Making Beautiful Music: Studio Spotlight on Tree House

CJ Vanston makes beautiful music at his studio, The TreeHouse in North Hollywood. "I just want the band and me. That keeps it very intimate. That's what creates the environment for creativity, everybody is comfortable in this room," says Vanston. "The rest is nuts and bolts. Creating back ups. Making sure everything is recorded correctly," he adds. Vanston, who developes artists both up and coming and established under his production company, joined Grammy-winning producers at NAMM TecTracks 2017. Read more here

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES At AES 2015
Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Working Out Of The Box

Sylvia Massy is best known for working outside the box. In her blog posts and in her latest book "Recording Unhinged" (available on Amazon) she explains how!
Massy is renowned for her work with Tool, System of a Down, Johnny Cash and Prince. She has received over 25 gold and platinum records including awards for her work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sevendust and Tom Petty, 2017 MusiCare Person of the Year.  Sylvia recorded Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins (Rick Rubin producing) in studio B at Sound City, Van Nuys, California, on a vintage Neve console. The same console from Sound City followed Sylvia up to her Weed, California, studio, Radio Star and eventually to her studio in Ashland, Oregon.
As an educator Massy has given lectures at Berklee College Of Music in Boston
among many other places and we were honored to have her as speaker at NAMM this year on the production panel presented by studioexpresso and Trans Audio Goup.
How she keeps hitting those high notes (hits)? Read more here.

New ATCs Unveiled @ NAMM

TransAudio Group, U.S. distributor of the finest recording equipment in the world, occupied Booth #6945 at the Winter NAMM 2017 show on January 19-22, at the Anaheim Convention Center. Founder and president Brad Lunde was on hand with his knowledgeable team and a tantalizing range of new products from Telefunken Diamond-Series microphones, Bettermaker plug-in-controlled analog processors, Latch Lake mic stands, and Accusound cable, as well as timeless classics from Drawmer, Tube-Tech, Daking, and others.
ATC monitors had their own corner, where TransAudio Group showcased the popular near- and mid-field ATC SCM25A and SCM45A monitors, as well the new passive ATC SCM12 monitor and the ATC P1 PRO stand-alone amplifier. TransAudio Group's Subwoofer Pros Studio Subs  complemented the ATC SCM25As. TransAudio Group introduces the newest  and smallest member of the ATC family: the SCM12 Pro. Using the very same "all in-house built" components as its larger siblings, the SCM12 Pro delivers ATC's famous super-detailed "ATC midrange", solid imaging, and ideal balance that have made ATC the gold standard for working professionals across all music genres and audio industries. In a twist, TransAudio Group will combine the SCM12 Pro with ATC's all new P1 Pro 150W/channel rackmount amplifier in a bundle that breaks previous price barriers for ATC. The SCM12/P1 Pro monitor/amp package will carry a bundle MAP price of US $4350. If purchased separately, the SCM12 Pro is $1,990/pair MAP, and the P1 Pro amp is $3,490 MAP.

Additionally TransAudio created a new "free-to-the-dealer" display option.  The four-sided display makes it easy to showcase recording studio accessories, such as Accusound cable, Sabra-Som shock mounts, and Pauly and Hakan pop filters. "This display makes it much easier for the dealer to present and sell higher performance accessories. WE will service the display making it easy for the dealer to add plus revenue," said Lunde.

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the
Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

Cooley High @ The Broad
Screening Followed by Q&A with Cast & Crew Moderated by Common

During Martin Luther King weekend, The Broad at Red Cat screened the classic film Cooley High on January 14.
Ava DuVernay (13TH, Selma), curator and creator of ARRAY @ The Broad, introduced the film and the special guests.
A post-screening discussion with actor Glynn Turman, director Michael Schultz, and screenwriter Eric Monte was moderated by film producer Common.

In 1964, a group of high school friends who live on the Near North Side of Chicago enjoy life to the fullest...parties, pranks, first lovers and new friends. Then life changes for two of the guys when they meet a pair of career criminals and get falsely arrested in connection with stealing a Cadillac. The tragic event that follows becomes impetus for one of the friends to leave everything behind and become a successful screenwriter in Hollywood. We learned that in fact, these events took place in the screenwriter's life.  The film opens with a young man waking up his friend from bed which serves as a beautiful metaphor on waking him up to life.   The film's 1975 release provided a shift away from blax-ploitation cinema common during that time and features breakout performances from Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Garrett Morris, and Cynthia Davis.
The Director noted that even though the movie depicts black life, his goal was to let the blackness disappear when audiences begin to relate to almost every scene  familiar to high school life in the 70s - good friends, 1st-time experiences and unforgettable events. The director succeeds.

