NATIONAL MEDICAL EXAMINERS ISSUES REACCREDITATION

FOR JEFFERSON PARISH CORONER'S OFFICE

(Harvey, LA) - The Jefferson Parish Coroner's office is one of only six Coroner's offices out of 1,600 offices across the country to be Accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), announced Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich today. The office was originally accredited in 2009 under the leadership of former Coroner Robert Treuting.

In naming its reaccreditation for the Jefferson Parish Coroner's office, NAME said that the Jefferson Coroner's office easily achieved accreditation. In its intense and rigorous survey of the office, Medical Examiner inspectors revealed zero deficiencies among its extensive checklist of more than 350 items.

Inspection Team Chairman Dr. David Fowler said, "The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office represents one of the highest quality systems found anywhere in the United States. The citizens can be proud of the hard work, dedication and leadership of Dr. Cvitanovich and his team in attaining this high honor."

The accreditation will continue until October 2019 at which time the office will need to reapply for its continued accreditation.

"This accreditation means our office is not only meeting, but exceeding the highest professional standards," said Dr. Cvitanovich. "The fact that the inspectors found zero deficiencies is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team at the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office."

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's office is the only coroner's office in the Gulf South to achieve the NAME accreditation. The NAME inspection checklist covers items from multiple categories, including office space, training, safety guidelines, tissue donations and mass disaster plans.

Former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason has won the 2015 George Halas Award from the Pro Football Writers of America, the organization announced on Monday.

The award is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes adversity to succeed. Halas was an owner, manager and player for the Chicago Bears and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

Gleason is the third player from the Saints to win the award, joining kicking Tom Dempsey (1972) and quarterback Drew Brees (2007).

Gleason, who was diagnosed with ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, has raised funding and awareness through his activism and charitable foundations.

Team Gleason aspires to help people diagnosed with ALS to live "productive, inspired lives by providing access to life-affirming events and assistive technology until a cure is found."

In announcing Gleason's award, the PFWA wrote: "His zeal for life and travel around the world has not been slowed by his diagnosis. Fueled by his slogans of "No White Flags!" and "Awesome Ain't Easy", Gleason and his foundation got to work almost immediately to raise public awareness about ALS and find ways to end the disease. He completed his work on his MBA from Tulane University, and he and wife Michel started a family with the birth of son Rivers in October 2011.

"As part of his advocacy in getting assistive technology in the hands of those suffering with ALS and related diseases, the U.S. Senate passed the Steve Gleason Act of 2015 in April, which if passed by the House and signed into law, would make speech generating devices, like the one Gleason uses to communicate to the world, available to patients through Medicare and Medicaid."

TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL

Lahpet continues to impress us every week with their delicious Burmese lunch offerings under the Green Plate Special tent. Last week shoppers and staff alike were raving about the delicious curried catfish they prepared as well as the pickled ginger salad. Mmmmm. Can't wait to see what they'll be preparing next week! Check in on their Facebook page today to get a sneak peek of the menu! See you out at market tomorrow!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Market's been filled up with tons of cucumbers these past few weeks. Sometimes it's hard to see past a cucumber as just another good addition to salad, but when the weather is warm, a nice cucumber drink always hits the spot. Check out this Cucumber Lime Crush recipe from our friends at Ralph's on the Park for a great summertime cocktail and substitute cucumber water for cucumber-infused vodka for a nice refreshing alcohol-free version!

FRESH & LOCAL

We're gearing up for a great day at market this Saturday with all sorts of fun stuff going on! First off, we're excited to have our very own Jerry Burg of Burg's Bees at market this Saturday for a Bee Keeping demo! Jerry will have his observation hive out to show us all what the hive looks like on the inside, and will talk about all that's involved in getting his delicious honey on the table at market. For all you aspiring urban bee keepers out there, you won't want to miss out! Demo starts at 10 am, but Jerry will be selling honey all market long so be sure to come on out and pick a bottle or two up for yourself! To make market all the more livelier, we'll also be graced with the fine traditional blues stylings of the Bad Oyster Band! These veterans of blues and roots music will be rockin' the market air starting at 9am so come on out ready to shop and to tap a toe! See ya'll out for a great market this Saturday!

PICK OF THE WEEK:

PEARL RIVER BLUES BLUEBERRY JAM!

