HOGS FOR THE CAUSE CROWNS HIGH ON THE HOG GRAND CHAMPION AND HOG OF FAME INDUCTEES
$765K raised by competition teams

New Orleans, Louisiana-Hogs for the Cause has announced the names of the Grand Champion, category winners and top fundraiser for the 2015 Ben Sarrat, Jr. "High on the Hog" Cook-off presented by Children's Hospital. In addition, the 2015 inductees into the Hog of Fame were revealed during the 7th Annual Hogs for the Cause event on March 28, 2015 at City Park Festival Grounds, with nearly 30,000 in attendance. "This year our teams raised an astounding $765,000 for families in need," states Zandy Rainold, Hogs for the Cause Treasurer. "It is without question the most humbling moment to see so many people making such a huge difference in the lives of people they have never met; making day-to-day life just a little bit easier so they focus on their child's health." Hogs for the Cause has emerged as the premier funding source for pediatric brain cancer outreach services in the United States.

This year's Hog of Fame inductees are Matt Colosino of Porkin' Gently aka Lunchbox, Andrew Shuford of Team March of the Pigs and Jim Fein, Volunteer extraordinaire aka The Pope. The award represents continued dedication and service to the Hogs for the Cause organization. Colosino, a former Grand Champion, has crafted the team awards for last 3 years. "Colosino's work has been called 'the finest BBQ trophies in the land,'" states Rene Louapre, Hogs for the Cause Co-founder. Shuford has become the Executive Chef of Hogs for the Cause by helping produce boudin for the Emeril Lagasse Foundation's Boudin Bourbon & Beer event and developing "porkpourri" for the Hogs for the Cause Charleston event. "Andrew's creativity and passion for our organization makes for a perfect match," continues Louapre.  Fein has been involved with Hogs for the Cause since the first year. "Jim has been absolutely vital to the success of every Hogs event since the beginning," states Becker Hall, Hogs for the Cause Co-founder. "He is the type of volunteer who is willing to do everything and anything." This year Jim was tasked with making 10,000 jello shots, a job he did without breaking a sweat.

The 7th Annual Ben Sarrat, Jr. "High on the Hog" Cook-off topped 80 teams this year. The BBQ competitors vied for the title of Grand Champion, along with champions in the categories of Sauce, Whole Hog, Shoulder/Butt, Ribs, Porkpourri (anything pork), and Best Booth, Biggest Fundraiser, Best Friday Night Party and Fan Favorite.

MAYOR LANDRIEU ANNOUNCES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY APPOINTMENTS

NEW ORLEANS -  Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced he has appointed two senior officials to help lead the City's efforts to strengthen economic development and create more economic opportunities for New Orleans residents. Landrieu appointed Rebecca Conwell to serve as the Mayor's senior advisor for economic development and Ashleigh Gardere as the Mayor's senior advisor for economic opportunity and director of the City's Network for Economic Opportunity.

"Every New Orleanian should have the chance to get a good-paying job so they can provide for themselves and their family," said Mayor Landrieu. "I am proud to announce a new wave of leadership charged with moving our economic development and economic opportunity efforts forward. Rebecca and Ashleigh will help attract more businesses and retail, create more jobs and training opportunities and connect the people of New Orleans to those jobs and opportunities. New Orleans is on a roll and we must continue to double down on that momentum by creating pathways to prosperity for all the people of our great city."

As senior advisor for economic development, Rebecca Conwell will be instrumental in strengthening the City's economic development functions. She will work to attract new businesses, manage the City's incentive offerings and continue to work with the New Orleans Business Alliance to manage guidelines that help evaluate requests for public financing.

Prior to joining the City of New Orleans, Conwell served as the member-manager of Twenty-Two Ten, L.L.C., a consulting business specializing in government affairs, project creation and execution, issue analysis and management, and grassroots coalition building. Conwell spent 14 years at Tulane University, serving as executive director of state and local governmental affairs, chief of staff for the University president, and interim executive director of the Cowen Institute, a think tank for K-12 education in New Orleans.

Conwell has a B.B.A. in Finance from Lamar University.

