D1Baseball.com unveiled its new rankings Monday morning and the Tigers (21-3, 4-2 SEC) sit in the top spot, a jump of two spots.

The coaches poll, presented by USA Today, also has LSU in the catbird seat for the first time this season after they garnered 21 first-place votes -- three times more than No. 2 Texas A&M.

The Tigers also stayed No. 1 in the Baseball America poll for the third straight week and moved up a spot to No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings behind that crew's new No. 1, Texas A&M.

After four years at the French Quarter gastropub  Sylvain, chef Alex Harrell left in mid-fall 2014 to open his own restaurant. Named for his mother,  Angeline (1032 Chartres St.) will open in the Hotel Provincial Tuesday, filling the space formerly occupied by chef Scott Boswell's Stella!.

Harrell's menu focuses on Gulf seafood and modern takes on Southern cuisine, and there are some Italian and Mediterranean accents. Harrell says Southern food has been stereotyped as, "heavy, fried everything, over-cooked vegetables and pork everywhere." His vision is a cleaner, brighter, fresher one, and he finds some common ground with some Italian cooking. He explains the concept through his butter bean tortellini.

"The butter bean tortellini personifies our philosophy," he says. "It's a take on a traditional Italian dish from Bologna, tortellini en brodo. We view it through a Southern lens. The tortellini are filled with butter beans and ricotta and lemon zest and herbs brighten it. Red eye gravy is something you see in the South, but typically on biscuits in the morning. We make a broth so there's the flavors of ham, coffee and a touch of bourbon."

The opening menu also features Southen-fried quail over hoe cake with local honey and house-made hot sauce, confit duck leg with sausage, farro verde, currants, pecans and sprouts and Mississippi rabbit Milanese with smoked carrot puree, spoon bread, bacon, braised collard greens and tomato gravy. There also is a charcuterie board with cured meats, pickles, cheese, cherry confiture and grain mustard. The menu will focus on local, seasonal produce and be updated often, Harrell says.

Harrell grew up in Alabama and got his first taste of restaurant work one summer at a Florida beach seafood restaurant. Professionally, he worked locally with chef Susan Spicer at  Bayona, with chef Gerard Maras at Gerard's Downtown and at  Ralph's on the Park

Farewell to Rocking R Dairy

Fresh & Local

After seven years of being a vendor at the CCFM, this Tuesday will be Bill Ryals of Rocking R Dairy's last market. Bill joined our CCFM family to sell the goat milk and chèvre produced on his family's Tylertown, MS farm. Requests from chefs and shoppers led to product line expansion - cow milk and cheeses including cheddar, Asiago, Creole cream cheese and cheese curds, as well as different cuts of goat, beef and pork. Farmers markets help fuel this sort of business incubation and growth, and farmers like Bill are what make shopping at farmers markets so special. In the future, Bill and his son Blake will focus on producing organic milk for wholesale accounts and meat production for the Link Restaurant Group and others. Come by this Tuesday to stock your fridge and freezer with Rocking R products, give Bill a big hug and raise a cup of milk to local family farmers. We wish the Ryals all the best in their future endeavors. We miss them already!

Pick of the Week:

Book Signing!

We're pleased to welcome authors Addie K. and Jeremy Martin back to market for another book signing of their fantastic book Southeast Louisiana Food: A Seasoned Tradition. This book celebrates and explores the rich history of the Cajun people, their cuisine, and the fisheries industries as well as examines the present and future trends for each. Ten delicious recipes accompany the stories and photographs from our beloved food region. If you didn't have a chance to see them at market last year, be sure to come on out and get yourself a copy!

Tuesday's Green Plate Special

It's been a treat having Carrollton Market with us every Tuesday under the GPS tent. This week they'll be dishing out some market fresh gazpacho, so be sure to come on out and grab a cup or two!

Recipe of the Week

We're fortunate enough to have beautiful ripe tomatoes at all of our markets almost year round thanks to our two green house tomato vendors, Tomott's and Cajun Growers. We like the unripened ones too though. How do you like to cook green tomatoes? Try out this Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade recipe courtesy of Chef Kenneth Smith for a tasty way to put those green tomatoes and CSF shrimp to use.

Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade

Both our fantastic greenhouse tomato vendors, The Ledet's and Tomott's Farm bring some beautiful red, ripe tomatoes to our weekly markets. They also brings some unripe ones perfect for these Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade. Pick up a few this week for this tasty recipe!

green tomatoIngredients

Remoulade sauce

1/2 cup Creole or other coarse mustard

1/3 cup ketchup (preferably Heinz)

1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

1-1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

1-1/2 teaspoons paprika

1/2 teaspoon white pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste

salt

1/3 cup olive oil

1/4 cup chopped celery

1-1/2 teaspoons chopped scallion

Fried green tomatoes

5 tablespoons vegetable oil or very light olive oil

1 egg

1 cup milk

2 slices green tomatoes, 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick

1 cup cornmeal, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper

a handful of mixed greens or lettuce

6 to 8 medium shrimp, boiled, peeled and chilled

4 tablespoons remoulade sauce

Directions

To prepare Remoulade Sauce: In a bowl, combine mustard, ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, paprika, white pepper, and cayenne pepper; mix well. Season with salt. Slowly add oil while whisking vigorously. If needed, add more cayenne pepper and salt, adjusting to taste. Add celery and scallion; mix well. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 30 minutes.

To prepare Fried Green Tomatoes: Heat oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Whisk together egg and milk. Dip tomato slices in egg mixture, then coat with cornmeal. Carefully place tomato slices in sauté pan and cook slowly until golden brown on bottom, then turn and brown the other side. (Note: If tomatoes are cooked too quickly, the outside will brown before the inside is cooked.)

To serve, arrange greens on an individual serving plate. Place fried tomato slices next to each other on the bed of greens. Top each slice with three or four shrimp. Spoon remoulade sauce over shrimp.

 Serves 1

French Market, New

Dear Friends of the French Market, I'm sending this notice to a few of our friends and partners to ask you to join us if you can  Wednesday for 20 minutes, 1 hour,  or 2 hours any time between 12 noon and 4 p.m., depending on your acting abilities and capacity for repetition, and ability to be out of the office for that long!    We have several fun opportunities to play a background or a foreground role in this shoot. I'll be pretty specific about some of the close-ups so tell me if that is of interest, so I can schedule you and give you some idea of what we will ask of you. If you however just want to be in a group shot, that's great too-let me know.

Beyond the crowd shots inside the Jazz Park and in Dutch Alley, I am seeking 3-6 people who can be flexible, have some general acting experience and comfort level on camera, to be our "close up" shots during a walking tour shot and some shopping scenes in the Farmers Market.

To be clear, we are not offering any payment for this...sorry!!!!  This is just for the love.... of the French Market and your fair city-and yourself...because you might want to have people say, "hey...I saw you on that WWLTV commercial for the French Market!!!"

Please let me know if you can join us, and please tell your beautiful, photogenic family and friends, too!

Dear French Market Merchants and Partners:

We are updating our 2012 WWLTV commercial (see link below) with some new shots and new language.  We'll be airing the current commercial in spring to promote the Creole Tomato Festival (we will add a Creole Tomato Fest "donut" to the back of them) and then in summer, air the new one w/ new images.

We'd love your help in being part of the "crowd" in one or more of these ways:

1.       Being in the "Walking Tour" shots with Jazz Park Ranger James Glass between 12 noon and 12:30 p.m. outside the Jazz Park Visitor Center in Dutch Alley.

2.       Being part of the audience enjoying the Tornado Brass Band inside the Jazz Park Visitor Center between 1:00 and 1:20 p.m.

3.       Being in the secondline between 1:30 and 1:50 p.m. in Dutch Alley.

4.       Shopping at the Farmers Market (and being willing to be filmed close up) for scenes with vendors between 2:00 and 2:45 p.m.

