Hawaiian Electric’s Customer Programs
Contribute to State’s Clean Energy Goals

Hawaiʻi’s clean energy transformation is providing a boost to economic activity in the Aloha State, creating jobs, fueling innovation, and attracting private investment.

Hawaiʻi gained national attention in 2015 when it became to the first state in the nation to announce a 100% clean energy goal. It built on that pledge a few years later when it committed to a carbon-free economy by no later than 2045. As a result of these policies the clean energy sector of Hawaiʻi’s economy is experiencing robust growth that is expected to continue for years to come. The U.S. Energy & Employment report published recently by the Department of Energy estimated that Hawaiʻi’s renewable energy sector generated nearly 10,000 jobs in 2021, many of them in the construction industry.

The latest addition to Hawaiian Electric’s growing portfolio of customer renewable programs is Battery Bonus, which provides incentives for customers who install battery storage with their rooftop solar systems. Battery Bonus, launched on Oʻahu in 2021, was upgraded in March to include additional financial incentives and was expanded geographically to include customers on Maui.

Battery Bonus offers residential and commercial customers an upfront cash incentive, bill credits for energy exported to the grid and a monthly peak capacity payment based on the size of the customer’s battery system. Hawaiian Electric worked with HawaiÊ»i’s solar industry to add the new incentives and make other program improvements.
