Digital Accessibility Drop-In Hours

Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1-4:30 pm, Wyllie L140-141

Do you have questions about what the new federal digital accessibility rule means for your role on campus? Are you confused about how to access training or have a question related to your particular area of work? Would you like to learn more about upcoming training and support opportunities available in the fall semester?

Please join the members of the Digital Accessibility Work Group at Wyllie L140-141, the computer labs adjacent to the Book & Brew near the library, and we’ll be here to answer your questions and walk you through your first steps in the lab. Light snacks will be available. For more information about digital accessibility and available resources, please visit this website or watch your email for further training opportunities.

Ranger Welcome Volunteer Opportunities

Ranger Welcome

It is hard to believe it is August already and that we will soon be starting the fall 2025 semester! Our Ranger Welcome program is set to kick off Sunday August 31 with Move in and runs until Friday September 5. Ranger Welcome is the oldest campus tradition at Parkside and the week is packed with events and resources to welcome new & returning students to campus. In order to ensure these programs run smoothly, we need your help!

Volunteers are needed throughout the week for a variety of tasks including the following:

  • Ask Me Tables: Greeting students on the first and second day of classes and helping them find their way to classrooms and answering questions.
  • Move-In Help: Greeting and welcoming students and families at the move-in check in station, checking ID’s, and handing out welcome packets.
  • Parent/Guest Hospitality Tent: Greeting and mingling with families as they move students into Ranger Hall and Pike River Suites. Handing out water bottles and snacks.
  • Kick-Off Speaker: Helping with wayfinding to the Main Stage Theatre for our Kick-Off Speaker, Aaron K. Wilson.
  • New Student Welcome Party: Helping with distributing t-shirts, snow cones, popcorn, and general crowd control.
  • Walk Your Schedule: Walking students through the academic buildings to help them find their classrooms prior to the first day of classes.
  • Welcome Tables: Taking first day of school photos with cut-out props and handing out fruit cups. These tables are next to the Ask Me Tables in the Rita & Student Center, but also go into Ranger Hall & Pike River Suites.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A044BA4AB2CA5FF2-57778760-2025/

For your time, if you are volunteering for an Ask Me Table, you will receive a FREE green Ask Me shirt if you do not already have one. If you are volunteering for a different event, you will receive a FREE green I Picked Parkside t-shirt if you do not already have one. T-shirt pick up will happen on Thursday August 28 and Friday August 29 in Admissions & New Student Services (Student Center D105) from 8:30am – 4:30pm. You will also receive additional volunteer instructions on Monday August 25 regarding your volunteer role, such as where to report and what to expect.

Admissions & New Student Services greatly appreciates your help in making Ranger Welcome a success! Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you all for your time and consideration!

Foster Academic Success by Supporting Student Wellbeing

Supporting students’ mental health and well-being is an important part of fostering academic success. Including a brief mental health and wellness statement in your syllabus can help normalize help-seeking behavior, reduce stigma, and connect students to the many free, confidential resources available at UW–Parkside. Even a single sentence can make a difference in letting students know they are not alone and that support is accessible. We encourage you to select one of the sample statements below to include in your syllabus for the upcoming semester or create one of your own.

Example 1

Your well-being matters to your success. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, I encourage you to reach out. UW–Parkside provides free, confidential counseling and wellness resources on campus and online. Find them on the Mental Health and Counseling Services website.

Example 2

We all face challenges that can affect our well-being and ability to focus on academics. You are not alone—UW–Parkside has free, confidential counseling and wellness services to help. Learn more at the Mental Health and Counseling Services webpage, in Ranger Resources on Canvas, or in the Navigate App.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Renee Kirby, Director of Student Health, Counseling and Accessibility Services or Amber Handy, Associate Vice Provost.

SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT

UW-Parkside Receives Over $320,000 for Green Infrastructure Project

By: Emily Reed, UW-Parkside Sustainability Coordinator

Funding will support innovative stormwater management system to protect Pike River watershed and create educational opportunities

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside has been awarded a $207,426 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Sustain Our Great Lakes 2024 program. This funding, combined with a $26,395 match from the Parkside Foundation and an $89,000 grant awarded by the Fund for Lake Michigan to the community partner Root-Pike WIN, brings the total project funding to $322,821.

The project will implement a regenerative stormwater conveyance (RSC) system on the UW-Parkside campus, the first of six initiatives outlined in the university's Green Infrastructure Concept Plan. This system will feature engineered bioswales with native vegetation designed to capture and infiltrate stormwater runoff from campus parking areas before it reaches the Pike River, a direct tributary to Lake Michigan and currently listed on the EPA's impaired waters list.