5.       Watching the cooking demonstration at 3 p.m. at the Farmers Market.

6.       Being part of the general atmosphere at the Farmers Market between 2:00 and 2:45 p.m.

If you wish to participate, you do NOT "need" to RSVP but it would be helpful to know if you plan to be there so I can assess on Monday/Tuesday what we still need.

The weather looks to be sunny and a high of  79 degrees so dress appropriately-be comfortable! We need all ages, sizes, and lots of smiles and energy and bright colors.  No logos, stripes, "uniforms" (Saints items) are allowed.

You will each need to sign a release on-site noting you are okay w/ being filmed and used in the commercial. I will have these with me.

The commercial is a fast :30 piece (as you will see below) and we won't know for a few months after filming who may be in the final piece, but we can inform everyone who participates re: the final piece and send the video via Youtube, as was the case in 2012:

YOUNG AUDIENCES CHARTER SCHOOL TO HOST OPEN HOUSES

Only arts-integrated elementary charter school on the Jefferson Parish Westbank

invites community to Open House March 24 and 28

Young Audiences Charter School: Academic Excellence with an Artistic Edge

The Young Audiences Charter School at Kate Middleton invites prospective students along with their families to attend an open house session to learn more about the school on Thursday, March 24 at 6:30 pm or Saturday, March 28 at 10am. The sessions will be held at Young Audiences Charter School, 1407 Virgil Street in Gretna.

"We are pleased to be a part of this diverse community and to continue to provide a high-quality, open enrollment, arts integrated education for all children, said School Leader Folwell Dunbar. Young Audiences Charter School also invites prospective students and families to schedule a tour of the school if they cannot attend either of the Open Houses.

Recent research shows that students at schools with an arts integrated curriculum scored higher on standardized tests and academic measures than those at other types of schools, including academic magnet schools.  Additionally, students highly involved in the arts are more likely to have improved grades, better standardized test scores, and increased class participation.

Young Audiences Charter School at Kate Middleton is open to any Jefferson Parish student entering Kindergarten through 5th grade. Each following academic year, the school will add one grade to serve students in grades K-8 by Fall 2018.

Parents are encouraged to visit the school's website www.yacharterschool.org, call (504) 304-6332 or e-mail [email protected]g for enrollment information.

Conversations with the Artist:

March Steinway Concert Features New Orleans Pianist Tom Hook

METAIRIE, LA - Tom Hook, a local pianist, will discuss and perform the music of the American Civil War at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

"Conversations with the Artist" is a musical program sponsored by the Hall Piano Company, the Steinway Society of New Orleans and the Jefferson Parish Libraries. The March event is the second in the series.

Tom Hook began his career in Kansas City, Missouri. For much of the 1980s and 1990s, Hook was involved with the Delta Queen Steamboat Company, working as an entertainer and entertainment director of various steamboats and cruises. Currently, Hook performs on the American Eagle and Queen of the Mississippi riverboats with his one-man historical drama "Riverman!" He regularly performs his tribute to Louis Prima at the World War II Museum's Stage Door Canteen.

For "Conversations with the Artist," Hook will present a program of music from the Civil War period (1861-1865) from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, emphasizing not only the patriotic sentiments of the day but also the poignant, tender and comical music of the soldiers in the field and the loved ones waiting at home.

Author Event!

Terry Rappold Talks About Healthy Living,

Tai Chi American Style

METAIRIE, LA - Terry Rappold, author of a new work of nonfiction titled Tai Chi American Style, will discuss and sign copies of the book at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Books will be available for those who would like to purchase them.

Rappold says that Tai Chi American Style was written to provide a simple guide to healthy living for those leading fast paced, mentally challenging and often physically exhausting lifestyles. The guide draws its information predominately from the 3,000 year old Chinese art of Tai Chi.

Within the text, Rappold invites readers to have a mind shift, perceiving daily activity and movement as exercise. He explains how to "actively" move both the external physical body and internal energetic body, creating greater Chi (vital life force circulation). Basic anatomy and physiology of the human body will be explored as related to the energetic body.

