Featuring the findings of four leading Washington scholars, this panel will move beyond the “marble man” image of Washington to discuss his efforts to launch the Constitution and ensure the successful launching of the new American Republic. Faculty Highlight: Dr. Sahar Bahmani
Professor of Finance Dr. Sahar Bahmani has authored a paper on stock market returns and income inequality in the U.S. that has been accepted to the Global Finance Journal.
Dr. Bahmani’s publication is titled, “Stock Returns and Income Inequality: Asymmetric Evidence from State Level Data in the U.S.” In her assessment, Dr. Bahmani used linear and nonlinear models to assess the impact of stock returns on income equality in the U.S.
“When we used income inequality data from the U.S., as a whole, we only found un-equalizing effects of stock returns in the short run,” she explained. “However, when we estimated the models for each state individually, the linear model yielded significant short-run effects in 38 states that lasted into the long run in 17 states. The numbers increased to 42 and 24, respectively, when we estimated the nonlinear mode.”
Dr. Bahmani has taught a DV (diversity) course titled, Discrimination in Banking, at UW-Parkside for the past five years, which she says informed the research for her paper on the stock market. In her accepted article, Bahmani explains the link to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
"As developments in the financial markets provide channels through which public savings are transmitted to investment," she said. "However, those who earn a lower income have little to no savings and therefore are unable to invest."

Mask Update!
Dear Parkside Community,
Given the steady decline in COVID-19 cases across the state and in our local communities, changes in CDC guidance, and low case counts on campus, the UW-Parkside indoor mask mandate will expire at 11:59 pm on Friday, March 18. The wearing of masks will be optional indoors, except in the Student Health & Counseling Center where they will continue to be required, effective March 19 in line with the beginning of our Spring Break.
We recognize that many of our campus community members may choose to continue wearing masks and we strongly support their choice to do so. It is important for all of us to respect individual decisions as we aren’t always privy to others’ personal or family members’ health issues.
Thanks to a high rate of vaccinations and the commitment of our campus community to following health and safety measures, we have kept our infection rates low, even during the recent surge of the omicron variant. Masks will continue to be available on campus along with testing at Ranger Clinic and vaccines and boosters through the Student Health & Counseling Center.
Thank you for your continued efforts to respect and support one another as we adapt to the impacts of this global pandemic. The University will continue to monitor the situation and we reserve the right to modify COVID protocols in the future based on local conditions.
