FRESH & LOCAL

This will all but certainly be the last week with citrus, but it's all good because Strawberries are in full force! Heather Robertson of Johndale Farms currently has three varieties of the sweet Ponchatoula Strawberries you see her with at market: Festival, Camino Rel, and San Andreas. According to Heather 140,000 of her 150,000 strawberry plants are of the Festival variety, but if you're looking to mix it up ask to try a pint of a different variety this week. Feeling ambitious? Try picking up a Strawberry plant start from Jim Mizell at our Tuesday or Saturday markets, get your own little crop going, and get creative with strawberries! We've been seeing lots of restaurants around town doing just this with green strawberries lately. Former CCFM staffer, longtime CCFM supporter and Meauxbar Executive Chef extraordinaire Kristen Essig recently Instagram'd a picture of unripe green Louisiana strawberries she was quick pickling with caraway and allspice. Or maybe pick up some Strawberry Mint Syrup from Locally Preserved and whip up some tasty Spring cocktails to celebrate the return of nice weather. No matter what you do, you can't go wrong when you're dealing with fresh Louisiana Strawberries!

PICK OF THE WEEK:

COOKING DEMO AND COOKBOOK SIGNING WITH CHEF CAROLYN SHELTON!

We have a special treat at market this Saturday. Chef Carolyn Shelton, cookbook author and expert purveyor of creole cuisine, will be with us for a cookbook signing and cooking demo! She'll be whipping up her signature Creole "Mess" Greens starting at 9 a.m., so be sure to plan accordingly so you can sample this fine dish. In addition to cooking for us, Chef Carolyn will be signing copies of her popular cultural cookbook, Zydeco, Blues n Gumbo, all market long starting at 8 a.m. In the book, Chef Shelton compiles Southwest Louisiana Creole food recipes from some of our state's most prolific Zydeco and Blues artists along with short biographies on the artists and their contributions to the music. From Amadie Ardoin's Couche-Couche to Clifton Chenier's Zydeco Green Beans recipe, this cookbook is bursting at the seams with Southern Louisiana food and music cultural history. Be sure to come on out this Saturday, sample some greens, get a cookbook signed and enjoy the weekend with us!

STORY OF THE WEEK:

KINDNESS PAYS OFF, IN SHRIMP!

We got a call from our very own Shrimp lady, Kay Brandhurst of Four Winds Seafood, after market last Tuesday wondering if we'd found her wallet in the parking lot after market. Staff members went out looking but came up empty handed. When we reported back to Kay that we hadn't found it, she informed us that a nice tourist couple found her wallet in the French Quarter that morning after she had been there dropping off some shrimp for a restaurant (no she wasn't doing any pre-market partying). Later Kay told us that when she went to pick up her wallet, she paid the couple for their kindness in 15 lbs. of fresh jumbo shrimp. It sure pays to be kind, especially in South Louisiana.

TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL

Staff and shoppers alike are still clamoring over the delicious roasted lamb sandwiches that Carrollton Market was dishing out under the GPS tent last week. We can't wait to see what lunch specials they come up with tomorrow. Be sure to come on out and have a plate with us!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

One of the many perks of living in Southern Louisiana: getting to enjoy the best strawberries in the world! Thank goodness for Ponchatoula. Looking for something new to do with those delicious berries? Try this Stuffed Strawberry Muffins recipe using market berries and jam. Bonus points for using local milk and eggs in the recipe!

This photographic tribute displays the rich cultural tradition behind New Orleans' St. Joseph altars and their delicious dishes. While examining the spiritual significance of the altars and the accompanying foods, author Kerri McCaffety also discusses their cultural importance to both Sicilian Americans and the people of New Orleans.

New Orleans is home to one of the largest Sicilian-American populations in the United States, and the community preserves many of its Old World traditions. During the Middle Ages, Sicily went through a period of severe drought. For relief, the people turned to their patron saint, St. Joseph, promising a huge banquet in his honor in return for the needed rain. The tradition evolved and now features today's St. Joseph altars, constructed in thanks for answered prayers. Every year on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph, beautiful and elaborate altars are constructed and piled high with delicious food.

In St. Joseph Altars, Kerri McCaffety combines historical knowledge with luscious photographs of this Sicilian tradition. She took 140 color photographs in thirty different homes to reveal the beauty and majesty of the St. Joseph altars.

St. Joseph Altars is also an heirloom cookbook; it contains twenty recipes for several of the most popular St. Joseph altar dishes. Contributed by both Sicilian grandmothers and New Orleans chefs, these traditional recipes include ciabatta (bread), cioppino (fish stew), and various biscotti (cookies).

