The Final tournament of the Garden State Debate League was held at Cedar Hill Prep School on Saturday, March 17th, 2018. Bill Bowman from the Franklin Reporter visited the school to cover the event.

Preschool International Day

We had an exciting International Day on Thursday morning, March 15th. Preschool students visited the country of Mexico.

PreKindergarten International Day

Preschool, PreKindergarten and Kindergarten students visited the countries of Mexico, France, Greece and China.

Kindergarten International Day

Both Kindergarten classes on International Day shared a fact about their country of study, China. We are very proud of them!

St. Patrick's Day

The Kindergarten children wrote about being a Leprechaun and where they would hide their pot of gold. We also read the book, The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day. 

Dr. Seuss Day

On March 2nd, in honor of Dr. Seuss, the Kindergarten children began the celebration of his birthday. The fourth grade students became buddies with the kindergarten children to read Dr. Seuss books. 


Passover

The children in Preschool listened to a story about a little girl who celebrates Passover with her family. The book is called,  A Sweet Passover. They learned that Passover is celebrated with traditional food, such as matzoh. 

Easter

For Easter, PreK 3 dyed eggs and hand decorated beautiful Easter baskets with chocolate eggs, and jelly beans. Happy Holidays!


The Five Senses

The children in PreK 3 learned about sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. They performed an experiment where the children used their sense of sight as they witnessed a beautiful display of color bursting in a tray of milk, food coloring and soap.
 
March In Like A Lion and Out Like a Lamb

The children in Prek 3 learned the saying, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That is truly what is happening this year. That lion does not want to leave!!!

Egg Hunt

Both Kindergarten classes celebrated the "Welcoming of Spring" with a joyous egg hunt!! Our celebration continued at the end of the day with delicious treats at our party!
 
Elementary News
Dr. Seuss Day

First and Second grade celebrated Dr. Seuss Day, by reading across grade levels. The children chose a partner and shared some of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. 

First Grade Workshop

First Graders’ favorite time of day is Workshop. During Workshop students reinforce whole group learning.

Fables of Aesop

First Graders learned about the fables of Aesop in a variety of fun ways. First, they read fables, and viewed short videos on line. Then they got into small groups and created puppet shows.

St. Patricks Day

The third graders had a day full of shamrocks and good luck on Thursday March 15th. They completed 2 leprechaun crafts and enjoyed our class party where they got to eat tasty green food.

Read Across America

At CHP, the third graders celebrated this special day by reading to our youngest students in Mrs. Holstein's and Ms. Loria's classrooms. Third graders brought a lot of smiles and laughter to the 3 and 4 year old classrooms. 

Third Grade Mystery Reader

Knock, Knock - Who's there? A mystery. A mystery who? A mystery reader!!! Third grade welcomed Ms. Sharnita, Anouka's mom, to their classroom. She read a very inspiring book called The 7 Habits of Happy Kids'.

Friday March 23rd, the 3rd graders had a mystery reader. SURPRISE! It was Anaya’s mom! She read us the book Dream Big Dreams that follows Obama’s presidential career and gives readers an inside glimpse of what life was like at the Whitehouse! 

Service Dogs in Third Grade

On Friday March 23rd, the 3rd graders had a visit from very special service dogs. Our students read to them and they listened very attentively! 

Kindergarten and Grade Four Students Celebrate Read Across America Day!

On March 2nd Grade Four students donned their Dr. Seuss hats and visited their Kindergarten friends, who were also dressed in their special hats. The children buddied up as the 4th graders read a variety of Dr. Seuss books to the Kindergartners.

Service Dogs in Fourth Grade

On Friday, March 23rd, Grade 4 welcomed seven service dogs in-training and their trainers from the Rutgers Chapter of Merlin’s KIDS – Animals and Children Helping Each Other, a non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates shelter dogs into service dogs.

Energy in Our Lives
Second graders concluded a mini-unit on Energy by exploring various types of energy used in their lives. They drew pictures and found examples through different media sources to create a collage to show what they know.

Middle School News
Medical 3-D Printing

Grade 8 students at CHP experienced a rare treat on Wednesday, March 14th. Merck Pharmaceutical Bio-Engineer, Tinh Nguyen DeMary, brought a medical 3-D printer from his science laboratory to show students how the medical research field is using 3-D printers in research medicines for testing in 3-D cell grown membranes for effectiveness and damage.
 
Taking Folk Literature on the Road!

CHP students in Grades 7 and 8 Language Arts classes studied various forms of folk literature. After completing a mini-lesson on Aesop's Fables, representative groups of students took their fables on the road. Each chose an Aesop's Fable to illustrate and present to younger students in Grades 1 - 5.

Visit to Assisted Living

On Wednesday, March 28, students from Mrs. Nemiroff's 8th Grade homeroom visited the Stein Assisted Living. The 8th graders spent the first half of their time circulating among the residents, chatting with them and getting to know them better.
 
Middle School Science Bowl

On Friday, February 23, a team from Cedar Hill Prep competed in the annual Middle School Science Bowl at Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. Our team of eight graders spent weeks preparing for this annual event. The team consisted of Aarav Gupta, Krishna Lekhi, Arjun Agrawal, VIshnu Gade, and Rohan Nunugonda. 

Somerset County Regional Spelling Bee
On March 10, 2018, Anush Polamraju, Grade 7, and Vikram Renganathan, Grade 5, represented Cedar Hill Preparatory School as they competed in the Somerset County Regional Spelling Bee at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School in Bridgewater NJ. Read More
National School Walkout
Cedar Hill Prep School participated in the National School Walkout on March 14th, 2018. All middle school students and faculty walked out and stood in silence for 17 minutes.  Read More

Singing and Dancing Competition
Cedar Hill Prep proudly embraces the "House System". One exciting "House" competition is the Singing and Dancing Competition that was held on Friday, March 9th. Our very talented students from kindergarten through grade eight participated in this talent based competition for House points. Read More

Steve Dechiaro
After a career in the engineering field, studying electrical engineering at CCNY and optical engineering at NYU, for the past several years I have been teaching, mentoring, and inspiring students to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related disciplines at the High School and Middle School levels. I am fortunate to be working with the Middle School students at CHP integrating real-world STEM topics throughout the science curriculum, challenging them thereby allowing them to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.
