COVID Updates and Information
Dear UW-Parkside Community,

As we look forward to warmer weather (surely it will warm up soon) and the end of the Spring term, we wanted to share our planned COVID protocols for the Summer term.

Masks
Masks are not required, but we are a mask friendly environment and some individuals may choose to continue to wear masks.

Testing
The Ranger Clinic will close on May 12th and mandatory testing for unvaccinated individuals will cease. Testing for students with symptoms will be available at the Student Health and Counseling Center by appointment (262-595-2366). Students who need COVID19 tests for work or travel will be referred to area testing locations (Walgreens, Wal-Mart, etc.) or you can order free at-home tests online at https://www.covid.gov/tests. Employees who have symptoms will be referred to their healthcare provider or area prompt care.

Updated Isolation Guidelines
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 and have symptoms will be asked to isolate for 5 full days, wear a mask for an additional 5 days and return to normal activity on day 6 per the CDC and local public health recommended guidelines.

Updated Quarantine Guidelines (For those who have been exposed to COVID-19)
People who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second Pfizer/Moderna dose or more than two months after the J&J vaccine and have not yet received a booster dose should:
  • Quarantine for five days following exposure and wear a well-fitting mask when around other people for an additional five days.
  • Monitor for symptoms for 10 days.
  • Test on day 5 after exposure.
  • If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19.
  • People who meet one of the following criteria do not need to quarantine after exposure to COVID-19, but should test on day 5 after exposure, wear a well-fitted mask when around other people for 10 days:
  • Have completed their 2-dose Pfizer/Moderna vaccine series within the last six months; OR
  • Have been fully vaccinated with a J&J vaccine within the last two months; OR
  • Have received a booster more than two weeks prior to the exposure.
  • If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19.

Note: If you test positive for COVID-19, you are exempt from testing for 90 days.

Vaccinations
If you have not been vaccinated, or are ready for your booster, call the Student Health & Counseling Center at 262-595-2366 to schedule an appointment, or visit www.vaccines.gov to locate a vaccine clinic near you.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Renee Kirby, Director of Student Health, Counseling & Accessibility Services, at kirby@uwp.edu. We are not yet sure what the Fall semester will bring, but we will continue to monitor the transmission of the virus in our region. Stay safe and healthy and have a great summer.
Commencement - Saturday, May 14, 2022
Dear Faculty and Staff:

Commencement is a special occasion in the lives of our students, their families, and guests. This year, Spring Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022. There will be two ceremonies; the College of Business, Economics, and Computing, and the College of Arts and Humanities will convene at 9:00 a.m., followed by the College of Natural and Health Sciences and the College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies at 2:00 p.m. Both ceremonies will take place in the DeSimone Arena.

Our keynote speaker is Wes Saber, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of HARIBO of America – producer of the #1 gummi in the U.S and a generous supporter of UW-Parkside. Wes is an international leader with experience developing global enterprises around the world. Our attending regent will be Regent Tracey Klein.

As always, we look forward to showcasing our faculty and staff and hope you will participate. To join in the processional, and/or to reserve your robe, please R.S.V.P. to Julie Lee via e-mail at julie.lee@uwp.edu or 262-595-2261, by Wednesday, May 4. Please indicate to Julie whether you will be participating in the morning and/or afternoon ceremony.

Plan to join the processional line-up in the Sports and Activity Center (SAC) at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. (Special seating is reserved near the stage for faculty and staff who are processing.)

Please refer to the following link for the current Covid-19 guidelines - https://www.uwp.edu/rangerrecovery/, which we will adhere to for the spring ceremony.

Thank you for your commitment to our graduating students and their continued success. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Rob Ducoffe
Provost and Vice Chancellor

Commentary | College Matters: We Must Sell the Value of a College Degree

Rob Ducoffe - Provost and Vice Chancellor
I was the first in my family to attend college. It may not surprise you, given I serve as provost of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, that I believe in the value of a college degree. I also think we need to do a better job selling the value of college to citizens in Southeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

A college degree offers convincing returns such as better career prospects, higher earnings, and improved health and well-being over one’s lifetime. Yet there is growing debate over the value of college as young people increasingly question whether earning a degree after graduating high school will be more beneficial to their futures than working a full-time job.

Calling all Emerging Leaders!
The Alan E. Guskin Center for Community and Business Engagement is looking for emerging leaders at UW-Parkside to join the 2022-23 cohorts of the center's local leadership programs. Leadership Kenosha and Leadership Racine are professional development programs that connect participants to community organizations, issues, and leaders in education, business, nonprofit, and government sectors, building their network while developing essential leadership skills. The nine-month program starts in September and applications are due in June. If there is someone in your department whom you would like to recommend (or if you are interested yourself), please reach out to Debra Karp or Amy Garrigan in Community and Business Engagement, by May 31, and they will share the next steps.
PHOTOS FROM THE WEEK
She Kills Monsters
She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and ’90s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.
Retirement - Sandy Moats & Joy Wolf
Congratulations to Dr. Sandy Moats & Dr. Joy W. for receiving Emerita status at their retirement reception on Thursday, April 28.
