Rebuilding America Street
What Is the Event?
NOAHH will begin its commemoration of the decennial anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita through a ten-day, ten-home blitz build in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International's AmeriCorps Build-A-Thon. Along with the blitz build, NOAHH will host neighborhood revitalization and cleanup efforts.
What's It All About?
2015 will mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the failure of the federal levees, and the destruction these events wrought across the Gulf Coast. The city of New Orleans suffered incredible loss, but even before all of the flood waters had receded, people had begun the process of rebuilding and recovery. After ten years of hard work, the city has much to show and much more to be done. Build-A-Thon is intended to honor the loss and grief the storms brought to the city while sending a message of hope and resilience.
When Is the Event?
May 19 to 30, 2015
Can I Sign Up?
Unfortunately, registration is now closed.
I Want to Support This With a Donation!
You can also support New Orleans by donating for the Build-A-Thon. In order to provide the best volunteer experience possible and reach our goal of finishing ten homes, NOAHH will need donations of both tools and food to provide the needed resources for the visiting AmeriCorps. You can also directly sponsor AmeriCorps volunteers! We will have donation information soon. Until then, please donate through our donation page!
Corporate sponsorships are also available. Contact Jenna Turnage at 504-861-2077 ext. 246 or by email for more information!
Where Is America Street?
NOAHH and AmeriCorps will be Rebuilding America Street in New Orleans East. Since 2005, NOAHH has built over 50 new homes and completed over 20 ABWK repair projects in the neighborhood and plans to maintain a focus there for years to come. Build-A-Thon will serve as a focal point of NOAHH's efforts there and bring attention to the community that was overshadowed by other severely damaged parts of the city directly after the storms.
What Is AmeriCorps?
The AmeriCorps program is run by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) through which AmeriCorps members give a year of their time (or more!) to helping nonprofits and faith-based programs around the United States. Our partnership with HFHI has been instrumental in post-Katrina New Orleans in staffing the many organizations that have been dedicated to the recovery of the city, including NOAHH. Every year, dozens of men and women join our construction and office staff in building homes, raising money, and performing outreach work. They are a critical part of everything NOAHH has accomplished, and they serve similar roles at other affiliates. Habitat for Humanity International began the Build-A-Thon to bring them all together annually to both effect significant change and progress and to allow AmeriCorps service members the opportunity for community and fellowship.

19 FRESH & LOCAL That's right folks, one of our favorite times of year is here. Peaches are coming back to market starting this Tuesday! Yes, our Chilton County Peach vendors, the Durham family are back for the beginning of the season and will be hitting the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday markets this week! It shouldn't be long before their son in law James Jones makes his way down to join us at our Saturday market, but until then plan on making the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays markets your go-to destination for fresh peaches! We talked to Brenda Durham on Friday and she assured us that for being the early crop, the peaches they're coming down with this week are JUICY and delicious. So walk, run, bike and drive out to market this week and pick up a basket for yourself. And remember, for all those driving out to our Wednesday market, be sure to take advantage of the free two hour parking in the French Market Parking Lot PICKS OF THE WEEK: WE'RE HIRING! RECIPE OF THE WEEK We were so excited to see the Poch? Family Farm bring the first eggplants of the season to market last week! In celebration of those early eggplants and the loads more to come all summer long, try out this delicious Sicilian Eggplant recipe. Enjoy! Grandpa's Sicilian Eggplant
When visitors hear about New Orleans' huge Sicilian immigrant population that dates back to the late 1800s, they often ask, "Where's the New Orleans 'Little Italy'?" Back in the day, nearly every New Orleans neighborhood was a Little Italy with an Italian grocer on the corner influencing French Creole, German and Irish shoppers. Chef Duke LoCicero remembers his Sicilian grandpa with this dish.
Ingredients
- 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 eggplants (medium to large), peeled and then cut into small cubes
- 2 medium red onions, diced small
- 2 large bulbs garlic, roasted
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 2 cups sliced black ripe olives
- 1-1/2 cups sliced fresh basil
- 1 cup sliced green olives
- 1 cup diced pimientos
- 1 cup sweet Marsala wine
- 1/2 cup capers
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon anchovies, pur?ed
- 1/4 tablespoon crushed dried red pepper
Directions
Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Add eggplant, onions, and garlic; saut? over low to medium heat until eggplant is tender. Add all remaining ingredients-marinara sauce, black olives, basil, green olives, pimientos, wine, capers, sugar, vinegar, anchovies, and crushed red pepper-and mix well. Continue to saut? until 80 percent of the liquid is gone. Remove from heat, cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for 6 hours.
Serve hot or cold, with grilled seafood or meat. This dish can be used many ways, including with pasta.
