Dr. Cheesman's App Chat: Holiday Gifts!

Word games and logic puzzle apps make perfect gifts for both young and old! These games and puzzles are one way to sneak in practice with spelling and problem-solving skills during the holiday break. With direction, word and spelling games can be used to strengthen memory for known graphemes (letter patterns) when students are challenged to focus on certain patterns (e.g., vowel teams like ai, ay, igh or consonant digraphs like sh, th, ng, etc.). Read More.

IDA Puts Over 55,000 "Dyslexia Kits" in U.S. Schools

In support of Dyslexia Awareness Month in October, IDA held a nationwide awareness campaign and fundraising event to provide one dyslexia resource kit to every public elementary school in the United States. This awareness campaign, the first tackled by IDA of such magnitude, was in response to parents and educators looking for ways to collaborate. The kit, Dyslexia in the Classroom: What Every Teacher Needs to Know, will help raise awareness, share best practices, and be a resource to the school's administration and staff. In order to get these kits to every public elementary school principal in November, we requested your help and you really came through! More than 55,000 kits were sent in November! Read More.

Spotlight on IDA Recognized Programs: Simmons College

The International Dyslexia Association reviews and recognizes university and college teacher

training programs that meet IDA's Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. This document guides endorsement of programs that prepare teachers of reading and/or programs that specialize in preparing teachers to work with students who have reading difficulties and disabilities. This month, The Examiner is pleased to profile the Language and Literacy Graduate Program at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. Click here to see all the programs IDA has recognized thus far. Read More.

Help Transform Reading Education in America!

IDA has embarked on a project that can transform the teaching of reading in America. There are far too few teachers qualified to teach children with dyslexia and the techniques that help children with dyslexia learn are exactly the methods that work best for all beginning readers. Yet, in the vast majority of classrooms in America, reading is being taught using methods that hundreds of trial studies have shown are exactly the wrong way to teach our children to read. In 2011, IDA accredited nine university programs using volunteer professionals to complete this work. This year, we are continuing this work at twelve additional universities. IDA professionals are evaluating curricula, teaching materials, and classroom content training teacher(s) who will teach reading, whether in the elementary classroom or in remedial settings. These accreditations will help bring these university programs in line with IDA's Knowledge and Practice Standards, an outline of scientifically proven methods for teaching all children, not just those with dyslexia. Read More.

Dyslexia in First Person: Lindsay Leavitt's Extraordinary Gift

When a young girl is 13 years old, her days typically are filled with laughter, friendship, and all things hot and trendy. Lindsay Leavitt added a personal goal to her journey into young adulthood--raising funds to support IDA and raising awareness of dyslexia. Lindsay has dyslexia and this is her story. Read More.

Model School Aims to Retrain Teachers in ABCs of Reading Instruction

Learning to read is the essential foundation of elementary education, but it's also very complex and many students in America are falling behind. John Tulenko of Learning Matters reports on one model school that has re-trained teachers in hands-on skills and strategies and has dramatically improved proficiency scores. Click here to watch as Dr. Linda Liss-Bronstein helps to retrain teachers in the art of reading instruction. Dr. Liss-Bronstein, the literacy coach featured in this video, has presented at several past IDA conferences.