Our friends and blueberry vendors from Pearl River, Pearl River Blues, have had a rough time getting berries ready for market with all of this rain the past few weeks. We're still hopeful they'll make it out to market before the season's over with their delicious certified organic blueberries, but in the meantime, we're traveling to them for a change. This Saturday, Pearl River Blues is having their annual Blueberry Farm Jam! All day long there will be food, drinks, music, dancing, and of course plenty of blueberries for all to enjoy. Come on out to market and make some groceries in the morning, then head on over to Pearl River and come jam with us! Should be a good ol' time. For more info. on this fun and free event click here. Summer Kids Culinary Camp 2015

WHAT: Kids Culinary Camp is a half-day summer camp that gets kids in the kitchen to learn to cook in a way that's hands-on and fun. Each day there's a new recipe and campers work together measuring, chopping, and stirring to create a delicious and healthy lunch to enjoy with each other. They'll also be staying active and improving their nutritional literacy through games and arts and crafts projects.

WHO: Kids Camp is for children rising into grades 2nd through 5th and/or up to 12 years old.

WHERE: Kids Camp is held at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum at 1504 Oretha C. Haley Boulevard.

June 15 - June 19

June 22 - June 26

July 6 - July 10

COST: Each week of camp will be $75 per camper, and $60 per camper for SoFAB Members. To cover rising food, utility, and staffing costs, we had to make this change so that the camp can continue as a place for kids to learn, and grow in confidence in the kitchen.

HOW TO REGISTER: Registration will open here, on this page, . Please click on the first date of the  week you are interested in to see tickets. We have a discounted price for SoFAB Members. On Tuesday, June 16, the LHC hosts a free screening of Slavery By Another Name, an acclaimed documentary directed by Sam Pollard. The event is co-hosted by Le Musee de F.P.C. and The McKenna Museum of African American Art. Scholar Jari Honore will introduce the film at 6pm.

The screening marks the LEH's fourth and final installment in the Created Equal series, an national film project of the National Endowment for the Humanities to commemorate the anniversaries of the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington. The June 16 event at the Louisiana Humanities Center also honors the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth holiday, observed on June 19.

Based on Blackmon's research, Slavery by Another Name spans eight decades, from 1865 to 1945, revealing the interlocking forces in both the South and the North that enabled this "neoslavery" to begin and persist.  Using archival photographs and dramatic re-enactments filmed on location in Alabama and Georgia, it tells the forgotten stories of both victims and perpetrators of neoslavery and includes interviews with their descendants living today

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:45pm. The LHC is located at 938 Lafayette Street in New Orleans. For more information, call 504.620.2630

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will host the second in a series of community forums to get feedback on the draft goals for a major initiative to restore meaningful arts education to every K-8 classroom in New Orleans.

It's part of a years-long process in which New Orleans is developing a strategic plan for arts education in the school system. The planning is being done under the guidance of Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child, a program of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Last year, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation partnered with the City of New Orleans, KID smART, the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Tulane's Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives to develop a plan for achieving a difficult task: to put arts back into the schools. We submitted an application to the Kennedy Center, and in September New Orleans was selected as Any Given Child's 16th city in which to develop a strategic plan and implement expanded arts instruction for every K-8 student.

Since then, a large "community arts team" has met monthly with facilitators from the Kennedy Center to begin developing a strategic plan for arts in New Orleans schools.

In February, we hosted our first community forum, at which we collected input from the public on various aspects of the iniative - including public awareness, policy and government, curriculum, budget and more.

On Tuesday, we will present a draft of the long-term goals of the initiative. You can read the draft here.

This is an opportunity for the public to weigh in on this very important project.

Admission to this event is free. Please RSVP here.

Great Books Discussion Group - "Sanctuary" by William Faulkner
A/V Conference Room, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie

Psychologically astute and wonderfully poetic, Sanctuary is a powerful novel examining the nature of true evil, through the prisms of mythology, local lore, and hard-boiled detective fiction. This is the dark, at times brutal, story of the kidnapping of Mississippi debutante Temple Drake, who introduces her own form of venality into the Memphis underworld where she is being held.

Animal Welfare Event!

"Kitten Workshop" Offered at East Bank Regional Library

METAIRIE, LA - The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, the SpayMart Kitten Foster Program, and local veterinarian Amanda Perkins will present a "Kitten Workshop" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon, Metairie.

The presentation is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.

The purpose of the workshop is to educate people about kitten bottle feeding and foster class. Participants will learn the basics of bottle feeding and caring for young kittens. The class is needed because there are many feral cats in the region that are not neutered or spayed. At present, the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter is at its capacity.

