HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Welcome to the year 2026!

The first quarter of this year already has annual events lined up for you to participate in. As you scroll down, you can choose one or more to register for.

This first newsletter for 2026 will also start a series of introducing us to the leaders we have voted in to serve Area 10. We have the privilege of hearing what they have been doing or involved in within the handbell world or otherwise. Up first is our Area 10 Chair Tomi Kent.

Do you have a composition running around in your head? Perhaps you will be interested in getting it put on paper and submitting it to the Donald E Allured Original Composition Award program. Continue scrolling to learn more about their New Composer Initiative.

Most of us like to win something or help to create a winning scenario. As you keep scrolling, you can read about 3 ways in which you can help yourself and others to Win!!

If you consider yourself a creative arts person (beyond ringing handbells) and enjoy working with the computer programs for setting up webpages, social media pages, etc. than perhaps you will be the one to answer a request from our communications chair. Give it some thought.

As a reminder - you are welcome, and encouraged to send in something that can be (perhaps, even should be?) shared with members of Area 10. Such submissions should go to our Communications Chair - Joann Wallenburn at communications.area10@handbellmusicians.org.

Please submit your article by the 22nd of the month before the next newsletter. Submissions dates - February 22 (Mar/Apr), April 22 (May/Jun), June 22 (July/Aug) , August 22 (Sept/Oct), and October 22 (Nov/Dec). The special Concert Dates Only submissions (includes poster and brief concert description) needs to be submitted by November 22nd.

Here's to a full year of ringing!

After the Cut off -

Then What

.....Consider the freeze that customarily ends a piece of music, the moment of silence and stillness that allows the music to settle and begin to sink into the listener. The silence shows respect for the music. It highlights the music, setting it apart from whatever comes next. And, not only does the silence show respect for the music, but for the performers and the audience, as well. For one moment, everyone in the room is united by the power (or beauty) of the music and the silence that follows. The applause begins, and after the director bows, it’s off to the next piece of music, right?

Whoa, not so fast. If this is a concert setting, why not build on the moment and offer the audience one more thing - a chance to connect with the performers! Most of us know how this works. The choir takes one step back from the tables and look directly toward the audience as a “thank you” for the applause. But, why the step back? Isn’t this just performative? No, because once the players are away from the tables, it is impossible to do anything except look up and out to the audience! No one can start messing with their music. No one can rearrange bells. The audience gets complete attention. The backward step gets results and is learned quickly.

Confession time: My choir hasn’t been doing this because it would have been one more thing to practice. But for our Christmas concert this year, I decided it was about time we took the step (pun intended) to bring about this interaction with the audience. I got to watch the backward step after the first piece. It was electric! The applause did its magic, and every player was beaming. Everyone in the room felt included.

The New Composers Initiative

Paul Kingsbury, on behalf of the Allured Compostition Award Committee

The Donald E. Allured Original Composition Award is pleased to announce a new initiative for the creation of handbell music. Established in partnership with the Handbell Musicians of America, the New Composers Initiative will identify and support new talent seeking to break into the world of published handbell music. Recipients will be mentored by an established composer, receive a cash fee for their composition, have their work published by AGEHR, and have their work premiered at a prestigious HMA-sponsored event.

The New Composers Initiative’s inaugural award in 2025 went to Aryaman Joshi of Minneapolis. Aryaman graduated from St. Olaf College in 2023 with a B.A. in Music Composition and Mathematics with a Data Science Minor. During his time at St. Olaf, he studied composition under Dr. Timothy Mahr and Dr. Justin Merritt. He currently rings with Ring Out! in the Twin Cities. His composition, tentatively titled “Za’atar” integrates Arabic modes, rhythms, and ornaments, and will be premiered at Distinctly Teen 2026.

The New Composers Initiative is currently looking for the next recipient of the award. Interested applicants should have acquired the musical expertise and compositional skills necessary to produce an original handbell work which meets the standards to be premiered at a major HMA event. Because the Initiative is designed to promote new composers, applicants should have no more than two handbell compositions accepted by an established music publishing house.

Applications will be accepted at weekofhandbells.com/newcomposers from Jan 1, 2026 until Feb 28, 2026 and the winner of this award will be announced by March 31, 2026. Composers wishing to be considered for the award should submit:

  1. A comprehensive sampling of their compositional output, as possible with sound files, which demonstrates the applicant’s understanding of music theory and the handbell idiom. Examples need not be restricted to compositions for handbells, but at least one work must demonstrate an understanding of the handbell idiom.
  2. A brief (250-word) statement sharing their vision for the sponsored commission, including any ideas that might be considered unique and innovative.
  3. Contact information for a reference who can speak to the applicant's talent and skills as a composer.

