Understanding the IEP
for Families

This presentation provides families/parents and caregivers an overview of the process for developing an Individual Education Program (IEP) using a collaborative approach. The training provides a review of the areas of the IEP and the information that a parent, family and/or caregiver can share with the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) or Committee on Special Education (CSE) regarding their child's performance and disability related needs.

Families will come away from this training with an understanding of the components of and IEP and the role that the parent has in its development.

This 6 module parent training series is intended to help families promote positive and effective parenting behaviors which, in turn, will promote children's social and emotional development and address the challenging behavioral and mental health needs of children (ages 3-8). This series is an adaptation of Positive Solutions for Families developed by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL).

Session 1: Managing Challenging Behavior: The Power of Positive Relationships

Session 2: Managing Challenging Behavior: Play as a Powerful Parenting Practice

Session 3: Managing Challenging Behavior: Determining the Meaning of Behavior

Session 4: Managing Challenging Behavior: Teaching Children What to Do

Session 5: Managing Challenging Behavior: Strategies to Promote Positive Behavior

Session 6: Managing Challenging Behavior: Problem Solving and Family Routine

***Registration is open to parents, family members, and caregivers whose children are approximately 3-8 years of age. Only 1 registration is required to attend the 6 sessions. Additionally, registrants are expected to participate in each of the 6 sessions, as each session's content builds upon the other.***
