system inside the house and you'll hear the tubes catch air as they turn into resonating chambers bellowing slightly dissonant tones.

"We'll probably have only heard our instruments playing together for the first time the day before, "It'll be sunset when people first arrive. We want them to feel like they've entered an enchanted world. They'll come in, find these musical houses, find their seats - they'll be all over the place - and we'll have a concert that we have no idea what it will sound like."

Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business - a lemonade stand. It began in Houston, Texas in 2007. Since then it has grown from 2,700 kids to 200,000 kids in cities all across the country. With the help of partners like Google, Lemonade Day will bring this entrepreneurial experience to 1 million kids in 100 cities across America, sparking entrepreneurship and empowering youth in a way that's never been done to scale.

The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society - the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.

Each child that registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the 14 lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.

The Gay Krewe of Krewes parades Sunday, May 2

Since the late 1950s, gay men have been parading as Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans, and on Sunday, May 2 an homage and celebration to that tradition is in full order.

The first annual Gay Krewe of Krewes rolls at 7 p.m. starting at North Rampart Street and Elysian Fields Avenue. The parade will roll all the way down Decatur Street to Canal Street, then up Bourbon Street to Ursulines Avenue. It's a mega-Krewe formed of the existing gay krewes The Krewe of Amon-Ra (which is celebrating its 51st anniversary), Lords of Leather and the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon.

The New Orleans City Council is sponsoring the event, along with Harrah's, the New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corporation and a handful of French Quarter bars and hotels.

Intimate Evening Series at Le Petit Theatre to Star

Terence Blanchard Featuring the E-Collective

NEW ORLEANS, LA - April 14, 2015 -Terence Blanchard featuring the E-collective will perform for one night only in the Intimate Evening Series at Le Petit Theatre during the second weekend of New Orleans' Jazz Festival.  The performance will take place at the 365-seat Le Petit Th??tre du Vieux Carr?. Le Petit Theatre is the oldest playhouse in New Orleans and actors, designers, directors, and technicians, both locally and nationally, have shared their talents to make Le Petit a true shining star in the theatrical world. The intimate, yet electric show will take place on Saturday, May 2nd.

Since top-tier jazz and multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard embarked on his solo recording career with his eponymous Columbia Records album in 1991, the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings of original material, composing over 50 soundtracks and even, in 2013, debuting Champion: An Opera in Jazz. He has also, in the spirit of his onetime membership in the jazz school of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, mentored several musicians in his bands who have gone on to have significant recording careers of their own - including Lionel Loueke, Aaron Parks, Kendrick Scott and one of his current band members Fabian Almazan.

As a leader and co-leader (significantly four albums early in his career with fellow Crescent City artist, saxophonist Donald Harrison), Blanchard has recorded more than 30 albums that often defied genres, yet were still critically acclaimed. But for his latest Blue Note Records album, Breathless, Blanchard powerfully and playfully journeys into another jazz realm with his new quintet, The E-Collective-an exciting zone of grooved fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors.

Tickets for Terence Blanchard on May 2nd are $45.00 for General Seating and $55.00 for Premium Seating.  The doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the shows start at 9:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.LePetitTheatre.com.

NEW ORLEANS MUSICA DA CAMERA 2015

49th Continuous Season of Early Music Concerts

ALL CONCERTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE

New Orleans Musica da Camera is the oldest surviving early music organization in the country, founded in 1966 by director Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr. Researching and performing the music of the 10th through 16th centuries, the group is dedicated to making that music current and living for the listeners of the 21st century. Using historically informed performance techniques and reproductions of period instruments (many built by Scheuermann), they also use their own musical transcriptions from original manuscript sources. The ensemble performs in the culturally diverse neighborhoods in and around the Crescent City and throughout the Gulf South, presenting a variety of performances, lectures and workshops. Vox Femin?, the women's vocal ensemble of Musica da Camera, was founded in 1994 by St. Julien. This ensemble focuses on medieval songs and chant, with a special interest in music by or about women.

