New Orleans household count close to pre-Katrina levels

According to Allison Plyer of the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, the city is just under 10 percent from a complete recovery.

''The city had about 200,000 households receiving mail (before Katrina), and we now have nearly 182,000... or about 90% percent," said Plyer.

Plyer added, ''Looking at the households that are receiving mail month by month, we can see neighborhoods repopulating and recovering.''

Plyer says since of  June 2010, the number of households receiving mail increased by 19,651  and  65 out of 72 neighborhoods experiencing some level of gains.

Some 16 neighborhoods have actually exceeded those pre-Katrina numbers while 40 of the city's 72 neighborhoods have climbed back to 90 percent of the population they had before the storm.

Census figures show the eight parish area has seen St. Tammany, St. Charles, St. James and St. John growing since the storm.  Jefferson is about where it was before Katrina.  Plaquemines, St. Bernard and New Orleans are smaller.

NEW ORLEANS AGAIN RANKS AS TOP METROPOLITAN AREA FOR EXPORTS

Registers Fifth Consecutive Year of Increased Goods Exports

NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Department of Commerce said this week that goods and exports from the New Orleans-Metairie, La., metropolitan area reached a record $34.9 billion last year, ranking eighth in the nation. New Orleans goods exports increased by $4.9 billion, or 16.2 percent, from 2013 to 2014, helping New Orleans to remain a top metropolitan area for exports in 2014. The findings were part of the International Trade Administration's 2014 Metropolitan Area Export Overview released this week highlighting goods and exports from U.S. metropolitan areas in 2014.

"New Orleans is on a roll, and this news is yet another indication of our continued growth that includes a strong export industry," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "With the recent attraction and expansion of local and international companies operating at the Port of New Orleans and throughout our city, we have turbocharged our growth and job creation efforts. We will continue to push full steam ahead to make New Orleans stronger and more resilient for every family."

"More and more U.S. businesses understand that 96 percent of their potential customers live outside the United States, and that selling their world-class goods in the global marketplace is critical to their bottom line," said U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker. "New high-standard trade agreements are one way the Obama Administration is working to help open more markets for U.S. companies. We remain focused on helping to increase the number of companies that take advantage of these exporting opportunities, creating jobs and strengthening both the local New Orleans and national economy."

According to the report, the New Orleans metropolitan area in 2014:

*             Registered a fifth consecutive year of increased goods exports;

*             One of 139 metro areas to achieve record goods export levels;

*             New Orleans sent 32.4 percent of its goods exports to markets where the United States has trade agreements;

*             Key merchandise export categories included petroleum and coal products, agricultural products, processed foods, chemicals, and beverage and tobacco products; and,

*             China, Mexico, France, Colombia, and the Netherlands were leading destinations for New Orleans' goods exports.

New Orleans Business Alliance President and CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr., sad, "While New Orleans' maritime industry may always not seem visible to the general public, this ranking affirms the outsized impact of the spirit of collaboration among the talented team at the Port of New Orleans, the incomparable logistics and warehousing firms, shipyards, maritime law firms and transportation companies, and many others that work and support this sector. Their global reach carries with it the momentum of our economic growth and will help us attract new foreign direct investment. We congratulate them on all this achievement."

In the ten years since Hurricane Katrina, the Port of New Orleans has overcome great obstacles. Initially, the Port reopened to commerce just 12 days after the storm to prove to the world that New Orleans and south Louisiana mattered and was open for business. In the years that followed, Port activity has reached new highs, nearing the half million mark for containers handled, surpassing the one-million-passenger threshold in the city's cruise industry, setting a 14-year high in tonnage handled, and re-imagining the more than 1,000 acres of industrial property into a center for logistics, staging and warehousing of cargo.

Since Katrina, the Board has invested $296.3 million in capital expenditures in the last decade. Those investments include terminal expansions, completely renovated transit sheds, upgraded infrastructure and new state-of-the-industry cruise terminals.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Market is full of all types of beautiful eggplant right now. There are so many ways to prepare this versatile fruit, but nothing seems to beat the combination of eggplant and marinara. Check out this Sicilian Eggplant recipe courtesy of Chef Duke LoCicero and get cookin!