A Peaceful March Goes Pink For American Freedoms

2.6 million marched in all 50 states in America the day after the presidential inauguration.  The peaceful Women's March resulted in no arrests in major cities like Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Seattle.
People joined artists side by side activist Gloria Steinem, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Cher, Ashley JuddScarlett Johansson demanding rights for immigration reform, health care reform, protection of the natural environment, LGBTQ and disable rights, racial justice, freedom of religion, and workers' and women's  rights  --all  issues the marchers fear could be under threat from Trump's presidency .
Following the march, the organizers of the Women's March on Washington posted the " 10 Actions for the first 100 Days" campaign for joint activism.

Protesters sported pink pussy hats, the name refers to the resemblance of the top corners of the hats to cat ears and attempts to reclaim the derogatory term " pussy ", a play on Trump's widely reported 2005 remarks
that women would let him "grab them by the pussy."

Can't Keep Quiet Goes Viral
2.5 million views in two days

Singer-songwriter Connie Lim aka Milck wanted to make her voice heard at the Women's March on Washington. After brainstorming with her friends from the Pussyhat Project, the 30-year-old Los Angeles-based musician came up with the idea of performing her single, "Quiet," on the streets of Washington, D.C.
Next day to her post, she woke up to 2.5 million views!
Hashtags #WomensMarch #ANTHEM #Icantkeepquiet #TogetherWeRise swirled on the social networks and the group was featured on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.
"My job is to be very vulnerable and very open about how I want to express myself," says Ms Lim.

P!nk's single " Just like Fire" (co-written with producers Max Martin, Shellback, and Oscar Holter) from Disney's Alice Through The Looking Glass celebrates courage - to imagine and to act. Though the sequel to Tim Burton's revisionist fairy tale did not break the box office, the song is nominated for Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Medium.
"Alice marches to the beat of her own drum and nothing will get in her way...The world needs to see strong female characters," says P!nk

COMMON

Black America Again
Def Jam/Virgin EMI

American hip hop recording artist, actor, film producer and poet Common drops his new album, Black America Again. According to the artist, the album celebrates the black culture and is a tribute to all those creative, and joyful visionaries in the past and present..."it's about love, politics, and artistic expression," Common says.  The single, Letter to The Free (featuring vocalist Bilal) successfully masks the excessive noise following US election with a healing R&B chant.
On his new album, Common touches on spirituality, the physical realm, even his own upbringing. He masterfully recounts recent social tragedies, and dreams of a peaceful world run by women.
Common expresses love, grief, and rage at institutionalized racism tracing it back to Christopher Columbus.  Subjects of slavery, police shootings, housing projects and gentrification come up. Special guests on the album include: - John Legend, Robert Glasper on the piano, Esperanza Spalding on bass, ending with a special appearance by Stevie Wonder.
Against a dream-like jazzy background, J-Rocc offers c ornucopia of samples ( Gentle Giant, Ol' Dirty Bastard) and scratches with Karriem Riggins playing drums, bass and expertly wearing the co- production hat with Glasper.
Common won the 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the 2015 Academy Award for Best Original Song, for his song "Glory" from the 2014 film Selma, in which he co-starred as Civil Rights Movement leader James Bevel. He received his first Grammy Award in 2003, winning Best R&B Song for "Love of My Life", with Erykah Badu. Common was awarded his second Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, for "Southside" (featuring Kanye West), from his July 2007 album Finding Forever. Hi non-profit Common Ground empowers high school students to become future leaders through programs focused on character development, healthy living, financial literacy, and creative expression.
America Black Again is common sense. It is a timely tribute to American values and this month's Martin Luther King celebration. This one goes on my playlist.

TELEFUNKEN   DIAMOND SERIES
 MICROPHONES From Trans Audio Group

Say hello to TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's flagship Diamond Series -- the ELAM 251E, U47, and C12 large-diaphragm as well as the ELAM 260 small-diaphragm condensers -- now available through Trans Audio Group.  "For the fraction of the price of a vintage unit (assuming one could even find a vintage unit for sale!), TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik has come closer to recreating the original 1950's era microphones than any other manufacturer to date," says Brad Lunde. And this is good news for studios who can have interchangeable parts and sonics of the very best vintage models. "Offering faithful recreations of these highly-valued originals has been Telefunken's goal from the beginning," adds Lunde.