Saints Logo 2011

The New Orleans Saints kicked off their offseason training program Monday with the start of team-organized weightlifting and conditioning programs. On-field practice sessions will start with the rookie minicamp May 15-17. Then the first full-team practices will start May 26. Here's the schedule:

Rookie minicamp: May 15-17

OTAs (organized team activities): May 26-28, June 2-4, June 8-11

Veteran minicamp: June 16-18

Typically, selected minicamp practices are the only ones open to the public, though the Saints have not yet announced any fan availability. Training camp is expected to return to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia in late July, though training camp dates have not yet been announced.

New Orleans Saints Preseason:
In their four-game 2015 preseason schedule, three of the New Orleans Saints' opponents will be from the AFC, while all four posted winning records in 2014.

The Saints will kick off their 2015 preseason when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. This will be the second consecutive year that New Orleans will face Baltimore in the preseason. In addition to hosting the Ravens in a 22-13 preseason loss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on August 28, 2014, the Saints later dropped a 34-27 home decision to Baltimore on November 24. This will be the first time the Saints play at the Ravens in the preseason. Baltimore holds a 2-0 advantage in the preseason series.

The following week, the Saints will host the New England Patriots in the home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. It will mark the first time that the Saints have hosted the Super Bowl XLIX Champions in the preseason since 1986 and the first time the Saints play a defending Super Bowl champion in the preseason since they played at the Patriots in 2005. New England holds a 6-4 edge in the preseason series.

New Orleans will then host the Houston Texans on Sunday, August 30 in a nationally televised contest on FOX. Kickoff is 3 p.m. CT. The Saints have posted a 4-3 preseason record against the Texans, having faced them in exhibitions in six consecutive years from 2008-13. The Saints are also scheduled to play the Texans in the regular season at NRG Park.

New Orleans will wrap up its preseason slate in Green Bay. The Saints and Packers have not faced each other in the preseason since 2004, a game which was also played at Lambeau Field. New Orleans defeated Green Bay 44-23 on October 26, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last meeting. This year's contest will be the ninth preseason meeting between the two teams, with the Packers holding a 6-2 edge.

The NFL announced the 2015 regular season schedule Tuesday and the New Orleans Saints will be featured in at least three prime time nationally-televised games during the regular season, all of them at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Saints will also open on the road for the second consecutive season, when they play the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13 (3:05 CT) at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Saints will make their prime time debut in 2015 on NBC's Sunday Night Football when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 4 (7:30 p.m. CT). The Saints' slot on the NFL's Thursday night package, broadcast by CBS and the NFL Network will take place when they host a Thursday night contest for the first time since the 2010 league opener, as they play the Atlanta Falcons on October 15 (7:25 p.m. CT). New Orleans' final prime time contest will take place when they host Detroit on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT).

Six of the Saints' 16 games will be against teams that finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in 2014, with games against five playoff opponents - Arizona, Carolina, Dallas, Detroit and Indianapolis. New Orleans will play each of their NFC South rivals twice and will play one game each against each of the NFC East and AFC South teams.

The Saints will open the season with two of their first three games on the road. After kicking off the regular season at the Cardinals, they will then open up their NFC South slate when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20 (noon, CT). New Orleans will then travel to Bank of America Stadium to face the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27 (noon, CT) to close out the month of September.

After hosting the Cowboys on Oct. 4, The Saints will then travel to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 11 (noon, CT), followed by a short week for the Thursday night game against Atlanta. New Orleans will close out their October slate on Oct. 25 (noon, CT), when they play their first AFC South opponent of the season, the Indianapolis Colts, at Lucas Oil Stadium.

To open November, a month where the Saints have posted an 18-6 mark since 2009, New Orleans will host the New York Giants at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Nov. 1 (noon, CT). New Orleans then hosts the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 8, followed by a road matchup at the Washington Redskins (noon, CT) on Nov. 15. The Saints will then enjoy a week 11 bye. The only other time since the NFL instituted its bye system in 1990 that the Saints had a week 11 bye was in 2011. New Orleans will then travel to NRG Stadium to play the Houston Texans on Nov. 29 (noon, CT).

In the final five weeks of the season, New Orleans will play each of their three NFC South rivals once, starting when they host the Panthers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Dec. 6 (noon, CT), followed by a road contest at Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 13 to face the Buccaneers (noon, CT). The Saints will host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT) followed by a home contest on Dec. 27 vs. Jacksonville (noon, CT). The regular season finale will take place at the Georgia Dome on Jan. 3 (noon, CT), when New Orleans plays Atlanta.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