It wouldn't be fitting to have a St. Joseph's Day altar without these special "Italian Fig Cookies," featured in Kit Wohl's New Orleans Classic Celebrations.

Chef Emeril Lagasse, Emeril's

"Italian Fig Cookies"

Makes about 4 dozen

For the Filling:

2 cups dried figs, hard tips discarded

 1 cups dried dates, pitted

 1 cup raisins

cup whole almonds, toasted and coarsely chopped

cup whole walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped

  cup orange marmalade

  cup honey

  cup brandy

1 teaspoon finely grated fresh orange zest

1 teaspoon finely grated fresh lemon zest

 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

  teaspoon ground cloves

 For the dough:

 4 cups all-purpose flour

  cup sugar

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder

  teaspoon salt

2 sticks (1 cup) butter, cut into -inch cubes

 1 large egg

  cup milk

 1 tablespoon vanilla

1 egg white beaten with 1 tablespoon water to make an egg wash

 colored sprinkles for decoration

Make the Filling:

1.In a food processor, finely chop the figs, dates, and raisins.

2.Transfer the mixture to a medium bowl, add the remaining filling ingredients, and stir to combine well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.

Make the Dough:

1.In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt and whisk to combine well. Add the butter and blend with your fingertips until most of the mixture resembles coarse meal.

2.In a medium bowl, beat the egg, milk, and vanilla together. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and combine to make a rough dough.

3.Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Cut the dough into 4 pieces, wrap each piece in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 45 minutes.

4.Preheat the oven to 375. Lightly grease 2 large baking sheets. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough, one piece at a time, into a 12-inch square. Cut the dough into 4- by 3-inch rectangles.

5.Spoon 2 tablespoons of filling down the center of each rectangle. Fold the long sides of each rectangle inward to the center to enclose the filling and pinch the edges together firmly to seal. Turn the cookies seam-side down and press gently to flatten the seams.

6.With a floured knife, cut the logs crosswise into 1 1/2 -inch-wide slices and arrange the slices inch apart on the prepared baking sheets. Brush the tops with the egg wash and decorate with the colored sprinkles.

7.Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes, transfer to wire racks to cool, and serve warm or at room temperature.

St Joseph Altars

Amici Ristorante and Bar (3218 Magazine St., 504-300-1250) will create a St. Joseph's Day altar in its dining room, and guests can view it from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, when it will be blessed by a priest. The altar will hold more than 3,500 Italian cookies baked by the family of Amici owners Phil and Jack Rizzuto. There also will be specially baked breads, artichokes, whole fish and fava beans on the display.

"We're trying to bring back the tradition," says Amici chef Chad Matrana, who grew up in the Irish Channel and celebrated St. Joseph's Day with his family.

From noon to 4 p.m. on St. Joseph's Day, Matrana will serve complimentary pasta Milanese to guests visiting the altar and making a donation. Guests can also sample the Italian cookies and claim a fava bean. The food on the altar will be donated to Ozanam Inn (843 Camp St., 504-523-1184). Loyola Theatre
Crimes of the Heart (Opening Night)

The Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will cap off its main stage season with a production of Beth Henley's classic play, "Crimes of the Heart," directed by Loyola's Artemis Preeshl, associate professor of theatre arts.

The 1981 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, "Crimes of the Heart," an adaptation of Chekhov's "The Three Sisters," is a tragicomedy about three Mississippi sisters who encounter the ghosts of their past when Babe, the youngest, shoots her abusive senator-husband. The three McGrath sisters reunite at their grandfather's home. All three, who have committed a crime of the heart, reveal their lurid family secrets -- with a dash of humor -- as they weather the storm of race and class to become closer than ever.

"Crimes of the Heart" will be performed in Marquette Theater at Loyola University, 6363 St. Charles Avenue, March 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will he held on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for students, children and senior citizens.

New Orleans Ballet Association and The NOCCA Institute Co-present

Unin Tanguera

In the full-evening, contemporary tango show

 Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night)

"The performers are simply wonderful. The women are glamourous and shimmering.

The men are virile and debonair."  - Broadway.com

"... taking Tango to places you'd never expect to find it."  - The Village Voice

New Orleans, LA (March 6, 2015) -- The sexy and flirtatious tango takes center stage when Unin Tanguera makes its New Orleans debut with the stylish, full-evening show Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night), acontemporary tango event, hailed by The Oregonian as "extremely seductive and ravishing." The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) and The NOCCA Institute present three performances at NOCCA's Freda Lupin Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21 at 8 PM, and Sunday, March 22 at 2 PM.

