The indisputable song for Halloween remains Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
The tune, which premiered in 1984 as the seventh and final single for Jackson's album of the same name, earned the singer a Grammy Award for
Best Video Album.
"Thriller" redefined the concept of the music video, turning it into an event in and of itself. The thirteen-minute short features iconic shots of Jackson dancing with a horde of the undead and a spoken sequence by horror legend Vincent Price. "Thriller" remains influential to this day as an ever-present representation of the very spirit of Halloween.

November 4th First Friday...

What better way to celebrate the spookiest time of year, then cozying up with a hot cup of coffee and a new horror novel!
Frame of Mind is celebrating Missoula author Laramie Dean with a reception and signing of his first published novel, Black Forest.
A story of a young man haunted by the dead, finding himself in a spree of missing young men, and something dangerous lurking his way. Set in a college town in Montana, this book is sure to put you in the Halloween spirit.
| |
|
Laramie Dean was born and raised on a ranch in northeastern Montana. He is the author of several plays from Theatrefolk, including Frankenstein Among the Dead, Dracula, The Gorgon Sisters, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Finding Jo March, all of which have been performed by the Hellgate High School drama department where Laramie Dean is employed.
| |
|
Black Forest is the debut novel by Laramie Dean, published by Inkshares. Inspired by the dark labyrinthine narration of Shirley Jackson’s Hangsaman, Black Forest is the story of a young man’s battle with reality as it seemingly dissolves around him, forcing him to fight a series of ever-more frightening supernatural creatures, while one may be closer to him than he thinks.
| |
|
Join Frame of Mind on Friday, November 4th, from 6:30 to 9 pm for the release and signing of Black Forest, featuring the author's private art collection, as well as an author reading, and a chance to not only purchase Black Forest, and all of Laramie Dean's plays, but get them signed by the author as well.

Jennifer Baylis
self portrait
| | |
|
Jennifer started painting and drawing from a young age, but it wasn’t until she took a class in portraiture at the local junior college during high school, that she found her love of drawing the portrait.
|
From the artist:
Drawing and painting portraits excites me and gives me the right amount of challenge to capture a likeness while bringing something of myself. For me the process of painting is also just as important as the result itself, a journey of color, value, and edges with a painterly feel.
| |
|
My current body of work started in the lockdown period of 2020, with my portraits being of a darker, moodier nature. Longing, weariness, boredom and more nuanced feelings populate my work.
Even though they look gloomy, these people are resilient. I strive to evoke an emotional response from the viewer by engaging the viewer’s gaze with the penetrating gaze of the model.
| |
|
As the pandemic wore on and vaccinations became available, the mood shifted around me and I wanted to capture some lightheartedness in my portraits. My grandfather owned an ice cream company in California and ice cream was always a big deal in my family. As an ode to my family history, I was inspired to include ice cream in my portraits for the pure fun and enjoyment of it. That led into painting women with donuts, cupcakes and sparkles which buoyed my spirit and provided a relief from the darkness of the time. Celebratory in nature, they offer some whimsy and joy to the viewer as well.
|
Jennifer Baylis currently works full time as an artist in Missoula, reflecting the city’s dynamic individuals through portraiture and figurative work. Jennifer is influenced by Realist masters like Anders Zorn and John Singer Sargent, as well as contemporary artists including Dennis Perrin, Natalia Fabia, and Sean Cheetham. Like these oil painters, she strives to bring a painterly approach to the subject. She works primarily in alla prima methods in which the painting is worked “wet-into-wet” in one session.
Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree in Art from UCLA, with an emphasis on drawing and painting. She went on to work at the Long Beach Museum of Art in California as the Community Arts Coordinator and then at the Orange County Museum of Art as the Education and Public Programs Manager.

A SUPERHERO KIND OF ART CLASS!!🦸♀️
BEGINNERS DRAWING CLASS: EPIC ACTION POSES!!!
My fellow nerds young and old, this is for you! This class is all about superheroes, villains, and monsters.
Take basic shapes and values and turn them into superpowered beings!
Step One: We’ll keep it simple at first. Construct a basic skeleton(aka stick figure), then use basic shapes to note the anatomical structure.
Step Two: Once you get your character framed, it’s time to inject the super serum! We’ll cover some basic elements of the muscular and skeletal systems, then play around with exaggerations.
Step Three: Time to add the details that make your character unique (outfits, accessories, etc.) The more outlandish, the better! Pay homage to your favorite character, or just create one of your own.
My assistants, Bruce and Jed III, have graciously volunteered to model and provide moral support.
Students get 10% off any supplies purchased for the class. Show up in your favorite superhero/villain costume and get 15% off!