Rappold presents ways for the body to breathe, as well as exercises geared toward developing proper body alignment, muscle strength, joint expansion and overall relaxation. A sequential set of movements called the "Energy Ball Form" will be introduced. The study of the energetic body using the art of Chi Kung will be presented along with exercises for practice and development. Diet is discussed as part of the conversion of the essences of food into vital life force.

Rappold says his intention is to present the information in a simple, introductory format that is easy to read, can be easily practiced and at the same time provides a tool that can be used to establish a life-long journey into the world of improving physical, mental and emotional health.

Terry Rappold studied Tai Chi and the Healing Arts since the late 1980s. In 1983, he contracted rheumatic fever and shortly thereafter began his search for healthy ways to manage the disease. He says Tai Chi provided the most positive results. After several years of continued study and practice, Rappold began to share his experiences in the class setting. Within a few years he was teaching in several Southeast Louisiana area Hospital and Wellness Centers.

  Sandbar Jazz

March 25, Dick Hyman

On March 25, UNO's Jazz @ the Sandbar welcomes pianist Dick Hyman, who will be performing with UNO Jazz student combos under the direction of Steve Masakowski and Dwight Fitch.

Dick Hyman has lent his talents as a pianist, arranger and composer to radio, the recording studio and movies, including more than a dozen Woody Allen films. He's recorded so many albums that he's been honored as one of New York's all-time 'Most Valued Players' by the Musicians' Union.

Hyman's busy musical career began in the early 1950s. He has since recorded over 100 albums under his own name and is a prolific composer of orchestral and chamber works, including choral cantatas, Broadway musical scores, ballet scores, string quartets and sonatas for various instruments.

Hyman's knowledge of American popular song is encyclopedic. In an interview with Ken Dryden on allaboutjazz.com, he recalls that he learned most of the songs as a young pianist jobbing around New York, playing at country clubs and hotel ballrooms. Hyman says, "There was a core of musicians who knew all the tunes. That meant you had to be familiar with every well-known musical, starting back in the 20s. You were expected to know everything, the pianist especially."

Dick credits his work as a studio musician on radio and television in the 1950s, when he had to shift from one style to another throughout the day for the various shows, as his best musical education. He notes, "Exceptional sight-reading and impromptu composition were essential survival skills."

Check out this VIDEO of Hyman as he demonstrates the evolution of jazz piano styles.

Now 87, Hyman continues to perform solo and collaborative concerts in the US and Canada. In addition to Jazz @ the Sandbar, Hyman will be appearing at New Orleans' Snug Harbor on March 25 (solo) and March 26 (with clarinetist Evan Christopher). For more on Hyman, visit his website at www.dickhyman.com.

WHAT: The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James. Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.

WHO: Directed by Ji Un Choi, featuring Kate Adair and Gavin Robinson.
WHERE: Playhouse NOLA, 3214 Burgundy St.

WHEN: March 26-29; Thu 7pm, Fri & Sat 8pm, Sun 6pm.
HOW: Free or by donation, at the door. Reservations [email protected].

Playhouse NOLA presents Jeffrey Hatcher's adaptation of Henry James's classic Victorian ghost story, The Turn of the Screw. Hatcher's efficient but evocative adaptation uses just two actors to recreate James's vividly Gothic world. KATE ADAIR plays the governess who undergoes a shocking transformative journey. GAVIN ROBINSON portrays all other characters.

Director JI UB CHOI chose The Turn of the Screw in consideration of the intimacy of the venue as well as of the tale's ambiguity. Choi states, "As this story concerns desire, haunting, and madness, it is a perfect fit for New Orleans - a city known for its eccentricities, ghosts, and affinity for the extraordinary."

A passion project for all involved, the production features costumes by TRISH GORMAN, original artwork by SENAN O'CONNOR, graphics by MELANIE INNIS, and a score by Hatcher. Co-producer DUSTAN COSTINE opened Playhouse NOLA in the fall of 2014, to provide an arts space accessible both to the downtown community and to artists unaffiliated with the established theatre circles of New Orleans.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

French Quarter, March 26, 2015 (5pm-7pm)

Where's Stella?

