THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION JUST IN FROM
Good Afternoon Reader,
Late last night, the Rules Committee blocked the Buchanan Amendment from being duly considered on the floor of the House of Representatives. As you know, this important amendment would have continued the longstanding ban on using federal tax dollars for horse slaughter.
Support for the Buchanan Amendment was strong – we had the votes and would have won a bipartisan landslide victory. This undemocratic action by the Rules Committee is the result of interference by a small number of representatives who are dead set on bringing horse slaughter plants back to our country.
The fight to prevent horse slaughter plants from re-opening in the U.S. is far from over. The Senate Appropriations Committee voted overwhelmingly to ban horse slaughter earlier this year. We must now ensure that the House agrees to the Senate prohibition as the two sides work out the differences in their two versions of the Appropriations bill. We will keep you updated along the way in this fight, but right now there is a more pressing need.
We must now turn this energy into action for the protection of wild horses. Today, the same Rules Committee will meet again to decide whether or not the Titus Amendment is allowed to come to the House floor for a vote this week. Unrelated to horse slaughter, this amendment will prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to conduct a mass killing of our federally protected wild horses and burros. We cannot let this massacre happen, and we only have a few hours to strongly relay the importance of protecting our wild horses to our representatives.
Please call your U.S. representative before close of business today or first thing tomorrow morning and urge him/her to support the
to ensure that healthy wild horses are not targeted by a government killing program.
These are hard and frustrating times, my friends, but we have the majority of Congress with us so don’t lose faith. We must persist and stay strong for these animals.
All the best,
Audrey, Kathryn and Geoff
