PILOTS TO THE RESCUE NEWS

August is National Dog Month, and PTTR celebrated this holiday by rescuing more than 70 homeless dogs and cats from multiple U.S. states including North Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. A few of these missions were critical because they involved several litters of newborn puppies. Thanks to our incredible volunteers and loyal partners, these pups won’t have to spend the first years of their lives in overcrowded shelters with poor conditions.

In this month’s newsletter, you can meet some of the dogs we rescued in August and get to know one of our newest volunteers on a deeper level. You can also learn a helpful new tip for teaching your adopted dog how to be less aggressive during playtime!

Thank you for your support in making these missions possible! 💙

One Lucky Kentucky Dog Finds a New Home in NJ! 🌲

Pictured here is Tank Man, one of the 11 dogs PTTR Pilot in Command Jason Oliver rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky on August 1st. The dogs were supplied by the Knox-Whitley Humane Association and received by our longtime partners at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Accompanying Jason in the cockpit for this mission was proud rescue dog mom Nikki Marie, who is also known by her 6,800+ social media followers as the "Cuban Carrie Bradshaw."

We are delighted to report that just a few weeks after this mission, Tank Man was adopted by his new family! This mission was a top priority because it prevented six newborn puppies from developing emotional or behavioral issues in overcrowded shelters with little space. Below, you can see a collage of some of these adorable pups, all of whom will now get the resources they need to grow up in healthier environments.

PTTR Rescues 3 Litters of Puppies and Their Moms

With the help of co-pawlet Daniel Baumel, PTTR Top Dog Michael Schneider rescued 6 adult dogs and a whopping 17 puppies from multiple overcrowded shelters in Western Georgia on August 18th. Making this mission possible was the collaborative efforts of Saving Georgia Dogs Rescue, the Haralson County Animal Shelter and the Polk County GA Animal Adoption and Recovery Shelter.

Once Michael and Daniel touched down back in Essex County, New Jersey, the dogs were received by The Second Hand Dog Rescue, Inc. in Rochester, New York. Below, you can meet two more paw-ssengers from this massive mission: Chance, on the left, and Daria, the proud and protective mother of 9 new puppies!

Volunteer Spotlight: Nikki Marie 🔦

This month, we’re spotlighting Nikki Marie, who participated in her first PTTR mission earlier this month. For more than 10 years, Nikki has been advocating for the safety of rescue animals through numerous NYC-based organizations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she finally decided to foster a rescue pup to see if she was ready to become a pet parent. Like many volunteers, Nikki couldn’t help but fall in love with her new furry friend, who she named Marty McFly. As you can see below, Nikki and Marty have been inseparable ever since!

When she isn’t spreading awareness about the importance of rescuing, Nikki works as a travel guide and regularly shares her passion for exploration with her massive online following. In the coming years, she aims to participate in more PTTR missions while using her platform to encourage more people to adopt and not shop!

Adoption Tip of the Month 💡

Does your dog tend to get a little too aggressive during playtime? It’s common for dogs to start growling, barking, or even biting out of pure excitement. After all, dogs often nip at each other when they’re playing.

But this isn’t fun for you, and as a pet parent, you must visibly make this clear to your dog. So, when your dog becomes aggressive, show that you are unhappy by saying “NO!” In a firm voice before walking away and ignoring your pet until they calm down.

Eventually, your dog will learn that you will not engage them when they behave too aggressively. When your dog behaves well during playtime, be sure to reward them with a treat and plenty of physical and verbal praise. This will teach your pet to associate gentle play with rewards.