As senior advisor for economic opportunity and director of the Network for Economic Opportunity, Ashleigh Gardere will manage the Office of Workforce Development and the Office of Supplier Diversity, both of which work to connect disadvantaged businesses and residents to opportunities to participate in the city's economic growth.

In that capacity, Gardere will also be responsible for the startup, development, implementation and management of productive partnerships among local industries, small businesses, residents, non-profits and City agencies to drive long-term prosperity.

In 2014, Mayor Landrieu launched the Mayor's Economic Opportunity Strategy to connect disadvantaged job seekers and businesses to new opportunities. As part of the strategy, he created the Network for Economic Opportunity to implement tactics that help improve access to job training for the most vulnerable jobseekers across the city.

Gardere has served as an advisor to Mayor Mitch Landrieu since 2010. In her previous role, Gardere helped develop and implement the Mayor's strategic priorities by administering and overseeing philanthropic special projects and related policy research. She was also responsible for the successful recruitment and alignment of public and private resources to support the Claiborne Corridor Initiative.

Prior to joining City of New Orleans, Gardere served as vice president of community relations at Chase Bank for Louisiana. She managed the firm's philanthropic activities and coordinated Chase's community development efforts to support revitalization across the state. During her tenure, Gardere piloted the firm's place-based neighborhood revitalization strategy and demonstrated the power of strong partnerships with community organizations, local and federal government and the private sector.

A New Orleans native, Gardere earned a bachelor's degree in metropolitan studies from New York University and a master's degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Since May 2010, the City has welcomed projects that are creating more than 9,100 new permanent, direct jobs, more than $1.2 billion in new capital investment, and millions of dollars in new tax revenues.  These include new, completed retail projects such as Costco's first store in Louisiana, two new Walmart stores, Mid-City Market, the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, Circle Food Store, the Refresh Project including Whole Foods Market, Magnolia Marketplace, and the soon-to-open South Market District as well as new corporate investment such as GE Capital's information technology center of excellence and the return of International Shipholding Corporation's headquarters.

Projects like these contributed to a 9.5 percent growth in sales taxes collected in 2013 and a growth rate of seven percent in 2014, yielding an estimated $23 million in new general fund revenues for the City in that time period.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Fava Beans are back! Louisiana Gourmet Produce has been bringing some gorgeous favas to our Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday markets. Come by and pick some up for yourself along with a pound of fresh jumbo shrimp for this Fava Beans and Shrimp recipe.

Fava Beans & Shrimp

It's fava bean season! This simple, delicious Fava Beans & Shrimp dish is ideal for Friday Lenten meals or any springtime lunch or dinner. Pick up a few pounds of Louisiana shrimp and fresh favas at the market this week.

Ingredients

1 pound fresh fava beans

1/2 pound small green beans

1/2 pound medium shrimp, peeled

2 heads fennel

1/2 cup chicken broth

1/2 cup white wine

1/2 lemon

1 large tomato, finely diced (for garnish)

Fennel fronds (for garnish)

Sauce

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves

1/4 cup olive oil

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon capers

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

Shell fava beans and discard the pods. Cook beans in boiling water until tender, then drain and place in an ice-water bath.

String the green beans if needed and cook in the same manner.

Poach shrimp in boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain and set aside.

Remove tops and any brown outside pieces from the fennel. Cut fennel into thin slices lengthwise. Place in a large pan with broth, wine, lemon, and enough water to barely cover. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until tender. Drain and set aside.

To prepare sauce: In blender container, combine basil, oil, vinegar, capers, and lemon juice. Blend until smooth.

To serve, divide fennel equally among four plates. Arrange shrimp and beans on top of fennel. Scatter diced tomato around the plates and then drizzle some of the dressing over each plate. Garnish with fennel fronds.

Serves 4 as salad, 2 as entreé

Printmaker Pippin Frisbie-Calder will be collaborating with Dr. Tim McLean of Tulane University to create a body of work around wetland microalgae awareness. In a public display their simulated and/or real-time, live projections of phytoplankton and woodcuts will act as large-scale representations of the aquatic micro-organisms of the wetlands and demonstrate their importance (functions and roles) within the larger ecosystem. This project aims to serve as an educational tool, hoping to draw all members of the public, independent of wetland awareness and appreciation, since few people (even among researchers) are aware of and recognize the microbial presence, diversity, beauty, and roles within the waters of the wetlands.

