Quinn's Quest

Anyone with dyslexia is all too aware of the many challenges one has to face over his or her lifetime.  Any parent of a child with dyslexia is often reminded of the heartache his or her child goes through.  Any educator who works with an individual with dyslexia frequently sees the struggles.  But what if you step back for a moment, refocus your outlook, alter your perception, change your angle and see the magnificence in all of it? This is the moment when the burden and anxiety become passion and empowerment.  This is Quinn Lathrop. Read More.

Unlocking Dyslexia

In support of Dyslexia Awareness Month, the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is holding a nationwide awareness campaign and fundraising event, "Unlocking Dyslexia: IDA Has the Key," to provide one resource kit to every public elementary school in the United States.  The kit, Dyslexia in the Classroom: What Every Teacher Needs to Know, will help raise awareness, share best practices, and be a resource to the school's administration and staff. Read More.

Spotlight on IDA Recognized Programs: SMU

The International Dyslexia Association reviews and recognizes university and college teacher

training programs that meet IDA's Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. This document guides endorsement of programs that prepare teachers of reading and/or programs that specialize in preparing teachers to work with students who have reading difficulties and disabilities. This month, The Examiner is pleased to profile the program at Southern Methodist University's Simmons School of Education and Human Development, M.Ed. in Reading and Writing Program. Click here to see all the programs IDA has recognized thus far. Read More.

Book Review

Linda Siegel has written a remarkable new book, Understanding Dyslexia and Other Learning Disorders, which I highly recommend for parents, administrators, teachers and clinicians. It is rare that a book can engage any and all of these audiences as well as this one. It is also surprising how well Professor Siegel, who is one of the most accomplished and widely published researchers in reading, language, and learning disabilities, can abandon academic jargon and conventions so effectively in favor of accessible, engrossing narratives about people with learning disabilities. Read More.

The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia

The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia is on tour! There are several stops along the way including Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The final screening of the Big Picture is at the conclusion of the IDA Annual Reading, Literacy & Learning Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana!

Please join IDA partner, Learning Ally, on Saturday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. following the conference for the last stop on the The Big Picture RoadshowRead More.

Raising Dyslexia Awareness

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month.  Across the U.S. and Canada, IDA Branches have been providing an array of opportunities within their communities to educate and inform families, educators, and legislators about dyslexia.  Each year, IDA's 43 branches provide informative webinars and dyslexia simulations. They hold Dyslexia Dashes and workshops designed specifically for parents, educators and the general public to increase their communities' understanding of dyslexia. In addition to these opportunities, many branches hold their annual conferences featuring nationally and internationally renowned experts in the field of dyslexia and other related learning differences.  Read More.

Interview: IDA Past President C. Wilson Anderson

WilsonAnderson

IDA's Historical Archives Committee took on the task of videotaping interviews of all the previous IDA Presidents who are still alive. A previous Vice-president, Louisa Moats, was also interviewed.  The interviews were carried out at the 2012 Annual Conference in Baltimore. Members of the committee carried out the interviews. They are: Wilson Anderson, Karen Dakin, Marcia Henry, Amy Lawrence, Martha Renner, and Mark Westervelt. Mark provided the technical support for the videotaping. The videos, starting with Drake Duane, MD., will appear in The Examiner. This month we have Marcia Henry interviewing Wilson Anderson. Thank you to all who made these videos, so rich in IDA history, as well as rich in the history of the field of dyslexia, possible. Click Here to view Wilson's interview.  Click Here to view the Past-Presidents Video Library.