In celebration of Tennessee Williams' birthday, the public is invited to join us for an improv performance on the streets of the French Quarter. In honor of "A Streetcar Named Desire", Stanley is searching for Stella on his route to deliver moonshine. Beginning at Jackson Square on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 5pm, Stanley will load the moonshine in the trunk of a 1926 Model T Ford pickup and be followed by the Young Pinstripe Jazz Band with a 2nd line to Pat O'Brien's.

Stanley will shout up to the balcony for "Stellaaaaa!" but he seems to have just missed her and he'll continue his moonshine delivery route along Royal and Bourbon Streets, stopping at the Monteleone Hotel to meet up with festival participants. The performance concludes at Backspace Bar & Kitchen, a literary themed bar located at 139 Chartres Street. Here, Stanley finds Stella, played by Courtney Boe, and delivers the moonshine. The Young Pinstripe Jazz Band will play prohibition era jazz music in the 100 block of Chartres. While at Backspace, shot girls will serve moonshine from Buffalo Trace Distillery. The birthday celebration continues at the Hotel Monteleone with celebrity performances and birthday cake at 6:30 p.m. Go to tennesseewilliams.net for tickets to that event and more info.

Hurricane Promotions Proudly Presents,

THE MIDTOWN MEN - 4 Stars From The Original Broadway Cast of Jersey Boys

New Orleans, LA - On Friday, March 27 at 7:00 PM, the sounds of the '60s will come alive at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, starring the MIDTOWN MEN singing their favorite hits from the Beatles, The Rascals, The Turtles, Motown, The Four Seasons and more.

Critics are calling THE MIDTOWN MEN:

"Terrific"- Sirius/XM         "Inspired!" - NY Daily News

"The real deal!" - Tommy James

"Jump and jive all-american '60s sound." - Colorado Reporter-Herald

They took Broadway by storm in one of the biggest hits of all-time.  Now on their 5th national tour,      THE MIDTOWN MEN are bringing their magic to audiences everywhere.  This sensational production reunites Four Stars from the Original Broadway Cast of Jersey Boys. Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award nominee J. Robert Spencer star in this one-of-a-kind concert experience celebrating the music that defined the '60s.

These talented entertainers shared the Broadway stage for over a thousand performances in the mega-hit Jersey Boys. Now, as The Midtown Men, they've thrilled crowds on concert stages and symphony halls across the continent, and have delighted television audiences with performances on "Good Morning America," "Access Hollywood," "Katie," and "The Chew." The Men recently released their first radio single, "All Alone On Christmas," written and produced by rock icon and Sopranos and Lilyhammer star Steven Van Zandt and backed by Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. They were honored to perform the song at the White House for the National Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington DC.

The group is excited to announce the debut of their first public television concert special. Taped at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's majestic Prudential Hall in Newark, N.J. in May 2014, the program debuted in the NYC area on NJTV and WNET in late November and is currently airing on stations across the country.

The Men are also pleased to announce an upcoming recording project with rock superstar Tommy James, set to begin in early 2015.

Don't miss this electrifying and soulful new production with its top-shelf choreography, incredible vocal performances and legendary onstage chemistry.  In addition to the live MIDTOWN MEN performance, guests will be treated to the musical styling of New Orleans' own Yat Pack.

Tickets to this special, one-night only event are on sale now and can be purchased through Ticketmaster, Saenger Theater Box Office, or Charge by Phone 1-800-745-3000

ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE

 Fri-Sat

DINNER AND SHOW

 (6:00pm Seating 8:00pm Showtime)

Sun

BRUNCH

 (11:00am Seating 1:00pm Showtime)

"Always ... Patsy Cline" Comes to the Stage Door Canteen at The National WWII Museum

Tickets Now Available for March 21-April 5 Run

NEW ORLEANS - The National WWII Museum's live-theater venue, the Stage Door Canteen, regularly plays host to award-winning shows celebrating the music of the World War II era, but their newest offering will take audiences into the years following the war and celebrate one of country music's first crossover sensations.

