Words matter, MBEXers, and thanks to the Cambridge Dictionary, we have a few thousand more to choose from. A total of 6,212 new entries have been added for 2025, ranging from delulu (short for delusional) to work spouse (don't worry, I'm not asking who yours is on the jobsite 😉). Even RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) made the cut, which feels like a big win for construction vocab.
Here at MBEX, we're no strangers to "staying power" (one of the dictionary's requirements in choosing which words get added). After 137 years of serving our members, I'd argue that MBEX deserves its own entry. Until then, we'll stick with what we do best: keeping you connected, informed, and supported. Skibidi to that 🎉 (Oh yes, skibidi was added, too 🤦)

Five Quick Things To Know & Do This Week:
1.) Update MBEX's Address - Please update your records and make sure you're mailing us at the correct address. Our office address is now 3800 American Blvd W, STE 780, Bloomington, Minn., 55431.
3.) Read the Latest - The construction industry lost 7,000 jobs in August, per Associated Builders and Contractors. Nonresidential construction employment decreased by 1,300 positions, nonresidential building lost 3,300 jobs, and nonresidential specialty trade lost 200 positions. Heavy and civil engineering added 2,300 jobs last month.
4.) Mark Your Calendar - Project Build Minnesota is a small nonprofit that we, MBEX, helped create. PBM's goal? To attract hard-working youth into the construction industry. Join them on November 11 & 12 at the Renaissance Hotel in Bloomington for the Construction Talent Acquisition Conference.
2.) Track These Projects - On September 2nd, DEED announced $4.2-million in business expansion funding for three projects across Minnesota: Boston Scientific (Maple Grove - $2,660,000); Louis Industries (Paynesville - $500,000); and West Fraser US EWP (Solway - $1,077,535). These projects are expected to create or retain 587 jobs.
5.) Be Warned 🤭 - This tool isn't here for your pickup lines.

Why attend? Networking within your industry isn't just about swapping business cards; it's about building relationships that last. Here are three reasons why you'll want to come and network with your fellow members and industry peers:
1.) Strengthen Your Circle
Networking helps you create trusted connections who can support, recommend, and collaborate with you on future projects.
2.) Stay Ahead of the Curve
Conversations with peers often spark fresh ideas, insights, and trends that keep you competitive in an ever-changing industry.
3.) Boost Your Visibility
Simply showing up reminds people who you are, what you do, and why you're a valuable part of Minnesota's commercial construction community. (We also have event sponsorship opportunities, helping further boost your company's visibility.)
Step away from the office, enjoy a relaxed afternoon with your peers (bring a friend or two from your office), and invest in your future --- one handshake at a time.
| | Megaproject Spending Growth Keeps Total Construction Up | | |
Nonresidential starts in July hit $69.8-billion -- down 14% from June's record high, but still riding strong momentum from megaprojects. Big builds in data centers, manufacturing, and sports / convention centers have pushed nonresidential spending up nearly 15% year-to-date.
Office construction (driven by data centers) leads the pack, soaring 88% this year, followed by manufacturing (up 66%), and sports / convention centers. Civil projects are growing more modestly, with airport work up 35% and tunnel projects up 21%. On the flip side, residential remains soft, with single-family down 12% and multi-family down 8% so far in 2025.