During the seminar, participants will learn the following:

  • Should I take in an abandoned kitten? Be certain kittens are truly abandoned because mothers may still be around. If the kittens are clean, plump and sleeping quietly in a heap, it is possible they have an attentive mom who is not around at the time.
  • Warmth and first aid - Kittens under three weeks of age cannot control their body temperatures. If a rescued kitten feels cold, warm it immediately but gently. Place it on a heating pad wrapped in towels and on the lowest setting.
  • Feeding - Unfortunately, cow's milk is not nutritious enough for kittens. They will slowly starve to death and have diarrhea which is extremely dangerous for young kittens.  Pet nursing kits and kitten formula are available at pet stores.
  • Stimulation and litter box training - When kittens are about four weeks old, they are usually ready to experience litterboxes. After each meal, the kitten should be placed in the box.
  • Cleaning and flea control - If kittens of any age have fleas, they should be treated as soon as possible. Young kittens can get anemia from flea infestation which can endanger their lives. Other skin irritations to check for are ringworm and mange.
  • Weight gain - Kittens should gain about one-half ounce every day or four ounces per week. They can be weighed on a postal scale.
  • Weaning - Weaning usually occurs at about four to five weeks, but some kittens take a bit longer, especially without a momcat to show them how to eat solid food.
  • Development milestones - Kitten eyes are blue until they are about six to seven weeks old, but the true color will not settle until the kitten is about three month old. About three weeks, kittens start to stand up. At three and one-half weeks, kittens begin to crawl. At four weeks, they start to play with each other and develop teeth. Other milestones will be discussed.

A portion of the program will be spent on the protocol for feeding incoming babies and the procedures of the Kitten Foster Care Program.

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Adult Programming Manager for the library, at 504-889-8143 or [email protected].

Chanterelle and Shiitake Mushroom Crostini

Chanterelle mushrooms are a super specialty item featured in the Weekday Box! As always, feel free to bend the rules and incorporate more items from your produce box (we're looking at you, heirloom purple cherokee tomatoes!).  Check out the recipe!

Chanterelle and Shitake Mushroom Crostini

(24 pieces)

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbs butter
  • 2 tbs olive oil or canola oil
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 2 cups chanterelle mushrooms, small dice
  • 2 cups shitake mushrooms, small dice
  • 1 tbs fresh thyme leaves, slightly minced
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup Castello, Gruyere Cheese or other favourite blue cheese, grated
  • 24 crostini (baguette sliced 1 cm thick and toasted lightly both sides)

Preparation:

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil. Add the shallots and sauté for about 3 to 4 minutes on medium. Add the mushrooms and turn the heat to high. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes and stir frequently until they are golden brown. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper until desired taste is achieved. Add the fresh thyme and stir. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the crostini by adding about a tablespoon of the mushroom mixture onto each one. Place onto a cookie sheet and top with about a small pinch of the grated blue cheese. Place under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly. Remove and place onto your favorite platter and serve.

Tasting Notes

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

ROUND TABLE LUNCHEON TO CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The monthly Round Table Luncheon, hosted by Social Columnist and bon vivant Margarita "Dahling" Bergen, will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary on Wednesday, June 17 at Antoine's restaurant, 713 St. Louis Street in the heart of the historic French Quarter.

The event will start at 12 noon; doors open at 11:30 a.m.

The luncheons are styled after those of Dorothy Parker's Round Table Luncheons which were held at New York's Algonquin Hotel between 1919 and 1929. The first New Orleans Round Table Luncheon was held on August 18, 2005 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, just ten days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall. The event was put on hiatus for several months but they resumed in the spring of 2006 and have been held every month since then.

Over the years, the luncheon has featured leading cultural/artist figures, business and community leaders and other prominent individuals discussing a variety of topics that have impacted the Crescent City. During those years, the luncheon has helped shape the direction of New Orleans during a period of rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

The commemorative luncheon being held at Antoine's on June 17 will feature the first guest at the first luncheon: nationally award-winning writer, storyteller, speaker and humorist, Verna Gates. And in the spirit of Dorothy Parker, talented "Wit and Wrath" star "Miss Claudia" Baumgarten will be channeling Ms. Parker with some of the great American writer's most famous anecdotes and humorous observations on life.

Live entertainment will be provided by pianist Jim Walpole.