"Always ... Patsy Cline," a musical play, complete with down-home country humor and true emotion, includes many of Cline's unforgettable hits such as "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," "Sweet Dreams," "Walkin' After Midnight," and many more.

The show, which runs March 21 - April 5,  is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer, who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. It is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The show takes its title from Cline's letters to Seger, which she signed affectionately "Love Always, Patsy."

Margaret Belton reprises the role of Patsy Cline from a recent award-winning appearance at Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, California.

"As long as I can remember, the music from old records was always one of my favorite sounds," said Belton. "Once I discovered Patsy, things changed. I just wanted to climb into her voice and live in it. The soul and love that pours from her voice made me feel so alive, and I deeply connected with it."

In addition to her many stage and screen credits, Belton also performs regularly as the lead singer of The Patsychords.

Sunday 3/29 at 5pm: Ben Schenck, Clarinet

Ben-216x216

Ben Schenck will explore the sonic/acoustic properties of the Marigny Opera House with his clarinet. After cutting his teeth with bands including The Treme Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins Jam Session and the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, Ben formed the Panorama Jazz and Panorama Brass Bands which have been his primary channels of musical expression for the past 20 years. Ben's normal repertoire is a collage of folkloric musics from the Caribbean, Latin America and Eastern Europe as well as New Orleans jazz. On March 29th at the Marigny Opera House, his performance will depart significantly from those sounds and partly draw from his Quaker background of Silent Worship. Free for all; donations gladly accepted.

PALM SUNDAY SECOND LINE- ONLY IN NEW ORLEANS (New Orleans, LA) 3/23/2015. St. Anna's Episcopal Church will once again offer a unique New Orleans experience of the traiditional Palm Sunday service held as a holy day by world wide Christians. For the past ten years the little stone church located at 1313 Esplanade Ave in the Treme has hosted a Palm Sunday Second Line style procession through the Treme and Marigny neighborhoods led by internationally known Storyville Stompers Brass Band. The procession will start with palm blessing at 10:00 a.m. The procession is immediately followed by a worship service recalling the Passion Of Jesus Christ. As the diverse church boasts, "All are welcomed. None are shunned." After the service festivities ensue. Only in New Orleans!

St. Anna's is well known to New Orleanians as the "Murder Board Church" featured on local and national news. It is also one of the most active congregations hosting a six day a week after school enrichment program for at-risk youth, the last Free Clinic in the city, a food pantry for HIV/AIDS patients in transition, and the Memorial to the Victims of Violence. One expression of the active nature of the growing congregation is the Palm Procession which finds its way through neighborhood streets with a uniquely New Orleans flavor.

It incorporates techniques that help promote social and emotional development, brain development and touch, adaptations for children with special needs, and bonding and attachment with parents and caregivers.

According to Guilbeau, early psychological and sensory input is essential in facilitating the development of all infants. Infant massage contains critical elements of bonding including eye to eye contact, smiling, soothing sounds, caressing, smell, and mutual interaction.

Benefits for the baby: Enhances bonding and attachment; promotes social, emotional and cognitive development; reduces gas and colic; strengthens and regulates primary organ systems; regulates behavioral patterns and promotes sleep.

Benefits for parents: Enhances communication and emotional ties; promotes better understanding of infant cues; helps parents unwind and relax; provides quality one-on-one interaction; gives fathers a special time to connect and bond;

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival

 is April 9th-12th

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival presented by Chevron is April 9th-April 12th, 2015! Locals and tourism officials call French Quarter Festival 'the kickoff to festival season in New Orleans.' What started as a neighborhood festival and 'locals' event' has grown into the largest showcase of Louisiana music and food in the world, with an economic impact of over $251 million. Last year, Huffington Post named French Quarter Festival the "one thing to do in Louisiana."

In 2015, attendees can look forward to food from some of New Orleans' finest restaurants at 'The World's Largest Jazz Brunch', performances from over 1,600 world class, local musicians, and an immersion into a unique cultural experience that cannot be replicated anywhere.

