UW-Parkside Student Honored as Newman Civic Fellow 2024
|
Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has named the student civic leaders from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico who will make up the 2024-2025 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. Alejandro Solis, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, was named as a member of the cohort.
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program that recognizes students who stand out for their leadership potential and commitment to creating positive change in communities. The fellowship is named for the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders, who was a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education. In the spirit of Dr. Newman’s leadership, each fellow is nominated by their campus president or chancellor, who is invited to select one exemplary community-committed student from their campus each year.

Pregnant and Expecting Parents in the Classroom:
Rights Under Title IX
| |
|
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), 20 U.S.C. §1681 est seq., is a Federal Civil Rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities.
- Should a pregnant student have specific classroom needs (e.g. larger desk, elevator access, ability to make frequent trips to the restroom, or other), faculty, staff, and other university personnel are required to comply.
- Any absences related to pregnancy or childbirth must be excused for as long as medical personnel deems necessary; this includes medical appointments.
- Students returning to class must be allowed to return to the same academic status as before the medical leave began and given the opportunity to make up any work missed during the leave. This includes an opportunity to make-up “class participation” points that the student missed by virtue of not being in class.
It is important to note that pregnant or parenting students are held to the same level of academic standards and must meet the learning objectives that have been set for the course. Students must work with the Accessibility Services Office and their faculty to determine reasonable accommodations that will allow them to complete all work and achieve course outcomes.
If students have any questions or concerns, they may contact Dr. Renee Kirby in the Accessibility Services Office, kirby@uwp.edu

Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) Updates
|
Workday Go-Live Revised to 2025
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved a revised timeline for the Administrative Transformation Program Workday implementation. Go-live is now scheduled for July 2025, revised from July 2024. End-user training will begin in March 2025.
The revision will provide adequate time to prepare for a successful implementation. We will continue to partner with ATP as we get ready for the transition to Workday.
ATP will standardize finance, human resources, and research administration processes, such as payroll and expense reporting, across the UW System. To learn more about Workday and subscribe to the ATP Touchpoints newsletter, visit the ATP website.
| |
What Is ATP?
The Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) is on a mission to rebuild finance, human resources, and research administration systems at every institution within the University of Wisconsin System. The goal is to reduce the complexity of the current administrative environment and refocus valuable staff time on UW’s mission of education, research, and outreach.
To make this vision a reality, we’re working with people across the UW to standardize processes and implement new, best-in-class technology to support these essential functions.
Technology
To standardize business processes and integrate our systems, ATP will implement Workday and Huron Research Suite to replace HRS, SFS, and hundreds of ancillary systems across the UW.
People
ATP's success depends on knowledgeable staff who apply their time, talent, and expertise — both on and off the program team.
Process
Our business process redesign work is based on a tiered governance structure and tested methodology that includes faculty and staff from across the UW System.
Watch the latest ATP video: What’s Changing: Moving from UDDS to Workday Organizations
The newest video from ATP, “What’s Changing: Moving from UDDS to Workday Organizations,” explains how Workday organizations will provide a new structure for Universities of Wisconsin business processes.

Sustainability Spotlight: Make a Difference this Earth Week by Gardening for Wildlife
|
When looking for plants to brighten up your yard this spring, consider drawing inspiration from sustainable landscaping efforts taking place in garden beds on UW-Parkside’s campus. Collaboration between UW-Parkside’s Facilities Department, the campus Land Management Committee, and local watershed partner Root-Pike WIN has helped create a long-term plan to transition flower beds from annuals to low-maintenance native perennials. These beds demonstrate sustainable landscaping practices aimed at reducing water consumption, fertilization, and the resource-intensive process of frequently replanting annuals.
For Parkside Day, celebrated on April 10 this year, volunteers supplemented existing flower beds with perennials native to Wisconsin. The chosen plants boast useful qualities, ranging from drought tolerance to deer resistance, and species were selected to provide colorful blooms from the onset of summer well into the fall. This spring, UW-Parkside was also awarded a grant to expand its community garden and create a pollinator patch. This will create a source of seeds to propagate on campus and supplement into flower beds in the future.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
