CALL TO ACTION

Every so often, an issue merits stopping whatever you are doing, paying attention, and, if you are concerned, taking action. This is one of those issues: The proposed revisions for the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) no longer include dyslexia. IDA Leaders Respond to Education Week Article on Wisconsin Legislation

A handful of states are gradually adopting licensing tests that measure aspiring elementary teachers' ability to master aspects of what's arguably their most important task: teaching students to read. In the most recent example of what appears to be a slow but steady push, Wisconsin became the latest state to adopt a rigorous, stand-alone test of elementary teachers' knowledge of the science of reading. Read More.

Steinberg Discusses Problems with 3rd-Grade Retention Policies

Elenn Steinberg, President of the Rocky Mountain Branch of IDA, and Co-chair of the Government Affairs Committee, is a founding member of Literate Nation, a Wilson certified tutor and the parent of a child with dyslexia.  Elenn  was interviewed by Natalie Tysdal on KWGN television news regarding pending Colorado legislation that would hold back third grade students who can't read at grade level. Click Here to watch the video.

Rocky Mtn. Branch Shapes Literacy & Retention Bill

Elenn has a follow-up report on House Bill 12 - 1238 - Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act or the Colorado READ Act. The bill was passed with some revisions suggested by the Rocky Mountain Branch of IDA. The bill now includes language " to effectively teach the science of reading." This includes providing instruction that is based on reliable, trustworthy, and valid evidence that the instruction has demonstrated success at adequately increasing students' reading competency in key areas of reading. Elenn added that the retention language was greatly softened and includes a large parent-participation component, which is essential.