Grandpa's Sicilian Eggplant

When visitors hear about New Orleans' huge Sicilian immigrant population that dates back to the late 1800s, they often ask, "Where's the New Orleans 'Little Italy'?" Back in the day, nearly every New Orleans neighborhood was a Little Italy with an Italian grocer on the corner influencing French Creole, German and Irish shoppers. Chef Duke LoCicero remembers his Sicilian grandpa with this dish.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 eggplants (medium to large), peeled and then cut into small cubes
  • 2 medium red onions, diced small
  • 2 large bulbs garlic, roasted
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 2 cups sliced black ripe olives
  • 1-1/2 cups sliced fresh basil
  • 1 cup sliced green olives
  • 1 cup diced pimientos
  • 1 cup sweet Marsala wine
  • 1/2 cup capers
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon anchovies, puréed
  • 1/4 tablespoon crushed dried red pepper
Directions

Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Add eggplant, onions, and garlic; sauté over low to medium heat until eggplant is tender. Add all remaining ingredients-marinara sauce, black olives, basil, green olives, pimientos, wine, capers, sugar, vinegar, anchovies, and crushed red pepper-and mix well. Continue to sauté until 80 percent of the liquid is gone. Remove from heat, cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for 6 hours.

Serve hot or cold, with grilled seafood or meat. This dish can be used many ways, including with pasta.

Serves 8-10

New Orleans, LA

WHO:     Mayor Mitch Landrieu

SCHEDULE OF COMMUNITY MEETINGS

New Orleans, LA - On Tues., July 14, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Councilmember Nadine Ramsey will host a community meeting in City Council District C to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2016 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders.

The goal of the budgeting for outcomes process is to produce a more resident-driven budget and ensure process improvement and accountability of government performance. This national best practice is designed to enhance services and get a better return on investment of public dollars by encouraging City agencies to invest public resources based on the results residents and City leaders want to achieve. While traditional budgeting systems are hinged on incremental changes to the previous year's level of effort, budgeting for outcomes ensures that all City budgets are funded based on how well they achieve residents' priorities. This year, Spanish interpretation will be available for Spanish-speaking residents.

Before the district meeting, City officials will also host a resource center from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. where residents may visit one-on-one with representatives from several City departments and agencies to address specific complaints and concerns.  The meeting will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.  Residents who cannot attend community meetings are invited to share their comments and input by sending e-mail to [email protected].

If you know someone who's going, you can let them know that I'll be playing my set Friday, July 31 between noon and 4 pm. I might get some other opportunities to shine then as well.

Wednesday, July 15, 6-8pm - Cru Artisan Wines with Jacob Gragg

Sommelier Jacob Gragg will be in the house presenting four wines from the Cru Artisan portfolio of small production Italian wines.  Jacob earned his Advanced Sommelier from the Court of Master Sommeliers at the age of 24, making him one of the youngest to have achieved this certification. In addition, he is a Certified Specialist of Wine, and in 2012 was named one of the Best New Sommeliers by Wine and Spirits Magazine.  We are excited to have him in the store on July 15 and look forward to tasting his selections.  If you miss him this week, you can catch him next month as he will be our guest Sommelier for our Somm's Pick tasting in August!

Champagne Education Series Class 3 June 16th with Dr. Michael Knisley

Dr. Michael Knisley packed the house again last week with his class on my personal favorites, Blanc de Blancs! His next class, Pinots - Noir & Meunier, is coming up quickly so if you'd like a spot, act fast!  Accounting for almost ¾ of the grapes planted in the Champagne region, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier provide the body and brawn to go along with Chardonnay's elegance. Wines made solely from these grapes are referred to as Blanc de Noirs, as well as certain styles of rose champagne.

So this week we'll be pouring all French wines at the bar in honor of Bastille Day, tasting Italian during our Wednesday Nite Flites and drinking fabulous bubbly Thursday with Dr. Michael Knisley's Champagne class.  We'll finish off the tastings with Jen Pomeranke pouring something delicious for our Friday Free For All.   Sounds like a perfect week!  Scroll down for more info on all events!

"All Hail the Cocktail" at the Round Table Luncheon
Wednesday, July 15 at 12 Noon

New Orleans, LA -We're getting into the spirit for the 13th Annual Tales of the Cocktail when the art of a good cocktail reigns over the Big Easy. On Wednesday July 15 at 12 noon, the Round Table Luncheon will shake it up when talented mixologists and industry professionals share a peek inside the world's premier event devoted to bartenders and their art.

Hosted by social columnist and bon vivant, Margarita Bergen, in historic Antoine's Restaurant, the popular luncheon promises lively discussion, delicious cuisine and flowing champagne with plenty of surprises!

Founder and Executive Director of Tales of the Cocktail -- "Mrs. Cocktail" herself -- Ann Tuennerman will kick things off by divulging insider tips on what to look for in this year's programming.