Union Tanguera was founded in 2002 by world renowned and trailblazing tango partners Claudia Codega and Esteban Moreno. An innovative, contemporary tango company that fuses Argentine tango with modern dance, French theatrical sensibilities and humor are added to create performances that are sublime.  Based in Lyon, France and Buenos Aires, Argentina, this ensemble of seven virtuoso tango dancers and a quartet of Buenos Aires' finest musicians are reimagining and experimenting with the traditional style of pure tango and creating an "absolutely authentic and polished piece of contemporary theater," raves Society, Austria.

Set in a nightclub at the end of a late-night milonga, Nuit Blanche illuminates the wanderings, desires, instincts and fears that unfold in one sleepless night.  The music for the Nuit Blanche combines traditional tango recordings and original compositions performed live by Buenos Aires-based Quartet Lupanar. Acoustic and electronic sounds converge to create a unique soundtrack, featuring violin, bandoneon, piano and double bass.

About Nuit Blanche

"...a tempestuous evening inhabited by milongueros with movie-star glamour." - The Oregonian

Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) opens on a scene in a cabaret-milonga (nighttime tango club). It is the end of a traditional tango show, when the performers return to their lives as milongueros (milonga goers), joining their audience to continue dancing. A woman and a man improvise in a confined, almost pitch black area while the rhythmic and cyclic bandonen music plays in the background. Out of this intimate environment arises true-to-life tango - traditional in its soul and at times experimental in its form. The dancers weave in and out of their sensual abrazos (embrace) with mixed emotions, including loneliness, hope, despair, friendship, passion, love, celebration and defeat. Nuit Blanche explores a night when social dancing brings people together using tango as their poetic means of communication.

For the concept and parts of the choreography of Nuit Blanche, Codega and Moreno worked in collaboration with the company Modos Vivendi, directed by Rolan Van Lor and Jorge Crudo. Since its premiere in 2010, Nuit Blanche has toured Italy, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States.

Single tickets for Unin Tanguera are $50, and students with a valid student ID can purchase tickets for $35. Tickets may be purchased from the NOBA Box Office at 504-522-0996 or at www.NOBAdance.com  through 4:30 PM on Friday, March 20. The NOCCA Box Office will open at 7 PM Friday and Saturday for sales and will-call, and at 1 PM on Sunday.

Unin Tanguera in the Community

Artistic directors and celebrated master teachers Claudia Codega and Esteban Moreno will teach a tango master class on Thursday, March 19 from 7:15 - 8:15 PM at NOCCA's Chevron Forum, 5 Press Street (across Chartres Street from the main NOCCA campus). Pre-registration is required, and the master class is $15 per person.  Following the class will be a FREE community milonga with members of Unin Tanguera from 8:15 - 10 PM. Dear friends,

As some of you may know, I am trying to put a bookmobile on the streets of New Orleans.

Many of the children of our city do not have access to books or library service and I have by now close to five thousand books, many of them brand new, waiting to be distributed. I also have a splendid  Mercedes Benz ryder bookmobile! All I need is a little help with insurance, registration and maintenance.

If you would like to help, please join us Friday, March 20th at Cafe Istanbul, 2372 St. Claude Ave from 6 to 9 pm.

OR you can contribute online at :

And please feel free to share this link with anyone you know who supports child literacy.

Much love to you all.

"Always ... Patsy Cline" Comes to the Stage Door Canteen at The National WWII Museum

Tickets Now Available for March 6-April 5 Run

NEW ORLEANS - The National WWII Museum's live-theater venue, the Stage Door Canteen, regularly plays host to award-winning shows celebrating the music of the World War II era, but their newest offering will take audiences into the years following the war and celebrate one of country music's first crossover sensations.

"Always ... Patsy Cline," a musical play, complete with down-home country humor and true emotion, includes many of Cline's unforgettable hits such as "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," "Sweet Dreams," "Walkin' After Midnight," and many more.

The show, which runs March 13 - April 5,  is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer, who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. It is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The show takes its title from Cline's letters to Seger, which she signed affectionately "Love Always, Patsy."

Margaret Belton reprises the role of Patsy Cline from a recent award-winning appearance at Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, California.

"As long as I can remember, the music from old records was always one of my favorite sounds," said Belton. "Once I discovered Patsy, things changed. I just wanted to climb into her voice and live in it. The soul and love that pours from her voice made me feel so alive, and I deeply connected with it."

In addition to her many stage and screen credits, Belton also performs regularly as the lead singer of The Patsychords.