The composer selected for this award will be closely managed to ensure completion of the composition.

The Donald E. Allured Original Composition Award was originally established in 1993 by attendees of the Bay View Week of Handbells to honor and ensure an appropriate legacy for Mr. Allured. The purpose of the Award was to commission original handbell music that would exemplify the highest standards and expectations that Donald Allured would demand in such works. Since its inception, the Award has commissioned compositions from many of the field’s most prominent composers for premiere at the Bay View Week of Handbells concert. While the Allured Award enthusiastically continues this activity, it also seeks to expand the pool of capable composers to carry the art into the future. For more information, please contact allured-wiltse-funds@handbellmusicians.org.

COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE GENERATIONS

The Greatest Generation, the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y (Millennials), Gen Z, and now Gen Alpha. Which are you? Me, I’m a Baby Boomer. Yep, getting’ up there. While date ranges define the progressing generations, milestones in communications technology are associated with the various generations. My dad, of the Greatest Generation, saw TV become a household appliance in his youth. Granted, it was B/W. Me? I saw color TV’s come into the home for all 4 channels that came in through our aerial antenna on the roof; the transition from dial-up telephone and party lines to touch-tone phones, but they were still tethered to the wall by a cord. Gen X saw cable TV and those pesky VCR’s. I believe cell phones belong to the Millennials. And the Personal Computer. I started with a Commodore 64, when my Millennial was a baby. Now she teaches me how to use Facebook. You get the picture.

Area 10’s communications went nearly all digital around Gen Z, with electronic newsletters and a website. Today, we also have Gen Z social media and some lingering pre-Greatest Generation print media. We need volunteers from multiple generations to support our communications with YOU, to keep you informed of what’s happening in the greater handbell community and, closer to home, in Area 10 – in the form of communication you prefer.

Area 10 is seeking volunteers to manage our social media outreach, our website, and our print media. Isn’t Debra Pankaskie doing a great job with the NW Campanologist? Area 10 currently has a Facebook account and Instagram. I know we can do better. I just don’t know how to. Remember, I’m a Baby Boomer. Our print media needs are small in volume: 4 quarterly submissions to Overtones and as needed hardcopy mailings, typically 1 or 2 per year. Do you have an interest in graphic arts? Here’s a resume building opportunity for you. Do you know what WordPress is? Consider taking on the Area 10 webmaster position. I have ideas for improvement and would love to hear yours – and give you the reins to make them happen.

If you have an interest in any of these positions (Social Media Editor, Print Media Editor, Webmaster), please reach out to me. Thank you!

HANDCHIMES LOANER PROGRAM

How Would You Like to Borrow Chimes for Your School? Or Church? Or Senior Center?

Each state in Area 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington) has a 3-octave set of chimes to loan out for a year. School year, that is. August/September to June.

Handchimes are a wonderful first instrument because the student is rewarded with a proper musical sound each and every time it is rung. It may be the wrong note to ring – but it sounds good. No squeaks or squawks. Holding the instrument is easy with no complicated fingering. Chimes are sturdy and are immune to peanut butter and jelly or other kid-introduced substances. They are small and light and easy to transport between multiple venues and lighter to ring for our senior citizens or anyone with a disability.

For more information and to apply, visit the Area 10 Chime Loan Program Web page. The application window is January 1 through June 30.

WIN! WIN! WIN!

To expand on this - - -

I recently went through the inventory looking for music specific to ringing events. Think Coppers Classics, Big Sky and Fall Ringing Roundup. (It would be a little late for Snake River, but I could look). While I have not finished looking for every title there are a number of pieces available for these events. The caveat is that some titles have only 1 - 3 copies available so it would be 'first inquiry - first served'. Other titles, I will admit, are not available.

I will also be doing another music search for a director over on the north east side of Washington state who has a wish list for some Easter music. She recently wanted some music for Christmas, and I was happy to be able to help provide her with a number of selections. All at the 50% discount rate.

In addition to the music, there is an inventory of gloves available. If you need some basic gloves for rehearsals in either black or white, send me an inquiry. I know that they will be offered at a discount as well.

Mr. Dean Kravig, the individual paying for the storage unit in which all the music is kept, is doing this because he is a great guy who did not want to see several million dollars worth of inventory just get tossed out! He is a former music teacher himself, having taught both high school band and handbell choirs.

You can still look to your usual source for music, but consider helping us keep a 'few good pieces' out there to still be rung. Plus, you would be helping grow the scholarship funds that are offered thru Coppers Classics or Area 10. WIN! WIN! WIN!

To learn more you may reach me, Debra, via text (509-540-9743 - give your name & what you are looking for) or emailing me at campanologist.area10@handbellmusicians.org.