Pippin Frisbie-Calder graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with honors, specializing in printmaking, after which she traveled the States, then went to Indonesia for a year to participate in an educational program called Darmasiswa. Recent exhibitions include Antenna Gallery "What We Can Do", New Orleans, Lost Love Lounge for two group shows, New Orleans, Gallery II, Newcastle Maine, Via Via Cafe, Yogyakarta, Rumah Seni Eloprogo, Borobudur, Respecta Gallery, Jakarta, The Finest Mother F*ckers, Yogyakarta, Space Gallery, Denver, Risd Invitational Exhibition, Providence, RI and a residancy at AS220, Providence, RI.

Tim McLean received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2001. He further developed and adapted his molecular expertise to the field of marine ecology during two post-doc experiences, first at the University of Southern California and then at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Miami. Before assuming his position as Professor of Practice at Tulane University in 2014, he was an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. His research interests include using relevant 'omics-based technologies and bioinformatics to understand the molecular biology and ecology of a marine dinoflagellate that is responsible for forming harmful algal blooms ('red tides') in the Gulf of Mexico.

LSU Press authors read from new books about water

As Louisiana continues to generate fascinating new books, the LHC announces an ongoing reading series to spotlight local presses.

LSU Press authors Craig Colten and Oliver Houck will discuss their recent work, take questions from the audience and sign books. The event begins at 7pm and is free and open to the public.

In his new book, Southern Waters: The Limits to Abundance, Colten addresses how the South-in an environment fraught with uncertainty-can navigate the twin risks of too much water and not enough.

Houck's latest book, Downstream Toward Home: A Book of Rivers, recounts his six decades exploring America's waterways, from unnamed creeks and Louisiana swamps to the rivers of western canyons and the Alaskan tundra.

The event is sponsored by Abita Beer and Zapp's Chips. The LHC is located at 938 Lafayette Street in New Orleans. For more information, call 504.620.2630.

April Toole's Day brings Ignatius J. Reilly to life at The Irish House

Public displays of affection for literary heroes are not unfamiliar in New Orleans, from the Tennessee Williams New Orleans Literary Festival's Stella! shouting contest to the annual Bloomsday celebration for James Joyce's Ullyses.

But on April 1, it's April Toole's Day upstairs at The Irish House. A half-dozen readers will flesh out John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces, with excerpts that introduce key characters and dramatic tension in the novel.

"We're going to be onstage for about two and a half hours," says Chris Lane, the event's organizer. "We're going to be breaking it up in a number ways. I'd like to read excerpts where the main characters are introduced. They start to interact with each other toward the end of the novel, they start overlapping and these different threads start to come together."

Lane, along with Andy Vaught of Cripple Creek Theatre Company, the writer and teacher Anne Gisleson and Mary-Devon Dupuy, a local comedian, will read from the text. Lane says there will also be a "Wheel of Fortuna" ("When fortuna spins you downward," says Ignatius J. Reilly, the novel's protagonist, "go out to a movie and get more out of life"), and audience members will be able to spin for a chance to read a chapter or section of the book.

The reading won't just be done by actors and writers, Lane says, because he wants a variety of voices that can bring the text to life, particularly the local Yat dialogue that Toole so deliberately wrote into the text. "When I was choosing readers I was trying to get as many people who were from here. That wasn't based on any chauvinism," Lane says. "Or, people who have lived here enough time that they can kind of understand a lot of there references and they can really understand the language. A lot of times what happens is they'll bring in writers and actors. But I was trying to bring in some people from other disciplines."

The reading will have musical breaks and libations in between. Lane is working with The Irish House chef and owner Matt Murphy to come up with some Ignatius-themed dishes (think hotddogs, but, for the sake of all our constitutions and "valves," non-neon ones), though nothing has been confirmed just yet.