Serves 8-10
Recipe compliments of Chef Duke LoCicero, Cafe Giovanni

Need a place to cool off and enjoy the beach, but don't want to take a road trip to get there? A former New Orleans swimming hot spot could get reopened. The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation wants to bring people back to the once popular Pontchartrain Beach. The group is asking the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority- East to allow LPBF to lease Pontchartrain Beach. Dwight Williams, with LPBF, said the group wants to make a swimming area in the middle of the beach. Then the group would have another section for motorized boats and a third section for non-motorized boats. The group also wants to have an area for kids to learn how to fish. The plan to revitalize the beach does not include rebuilding the amusement park, according to Williams. Families could come out and enjoy the day, and not have to worry about leaving for the restroom. The new beach would have port-o-lets. Williams said the group would not be providing lifeguards. Williams stated, they will have some kind of barrier or sign to let folks know when they are approaching deeper water. The LPBF's goes before the full Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority- East this Thursday, May 21.

Wednesday May 20 6:30 pm First Unitarian Universalist Church (corner of Claiborne Ave. & Jefferson Ave.) Please join Octavia Books and the Louisiana Landmarks Society for a lecture & signing with Roberta Brandes Gratz celebrating the launch of WE'RE STILL HERE YA BASTARDS How the People of New Orleans Rebuilt Their City Watching coverage of the hurricane on television in 2005, noted Roberta Brandes Gratz knew that the best chance for the city's recovery came from the people who would return to New Orleans. She also knew that she wanted to see for herself how the city would respond. Two years later, after having made several trips to the area and written several articles, Gratz bought a house in the Bywater and immersed herself in the life of the city. WE'RE STILL HERE YA BASTARDS presents an unprecedented panoramic look at New Orleans' recovery in the years following the hurricane. From the Lower Ninth Ward to the French Quarter, Gratz shares the stories of people who returned to their homes and have taken the rebuilding of their city into their own hands. An internationally renowned urban critic, Gratz shows how the city is recovering despite erroneous governmental policies that serve private interests rather than the public good. By telling stories that are often ignored by the mainstream media, WE'RE STILL HERE YA BASTARDS shows the strength and resilience of a community that continues to work to rebuild New Orleans. Roberta Brandes Gratz is an acclaimed urbanist who has published three previous books on the subject, including most recently The Battle for Gotham: New York in the Shadow of Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs. Her writing has also appeared in the Nation, New York Times Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal. She previously served on the NYC Landmark Preservation Commission and currently sits on the Sustainability Advisory Board for NYC. She splits her time between New York City and New Orleans.

Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. Author Event! Mother and Son Writing Team Talk About Three New Books: One by Him, One by Her, and One by Both of Them METAIRIE, LA - Pat and Patrick Cheron, a mother-son writing team from New Orleans, will discuss and sign copies of three new books at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie. The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Books will be available for those who would like to purchase them. The pair will talk about how they began to write together and how their writing relationship works. The Tavern by Pat and Patrick Cherons The first in a trilogy of novels about the New Orleans's underworld, The Tavern explores how a pair of unsuspecting young parents becomes wrapped up in a crime-laden community, simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Looking to build a better life, Italian emigrants Emilio and Jacinta Schlorini settle into New Orleans and open La Taverna, a neighborhood pub. The couple is blessed with a child and, for a time, a prosperous business. But before long, Jacinta grows suspicious of her husband, and of the patrons who claim to be their friends. Enter Frankie Clark, the man behind the local mob, who soon takes matters into his own hands. The System by Patrick Cheron Just like Cane and Abel, Jay and Harry Chambers are brothers who travel two different paths. Jay is on parole after spending time in prison for dealing drugs; Harry became an FBI Agent after obtaining his law degree. Now Harry wants Jay to break parole and go back to prison in order to check the circumstances involving the death of another agent's brother. The Neighborhood by Pat Cheron Do you really want to know what goes on behind your neighbors closed door? New Orleans was a changing city in the late 1950s but Sara Jolsen found that many neighborhoods hadn't changed much by the 1970s. People come and go and paint colors change, she thought, but neighborhood secrets are predictable. Will Frankie Clark, introduced in The Tavern, play hero or villain in Sara's neighborhood? Patricia B. Cheron is a native of New Orleans who loves to showcase the city in her novels. She has been a professional opera singer, actress and playwright. Her previous publications include the novella Never Too Late and the musical Chocolate Stitches. Patrick Cheron is an engineering student who is working with a Louisiana film producer to create a movie based on his book, The System. He has been published in Raising Dad magazine. For more information regarding this event, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or [email protected].

