A Speedy Recovery: Coastal partnership completes planting of 10,000 trees in the month of April

Maurepas, LA - Last month, 10,000 trees were planted on private land owned by Stinking Bayou LLC on the Maurepas Land bridge near Middle Bayou. The planting was completed with two, week-long plantings of 5,000 trees per week. The project is the result of a collaborative partnership between Restore the Earth Foundation (REF), Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) and Resource Environmental Solutions (RES).

Over the past seven years, REF, and LPBF have been working together and partnering with RES to accomplish meaningful coastal forest and wetland restoration by planting and monitoring trees in critical sites in coastal Louisiana. REF has provided the funding to RES for the propagation, growth and planting of trees for reforestation. RES is a certified grown of EKOgrown® native trees using REF's specifications, the trees are grown at has RES' nursery in Montegut, Louisiana., creating jobs and keeping funding in the community. LPBF has been responsible for identifying and assessing each site and will be tracking and monitoring the trees to collect scientific data.

"We were very excited to secure permission to plant on this land from Stinking Bayou," says Dr. Theryn Henkel "After we presented the project to the landowner, they were eager to get started which allowed us to expedite the process and deploy the first 5,000 trees very quickly. It is in a very strategic location on the Maurepas land bridge and has the potential to enhance storm surge protection in the region."

The Maurepas Land bridge was historically covered in healthy swamp forest. In the late 1800's and early 1900's the area was clear-cut as the logging industry boomed and swampland that was deemed unsuitable for cultivation was sold for 25¢ to 50¢ per acre. While there was some natural second growth in the region, the introduction of the nutria, subsidence, levees and saltwater intrusion prevented large-scale regeneration.

"We hope that more property owners in coastal Louisiana become aware of the great restoration projects that are possible on their land, especially in these delicate coastal areas," said Aaron Pierce, Nursery/Coastal Restoration Manager for RES. "In spreading the word of the restoration, mitigation and carbon offset opportunities of these projects I truly believe we could gain access to critical tracts of land that is prime for projects."

"This project is significant to us because it represents the potential coastal restoration projects have when great partners come together to over come obstacles and barriers," says P.J. Marshall, Co-Founder and Executive Director of REF. "We look forward to continuing projects with this kind of collaboration and team work."

Each tree was also provided with a nutria protector , which will ensure that trees will not be disturbed by wildlife during the growing process.

Here are four political battles the tourism industry is gearing up to fight.

1. Keeping state police in downtown New Orleans.

Perry called the city's effort to improve and appropriately staff the New Orleans Police Department a "long-term issue." For now, he said funding is necessary to keep state troopers in the city as backup.

The so-called "Quarter for the Quarter" proposal Mayor Mitch Landrieu has pitched would levy a quarter-cent sales tax hike to keep state troopers in the historic neighborhood. The tax, combined with matching funds from the private sector, could generate up to $4.5 million to keep 45 troopers in the French Quarter in the near-term.

Police associations have called for that money to be spent instead on strengthening the city police department.

The tax hike is set to appear on the October election ballot.

2. Better French Quarter streets and sidewalks.

The French Quarter has long been the focus of efforts to improve New Orleans tourism. That is unlikely to change in coming years.

"I don't think anyone in the country loves a piece of ground as much as we love the Quarter," Perry said.

The city completed French Quarter street and sidewalk repairs, lighting improvements and other upgrades in late 2013, part of a $6.5 million downtown infrastructure improvement partnership with the Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority.

Perry said more money is needed to keep the Quarter clean, improve sidewalks and upkeep buildings.

3. Continued upgrades to city cabs.

Perry did not openly endorse Uber and other ride-hailing services vying to build a presence in the New Orleans market, but he said transportation options should include "non-traditional" cab services that "bring the city into the 21st century."

The City Council approved ride-hailing services for operation in New Orleans last month. But officials with Uber and Lyft have said insurance requirements and limits on driver contracts could make it tough for their businesses to compete.