Sex Please, We're Sixty Opens this Weekend!!

Mrs. Stancliffe's Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Guests (nearly all women) return year after year.  Her next-door neighbor, the silver-tongued Bud Davis believes that they return to spend time with "Bud the Stud" in romantic liaisons.  The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe, of course, steadfastly denies this. Her other neighbor, Henry Mitchell, a retired chemist, has developed a little blue pill patented under the name "Venusia" after Venus, the goddess of love, to increase the libido in menopausal women, specifically Mrs. Stancliffe.  The only problem is he doesn't know if it works or not. Bud inadvertently gets his hands on some of the "Venusia" pills and the fun begins as the guests arrive.

Double Edge Theatre makes its regional debut with The Grand Parade-an amalgamation of movement, text, and fleeting images that evoke the mythology of the 20th century. Equal parts circus, vaudeville, and magical realism, this performance perfectly encompasses humanity's simultaneous predilection towards creation and destruction in the pursuit of progress.

This free event celebrates the cultural diversity of New Orleans and the melting pot of traditions that gave rise to our unique music. We feature the music and dance of Africa, the Caribbean, the American Gulf South and beyond in this two-day, family-friendly festival.

This year we're highlighting New Orleans' famous Mardi Gras Indians. In honor of the recent passing of the great Emile "Bo" Dollis of the Wild Magnolias - one of the originators of the modern sound of New Orleans music - we'll present the Wild Mags featuring his longtime collaborator, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux along with Bo's son, Bo Dollis, Jr.

We'll also present the red-hot Mardi Gras Indian band Cha Wa. And Chief Smiley Ricks - a longtime stalwart of New Orleans' Mardi Gras Indian scene - will make his Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival debut.

Also appearing will be two of New Orleans' hottest brass bands: the Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band, and the world-traveling Hot 8 Brass Band.

Our Caribbean connection this year comes with a performance by the young Cuban drummer and bandleader Yissy Garcia. The Cuban-born, New Orleans-based percussionist Alexey Marti will appear with his band. And the percussionist Michael Skinkus will lead his Afro-Caribbean sacred music group, Moyuba.

We'll explore traditional and modern African dance with performances by the troupes Kumbuka, N'Fungola Sibo, Tekrema, Culu and N'Kafu. Making its first Congo Square Festival appearance is an African dance troupe that's new on the scene, the Nkiruka Drum and Dance Ensemble.

We'll also host our annual "battle" of Mardi Gras Indian tribes. As a special treat, the New Orleans conscious hip-hop artist Truth Universal will collaborate with the Indian tribes Guardians of the Flame and Fi Yi Yi.

Africa Brass, purveyors of progressive, African-inspired music, will return to our stage. And with a nod to contemporary soul music, we'll present the fast-rising New Orleans band Tank & da Bangas, plus one of our perennial favorites, Bamboula 2000.

As always, we'll host a large Arts Market with dozens of vendors featuring locally-produced, hand-made art and crafts in a variety of media. And we'll have great food from several local vendors showcasing the food of Africa, the Caribbean and New Orleans.

The festival takes place in conjunction with the fourth annual Class Got Brass competition for Louisiana middle and high school brass bands - who will perform on Sunday afternoon in a second-line parade that's also a contest. The winners will get more than $20,000 worth of instruments for their schools' band programs.

Infant Massage is a parent enrichment program that provides loving touch from the start of a baby's life. It incorporates techniques that help promote social and emotional development, brain development and touch, adaptations for children with special needs, and bonding and attachment with parents and caregivers.

According to Guilbeau, early psychological and sensory input is essential in facilitating the development of all infants. Infant massage contains critical elements of bonding including eye to eye contact, smiling, soothing sounds, caressing, smell, and mutual interaction.

Benefits for the baby: Enhances bonding and attachment; promotes social, emotional and cognitive development; reduces gas and colic; strengthens and regulates primary organ systems; regulates behavioral patterns and promotes sleep.

Benefits for parents: Enhances communication and emotional ties; promotes better understanding of infant cues; helps parents unwind and relax; provides quality one-on-one interaction; gives fathers a special time to connect and bond;

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival

 is April 9th-12th

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival presented by Chevron is April 9th-April 12th, 2015! Locals and tourism officials call French Quarter Festival 'the kickoff to festival season in New Orleans.' What started as a neighborhood festival and 'locals' event' has grown into the largest showcase of Louisiana music and food in the world, with an economic impact of over $251 million. Last year, Huffington Post named French Quarter Festival the "one thing to do in Louisiana."

