Bilingual Storm Drain Markers LPBF is pleased to announce that we have received a Keep Louisiana Beautiful 2015-2016 Healthy Communities Grant. The grant provides for bilingual storm drain markers that will be distributed to adults and youths in parishes that drain to Lake Pontchartrain. This is an essential component of encouraging better environmental stewardship and reducing the litter that reaches the lake through storm sewers. LPBF's signature "Beach Sweep" on September 19th and its new "Spring Sweep" in April 2016 will engage approximately 2,000 youths and adults in several parishes who will be able to place these decals on storm drains throughout the basin. LPBF plans to distribute the storm drain markers at cleanup events throughout the year as well which will create an unprecedented capacity to provide this important prevention tool. The markers are also a way to engage schools and scout troops and to teach stewardship of our local resources. LPBF will keep an accurate record of all markers placed to ensure they are spread throughout the Lake Pontchartrain Basin. Thanks to Keep Louisiana Beautiful for this wonderful opportunity for litter education and abatement. For more information visit us online at www.SaveOurLake.org or call (504) 836-2215. |
NFL alums join plans for assisted living center in Kenner
By: Lance Traweek,
The National Football League Alumni Association is part of a team that wants to build an assisted living center in Kenner within the next year. The City Council is expected to vote on the plans tomorrow.
Inspired Living at Kenner, which would be located at the intersection of Vintage and North Loyola, joins a larger plan announced in early July to build dozens of similar facilities in areas that have influx of retired NFL players.
The long-term care facilities would specialize in memory loss, stemming from concerns that NFL players experience head trauma and concussions throughout their careers.
The centers would not only cater to ex-NFL players but the community at large. One in eight adults over the age of 60 has some form of memory loss, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"With an aging population and more and more Americans needing memory care services, including some former NFL players, we want to give our members an option that we can stand behind," Joe Pisarcik, president and CEO of the NFL alumni association, said in a news release that announced the program.
Validus Senior Living, the developer of the proposed site, has purchased a nine-acre property next to Ochsner Medical Center in the city. Validus and Piper Jaffray, a full-service U.S. investment bank, have allocated $1.1 billion to build 33 centers near NFL cities within the next five years.
The proposal for Kenner, which would include the capability of housing 160 residents, has the support of Mayor Mike Yenni.
"This is certainly a first-class development and it will offer, assuming it is approved, more choices for seniors and those taking care of loved ones," he said. "This is yet another in a succession of significant new businesses that have chosen Kenner in the past year, which offers additional proof that the Kenner 2030 Plan - though still in its infancy - is having a profound effect."
The facilities nationwide would offer swimming pools, dog parks, boardwalks, tiki huts, exclusive technology and putting greens, as well as fine dining, according to a new release.