4. Fighting for more international flights.

A group of New Orleans business leaders traveled to London earlier this year to talk with major airlines about regular international flights between Louis Armstrong International Airport and Europe. Perry noted negotiations are ongoing with British Airways for a direct flight from London to New Orleans.

Local business leaders have indicated the state may need to offer economic incentives to airlines in order to close deals on direct flights.

Open House and Surprise Kid's Event
4-5PM

Stop by the Museum Tuesday, May 5 from 4-5PM to check out our new exhibits and get your child involved in a quick surprise activity. We're opening our doors for a visit for GiveNOLA Day on Tuesday, a day we're usually closed. GiveNOLA Day, hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, is a 24-hour online giving event that lets everyone be a philanthropist by making a donation as small as $10.

SoFAB/Southern Food and Beverage Museum raised over $5000 last year from our generous friends. This year, we'd like to reach a new goal of $10,000, with your help. Board members are matching up to $10,000, so your donation goes even further to help support our fabulous new Museum space and programs, particularly our popular Kids Menu programs. $10 buys a kid's cookbook! RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Between some of our wonderful urban farmers from Vintage Garden Farms, Port St. Garden and Farm, and Grow Dat Youth Farm, all four of our markets are well stocked with all kinds of fresh herbs. Swing by market, pick some up, and try your own version of this Herb Salad recipe from Emeril Lagasse's cookbook, Farm to Fork: Cooking Local, Cooking Fresh.

 Herb Salad

A perfectly lovely herb salad from Emeril Lagasse's newest cookbook, Farm to Fork: Cooking Local, Cooking Fresh.

3 tablespoons 1- inch-long snipped chives

3 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves

3 tablespoons fresh mint or tarragon leaves

3 tablespoons roughly chopped fresh basil leaves

1 ½ tablespoons minced shallot

1 ½ teaspoons finely grated lemon zest

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

4 tablespoons canola or other vegetable oil

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper

One 12-ounce head red or green leaf lettuce, or a mix, rinsed and spun dry, and torn into bite-size pieces

2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped

2 tablespoons nonpareil capers, drained

2 tablespoons finely grated ricotta salata

Combine all the herbs (there should be a generous ¾ cup total) and set aside in a small bowl.

In another bowl, add the shallot, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Slowly whisk in both oils to form a vinaigrette. Add ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper, and set aside.

Combine the lettuce, herbs, eggs, and capers in a medium bowl. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Stir the vinaigrette and add 4 tablespoons. Toss gently. Divide the salad among six serving plates or transfer it to a serving bowl. Garnish with the cheese, and

drizzle with more vinaigrette as desired.

Makes 6 servings

Apple Watch

&

Shear Estate Sale

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the last meeting we discussed what type of meetings were member favorites. Unanimously the group stated that they really enjoyed the Apple "Keynote" product introductions shown on our big ten foot projection screen. Even though these presentations can be watched on your computer screen, members agreed that these presentations just don't have the impact we get watching them in larger than life format on our big screen.

At this meeting we will show the Apple Watch Keynote Address lead by Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Since I am closing my store and moving my business back into my home, Briann and I have decided to hold an estate sale at the store on Shores Drive throughout May. Briann's parnets and my mother passed away recently. Besides the few computers and furniture Shear Systems has left, we are also moving items from our estates to the store to be "liquidated." We will do this until we close the store on May 31st or when everything is sold - whichever comes first. You will be able to browse the estate items at the meeting.  We are also giving away older versions of popular software as well as books and other items.

This will be the last meeting held at my store on Shores Drive. After this we will meet at my house on Page Drive or at Lakeside Camera's meeting office. Watch future notices for meeting details.

NOTE:

Shear Systems will continue to offer Macintosh consulting, support, data recovery and repair services

AND

Shear Systems will continue to be authorized dealers for Adobe Creative Cloud software & licenses, Xerox color printers, Promise Pegasus2 RAID Storage devices, Synology NAT devices, Epson Pro Projectors, Samsung monitors and TV sets, Marantz & Denon AV Receivers and many other products like routers, switches and backup devices, etc.