It all kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Lane is trying to make it an annual thing, like Bloomsday, which is also at The Irish House, but rights issues might make April Toole's Day a one time thing.

The Elm Theatre presents
NEVER SWIM ALONE by Daniel MacIvor
March 26 - April 18
Thursdays - Saturdays, 8pm
Old Marquer Theatre, 2400 St Claude Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117

Directed by Joanna Russo, NEVER SWIM ALONE is a hilarious satire centered around a 13-round, boxing style competition between Frank and Bill. Guided by a blue-bathing suited Referee, the two mean ruthlessly fight for the Top Dog title; calling into question the fighting dog we all have within us.

"NEVER SWIM ALONE is a story told in a structure we haven't explored at The Elm Theatre," said Artistic Director, Garrett Prejean. It's a new challenge for Elm. "The thing that really excited me about this play was how theatrical it was, yet it keeps to our focus: relationships."

The production runs from March 26th through April 18th, and will feature Artistic Director, Garrett Prejean (Frank), Big Easy nominee Nicholas Stephens (Bill), and a new local talent ,Tenea Intriago (Referee).

ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE

 Fri-Sat

DINNER AND SHOW

 (6:00pm Seating 8:00pm Showtime)

Sun

BRUNCH

 (11:00am Seating 1:00pm Showtime)

"Always ... Patsy Cline" Comes to the Stage Door Canteen at The National WWII Museum

Tickets Now Available for March 21-April 5 Run

NEW ORLEANS - The National WWII Museum's live-theater venue, the Stage Door Canteen, regularly plays host to award-winning shows celebrating the music of the World War II era, but their newest offering will take audiences into the years following the war and celebrate one of country music's first crossover sensations.

"Always ... Patsy Cline," a musical play, complete with down-home country humor and true emotion, includes many of Cline's unforgettable hits such as "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," "Sweet Dreams," "Walkin' After Midnight," and many more.

The show, which runs March 21 - April 5,  is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer, who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. It is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The show takes its title from Cline's letters to Seger, which she signed affectionately "Love Always, Patsy."

Margaret Belton reprises the role of Patsy Cline from a recent award-winning appearance at Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, California.

"As long as I can remember, the music from old records was always one of my favorite sounds," said Belton. "Once I discovered Patsy, things changed. I just wanted to climb into her voice and live in it. The soul and love that pours from her voice made me feel so alive, and I deeply connected with it."

In addition to her many stage and screen credits, Belton also performs regularly as the lead singer of The Patsychords.

Infant Massage is a parent enrichment program that provides loving touch from the start of a baby's life. It incorporates techniques that help promote social and emotional development, brain development and touch, adaptations for children with special needs, and bonding and attachment with parents and caregivers.

According to Guilbeau, early psychological and sensory input is essential in facilitating the development of all infants. Infant massage contains critical elements of bonding including eye to eye contact, smiling, soothing sounds, caressing, smell, and mutual interaction.

Benefits for the baby: Enhances bonding and attachment; promotes social, emotional and cognitive development; reduces gas and colic; strengthens and regulates primary organ systems; regulates behavioral patterns and promotes sleep.

Benefits for parents: Enhances communication and emotional ties; promotes better understanding of infant cues; helps parents unwind and relax; provides quality one-on-one interaction; gives fathers a special time to connect and bond;

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival

 is April 9th-12th

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival presented by Chevron is April 9th-April 12th, 2015! Locals and tourism officials call French Quarter Festival 'the kickoff to festival season in New Orleans.' What started as a neighborhood festival and 'locals' event' has grown into the largest showcase of Louisiana music and food in the world, with an economic impact of over $251 million. Last year, Huffington Post named French Quarter Festival the "one thing to do in Louisiana."

In 2015, attendees can look forward to food from some of New Orleans' finest restaurants at 'The World's Largest Jazz Brunch', performances from over 1,600 world class, local musicians, and an immersion into a unique cultural experience that cannot be replicated anywhere.

