Evening Programs
ESIA naturalists will be giving evening program talks at campgrounds in the Eastern Sierra for July and August every Saturday from 7-8pm. All are welcome to join- even if you are not staying at the campground!

Evening Bird Outing
in Lee Vining
Thursdays at 5 pm
Every Thursday until September 14, join an ESIA naturalist for a sunset bird outing at Mono Lake's County Park and Boardwalk! While walking down to the lake through a gradient of habitats, you will get to see and hear a diversity of birds. This free walk is less than one mile and on level ground. Bring binoculars if you have them!

Panum Crater Tours
At Mono Lake
Fridays from 10 am to 11 am: Every Friday until September 15, an ESIA naturalist will be leading an interpretive walk up a small, young volcano! This tour will explore the geology of the Mono Basin. The walk is one mile and includes some elevation gain. Meet at the trailhead.

Wildlife Tracking
with Phil Johnston
Join professional wildlife tracker and mountain lion researcher Phil Johnston for a day in the woods learning to read the stories of wild animals through tracking. Phil has over a decade of experience teaching tracking and is certified as Senior Tracker through Tracker Certification North America. Come learn to identify the tracks and signs of the many charismatic creatures who call the eastern Sierra home. Email gena@esiaonline.org with any questions.

Ancient Bristlecones
walk with a naturalist
Sundays from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm: Join an ESIA naturalist to learn more about the ancient bristlecone pines at Schulman Grove! Meet in front of the visitor center. The walk is roughly one mile long at 10,000 feet. This free program is held weekly in July and August, except July 23.

South Tufa Tours
Daily at 10am, 1pm, and 6pm. These free tours are offered by the Mono Lake Committee, Mono Lake Volunteers, U.S. Forest Service, and California State Parks.
Additionally, the Mono Lake Committee offers weekend canoe tours.

Latino Conservation Week
July 15-23, 2023
During this week, community, non-profit, faith-based, and government organizations and agencies hold events throughout the country. From hiking and camping to community roundtables and film screenings, these activities promote conservation efforts in their community, and provide an opportunity for Latinos to show their support for permanently protecting our land, water, and air.

Wildflower Walks
with Inyo National Forest Botanists
July 29th from 8:30 am to 10:30 am: the Wildflower Walk will take place at Horseshoe Meadow! Check the Events section of the U.S. Forest Service-INYO National Forest Facebook page for more details. Depending on snowmelt and phenology, the exact location for each event will be updated as the date gets closer. There will be one more Wildflower walk in August.

October 27th to 29th: SAVE THE DATE - The 8th annual Eastern Sierra History Conference will be held in Bishop at Cerro Coso Community College.
Registration opens July 14!
The Eastern Sierra History Conference seeks to enhance awareness, enrich knowledge, and generate recognition of the diverse and complex heritage of the Eastern Sierra region.

Meet Chris Hamilton
Welcome to the team Chris!
Chris is working as a Visitor Services Specialist at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center. Chris is a college student at Cal State Monterey Bay majoring in global studies. He has spent time backpacking and climbing in Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra. One of his favorite things about the Sierra is the access to so many different landscapes and all of the passionate, vibrant people these landscapes bring together.

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Visitor Center at Schulman Grove opened on June 14th! It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Read more below about the Ancient Bristlecones and get more information to plan your trip on our website. | |

The Owen's River Gorge was closed in June for riparian habitat flows. As a reminder- swift water is a serious safety hazard. Respect closures and use caution as runoff from this winter's snowpack continues to create high, fast moving water.

Wolverine Sighting!
If you haven't heard the news, a wolverine was spotted three times this spring in the Eastern Sierra! Over the last 100 years, there have only been two confirmed wolverine sightings in California, so this is quite exciting news!
The wolverine was first spotted in Big Pine, then Mammoth Lakes, and later in Tuolumne Meadows. "Wolverines can travel great distances, making it likely that the recent sightings are all the same animal," says CDFW Senior Environmentalist Scientist Daniel Gammons.

Fun Fact: The wolverine’s scientific name is Gulo gulo, which means “glutton” in Latin.