TIME: Tuesday, 6:30 PM

Goodwill Agencies across the Nation Celebrate

Goodwill Week, May 5-9

Week-long activities to take place locally

NEW ORLEANS - For the last 51 years during the first full week of May, Goodwill agencies across the United States and Canada celebrate the power of work through local events and awareness efforts. This year, Goodwill Week is recognized May 5-9 and dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana's (Goodwill) job training, career and other community-based services that help people find jobs, earn paychecks and strengthen their families and communities.  Last year, Goodwill served 3,438 people and placed 279 individuals into competitive employment.

"We could not carry out our mission without the continued support of our community," says William L. Jessee, president of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana.  "We thank the thousands of people throughout Southeastern Louisiana who clean out their closets for the benefit of Goodwill, the shoppers who visit our retail stores, the businesses who hire Goodwill graduates, and our staff who dedicate themselves to helping people overcome barriers to employment. We ask everyone for their continued support. Together we are changing lives of thousands of people annually through the power of work."

Whether a person needs a gentle push to help them along their road to independence, or a guiding hand through the entire process, Goodwill programs are designed to meet the needs of disadvantaged job seekers who need help. In addition to job training and employment programs, Goodwill offers life and job readiness skills as part of its holistic approach to giving people a hand up, not a hand out.

"Many of our participants are faced with homelessness, literacy issues and other social ills that affect their success and employment. At Goodwill, we provide wrap-around services to help address these barriers," said Kim Rugon, Ph.D., vice president of workforce development and mission services for Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana.

In order to serve even more people in the community, Goodwill is opening the Goodwill Career & Technical College (GCTC) which specializes in helping vulnerable populations receive industry certifications and skills in high-demand local industries.

Opening in August at 3400 Tulane Avenue in Mid City New Orleans, GCTC will offer affordable career training and industry based certifications in Broadband Technology (CTECH), START (Hospitality and Tourism), Microsoft Office Technology and Digital Literacy.

Other Good News & Community Awareness Initiatives this Week:

  • A television advertising campaign for Goodwill retail stores launches on May 5, featuring "the Goodwill Guy," a successful advertising character developed by the Indianapolis Goodwill. The spots illustrate Goodwill's mission behind the brand, encourage donating goods and shopping Goodwill for treasures. It is one of several Goodwill Guy commercials which will run for the remainder of 2015 on several cable news channels, including Bravo!, Food, HGTV, and other local networks.
  • A separate, #GoodwillFashionFinds campaign, targeted to female millennials to dispel misperceptions about shopping at Goodwill, launches on digital media channels and will give online supporters an opportunity to win prizes in the #GoodwillFashionFinds contest at Facebook/com/GoodwillIndustriesSELA.
  • On Wednesday, May 6, Goodwill will host a career fair for its participants to provide mock interviews and employment opportunities with several New Orleans employers.  By invitation only.
  • As part of its sustainability efforts, Goodwill is launching a corporate e-waste recycling program, providing businesses with an environmentally responsible and FREE solution to recycling unwanted electronics.
  • On Thursday, May, 7, Goodwill will cohost the Chamber of Commerce's Women's Business Alliance event from 5:00-7:00 at Hotel Storyville.

For more information about these and other Goodwill programs, services and initiatives, please contact Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana at:  504-456-3926 or visit the website at:  www.goodwillno.org

Author Event! The Darkness Survives by Sally Michelle Jackson
Napoleon Room, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie

Sally Michelle Jackson Talks About Her New Book:

The Darkness Survives - Second in the Heilsing Cases Series

METAIRIE, LA - Sally Michelle Jackson, a local author and musician, will discuss her new book, The Darkness Survives (The Heilsing Cases, Volume Two) at 7 p.m. on Tuessday, May 5at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required. Members of the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library will be present to sell copies of the book to those who would like to buy them.