In 2015, attendees can look forward to food from some of New Orleans' finest restaurants at 'The World's Largest Jazz Brunch', performances from over 1,600 world class, local musicians, and an immersion into a unique cultural experience that cannot be replicated anywhere.

Locals' Day Returns

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011.The celebrated songwriter, record producer, and musician returns to French Quarter Festival for the first time since 1998. Allen Toussaint will perform on the riverfront Abita Stage on Locals' Day, Thursday, April 9th at 3:45 p.m. In what promises to be an incredible day of music, Mr. Toussaint will perform after the Grammy award-winning Rebirth Brass Band and before the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with very special guests.

The Very Best Live, Local Music Across 23 Stages

Two New Stages in 2015

Year after year, French Quarter Festival is voted 'locals' favorite' while also attracting a tremendous out-of-town audience. A huge part of the appeal is that attendees get a true and authentic New Orleans experience - a broad range of Louisiana artists and a diverse variety of musical styles and genres. Since 1984, French Quarter Festival has been committed to featuring New Orleans' finest artists every day of the festival, on stages all over the French Quarter. The tradition grows in 2015, when French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) unveils two new stages and expands its footprint and musical lineup. The new Outlet Collection at Riverwalk Spanish Plaza stage sponsored by The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and Harrah's New Orleans will take the music across Canal Street with three days of programming. The new Omni Royal Orleans stage located at 500 Royal St. will bring more traditional jazz to the street with performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Visit our website for the complete 2015 lineup, which includes over a dozen new acts.

http://fqfi.org/frenchquarter/schedule/stage

The 2015 French Quarter Festival will feature over 1,600 local artists. Festival organizers remain committed to growing the Musician Sponsorship Program; every dollar donated to the fund goes directly to the artists. In 2014, a total of over 250 individuals, foundations, and businesses signed up to support local musicians by 'adopting an artist.' Sponsors come from all over the United States - from California to Maryland - and are helping to keep French Quarter Festival free for the community.

Musician sponsor Shelby Russ, President and CEO of AOS Solutions, calls sponsorship a  way to enrich quality of life in New Orleans. "French Quarter Fest is one the quintessential celebrations of our abundance of artists in New Orleans. We believe the art that all of those talented individuals produce is the single most important driver of quality of life in this city. AOS has a long-standing commitment to reinvest in the community in which our employees and clients live. We are proud to give our sponsorship and our thanks to Irma Thomas and the entire French Quarter Fest team for enriching our home and our lives."

The Festival is still seeking 2015 sponsorships. Contact Georgia Rhody at (504) 522-5730 or email [email protected] for more information.

Official French Quarter Festival 2015 Posters by Tami Curtis and Simon Hardeveld

Fleurty Girl Unveils New Kermit Ruffins Shirt Designed for French Quarter Festival

For the 2015 poster, renowned local mixed-media artist, Tami Curtis, draws inspiration from New Orleans musical icon, Little Freddie King. Little Freddie King hails from McComb, Mississippi and has a musical career that spans the decades. In the 60's Freddie played with the likes of Babe Stoval, Polka Dot Slim, Guitar Grady, Guitar Ray, Snooks Eaglin, Billy Tate, Harmonica Williams, Boogie Bill Webb, Rev Charles Jacobs (his cousin), Harmonica Slim and Eddie Lang. His 1970 recording, Harmonica Williams and Little Freddie King, is believed to be the first electric blues album recorded in New Orleans. Now into his 70's, Little Freddie has yet to slow down; since 2000 he has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, as well as nearly a dozen European festivals. The musician has just released a new album, Messin' Around Tha Living Room. French Quarter Festival is thrilled to honor him with this vibrant poster.

Once again French Quarter Festival also features a special limited-edition poster created by New Orleans' most well-known French folk-art painter, Simon Hardeveld. Since the early 2000s, Hardeveld has entertained many with his hilarious and colorful paintings that hang in New Orleans restaurants like Boulangerie, Chickie Wah Wah, Lola's, and Joey K's. His pieces whimsically embody the unique culture of this spectacular city.

Last year for the 2014 Satchmo SummerFest, French Quarter Festivals, Inc. partnered with Fleurty Girl to create custom-designed, festival-inspired shirts. The partnership continues in 2015 with the Kermit Ruffins unisex tee, which will sell for $25.  All proceeds help fund the free, community event.

The show's subject matter is often personal: In addition to three rare self-portraits, depictions of family members and friends are also included. Works touch upon three notable themes of Degas' oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and the ballet.  Enriching the exhibition are a selection of more than forty works on paper of well-known artists, many of whom were friends of Degas.

NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