The presentation is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration. The panel includes the following authors. Alys Arden, The Casquette Girls The Casquette Girls takes place after a major storm rips through New Orleans. Adele Le Moyne and her father are among the first to return to the city following the mandatory evacuation. Adele wants nothing more than for life to return to normal. Events too unnatural - even for New Orleans - lead Adele to an attic that has been sealed for 300 years, and the chaos she unleashes threatens not only her life but everyone she knows. Caught suddenly in a hurricane of eighteenth-century myths and monsters, Adele must untangle a web of magic that links the climbing murder rate back to her own ancestors. Alys Arden lives in New Orleans. The Casquette Girls is her first novel. Deborah Burst, Hallowed Halls of Greater New Orleans The book chronicles more than a dozen spiritual sites and profiles their history, architecture and the roles they play in the community. This book is dedicated to the beauty and spirituality of these hallowed halls but is not a religious voyage into any particular faith. More than a chronicle of historic timelines, each chapter offers a snapshot of the community, a sense of place, from a pastor who ministers his flock over a pint of beer to an iconic Cathedral graced with a visit from Pope John Paul II. The book includes an introduction by author Anne Rice. Deborah Burst is a New Orleans native, a freelance writer and photographer of travel, culinary culture and architecture. She is a co-founder of the Northshore Literary Society, member of the Southeastern Press Association and Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association and holds a BFA from Tulane University. Dawn Chartier, Bewitching the Enemy, (Book 1 Vieux Carre Witch Sister series) Contractor Storm Morgeaux is trying to keep her business afloat and not sleep with new client Dr. Nathan Davis. Adding to her troubles is the fact that she accidentally released a series of dark spells. Now evil warlocks are after her family, and she has no idea who she can trust. Nathan's biggest concern is getting his pediatric surgery center up and running. Still, his stunning new contractor provides plenty of distraction-until she sets off his Paladin medallion. A warlock is near. Nathan's first responsibility is eliminating the woman who wields new and dangerous magic. Dawn Chartier grew up in New Orleans where her parents owned a bookshop. She came to writing later in life. She sold her second book, a contemporary erotic romance titled Diamonds. She also authored Not An Angel, a Poryria Vampire Novel Book One, in 2012. Alexandrea Weiss, The Art of Sin Grady Paulson spends his nights pleasing a lot of women. The bump and grind of being a male stripper is getting old for Grady and when his cross-country tour takes him to New Orleans, everything changes. He meets Allison Wagner, a smart, successful woman who is wrong for him. Sparks fly, and soon Allison has Grady rethinking his future. He wants to settle down, but Allison is hiding a devastating secret that could threaten his plans. Will Grady finally break free from his seedy, sequined world or will her troubled past seal their fate? On Bourbon Street, temptation is the name of the game for all those who practice the "art of sin." From New Orleans, Alexandrea Weis was raised in the motion picture industry and began writing stories at the age of eight. In college she studied nursing and went on to teach at a local university. After several years in the medical field, she wrote her first novel, To My Senses. Since that time she has published many novels. Sue Quiroz, Event Hostess Sue Quiroz helped organize the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Fan Club which now has more than 1,000 members. In 2002, she started the first Anne Rice Halloween Ball with her own money to hire bands. In 2010, she started Undead Con, a symposium in which authors discuss their books, tell how they got started writing and what process they went through to get their books published. This is an AWESOME recipe for soup in the summer! Use your Weekday Box watermelon, tomatoes, peppers, and maybe even throw in some arugula for spice.
Gazpacho, okay another word that I have some fun saying (like galette or ghanoush). This gazpacho is a summer twist on traditional gazpacho, the main ingredient is sweet watermelon instead of tomatoes. I love using watermelon any possible way I can in the summer and this recipe showcases watermelon in a savory way; it's a combination of traditional ingredients in gazpacho mixed with watermelon resulting in a sweet yet spicy soup. Also this recipe comes in perfect timing as Saturday August 3rd was National Watermelon Day! If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, I was having fun posting many pictures and comments about the wonders of watermelon.
What is gazpacho? Gazpacho is a tomato based soup, served cold. The ingredients used vary from culture to culture, with tomato as the main ingredient followed by onions, cucumber, garlic, herbs, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Other additions you may see around the world include seafood, meat, vegetable stock, bread, grapes, avocados, etc. Not only can the ingredients in gazpacho vary, but the ending texture as well depending on whether the dish was pureed using a blender or traditionally mashed with a mortar and pestle. I chose to use my Vitamix to create a smooth texture.
I know what you may be thinking, cold soup? Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as well when I first heard of gazpacho. To be honest, for years I didn't enjoy gazpacho and oddly enough I love cold tomatoes, cool cucumbers, and every ingredient that typically makes up this dish; but the phrase 'cold soup' left me feeling ehhh. That was until I came across the concept of adding in watermelon to a traditional tomato based gazpacho. This is a great recipe to "dip your toe" into the world of gazpacho (unintentional rhyming). It's very light, refreshing, easy to digest, sweet, spicy, and zesty all in the same bite. All perfect characteristics for a summer soup (especially because this makes plenty to share!). Serve with |
- cool avocado slices
- thinly sliced cucumbers

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

A Public Forum: What's the Future of the Carrollton Courthouse?
Wednesday, July 29 @ 6:00 pm First Unitarian Universalist Church 5212 S. Claiborne Ave. (at the corner of Jefferson Ave.)
Come learn more about the building at the heart of our community
...and share your ideas about its future
The
National Trust for Historic Preservation recently accepted Louisiana Landmarks Society's nomination of the Carrollton Courthouse for its 2015 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. This brings the courthouse not only local, but national attention.
Our next step is to host a public forum - and we want to hear from the community about what you would like it to become. Please bring your comments, and help to shape the future of this historic site.
Brief presentations from the Orleans Parish School Board, the historic tax credit division of the State Historic Preservation Office, local historians, and preservation architects about the potentials for reuse will be followed by a public comment session.

