Frogs exhibit and Discovery Trail opens at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans

Audubon Zoo in New Orleans recently raised the curtain on two new attractions: one that transports visitors to an exotic foreign land and another that offers an up-close-and-personal look at frogs, some of the most diverse and unusual creatures on earth.

Frogs! Beyond Green and Bambu Village Asian Discovery Trail both debuted in July .

Frogs! Beyond Green, located in the Diefenthal Earth Lab near the Zoo's entrance, is a tribute to the incredibly adaptable amphibians that have found ways to thrive in some of the harshest habitats on the planet - from the icy Arctic Circle to the barren deserts of Australia.

Bambu Village Asian Discovery Trail, which has undergone a makeover in recent months, is the signature educational component of a redesigned Asian Exhibit that soon will house several new attractions, beginning with a new home for the Zoo's orangutan collection and a greatly expanded elephant habitat.

The Frogs! Beyond Green collection is extensive and includes: pleasing dart frogs and terrible dart frogs from Columbia and Peru, clawed frogs from West Africa, red-eyed leaf frogs from Central America and fire belly toads from China, among others.

Frogs! Beyond Green is a traveling exhibit produced by the Audubon Nature Institute that has visited several cities over the past decade, including Cincinnati;, Salt Lake City; Santa Barbara; Dubuque, Iowa; Jackson, Miss.; and Mobile, Ala.

Assessor: Rolls Open From  July 17 to Monday, August 17

Fourth Location to Open in N.O. East; Online Appeals to be Accepted Wednesday, July 22 - Thursday, August 20

New Orleans property owners who wish to discuss the taxable assessment on their property with the Assessor's Office may do so during the Open Rolls period, said Orleans Parish Assessor Erroll Williams. The tax rolls will be open weekdays beginning Wednesday, July 15, 2015, to Monday, August 17, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Property owners may visit any of the Office's four locations:

City Hall

1300 Perdido Street

4th Floor

Algiers Courthouse

225 Morgan Street

1st Floor

 Lakeview Christian Center,

 5885 Fleur De Lis Drive

2nd Floor

(July 15 -Aug. 17 ONLY)

***NEW***

New Orleans East Satellite

5555 Bullard Avenue

Suite 103

(July 15 -Aug. 17 ONLY)

Visiting with the Assessor's Office at one of the locations above is regarded as an "Informal Appeal." Property owners may bypass this step and file a "Formal Appeal" with the Orleans Parish Board of Review by filing online at www.nolaassessor.com.

To file online at nolaassessor.com, on the Home Page click the E-File link in the left column then click Appeal of Taxable Valuation.  This link will be operational from Wednesday, July 22 through 4 p.m. August 20.

"You do not dispute the property assessment because you think your taxes are too high. That is a discussion to take up with the taxing authorities," said Assessor Williams. "You should see me because you think the value placed on your property is inaccurate due to estimations on its size, comparable sales or market values."

To contest an assessment value, individuals are advised to have an assessment letter and any additional documentation to support their claim, such as a recent appraisal, a builder's contract, photos or insurance coverage of the property, said Assessor Williams.

No appointment is necessary; individuals will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis at all locations.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Peter Pan   July 22 - 26

Directed by Kelly Fouchi

Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick Tinkerbell visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and with a sprinkle of pixie dust begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bungling pirates, and of course the villainous Captain Hook.

Featuring the iconic songs "I'm Flying," "I've Gotta Crow," "I Won't Grow Up," and "Never Never Land," and a rousing book full of magic, warmth, and adventure, Peter Pan is the perfect show for the child in all of us who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up.

New Orleans, LA

WHO:     Mayor Mitch Landrieu

SCHEDULE OF COMMUNITY MEETINGS

New Orleans, LA - On Wed., July 15, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Councilmember LaToya Cantrell will host a community meeting in City Council District B to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2016 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders.

The goal of the budgeting for outcomes process is to produce a more resident-driven budget and ensure process improvement and accountability of government performance. This national best practice is designed to enhance services and get a better return on investment of public dollars by encouraging City agencies to invest public resources based on the results residents and City leaders want to achieve. While traditional budgeting systems are hinged on incremental changes to the previous year's level of effort, budgeting for outcomes ensures that all City budgets are funded based on how well they achieve residents' priorities. This year, Spanish interpretation will be available for Spanish-speaking residents.

Before the district meeting, City officials will also host a resource center from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. where residents may visit one-on-one with representatives from several City departments and agencies to address specific complaints and concerns.  The meeting will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.  Residents who cannot attend community meetings are invited to share their comments and input by sending e-mail to [email protected].

New Orleans to host Major League Gaming finals

New Orleans has finally snagged another Superbowl ... for video gamers, at least.

Major League Gaming has announced that the city will be the home of the MLG World Finals, which will take place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

It's the championship for the longest-running eSports league in the world. Participants will be competing for more than $500,000 during the 3-day event.

It's also been a coveted event for the city. For eight months, Greater New Orleans, Inc. worked with the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, the convention center and the New Orleans Business Alliance to land the MLG World Finals.

Melissa Ehlinger, interim CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance, said the "decision affirms the strength of the New Orleans digital media landscape and signals the growing reputation the city enjoys as a gaming hub."

The championship will be hosted Oct. 18 in the convention center's theater. For more information and to purchase tickets visitwww.majorleaguegaming.com/finals.