In The Darkness Survives (The Heilsing Cases, Volume Two), Hank Heilsing, a paranormal investigator, and his new bride go to New Orleans for their honeymoon but soon after their arrival, a few "incidents" require that the whole team assemble in the Crescent City. They discover that though New Orleans is a tourist mecca with swamp tours being considered to be great fun, "it takes on a different feel when you are touring on foot through a restricted area battling with a deranged adversary, his henchmen and a swamp creature or two."

The first novel in this series is A Darker Side of the Light (The Heilsing Cases, Volume One).

The central character - Paranormal Investigator Hank Heilsing - is (a friend refers to him as a con man who played at investigating his caseload) admits that he takes cases, does minimal legwork to solve them, and does little more than reassure the client that "everything is all right." And then one night, he finds himself investigating a real case and it changes his life.

Sally Michelle Jackson says she is an average professional musician, photographer and author making her living in retail sales. She says she reads books for pure enjoyment and she writes them because she might have something to say.

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, manager of Adult Programming for the library, at (504) 889-8143 or [email protected].

Boz Scaggs

LIVE IN CONCERT

AT THE

BATON ROUGE RIVER CENTER THEATER

THIS WEDNESDAY

 MAY 6TH

After learning guitar at the age of 12, William Royce Scaggs, better known as Boz Scaggs met Steve Miller. Scaggs would become the vocalist for Miller's band, The Marksmen. In 1976, Boz hooked up with session musicians who would later form the group Toto. They recorded the smash hit album Silk Degrees. The album reached number 2 on the U.S. charts and number 1 in a number of countries across the world, spawning three hit singles: "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", and "What Can I Say", as well as the standard "We're All Alone".

"I'm at a point where I'm having a lot of fun with music, more than ever," Boz Scaggs says about his spellbinding new album, A Fool to Care. "It's like I'm just going wherever I want to go with it." The inspirational heart of those songs lies in the sounds of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma that played such a vital role in shaping Scaggs' musical sensibility, beginning with the seductive New Orleans rumble of the title track.

Music Box Roving Village in City Park

The musical shantytown

The Music Box Roving Village: City Park will host concerts with the houses serving as the orchestra. Its  performances are 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The bright, intricate nests made by bowerbirds inspired Ross Harmon and Frank Pahl's shack, surrounded with heavy chimes tuned to different scales. The inside is completely covered in mosaic mirrors.

Callie Curry (aka Swoon) collaborated with New Orleans blacksmith Darryl Reeves on a gazebo-like structure, detailed with lattice-like brass cuttings and Reeves' brass instruments twisted into the house's frame. A pneumatic switchboard in the center controls the horns

A tall windmill-inspired silo topped with tubes and metal shaped into musical ceiling fans. Slowly pull a rope from the ornate pulley system inside the house and you'll hear the tubes catch air as they turn into resonating chambers bellowing slightly dissonant tones.

"We'll probably have only heard our instruments playing together for the first time the day before, "It'll be sunset when people first arrive. We want them to feel like they've entered an enchanted world. They'll come in, find these musical houses, find their seats - they'll be all over the place - and we'll have a concert that we have no idea what it will sound like."

Saints Logo 2011

The New Orleans Saints kicked off their offseason training program Monday with the start of team-organized weightlifting and conditioning programs. On-field practice sessions will start with the rookie minicamp May 15-17. Then the first full-team practices will start May 26. Here's the schedule:

Rookie minicamp: May 15-17

OTAs (organized team activities): May 26-28, June 2-4, June 8-11

Veteran minicamp: June 16-18

Typically, selected minicamp practices are the only ones open to the public, though the Saints have not yet announced any fan availability. Training camp is expected to return to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia in late July, though training camp dates have not yet been announced.