For entertainment, guests will enjoy a live performance from talented pianist/vocalist Giselle Bonfaire and cocktail historian Elizabeth Pearce, who will prepare a special cocktail using Herbsaint. The $45, all-inclusive package includes a 3-course meal, a glass of champagne and a glass of wine with the meal (tax and gratuities also included).

All Tales of the Cocktail® 2015 attendees are welcome to join Ann and Paul Tuennerman on the steps of the Hotel Monteleone for the first official event of Tales of the Cocktail® 2015: Toast to Tales. On Wednesday, July 15th at 2 p.m., Ann and Paul will kick off the festivities with a series of special announcements, including the exciting addition of a new cocktail festival to Tales of the Cocktail's year-round events. Toast to Tales attendees will have the opportunity to secure a token to sample the official cocktail of the 13th Annual Tales of the Cocktail®, the Desert Lilly created by Spencer Warren from Butcher and the Rye in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"Toast to Tales is one of my favorite events because it means after an entire year of planning, Tales of the Cocktail is finally here," said Ann Tuennerman, Founder of Tales of the Cocktail®. "With the great drinks we're serving and all the special announcements we have, this is not an event you want to miss."

At Toast to Tales, attendees will be the first to learn details about the new TalesoftheCocktail.com. In its on-going efforts to support and grow the spirits industry all year long, Tales of the Cocktail® will be re-launching its website as a hub of cocktail insights and ideas with rich content tailored towards bartenders and other spirits professionals. During Toast to Tales, Ann will share even more of what people can expect when the new TalesoftheCocktail.com launches in August 2015.

As was the case in years past, the New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society (NOCCPS) will recognize the latest recipients of the Seal of the Sazerac at Toast to Tales. Founded in 2010, this program seeks to honor those bars and restaurants that are committed to preserving the Sazerac by strictly adhering to the historic drink's traditional ingredients, preparation and presentation. This year, five new restaurants will join the list of more than 25 establishments that have met the stringent requirements to receive the Seal of the Sazerac. The 2015 Seal of the Sazerac honorees are Barrel Proof's Liam Deegan, Brennan's Joe Billesbach, CelllarDoor's Gregory Gremillion, Doris Metropolitan's Ryan O'Dwyer and Konrad Kantor, Tréo's Tyler Chauvin, and Winston's Pub & Patio's Stephen Joseph.

During Toast to Tales, Ann and Paul will also introduce the 2015 Tales of the Cocktail® Ambassadors, Jeff Berry and Annene Kaye, also known as "Mr. and Mrs. Bum". The first couple of Tiki have been long-time supporters of Tales of the Cocktail® whether its been leading seminars, judging competitions and Spirited Awards® or adding to the New Orleans bar scene with their acclaimed Latitude 29. The Ambassador program was founded in 2008 to recognize professionals or enthusiasts for their commitment to Tales of the Cocktail® and to the greater cocktail and culinary communities. The Ambassadors serve for one year, representing Tales of the Cocktail® during that time.

"Annene and I are honored to be selected as this year's Tales of the Cocktail ambassadors," said Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Tiki expert and 2015 Tales of the Cocktail® Ambassador. "This festival has done so much for us. It's given me so many venues to share my ideas on our craft. It made us fall in love with New Orleans. We're excited to do our part in representing Tales of the Cocktail over the next year."

We will end the Toast to Tales with 170 celebratory shots of Fernet-Branca to toast the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the Fratelli Branca Distillery. Toast to Tales is the first of more than 200 events when Tales of the Cocktail® returns to New Orleans, July 15-21, 2015. For more information about all the week's events visit

The Importance of Being Earnest opens

The Festival presents Oscar Wilde's comedic masterpiece July 12-25.

or call (504) 865-5106

Unequivocally one of the funniest satires ever written, The Importance of Being Earnest follows two bachelors leading double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew.  New Orleans to host Major League Gaming finals

New Orleans has finally snagged another Superbowl ... for video gamers, at least.

Major League Gaming has announced that the city will be the home of the MLG World Finals, which will take place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

It's the championship for the longest-running eSports league in the world. Participants will be competing for more than $500,000 during the 3-day event.

It's also been a coveted event for the city. For eight months, Greater New Orleans, Inc. worked with the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, the convention center and the New Orleans Business Alliance to land the MLG World Finals.

Melissa Ehlinger, interim CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance, said the "decision affirms the strength of the New Orleans digital media landscape and signals the growing reputation the city enjoys as a gaming hub."

The championship will be hosted Oct. 18 in the convention center's theater. For more information and to purchase tickets visitwww.majorleaguegaming.com/finals.