Guests will be greeted by a glass of champagne to go along with the menu of a Summer Salad (mixed greens, pecans, cranberries in a pepper jelly vinaigrette) or Alligator Soup, and an entrée choice of either Shrimp Creole over rice or Demi-Chicken Rochambeau. Dessert will be Antoine's famous Baked Alaska with Chocolate Sauce

For this special 10th anniversary occasion, Antoine's is offering the one-time-only discounted price of $39.99 per person, inclusive of tax and gratuities.

For reservations call 504-495-9181 - The price will go up to $45 after June 15.

Shakespeare's epic fairytale kicks off the 2015 Festival

The Festival will open the 2015 season with the first production of Cymbeline in its history! Though less familiar to audiences than many of the Bard's plays, this epic romance offers a poignant love story, a wicked stepmother, a princess in mortal danger and an adventure into a wild forest filled with both friends and foes. You don't want to miss this fantastical tale. Recent productions from coast to coast are drawing rave reviews.

To spearhead this production, the Festival has recruited internationally known director Rob Clare. First an actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company, then a Staff Director at the U.K.'s National Theatre, Mr. Clare holds a doctorate from Oxford University, where he also taught. He has directed, performed with and coached some of the most respected classical actors of our time.

ST. LUKE'S WING AND A PRAYER PRODUCTIONS

PRESENTS "SHREK THE MUSICAL"

Everyone is living happily ever after at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Canal Boulevard as the  church's Wing and Prayer  production group puts on its annual summer musical.  This year's production "Shrek The Musical" brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.  Featuring a big green ogre, wisecracking donkey, feisty princess, a short-tempered bad guy and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, this fun-for-the-whole-family musical proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.

For more than 40 years, the play committee at St. Luke's has erected a stage in its sanctuary, producing musicals with a message as a ministry to the community.  The performances spread the good word about the church and about the joy of live theatre.  Several cast members who participated in the musical in their younger days are now sharing the inspiration they received by teaching theatre and directing/choreographing shows in schools and summer camps all around metropolitan New Orleans.

Green Solstice Soiree Showcases Four Local Groups' Decades of Commitment to the Environment

Following a successful anniversary celebration in 2014, Concordia: Community Centered Planning & Design, Global Green USA, The Green Project, and Gulf Restoration Network are hosting a second annual Solstice Party at the Peristyle in City Park to highlight their combined 94 years of service and environmental stewardship. The celebration will kick off the summer season in true New Orleans fashion with a free party in one of the city's most iconic backdrops.

On Friday, June 19th from 5:30pm till sundown, there will be watermelon, champagne, Reyka Vodka cocktails (provided by Republic Distributing and the William Grant portfolio), ice cream and live music by Margie Perez & the Honeypots and Luther Gray & the Congo Square Preservation Society. In addition to the complimentary watermelon, food truck vendors Green to Go NOLA, 3 Potato 4, and Geaux Green Snoballs will be on site selling light, solstice worthy fare.

An auction of one-of-a-kind rain barrels painted by NOLA artists will benefit the non-profits. Artists include Jodie Flowers, Hugo Montero, and Karel Sloane-Boekbinder.

"We appreciate local artists lending their support to promote sustainable water management practices. This rain barrel auction is always a highlight of the event and I can't wait to see this year's masterpieces," said Cyn Sarthou, Executive Director of GRN.

In line with our goal of sustainability, the sponsor Phoenix Recycling will collect cans, paper, cardboard,  and glass; and the Composting Network will gather the watermelon rinds, compostables and biodegradables on site.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with organizations sharing a common goal, while showing our appreciation to the community we are so humbled to serve, "said Sean Vissar, the Green Project's Executive Director.

Entrance to the Solstice Party is free and open to the public. Wristbands are required for adult beverages and may be secured at an on-site registration table. For more information, contact Natasha Noordhoff or Christal White.

 Pearl River Blues Presents:

"THE 2015 PRB FARM JAM: Quinceañera Edition

 Saturday, June 20th

...is our day of music and berry picking!

Welcome to PRB's 15th year of blueberry farming! We are thankful for the many wonderful people who have blessed our farm throughout these years and helped our field grow into the beautiful place that it is. To commemorate this momentous occasion, we are throwing a quinceañera for our little blueberry field! The way we see it: PRB blueberry field has a feminine spirit. Just as a young woman who turns 15 in Latino culture is celebrated with dancing, song, special food and special dresses - we too will dress our field up and dance, sing and eat to celebrate! Wear something pastel, if you'd like, and have fun!

COME ON DOWN to the farm and spend our quinceañera listening to amazing local music while you pick the best, most nutritious, sustainably-grown blueberries in the South.

