A 38-Year Commitment Continues
Oakland A’s physician Dr. Allan Pont, pictured above with former third baseman Eric Chavez, has been with the A’s organization for 38 years.

The Doctor is in -- the A’s Official Physician

by Amaury Pi-González

Dr. Allan Pont has been the Oakland Athletics official team physician for 38 years and is still going. I could not help but ask him, as a doctor, about his experience of a Pandemic which we have lived under for over a year now.

Dr. Pont: “I never seen anything like this. I was born in 1946. I remember polio was a serious issue -- we never went into the water… I ran a hospital when we had a flu epidemic. We might have 20 people sick but nothing like this. In 1918 we had the Spanish flu which could had originated in Kansas.”

About becoming Oakland's team doctor, “I taught at Stanford, took a job at what was the Children’s Hospital in San Francisco when Walter Haas bought the team. Roy Eisenhardt hired a consultant to look for a new doctor. Charlie Finley had 13 doctors and they rotated and Roy, who knows everybody, wanted a Stanford-trained doctor.”

He mentioned this is a very small field among all 30 Major League Baseball clubs, with 60 orthopedics and 60 medical doctors.

In your opinion, what is the biggest innovation in baseball as far as medicine is concerned?

Dr. Pont: “The Tommy John surgery is the biggest change. It’s an amazing phenomenon. Then we had the steroids era (pause)... I testified in the Mitchell Commission during the steroids but the Tommy John surgery, like one-third of pitchers.”

Dr. Pont specified he is an internist, not an orthopedist, but when asked about the myth that young kids in high school should not throw a curve-ball because it could tax their arms, he said, “I don’t know if that is true, especially if you are strong. It is all about grip, not motion, but I do not really know what causes Tommy John. Might be too much pitching.”

The A’s physician is a big baseball fan. “I was born in Montreal, Canada and lived there until 1974. As a seven-year-old I would take the bus to see the minor league Montreal Royals compete. I remember players like Sandy Amorós, Tommy Lasorda, Don Drysdale and became a Dodger fan. I remember one year during an exhibition game with Jackie Robinson playing for Montreal.” Doctor Pont also mentioned historic Jarry Park in Montreal.

We wish the Doctor a good season and we thank him for the courtesy of giving this interview. Who was the first team doctor? In the second century AD the first ‘team doctor’ was Claudius Galenus (c.130 AD to c.210 AD). He was appointed to be a doctor of the gladiators in the Pergamum Kingdom. The physician only became involved if there was an injury.

Stay well and stay tuned.

by their players; i.e. MVP, Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award, but who is the only pitcher to win both the Rookie of the Year and the

Many of the 140 million fans who would have attended live sporting events in the last year have taken a seat in front of the television and other digital devices as the pandemic has kept arenas and stadiums empty or with greatly reduced in-person spectators. The same is true for cultural and arts entertainment venues. Despite the physical divide, fans and audiences are getting involved because innovators are exploring new strategies of engagement. Focusing on spectator sports, this course will explore the creative realities of fan-immersive experiences based on new sports platforms such as FCF (Fan Controlled Football) along with fantasy sports, avatars, video streaming, virtual ticketing, and more. We also will look at the future long-term interplay of business economics and fan engagement, and how—if and when live spectators can physically re-enter venues, even at reduced capacity—industry innovators will be exploring new technologies to enhance the experiences for the virtual and live spectators of the world of sports and entertainment. Scheduled as guest speakers for this course are Jamie Pardi, co-founder and CEO, FanCompass; David Yorke, co-founder, Umpires Media; Sohrob Farudi, co-founder and CEO, Fan Controlled Football; Mindi Bach, senior director of sports PR, Oracle; and Ted Griggs, former executive
at NBC Sports Group.

Andy Dolich has held executive positions in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. He is a co-author of 20 Secrets to Success for NCAA Student-Athletes Who Won't Go Pro, a co-host of the podcast Life in the Front Office, and a columnist

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff
Fernando Valenzuela
Valenzuela, with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is the only player to win the Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in the same season, leading the Majors with eight shutouts as Fernandomania became a
cultural phenomenon...

FWIW: Only two players have been named Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same year; Fred Lynn in 1975 and Ichiro Suzuki in 2001, both in the American League. Of course one had to be from Boston!
No team has ever won the three awards in one season.
