175 Young Adults Helped (and Counting)!
|
|
Greetings!
On August 31st, Hearts to Homes completed its third year of operations. Three consecutive years of growth and support for foster youth! What will the future hold for us? Expansions to more agencies and assisting 100 more young adults are just some of the plans for next year. We look with optimism to the future and remain steadfast in our mission - assisting young adults who have aged out of foster care to furnish their first, independent apartments.
Before we look forward, we'd like to reflect back on a year like no other, grateful for so many loyal supporters. Your generosity is making a difference in these extraordinary times.

Referrals slowed in April when COVID hit the NYC area with a vengeance. But by June, the referrals began to pour in. Some agencies were no longer able to accept deliveries of Hearts to Homes essentials, due to work-from-home rules, This required our volunteers, with COVID safety protocols in place, to make those deliveries. At one agency, a referral of five young adults at one time, and an office that was off limits, meant a delivery that only a professional could handle. So, we called upon our friend Brian McElroy at McAvey Moving for assistance.
We will forever be indebted to their team who moved an enormous amount of household essentials to locations in Queens and the Bronx. The donation of McAvey's services was a MUCH appreciated surprise!

Furnishings Provided Reach New Records!

From September 1, 2019 to August 31 2020, you helped us furnish 67 apartments for foster youth in need. This is an increase from 54 apartments the previous year! Since inception, Hearts to Homes has now helped 175 young adults move from foster care to independence. Think that even a small donation won't make a difference? Read what our agency partners say about the impact your gifts have HERE.
We would also like to thank everyone who supported our recent campaign for Caroline, a young woman from our agency partner, Forestdale. Beginning September 9 and concluding on September 14, you helped us complete her Wish List, raising over $4,300 for essential furnishings for her kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room! We look forward to utilizing the excess raised to help the next Forestdale young adult!
Furnishing an average apartment currently costs Hearts to Homes $2,125. As Hearts to Homes receives referrals to help create a safe and stable first home for more young adults, we will continue to need your support. If you were unable to participate in Caroline's campaign, please consider becoming a monthly donor. It's easy to set up and a great way to ensure your support for the next person in need!

Bundles of Joy - Supporting the babies, too!
|
|
Approximately one-third of all Hearts to Homes referrals are young mothers who are aging out of foster care. While we provide essential household items that support both our moms and their child(ren), we don't provide any baby- or toddler-specific items in our deliveries. Rather than create a new program internally, and distract from our primary focus, we've expanded services by partnering with organizations whose missions are in a perfect synergy with ours!
Bundles of Joy, located in Bronxville, NY has been providing urgently needed items to our moms in Westchester and the Bronx. The accompanying photo shows some of the bounty in a bundle! The Good + Foundation, based in Manhattan, will provide similar support for our moms in the other four boroughs of NYC. What a wonderful way to work together in the most efficient ways possible!

Talented and Treasured!
Our thanks for the treasure, time, and talents of these three original Hearts to Homes board members who have finished their term. All three joined Hearts to Homes from the start, and their efforts on behalf of foster youth helped us expand to support youth at eleven agencies. Our mission would not have had this growth without their amazing leadership! READ MORE
