Relaying it from our community partner, Louie Pinkerton:
My name is Louie Pinkerton (they/them), and I am an intern at the Transgender Center of the Rockies (TCR), a program at Mile High Behavioral Healthcare. I am hosting a Deaf LGBTQ event called Rainbow Hands on Tuesday, April 18th from 5pm-7pm on Zoom. We will have interpreters provided!
This is for folks who identify as D/deaf or hard-of-hearing and LGBTQ+ in Colorado! So even folks who may have lost their hearing later in life (late deafened), or they are an oral deaf adult who may not use ASL or sign language. Iβd like be as inclusive as possible, but also want to be respectful and focus on the shared identity of deafness. With this, we may include Children of Deaf Adults (CODA), hearing non-verbal folks who use ASL as their primary language, and other folks in the signing community, depending on the interest this event gathers. As the facilitator/host, I am a mainstreamed deaf adult who uses spoken English and understands ASL and can communicate in SEE.
I am hoping to build a community of Deaf and Hard-of-hearing LGBTQ adults in Colorado. As an intern at the Transgender Center of the Rockies, Iβve noticed that, as a deaf and queer individual, there are hardly any events for folks like me. LGBTQ events usually donβt have interpreters, and deaf events donβt talk about LGBTQ-specific issues. Iβm hoping this can be more of a peer and social group that can demonstrate a need and desire for Deaf folks to receive behavioral health services. Our agency doesnβt really serve DHH folks, and I hope this event gets enough participation to demonstrate that yes, weβre here and want services!