Activities will include arts integration, discussion, team-based problem solving, and reflection. Teachers at both sites created plans for the day collaboratively. WHEN: Wednesday, May 20, 9:30am - 2:20pm Sanctuary activity from 9:20-9:56 Great Peacemakers from 11:20-12:20 Part Two from 1:20 - 2:20 WHERE: Lusher Charter School, Lower School Campus Cafeteria/Classrooms (check in first @ office) 7315 Willow St. New Orleans, LA 70118 (504) 862-5110 WHY: Lusher and Plessy formed a partnership as part of a grant awarded through Ashoka. Lusher is one of 60 schools in the U.S. recognized as an Ashoka Changemaker School. Ashoka sought out the most influential elementary schools in creating a new framework in education to prepare students for rapid changes in the world. All of the schools in the network prioritize empathy, demonstrate a willingness to try new ideas, and seek to create change beyond their schools. As part of their partnership, Lusher and Plessy have participated in a design thinking workshop geared toward creative, solution-based thinking, visited other Ashoka schools together and collaborated in an empathy-based project called Love Drops (www.facebook.com/foundlovedrops) that has now spread as far as Spain. Both sites will participate in joint professional development on May 27 to learn more about student engagement strategies and project-based learning together. Lusher and Plessy hope to demonstrate the benefits derived when schools work together and support each other's missions in new ways that include more personal relationships. Robin Hood: Thief, Brigand is a brand-new play by New Orleans playwright Andrew Vaught, commissioned by The NOLA Project theatre company and NOMA for production in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The script, a timely tale considering our nation's growing class inequality, follows Robin and his band of Merry Men who accidentally intercept a chest full of 100,000 gold coins on its way to France. What they believe to be a great bounty stolen from the land's wealthiest citizens turns out, in fact, to be a ransom payment for King Richard who is imprisoned in France while on a religious crusade. Robin and his men distribute the stolen gold to the land's poor, but when Richard's brother, the oppressive Prince John, finds out that the land's poorest citizens are quickly becoming distinctly Middle-Class, he is incensed and vows to destroy the man they call Robin Hood.
This witty, fun, and adventurous new adaptation of the classic Robin Hood legend is sure to please young and old alike. For the past four years, innovative productions in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, and last year's immersive staging of Adventures in Wonderland have proven to be an incredibly popular and much-anticipated annual theatrical event in the city. Much like the other creative outdoor productions, Robin Hood: Thief, Brigand will utilize the unique setting of the sculpture garden combined with a large cast of over twenty professional actors to bring to life a production that occurs, in front of, behind, and all around the audience.
Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm
Thursday, May 21st at 7pm
Friday, May 22nd at 7pm
Sunday, May 24th at 7pm

THE HOWARD HUGHES CORPORATION? CELEBRATES THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF
The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk? New Orleans' Premier Shopping, Dining and Entertainment Destination Invites Community to Event-Filled Weekend of Celebration, Local Appreciation Days and Free Parking NEW ORLEANS (May 14, 2015) - In recognition of the first anniversary of the grand opening of The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk?, The Howard Hughes Corporation? (NYSE: HHC) and the iconic downtown outlet center are hosting a Memorial Day weekend of revelry on the river. "We are proud to celebrate the first anniversary of The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. This development symbolizes the attractiveness of our city to investors and national brands while underscoring the growth of our economy through increased sales tax revenue and new jobs and opportunities for the people of New Orleans," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "Riverwalk has anchored this important corridor, and we will continue a place-based strategy that turbo charges the riverfront." Following an $80 million transformation of the property, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk opened on May 22, 2014 with an all-star line-up of over 75 popular national brands and local favorites. In addition to being the nation's first outlet center in a downtown setting, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk is also the first location in the region for a number of tenants, including Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio, Coach Men's Factory Store and Tommy Bahama Outlet. Repositioning of the former Riverwalk Marketplace included a complete redevelopment and a significant expansion of approximately 50,000 square feet to the upper level, bringing the total to 250,000 square feet of much-needed retail space. With 30 percent less retail per capita than the national average, New Orleans was significantly under-retailed prior to the opening of The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, which welcomed more than 2 million shoppers within the first six months. As a testament to the Riverwalk's growing economic impact, the center will soon welcome its four millionth shopper and continues to prove itself as New Orleans' premium shopping destination where visitors can indulge in the latest fashion. Popular among locals and tourists alike, 58% of shoppers at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk live in the New Orleans area, and 84% of visitors reside in the U.S., many within a short drive or plane ride. Store sales have continued to exceed retailer expectations, and the center has created more than 1,000 jobs for the local community. "Our one year anniversary, in addition to the many milestones we've celebrated in the past year, is confirmation that The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk plays a vital role in New Orleans's growing reputation as a shopping destination," said Frank Quinn, General Manager of The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. "The retail economy is up throughout the city, and our transformation and revitalization along the riverfront is contributing to that success." To reiterate its ongoing commitment to the local community, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk is featuring Local Appreciation Days Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25. The first 400 shoppers each day, with a valid Louisiana driver's license and proof of purchase, will receive free parking in the adjacent "Whale Lot," located at the corner of Convention Center Boulevard and Julia Street. The Memorial Day weekend celebration will kick off with a Sno-Ball Social on Friday, followed by a Crawfish Boil on Saturday and a Sunday Funday Field Day and Food Truck Round-Up. New Orleans Saints Preseason:
In their four-game 2015 preseason schedule, three of the New Orleans Saints' opponents will be from the AFC, while all four posted winning records in 2014.