New Orleans Saints Preseason:
In their four-game 2015 preseason schedule, three of the New Orleans Saints' opponents will be from the AFC, while all four posted winning records in 2014.

The Saints will kick off their 2015 preseason when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. This will be the second consecutive year that New Orleans will face Baltimore in the preseason. In addition to hosting the Ravens in a 22-13 preseason loss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on August 28, 2014, the Saints later dropped a 34-27 home decision to Baltimore on November 24. This will be the first time the Saints play at the Ravens in the preseason. Baltimore holds a 2-0 advantage in the preseason series.

The following week, the Saints will host the New England Patriots in the home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. It will mark the first time that the Saints have hosted the Super Bowl XLIX Champions in the preseason since 1986 and the first time the Saints play a defending Super Bowl champion in the preseason since they played at the Patriots in 2005. New England holds a 6-4 edge in the preseason series.

New Orleans will then host the Houston Texans on Sunday, August 30 in a nationally televised contest on FOX. Kickoff is 3 p.m. CT. The Saints have posted a 4-3 preseason record against the Texans, having faced them in exhibitions in six consecutive years from 2008-13. The Saints are also scheduled to play the Texans in the regular season at NRG Park.

New Orleans will wrap up its preseason slate in Green Bay. The Saints and Packers have not faced each other in the preseason since 2004, a game which was also played at Lambeau Field. New Orleans defeated Green Bay 44-23 on October 26, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last meeting. This year's contest will be the ninth preseason meeting between the two teams, with the Packers holding a 6-2 edge.

The NFL announced the 2015 regular season schedule Tuesday and the New Orleans Saints will be featured in at least three prime time nationally-televised games during the regular season, all of them at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Saints will also open on the road for the second consecutive season, when they play the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13 (3:05 CT) at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Saints will make their prime time debut in 2015 on NBC's Sunday Night Football when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 4 (7:30 p.m. CT). The Saints' slot on the NFL's Thursday night package, broadcast by CBS and the NFL Network will take place when they host a Thursday night contest for the first time since the 2010 league opener, as they play the Atlanta Falcons on October 15 (7:25 p.m. CT). New Orleans' final prime time contest will take place when they host Detroit on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT).

Six of the Saints' 16 games will be against teams that finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in 2014, with games against five playoff opponents - Arizona, Carolina, Dallas, Detroit and Indianapolis. New Orleans will play each of their NFC South rivals twice and will play one game each against each of the NFC East and AFC South teams.

The Saints will open the season with two of their first three games on the road. After kicking off the regular season at the Cardinals, they will then open up their NFC South slate when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20 (noon, CT). New Orleans will then travel to Bank of America Stadium to face the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27 (noon, CT) to close out the month of September.

After hosting the Cowboys on Oct. 4, The Saints will then travel to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 11 (noon, CT), followed by a short week for the Thursday night game against Atlanta. New Orleans will close out their October slate on Oct. 25 (noon, CT), when they play their first AFC South opponent of the season, the Indianapolis Colts, at Lucas Oil Stadium.

To open November, a month where the Saints have posted an 18-6 mark since 2009, New Orleans will host the New York Giants at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Nov. 1 (noon, CT). New Orleans then hosts the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 8, followed by a road matchup at the Washington Redskins (noon, CT) on Nov. 15. The Saints will then enjoy a week 11 bye. The only other time since the NFL instituted its bye system in 1990 that the Saints had a week 11 bye was in 2011. New Orleans will then travel to NRG Stadium to play the Houston Texans on Nov. 29 (noon, CT).

In the final five weeks of the season, New Orleans will play each of their three NFC South rivals once, starting when they host the Panthers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Dec. 6 (noon, CT), followed by a road contest at Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 13 to face the Buccaneers (noon, CT). The Saints will host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT) followed by a home contest on Dec. 27 vs. Jacksonville (noon, CT). The regular season finale will take place at the Georgia Dome on Jan. 3 (noon, CT), when New Orleans plays Atlanta.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