Allen Toussaint to Perform at French Quarter Festival

Locals' Day Returns

Allen Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011.The celebrated songwriter, record producer, and musician returns to French Quarter Festival for the first time since 1998. Allen Toussaint will perform on the riverfront Abita Stage on Locals' Day, Thursday, April 9th at 3:45 p.m. In what promises to be an incredible day of music, Mr. Toussaint will perform after the Grammy award-winning Rebirth Brass Band and before the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with very special guests.

The Very Best Live, Local Music Across 23 Stages

Two New Stages in 2015

Year after year, French Quarter Festival is voted 'locals' favorite' while also attracting a tremendous out-of-town audience. A huge part of the appeal is that attendees get a true and authentic New Orleans experience - a broad range of Louisiana artists and a diverse variety of musical styles and genres. Since 1984, French Quarter Festival has been committed to featuring New Orleans' finest artists every day of the festival, on stages all over the French Quarter. The tradition grows in 2015, when French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) unveils two new stages and expands its footprint and musical lineup. The new Outlet Collection at Riverwalk Spanish Plaza stage sponsored by The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and Harrah's New Orleans will take the music across Canal Street with three days of programming. The new Omni Royal Orleans stage located at 500 Royal St. will bring more traditional jazz to the street with performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Visit our website for the complete 2015 lineup, which includes over a dozen new acts.

http://fqfi.org/frenchquarter/schedule/stage

The 2015 French Quarter Festival will feature over 1,600 local artists. Festival organizers remain committed to growing the Musician Sponsorship Program; every dollar donated to the fund goes directly to the artists. In 2014, a total of over 250 individuals, foundations, and businesses signed up to support local musicians by 'adopting an artist.' Sponsors come from all over the United States - from California to Maryland - and are helping to keep French Quarter Festival free for the community.

Musician sponsor Shelby Russ, President and CEO of AOS Solutions, calls sponsorship a  way to enrich quality of life in New Orleans. "French Quarter Fest is one the quintessential celebrations of our abundance of artists in New Orleans. We believe the art that all of those talented individuals produce is the single most important driver of quality of life in this city. AOS has a long-standing commitment to reinvest in the community in which our employees and clients live. We are proud to give our sponsorship and our thanks to Irma Thomas and the entire French Quarter Fest team for enriching our home and our lives."

The Festival is still seeking 2015 sponsorships. Contact Georgia Rhody at (504) 522-5730 or email [email protected] for more information.

Official French Quarter Festival 2015 Posters by Tami Curtis and Simon Hardeveld

Fleurty Girl Unveils New Kermit Ruffins Shirt Designed for French Quarter Festival

For the 2015 poster, renowned local mixed-media artist, Tami Curtis, draws inspiration from New Orleans musical icon, Little Freddie King. Little Freddie King hails from McComb, Mississippi and has a musical career that spans the decades. In the 60's Freddie played with the likes of Babe Stoval, Polka Dot Slim, Guitar Grady, Guitar Ray, Snooks Eaglin, Billy Tate, Harmonica Williams, Boogie Bill Webb, Rev Charles Jacobs (his cousin), Harmonica Slim and Eddie Lang. His 1970 recording, Harmonica Williams and Little Freddie King, is believed to be the first electric blues album recorded in New Orleans. Now into his 70's, Little Freddie has yet to slow down; since 2000 he has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, as well as nearly a dozen European festivals. The musician has just released a new album, Messin' Around Tha Living Room. French Quarter Festival is thrilled to honor him with this vibrant poster.

Once again French Quarter Festival also features a special limited-edition poster created by New Orleans' most well-known French folk-art painter, Simon Hardeveld. Since the early 2000s, Hardeveld has entertained many with his hilarious and colorful paintings that hang in New Orleans restaurants like Boulangerie, Chickie Wah Wah, Lola's, and Joey K's. His pieces whimsically embody the unique culture of this spectacular city.

Last year for the 2014 Satchmo SummerFest, French Quarter Festivals, Inc. partnered with Fleurty Girl to create custom-designed, festival-inspired shirts. The partnership continues in 2015 with the Kermit Ruffins unisex tee, which will sell for $25.  All proceeds help fund the free, community event.

NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