All are welcome! Admission free! But we suggest a donation to help us pay for the bands:-). Fest begins at 11:00 am.

We'll be selling delicious food & drinks made from our farm produce and other local providers: tacos and dishes for meat lovers and vegetable lovers, too, blueberry lemonade, desserts and BLUEBERRIES, of course!

Bring your chairs, blankets, sunscreen, swimming suits (we'll have a slip & slide where you can cool down), hats, Frisbees, soccer balls, family, friends, guitars, harmonicas, banjos, ukes, BYOB, etc, whatever you need for a fun day!

Too late to drive back home? Pack your tent, flashlight & camp for the night on the farm.

Come to dance and sing-along with our musical guests SO FAR:

Danielle Thomas (will be our m.c. & play a few songs too)

 Tommie "T-Bone" Pruitt

 The Sound Wagon Band

 Trio Lobo Latin Jazz

 Scordatura String Band

 Grayson Capps & Band

 and...

 YOU!

Louisiana SPCA urges you to prepare for hurricane season

Follow Our Lead and protect your pets with these helpful tips

NEW ORLEANS - As today marks the official start of the 2015 hurricane season and soon to be the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urges pet-owners to create an advance evacuation plan that includes their pets. Pets are members of the family and should be included in all disaster preparations.

For households with pets, it is pertinent to include your animals in your evacuation plans and to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Do not, under any circumstances, leave your pet behind. Leaving your pet tied up outside to a tree or fence is not an option. Leaving your pet indoors is risky due to floods from tidal surges which could trap your animal in a house filling up quickly with water.

Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least three days. For the safety of your pets and for your own peace of mind, the Louisiana SPCA advises the following procedures for hurricane season.

Before hurricane season:

  •          Current vaccinations - Make sure your pet's vaccinations are current. Make copies of your records to take with you and put them in an air-tight container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals.
  •          Identification - Update your pet's ID tags if needed. Talk to your veterinarian about permanent identification such as microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database. This simple step could be your pet's round-trip ticket home in the event they get lost.
  •          Compile a list of places to go - Consider staying with family or friends who reside outside of the affected area and are comfortable with pets, or look into pet-friendly hotels, shelters or boarding facilities outside of the hurricane strike zone. Please note that the Louisiana SPCA does not board animals.

What your pet needs for an evacuation:

  •          Food and water - Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and family.
  •          Medicine and medical records - Keep an extra supply of medicines your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals.
  •          Collar with ID tags, harness or leash - Your pet should wear a collar with an up-to-date rabies tag and ID tag at all times. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag.
  •          Crate or other pet carrier - Get a portable, secure and covered pet carrier in advance. The carrier should be large enough so your pet can completely turn around and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number and alternate contact information on the carrier.
  •          Sanitation - Include pet litter, small litter box, newspaper, towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach. Do not use scented or color safe bleaches or those with added cleaners. Use 16 drops of regular bleach per gallon of water.

New Orleans residents who will need assistance to evacuate are urged to register with the City to participate in the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP). This plan includes both residents and their pets. Orleans Parish residents can register by calling 311. When a mandatory evacuation is called, pickup points throughout the City will be announced where you can board buses that will take you to the evacuation departure points.

"Almost 10 years ago the Louisiana SPCA, along with partners from across the country, created the largest animal rescue effort our nation has ever seen," says Louisiana SPCA CEO Ana Zorrilla. "Nearly 44 percent of people who stayed behind during Hurricane Katrina did so because they refused to leave their pets behind. Now, with the City Assisted Evacuation Plan, our community has a safe place for their pets to go."

New Orleans to host Major League Gaming finals

New Orleans has finally snagged another Superbowl ... for video gamers, at least.

Major League Gaming has announced that the city will be the home of the MLG World Finals, which will take place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

It's the championship for the longest-running eSports league in the world. Participants will be competing for more than $500,000 during the 3-day event.

It's also been a coveted event for the city. For eight months, Greater New Orleans, Inc. worked with the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, the convention center and the New Orleans Business Alliance to land the MLG World Finals.

Melissa Ehlinger, interim CEO of the New Orleans Business Alliance, said the "decision affirms the strength of the New Orleans digital media landscape and signals the growing reputation the city enjoys as a gaming hub."

The championship will be hosted Oct. 18 in the convention center's theater. For more information and to purchase tickets visitwww.majorleaguegaming.com/finals.