Allen Toussaint to Perform at French Quarter Festival

Locals' Day Returns

Allen Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011.The celebrated songwriter, record producer, and musician returns to French Quarter Festival for the first time since 1998. Allen Toussaint will perform on the riverfront Abita Stage on Locals' Day, Thursday, April 9th at 3:45 p.m. In what promises to be an incredible day of music, Mr. Toussaint will perform after the Grammy award-winning Rebirth Brass Band and before the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with very special guests.

The Very Best Live, Local Music Across 23 Stages

Two New Stages in 2015

Year after year, French Quarter Festival is voted 'locals' favorite' while also attracting a tremendous out-of-town audience. A huge part of the appeal is that attendees get a true and authentic New Orleans experience - a broad range of Louisiana artists and a diverse variety of musical styles and genres. Since 1984, French Quarter Festival has been committed to featuring New Orleans' finest artists every day of the festival, on stages all over the French Quarter. The tradition grows in 2015, when French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) unveils two new stages and expands its footprint and musical lineup. The new Outlet Collection at Riverwalk Spanish Plaza stage sponsored by The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and Harrah's New Orleans will take the music across Canal Street with three days of programming. The new Omni Royal Orleans stage located at 500 Royal St. will bring more traditional jazz to the street with performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Visit our website for the complete 2015 lineup, which includes over a dozen new acts.

http://fqfi.org/frenchquarter/schedule/stage

The 2015 French Quarter Festival will feature over 1,600 local artists. Festival organizers remain committed to growing the Musician Sponsorship Program; every dollar donated to the fund goes directly to the artists. In 2014, a total of over 250 individuals, foundations, and businesses signed up to support local musicians by 'adopting an artist.' Sponsors come from all over the United States - from California to Maryland - and are helping to keep French Quarter Festival free for the community.

Musician sponsor Shelby Russ, President and CEO of AOS Solutions, calls sponsorship a  way to enrich quality of life in New Orleans. "French Quarter Fest is one the quintessential celebrations of our abundance of artists in New Orleans. We believe the art that all of those talented individuals produce is the single most important driver of quality of life in this city. AOS has a long-standing commitment to reinvest in the community in which our employees and clients live. We are proud to give our sponsorship and our thanks to Irma Thomas and the entire French Quarter Fest team for enriching our home and our lives."

The Festival is still seeking 2015 sponsorships. Contact Georgia Rhody at (504) 522-5730 or email [email protected] for more information.

Official French Quarter Festival 2015 Posters by Tami Curtis and Simon Hardeveld

Fleurty Girl Unveils New Kermit Ruffins Shirt Designed for French Quarter Festival

For the 2015 poster, renowned local mixed-media artist, Tami Curtis, draws inspiration from New Orleans musical icon, Little Freddie King. Little Freddie King hails from McComb, Mississippi and has a musical career that spans the decades. In the 60's Freddie played with the likes of Babe Stoval, Polka Dot Slim, Guitar Grady, Guitar Ray, Snooks Eaglin, Billy Tate, Harmonica Williams, Boogie Bill Webb, Rev Charles Jacobs (his cousin), Harmonica Slim and Eddie Lang. His 1970 recording, Harmonica Williams and Little Freddie King, is believed to be the first electric blues album recorded in New Orleans. Now into his 70's, Little Freddie has yet to slow down; since 2000 he has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, as well as nearly a dozen European festivals. The musician has just released a new album, Messin' Around Tha Living Room. French Quarter Festival is thrilled to honor him with this vibrant poster.

Once again French Quarter Festival also features a special limited-edition poster created by New Orleans' most well-known French folk-art painter, Simon Hardeveld. Since the early 2000s, Hardeveld has entertained many with his hilarious and colorful paintings that hang in New Orleans restaurants like Boulangerie, Chickie Wah Wah, Lola's, and Joey K's. His pieces whimsically embody the unique culture of this spectacular city.

Last year for the 2014 Satchmo SummerFest, French Quarter Festivals, Inc. partnered with Fleurty Girl to create custom-designed, festival-inspired shirts. The partnership continues in 2015 with the Kermit Ruffins unisex tee, which will sell for $25.  All proceeds help fund the free, community event.

NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

NOLA Navy Week

April 23-29, 2015

Since its earliest years under the American flag, New Orleans has been the site of a major naval presence. Although it is more than 100 miles from the nearest body of open water, the width and depth of the Mississippi River has made our port city accessible for naval vessels of all sizes, types and classes to berth here.

New Orleans' longstanding naval tradition will be celebrated from April 23-29 as NOLA Navy Week returns to the Mississippi Riverfront. During that week, six ships from three nations will line the banks of the river between the French Quarter and the Crescent City Connection bridge. All of these ships will be open to the public for free, on-board tours starting Friday, April 24.

The U.S. Navy is bringing in the USS Wasp, the USS Cole and the USS James E. Williams and the U.S. Coast Guard will be represented by the USCGC Dauntless. The British Royal Navy is represented by the HMS Lancaster and the Royal Canadian Navy will bring in the HMCS Athabaskan.

Other events scheduled that week in conjunction with the event include:

*An official Navy Week Gala held at the National World War II Museum on the night of Friday, April 24.

*A Seafood Cook Off held the morning of Sunday, April 26 at the Spanish Plaza in downtown New Orleans, adjacent to the river and next to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. The Cook Off will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature culinary specialists from each of the participating ships, paired with local chefs.

*A fireworks display over the river on the evening of Monday, April 27, with viewing from Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Algiers Point on the opposite bank.

Other events, including musical concerts, may also be scheduled for the week. Check back at the Navy Week website, www.nolanavyweek.com for the latest updates.

Visitations

All of the ships will be open daily for free general public visitation beginning on Friday, April 24 and ending Tuesday, April 28. Hours of operation vary for each ship throughout the week. Check the schedules for the individual ships in the write-ups below.

Visitors will be allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait in line during peak times. Because these are active military ships, visitors can also expect security screenings prior to boarding.

About the Ships

USS Wasp

The tenth ship to bear the official Navy designation, the Wasp name has a history as long as the United States itself. Warships under that name have seen action and emerged victorious in nearly all conflicts involving the U.S. from the American Revolution through the present. The currently sailing USS Wasp is a U.S. Navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, launched in 1989 and it is the flagship of the Second Fleet, as well as the lead ship of its class.

The Navy-Marine Corps team's newest amphibious warship has as its primary mission the support of a Marine Landing Force. She and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and certain types of jets that provide close air support for the assault force. The Wasp's dimensions are 843 feet long with a beam (width) of 105 feet, which can accommodate the full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles.

It will be docked at 500 Port of New Orleans Place, near Port of New Orleans offices, just upriver from the Crescent City Connection.

 Public open visitation times are:

*Friday, April 24: 12:30-5:00 p.m.

*Saturday, April 25: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

The Cole is an Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer. She was built in March 1996. After the 2000 attack, the Cole was repaired and redeployed in 2003. The Cole is 505 feet long with a beam of 66 feet. The ship's motto, "Glory is the Reward of Valor," pays tribute to its namesake, Marine Sergeant Darrell S. Cole.

The Cole will be berthed in the 1200 block of North Peters Street, adjacent to Woldenberg Park.

Public open visitation times are:

*Friday, April 24: 12:30-5:00 p.m.

*Saturday, April 25: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Sunday, April 26: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Tuesday, April 28: 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.

USS James E Williams

The USS James E. Williams is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer named after Petty Officer 1st Class James Elliot Williams, a Medal of Honor recipient. Its maiden deployment was in May 2006 as part of the Global War on Terrorism Surface Strike Group, and the vessel completed this deployment in October of the same year. In 2007, the USS James E. Williams deployed again as part of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group.

During this deployment, the James E. Williams was contacted by the North Korean cargo vessel, Dai Hong Dan, which had been taken over by Somalian pirates. The ship's crew provided medical assistance to Dai Hong Dan, and safely returned from deployment on December 17, 2007.

The Williams is 509 feet 6 inches long with a beam of 66 feet. It will tie up on the riverfront adjacent to the 1300 block of North Peters Street.

HMCS Athabaskan

The HMCS Athabaskan (DDG 282) is an Iroquois-class destroyer that has served both the Canadian Forces and the Royal Navy since 1972. Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