New Orleans, LA WHO: Mayor Mitch Landrieu SCHEDULE OF COMMUNITY MEETINGS New Orleans, LA - On Wed., July 15, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Councilmember LaToya Cantrell will host a community meeting in City Council District B to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2016 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders. The goal of the budgeting for outcomes process is to produce a more resident-driven budget and ensure process improvement and accountability of government performance. This national best practice is designed to enhance services and get a better return on investment of public dollars by encouraging City agencies to invest public resources based on the results residents and City leaders want to achieve. While traditional budgeting systems are hinged on incremental changes to the previous year's level of effort, budgeting for outcomes ensures that all City budgets are funded based on how well they achieve residents' priorities. This year, Spanish interpretation will be available for Spanish-speaking residents. Before the district meeting, City officials will also host a resource center from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. where residents may visit one-on-one with representatives from several City departments and agencies to address specific complaints and concerns. The meeting will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Residents who cannot attend community meetings are invited to share their comments and input by sending e-mail to [email protected]. Assessor: Rolls Open
Fourth Location to Open in N.O. East; Online Appeals to be Accepted August 3 - Thursday, August 20
New Orleans property owners who wish to discuss the taxable assessment on their property with the Assessor's Office may do so during the Open Rolls period, said Orleans Parish Assessor Erroll Williams. The tax rolls will be open weekdays beginning July 27, 2015, to Monday, August 17, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Property owners may visit any of the Office's four locations:
City Hall 1300 Perdido Street 4th Floor |
Algiers Courthouse 225 Morgan Street 1st Floor |
Lakeview Christian Center, 5885 Fleur De Lis Drive 2nd Floor (July 15 -Aug. 17 ONLY) |
***NEW*** New Orleans East Satellite 5555 Bullard Avenue Suite 103 (July 15 -Aug. 17 ONLY) |
Visiting with the Assessor's Office at one of the locations above is regarded as an "Informal Appeal." Property owners may bypass this step and file a "Formal Appeal" with the Orleans Parish Board of Review by filing online at www.nolaassessor.com.
To file online at nolaassessor.com, on the Home Page click the E-File link in the left column then click Appeal of Taxable Valuation. This link will be operational from Wednesday, August 3 through 4 p.m. August 20.
"You do not dispute the property assessment because you think your taxes are too high. That is a discussion to take up with the taxing authorities," said Assessor Williams. "You should see me because you think the value placed on your property is inaccurate due to estimations on its size, comparable sales or market values."
To contest an assessment value, individuals are advised to have an assessment letter and any additional documentation to support their claim, such as a recent appraisal, a builder's contract, photos or insurance coverage of the property, said Assessor Williams.
No appointment is necessary; individuals will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis at all locations.

New Orleans to host Major League Gaming finals
New Orleans has finally snagged another Superbowl ... for video gamers, at least.
Major League Gaming has announced that the city will be the home of the MLG World Finals, which will take place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
It's the championship for the longest-running eSports league in the world. Participants will be competing for more than $500,000 during the 3-day event.
It's also been a coveted event for the city. For eight months, Greater New Orleans, Inc. worked with the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, the convention center and the New Orleans Business Alliance to land the MLG World Finals.
Melissa Ehlinger, interim CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance, said the "decision affirms the strength of the New Orleans digital media landscape and signals the growing reputation the city enjoys as a gaming hub."
The championship will be hosted Oct. 18 in the convention center's theater. For more information and to purchase tickets visitwww.majorleaguegaming.com/finals.