Construction Employment Update:
Significant Revisions to Job Growth was Drastically Slower in Recent Months
The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently issued some revisions, and they weren't great news for construction.
Job gains for the first half of 2025 were cut nearly in half --- from 35,000 down to just 19,000. July only added 2,000 more jobs, making it one of the weakest stretches we've seen in years. Most of the growth happened early in the year, with just 7,000 jobs added between March and July. Residential sub-trades took the biggest hit after revisions, showing a net loss of 10,000 jobs instead of the small dip originally reported.
Even with slow hiring, construction pay is holding strong. The average hourly wage hit $39.69 in July, compared to $36.44 for the broader private sector. Construction workers are also putting in more hours, averaging 39.1-hours a week versus 34.3 across all private industries. Put those together, and construction employees are taking home about $1,552 per week. That's a $302 edge, or roughly a 24% pay premium, compared to the average private-sector worker.
Megaproject Growth Supports Nationwide Growth Figures
So far this year, megaprojects have been the star of the show.
Through July, there have been 39 megaproject starts across the U.S., totaling $115.6-billion. Nearly 40% of that money is tied to industrial work, led by the massive $25-billion Taiwan Semiconductor Plant in Arizona. Civil projects make up about 30%, with tunnels leading the way, while commercial projects take another quarter of the pie at $27.2-billion, most of which is being driven by data centers. The rest, about 5%, comes from institutional and mixed-use projects.
Megaprojects aren't just big --- they're reshaping the whole industry. In July, they made up 21% of all nonresidential construction spending (a record high), compared to a pre-COVID average of just 12%. Year-to-date, spending on megaprojects is up 58% from last year, adding $42-billion to the books. Without them, total construction spending would actually be down 3.5% instead of up 3.7%.
But...Here's The Catch
Megaprojects aren't work that every firm can chase. They're massive, complex, and often concentrated in the South and West. More than 80% of megaproject spending in the last year happened in those regions, leaving smaller or regionally limited firms fighting over a shrinking pool of other opportunities. It's a reminder that while megaprojects are keeping the numbers strong, they don't tell the full story of the industry's health.
Nonresidential Regional Construction Starts
Regional trends in nonresidential spending are showing a pretty mixed picture this year.
On the West Coast, growth slowed sharply, dropping from nearly 12% in June to just under 6% in July. Meanwhile, the Mountain region is booming, up more than 90% year-to-date, thanks largely to megaprojects. Conditions in the Plains and Midwest remain tough, with most areas reporting declines, while Texas and its surrounding region bucked the trend with a 23% increase. The East South Central region has the steepest drop, falling more than 23%.
Along the East Coast, New England and the Middle Atlantic continue to show solid growth, up 41% and 9% respectively, though the South Atlantic slipped into negative territory after peaking earlier this year. Nonresidential building activity is also highly concentrated. The Mountain region alone has grabbed nearly a quarter of all megaproject spending, driving a massive 166% jump in nonresidential building there. West South Central and New England followed with increases of 36% and 35%.
Civil work, on the other hand, is spreading the wealth more evenly. Seven of nine U.S. regions are up year-to-date, led by New England (up 49%), the Middle Atlantic (26%), and the Midwest (24%). The South Atlantic is the outlier here too, with a 22% decline through July.
For MBEX members, these national swings are a reminder to keep an eye on regional trends closer to home. With the Midwest seeing slower growth overall, federally funded civil projects and infrastructure investments will likely continue to be a steady source of opportunity here in Minnesota.

Looking Ahead
With an eye on the rest of 2025, megaprojects will likely keep driving the industry's numbers, but that growth won't be spread evently across all regions or firms.
With hiring still sluggish and tariffs threatening to push material costs higher, it's a good time for MBEX members to stay sharp. Keep a close eye on civil and infrastructure opportunities, which are proving more stable than private markets, and consider strategies to manage cost risk, whether that's revisiting contracts, diversifying suppliers, or locking in pricing when you can.
The takeaway? Adaptability will be key. Staying informed and proactive now can help you turn uncertainty into opportunity in the month ahead.

| | Minnesota Awards $236M for Water / Wastewater Projects | | |
The Minnesota Public Utilities Authority (MPFA) announced more than $236.4-million in grant and loan funds for water infrastructure projects in 18 cities.
This round of funds will support improvements to water and wastewater systems, including lead service line replacements, water filtration systems and sewer reconstructions, and new wells or treatment plants.
The highest-funded projects in this round of MPFA awards include:
City of Duluth - $62.8-million
To replace lead service lines with copper lines in the Lincoln Park, Central Hillside, and Fairmount neighborhoods, and along Chester Park Drive Alley, Raleigh Street, and London Road.
City of Fairmont - $38.2-million
For two projects. One project will replace two 14-million-gallon ground storage reservoirs with two 2-million-gallon reservoirs. The second project will plan, design, and construct improvements to the city's existing wastewater facility as well as upgrading an additional facility.
Metropolitan Council - $32-million
To finance existing and future wastewater improvement projects.
City of Annandale - $20.1-million
To construction a tertiary filtration building with tanks, chemical feed equipment, controls, piping and a new grit classifier and pump.
City of Blue Earth - $19.6-million
To install a reserve-osmosis treatment system in the existing treatment facility, enabling the city to reduce salt discharge from in-home water softeners and decreasing treatment facilities' chloride concentrations.
City of Aurora - $15.5-million
To construct a new filter and operations building, renovate existing buildings and upgrade electrical and mechanical systems.
City of Minneapolis - $10.5-million
To replace more than 1,000 lead service lines with copper.
City of Lewiston - $10.2-million
To convert batch reactors to extend aeration activation sludge. The project will also install SCADA systems on lift stations and replace portions of sanitary sewer mains.
The funding is primarily sourced from the MPFA's Clean Water Revolving Fund and the Drinking Water Revolving Fund. Both programs contribute to Minnesota's efforts to enhance drinking water quality, comply with state and federal requirements and build reliable water systems in communities in need of water improvements.