Thee Holy Brothers
My Name Is Sparkle
Songs by Marvin Etzioni
Peer Music

My Name Is Sparkle is the latest album by producer and songwriter Marvin Etzioni.
It's his heaviest album, but it's also, in a peculiar way, his sweetest -like Phil Spector orchestrating a George Saunders story.  Most of us may relate. It's post US election, and some of us are going through
what Etzioni calls a "spiritual flu."
We all could use some time to rest, heal, and listen to My Name is Sparkle.

Album credits Ravbbi Mordecai Finley for giving the dynamic duo their name, Thee Holy Brothers.
Peer Music has made no secret of printing a mere 180 copies of this sparkling album, comprised of 9 tracks in two acts penned by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Marvin Etzioni in the best Americana tradition. This may be Marvin's spiritual manifesto. It's filled with exquisite production and lyrics.
Like all good albums, this album grows on you. Yes, there are surprises sprinkled here and there ranging from Lennon-esque tunes to spars, at times gritty production, to suite the modern listener.
The album jacket is lovingly designed by Bruce Licher (yes, printed by hand)!
I got my copy during the holidays and it felt like opening a box of chocolates with the CD in translucent, candy-wrap-like jacket inserted in white box w/ simple silver graphics.
I listened to it first after hearing the duo perform at NoHo's Federal Bar, Sunday morning on November 8th. KCRW dj and music supervisor Gary Calamar had heard the opening track "Elvis in Jerusalem" and offered them the coveted spot at his mimosa series. We were among a roomful of guests. The mimosas were good, but the opening band for singer/songwriter, Jenny O, Thee Holy Brothers got my attention. The dynamic duo sang "Glad It's Gonna Rain," the bluesy riff that is the defiant song on the album.
I've been enjoying this song a lot with all the rain we've seen in LA! I
t's sure to embrace your inner rebel. Willie Aaron can play a mean harmonica.
"It's gonna rain silver and gold. It's gonna rain diamonds and pearls. It's gonna in your soul. It's gonna rain all over the world." Says the song that makes you want to join and sing along.
"Let The Great World Spin" speaks of abandon. We do our part and let it be.   "Let the great world spin round Let it all begin now." Here Willie Aron is featured on the MANDOLIN, Marvin on gtr, Tambourine, James Gadson on drums. Freebo play Tuba, David Ralicke plays Trombone and horns with Double G.
Marvin sings to "Devine Love." (Joe Corso is credited as co-writer) "It's midnight in our world. the darkness is so deep. When I can hardly see. Which way to believe. I believe in Divine Love," continues the poet.
Marvin's tender vocals stand out on "If God Let Go,"  where he counts his blessings.  " What would happen to stars in the sky? What would happen to moon shining bright? If God Let Go... What would happen to light in your eyes? What would happen to the love in your heart?"
Then you hear the lighter side of Etzioni in "Woman Need Man, Man Need Woman" which pokes fun both musically and lyrically at our understanding of the opposite sex, expressed in Double G's brilliant horns.
"A Sudden Gun Shot" sounds sweet and innocent like a nursery rhyme at first with Etzioni playing on the toy piano, and bells. Then it conjurs up the familiar 6 'oclock news headlines accompanied by a march-like beat over Etzioni vox " No one will miss a man nobody knows ."
In "Sparkle" he searches for God again. The yearning to know "the invisible one" or "love" is likened to "mother giving birth," or a "father I can believe." Then he asks: " Are You a face in the crowd. Are You the blood in my veins?"
And the album ends with a Dolly Parton-esque country vibe in "keep Crushing Me." He sings "my soul has been shaken down to the core, the dawn is now breakin what do You need me for? It's a song that will resonate with those serving time in their minds. But, perhaps it strikes a cord for those of us who have witnessed dawn of a new era in America and are left with the only choice: To begin the healing process. "You got the power. the power to heal in my darkest hour." I have a feeling this album will be heard for many years to come.
You will hear arrangements reminiscent of the George Martin era.  The album draws you in with clever instrumentation and lyrics.
Producer Etzioni (Lone Justice, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Peter Case) plays various instruments on the album (piano, drums, bass, tin music box toy, bells, guitar, tambourine, and yes the Mandolin) and gives a touching tribute to his friend, late engineer David Vaught who recorded several of the songs on the album at his Camp David studios in Thousand Oaks, Ca
Tracks 1-8 are mixed by Jeff Peters at Hot Pie Studios, Pasadena and the album is mastered by Sean Magee at Abbey oad Studios, London.
The album does what any great piece of art manages to do. It makes you pay attention, feel, tap your toes, sing along, and yes even get up and dance right after tears well up.   Thank you Marvin. You're correct, we win by being alive, and by staying true to who we really are. Marvin has done just that with Thee Holy Brothers.