The Saints will kick off their 2015 preseason when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. This will be the second consecutive year that New Orleans will face Baltimore in the preseason. In addition to hosting the Ravens in a 22-13 preseason loss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on August 28, 2014, the Saints later dropped a 34-27 home decision to Baltimore on November 24. This will be the first time the Saints play at the Ravens in the preseason. Baltimore holds a 2-0 advantage in the preseason series.
The following week, the Saints will host the New England Patriots in the home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. It will mark the first time that the Saints have hosted the Super Bowl XLIX Champions in the preseason since 1986 and the first time the Saints play a defending Super Bowl champion in the preseason since they played at the Patriots in 2005. New England holds a 6-4 edge in the preseason series.
New Orleans will then host the Houston Texans on Sunday, August 30 in a nationally televised contest on FOX. Kickoff is 3 p.m. CT. The Saints have posted a 4-3 preseason record against the Texans, having faced them in exhibitions in six consecutive years from 2008-13. The Saints are also scheduled to play the Texans in the regular season at NRG Park.
New Orleans will wrap up its preseason slate in Green Bay. The Saints and Packers have not faced each other in the preseason since 2004, a game which was also played at Lambeau Field. New Orleans defeated Green Bay 44-23 on October 26, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last meeting. This year's contest will be the ninth preseason meeting between the two teams, with the Packers holding a 6-2 edge.
The NFL announced the 2015 regular season schedule Tuesday and the New Orleans Saints will be featured in at least three prime time nationally-televised games during the regular season, all of them at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Saints will also open on the road for the second consecutive season, when they play the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13 (3:05 CT) at University of Phoenix Stadium.
The Saints will make their prime time debut in 2015 on NBC's Sunday Night Football when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 4 (7:30 p.m. CT). The Saints' slot on the NFL's Thursday night package, broadcast by CBS and the NFL Network will take place when they host a Thursday night contest for the first time since the 2010 league opener, as they play the Atlanta Falcons on October 15 (7:25 p.m. CT). New Orleans' final prime time contest will take place when they host Detroit on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT).
Six of the Saints' 16 games will be against teams that finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in 2014, with games against five playoff opponents - Arizona, Carolina, Dallas, Detroit and Indianapolis. New Orleans will play each of their NFC South rivals twice and will play one game each against each of the NFC East and AFC South teams.
The Saints will open the season with two of their first three games on the road. After kicking off the regular season at the Cardinals, they will then open up their NFC South slate when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20 (noon, CT). New Orleans will then travel to Bank of America Stadium to face the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27 (noon, CT) to close out the month of September.
After hosting the Cowboys on Oct. 4, The Saints will then travel to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 11 (noon, CT), followed by a short week for the Thursday night game against Atlanta. New Orleans will close out their October slate on Oct. 25 (noon, CT), when they play their first AFC South opponent of the season, the Indianapolis Colts, at Lucas Oil Stadium.
To open November, a month where the Saints have posted an 18-6 mark since 2009, New Orleans will host the New York Giants at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Nov. 1 (noon, CT). New Orleans then hosts the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 8, followed by a road matchup at the Washington Redskins (noon, CT) on Nov. 15. The Saints will then enjoy a week 11 bye. The only other time since the NFL instituted its bye system in 1990 that the Saints had a week 11 bye was in 2011. New Orleans will then travel to NRG Stadium to play the Houston Texans on Nov. 29 (noon, CT).
In the final five weeks of the season, New Orleans will play each of their three NFC South rivals once, starting when they host the Panthers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Dec. 6 (noon, CT), followed by a road contest at Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 13 to face the Buccaneers (noon, CT). The Saints will host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m. CT) followed by a home contest on Dec. 27 vs. Jacksonville (noon, CT). The regular season finale will take place at the Georgia Dome on Jan. 3 (noon, CT), when New Orleans plays Atlanta. New Orleans Saints 2015 Schedule Bobby Hebert gives Saints 10 or 11 wins
