IDA Releases Two More Revised Fact Sheets

X-Man 150pix

IDA has revised two useful Fact Sheets. The first, "At-Risk Students and the Study of Foreign Language in School," takes a close look at the struggles and obstacles students face who have language difficulties in their mother tongue and how they may parlay into learning a new language.  The second, "Dyslexia Basics," is an updated version of the "go-to" fact sheet for those seeking information and knowledge on dyslexia, it's definition, and fundamental information.

Dyslexia Basics

The President Goes to Washington

On May 8 2012, Dr. Eric Tridas had the privilege of attending an event of the U.S. Congressional Dyslexia Caucus.  He was a guest of Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz, Directors of The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity who cosponsored this event with Rep. Bill Cassidy and Rep. Pete Stark, the Co-Chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Dyslexia Caucus. The three hour event featured an excellent presentation by Dr. Sally Shaywitz on the topic of dyslexia as a hidden source of great abilities and frequently unrecognized powers. Read More.

Extreme Reading Relay Success

On May 10, 2012, IDA hosted it's first Extreme Reading Relay. The Relay was IDA's largest national awareness campaign and fundraising event to date.  Nearly 500 students, representing 26 schools from DC to Hawaii, each read a sentence from The Sword of Darrow, by Hal & Alex Malchow, in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the longest reading relay.  Read More.

Reading: The Gateway Drug

Dr. Lance Chilton, a practicing Albuquerque pediatrician for 38 years, supposes

"that reading is like tobacco or marijuana.  It's a gateway skill, just as tobacco and marijuana are often gateway drugs to worse things.  Reading - the good gateway skill - is essential to reading not only car manuals, recipes, and fact-filled Wikipedia pages, but also to seeing the beauty of the novel or much of what society has to offer.  I guess I'm addicted to reading, and I'll push my chosen "drug" on each and every one of my patients and those I care about." Read More.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SIGNED THE IDA PETITION!

In response to the latest round of the proposed revisions for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), members of IDA's Scientific Advisory Board carefully crafted a Position Statement, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Dyslexia: Comments on Proposed DSM-5 Criteria for Learning Disabilities," that was approved by IDA's Board of Directors on May 29, 2012. This Position Statement formed the basis for the petition that IDA sent out to its members and supporters on June 4th asking them to sign it. The deadline for sending comments to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) was June 15th. So, in a little under two weeks, IDA was able to get 12,981 signatures in support of the petition! This has been an immensely successful petition campaign! In addition to a big thank you to the signers of the petition, IDA wants to thank the many people involved in crafting the Position Statement and the development and management of the petition. This was a huge effort and IDA rose to the challenge. The eXaminer will keep you posted regarding any further developments involving the DSM-5 and the use of the term dyslexia.
