Editor's Notes

The coronavirus is turning life as we know it upside down. We send good health wishes to our global readers and  we want to thank public health workers and medical professionals who are fighting the pandemic on the front lines. Many federal, state and local government officials (elected and staff) have taken a myriad of measures to slow the spread of the virus and its impacts on daily life and the world's economy  and we appreciate their collective efforts.

We have added a new section about the coronavirus to our weekly e-newsletter, combing through roughly one hundred articles so our readers can keep up-to-date on the status of health care and government responses to the pandemic. Please send us any information you think would be of interest to our readers on this subject.

Please stay safe and healthy, and follow the recommendations of state and county health officials, as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Coronavirus information from the state of California may be found  here.  Coronavirus information from the CDC can be found here.

New developments:
  1. LinkedIn publishes a daily update on the coronavirus virus. Click here to access LinkedIn's daily updates.

  2. Last week, President Trump invoked wartime authority under the Defense Production Act (DPA), allowing him to order faster production of medical supplies and prohibit certain people from entering the U.S.,  but to date, the president has not used the DPA except for travel prohibitions to/from certain countries.
  3. For California Residents: Covered California announced last week that members who have less income due to the virus (even if you receive financial assistance to pay for health insurance) should report should report income changes here. Members and non-members who need financial help to pay for health insurance can get help here or by calling Covered California at (800) 762-9596.
  4.  Yesterday, March 25th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it has prevented shipments of illegal health products from entering U.S. Pacific ports. The products were  not registered with the EPA, and they make misleading claims about their safety and effectiveness as disinfectants for COVID-19. EPA has released an expanded list of EPA-registered disinfectant products that have qualified for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The list contains nearly 300 additional products-including products that went through the expedited review process for emerging viral pathogens. The most up-to-date list of EPA-registered disinfectant products is available here. For more information on EPA resources on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), click here.
