1st Annual Spanish Program Colloquium
|
|
The Department of Literatures and Languages presents the inaugural Spanish Program Colloquium.
The idea behind the theme, Tertulia: Una noche bohemia, draws inspiration from the terms tertulia and bohemia, which together refer to social gatherings with literary or artistic overtones. Tertulias in particular were literary salons popular in Spain dating back to the 17th century that were at first held in private homes, but later in the 19th century in clubs and cafés.
In a café-inspired ambiance within the Rita, students will present a variety of work in the spirit of this year’s theme, including but not limited to original research, poetry and other forms of creative writing, and musical or short theatrical performances.

Chancellor Debbie Ford Recognized for Outstanding Leadership and Community Service
|
|
Chancellor Debbie Ford was among six distinguished honorees who recently were recognized for their outstanding leadership and community service at the 32nd Annual Salute to Catholic School Alumni dinner in Louisville, Kentucky. This year’s event raised a record $1.4 million to support the Catholic Education Foundation’s tuition-assistance program.
The record-breaking fundraiser was held on the evening of March 15 in the Grand Ballroom of the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The Salute dinner recognizes leaders who exemplify dedication to society, and whose success in life was nurtured by their Catholic education.
Chancellor Ford was recognized as part of the Salute Class of 2022. She is a graduate of Mercy Academy, an all-girls’ Catholic high school in Louisville, where she was recognized as the 2001 Alumna of the Year. After graduating from Mercy, Dr. Ford went on to earn her B.S. from the University of Louisville, her Master of Education from Indiana University, and her Doctor of Education from the University of Louisville. She has been Chancellor of UW-Parkside since 2009.
Dr. Ford credits much of her success to the values instilled by her Mercy education and embraces the opportunity to pay education forward for future generations.
“I have had the opportunity to live the values of the Mercy Creed by leading, serving and transforming lives,” said Chancellor Ford during her acceptance speech at the Salute Awards ceremony. “Each day I embrace the wisdom of the Sisters of Mercy Founder, Catherine McAuley, “to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways.”

The Salute Dinner also featured a keynote address by the Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D. D., Archbishop Emeritus of Louisville. The event was attended by 1,200 guests, continuing its tradition as a hallmark community event in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to provide tuition assistance for families who cannot afford the full cost of a Catholic elementary education for their children. The event annually lifts the hopes of thousands of young Catholic school students and their families through the transformative gift of a Catholic education.

Putting People in Touch with Nature - Interview with Maddie McAndrews
Maddie McAndrews spent summer of 2021 as one of Pringle Nature Center's Naturalist Educators. This internship allowed Maddie to share with others the fun of wildlife.
Growing up close to a nature center in Fox Valley, Illinois, Maddie had always kept the idea of volunteering at a nature center in the back of her mind. After she moved to Kenosha and transferred from the College of Lake County, an instructor informed her about an internship opportunity at the Pringle Nature Center in Bristol. Maddie is a junior Environmental Studies major, with a minor in Biology. This summer internship was a perfect match for Maddie to gain beneficial experience first-hand.
