Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play, Spring Awakening reimagines the classic with a driving rock score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Slater. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a group of teenagers as they awaken to their own desires and struggle against a repressive society that keeps them in the dark. By turns explosive, tender, and deeply moving, this cult favorite is a cathartic journey through the joys and tragedies of youth, reminding us how fragile—and resilient—growing up can be.
Disclaimer: Spring Awakening contains mature subject matter that may be activating for some audience members. The production includes depictions and themes of suicide, sexual assault, domestic violence, abortion, and sexuality. Viewer discretion is advised. The 2025 Staged Reading Festival returns for its second annual celebration of bold, original storytelling! This year, we’re proud to present nine compelling new works in staged reading format—each selected from an impressive pool of 292 submissions. These pieces were chosen for their unique voices, powerful themes, and ability to spark conversation and connection. Organized by the Dorris Staples Theatrical Conservatory apprentices, the festival is a hub for community, diversity, and belonging. Join us in this exciting continuation of our annual festival!