JOBSITE SAFETY
🦺 2025 Construction Refresher on OSHA Updates, PPE, and Lessons Learned
Fall isn't just for kids heading back to class --- it's also a perfect time for crews to sharpen their safety skills. Think of it as a seasonal refresher course for the jobsite: the latest OSHA updates, a PPE tune-up and lessons learned from real-world incidents. The real exam comes when the unexpected happens --- and preparation is always the right answer. (For Construction Pros)
TARIFFS
⚖️ Trump's Tariff Powers Face Legal Setback. What Now?
In the span of just 72 hours, what had once seemed like a durable, if controversial, pillar of Trump-era economic policy began to buckle. Federal courts delivered rulings against the administration's use of emergency powers, while half a world away, India emerged as an adversary in a swelling trade war that now threatens to redraw the map of global commerce. On August 29th, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit handed down a 7-4 decision that cut deep into the legal foundations of Trump's tariff program. The court ruled that the administration had "overstepped presidential powers" and gone "beyond that delegated by IEEPA." (Inside Lighting)
WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION
🚧 How Gender Bias Still Builds Barriers for Women in Construction
Walk onto any construction site today, and you'll likely see hard hats, steel-toed boots, and maybe, if you're lucky, a woman or two among the crew. But don't be fooled. While the equipment and technology have evolved, one thing remains stubbornly stuck in the past: sexist attitudes and outdated practices. Even though I [author Lauren Walker] have put in the work and climbed the ranks to MD, I still see the same invisible walls that blocked progress when I first started. And if we keep pretending the problem has been "mostly solved," we're part of the reason it hasn't been talked about enough. (Real Business)
LABOR & WORKFORCE
📖 Don't Let Know-How Walk Off The Job: Strategies for Keeping & Sharing Knowledge with an Aging Workforce
If your bench feels thinner every year, you're not imaging it. More than 1 in 5 construction workers are 55 or older, which means a big slice of your most experienced people are at or near retirement. When they leave, so does decades of skills and knowledge. The good news: there are practical ways to capture that knowledge, keep veteran workers engaged longer and ramp up the next generation faster --- and you can get started today. (CONEXPO CON / AGG)
COMMERCIAL PLANNING | ECONOMIC REPORT
🏠 Construction Weighs Tariff Hopes, Doubts in H2 2025
Steel, aluminum, copper, and a host of other inputs today carry hefty import duties as a result of the president's policy. The price increases have vastly slowed construction spending across the country. Tariffs now sit firmly in the construction economy as more than just a temporary political experiment. They're impacting jobs both underway and those still in planning. Amid that backdrop, two views of the levies have coalesced for contractors and construction economists: one where tariffs help build domestic economic momentum, and hence spur more construction, and another where they simply add to building costs. | | Victoria Development to Bring Bank, Coffee Shop & Medical Offices Near Downtown | | |
Read more on Minneapolis - St. Paul Business Journal
Headwaters Development is planning a combined bank-coffee shop and medical office building near downtown Victoria, representing yet another project seeking to build in and around this west-metro suburb's core.
The developer plans to build an 11,500-square-foot building with drive-thrus that will house a Hometown Bank branch and local coffee shop chain Mocha Monkey, according to city documents. They also plan to construct a two-story, nearly 20,000-square-foot medical clinic and office building. The proposed user is Ridgeview. The project also proposes 137 parking spaces.
The 4.13-acre vacant site is located south of Highway 5 across from Commercial Avenue, down the road from downtown Victoria.
The project requires a rezoning, comprehensive plan amendment and conditional-use permits.
The Planning Commission recommended approval of Headwater's latest plan and is slated to go before the City Council this week. If approved, the development team is expected to start site work this fall.
Headwaters is working with HTG Architects (Hopkins) and Landform (Minneapolis) on the project.
