ROOTED IN FAITH, TRADITION, AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Borgia Family,

Wow, what a fantastic homecoming weekend this year! Sept. 15 and 16 saw hundreds of alums and their families return to campus to celebrate Homecoming. Friday’s parade led to a big win for our football Knights, who also celebrated their history with the state title team from the 1993-1994 school year on campus for a reunion. The team also presented coach Dale Gildehaus with a championship ring to commemorate that special season. The classes of 1973, 1983, 1993, and 2003 all celebrated reunions over the weekend, while our current students were on campus for their Homecoming celebrations with the ‘We Got the Beat’ theme.

Now that Homecoming is behind us, up next is a massive day for our school - Borgia Giving Day, on Tuesday, October 10, in celebration of the feast of St. Francis Borgia. This is one of our major fundraising initiatives each year that helps us keep our tuition among the lowest of any private Catholic school in the St. Louis region. Your support of this day is a major reason why we can offer our students a top-tier, faith-grounded education. As always, one dozen Borgia cookies will be yours with a donation of at least $100, and I am happy to share with you that we are going old-school with the cookies, with the dough being made by our friends at Guffey’s Pizza, the original creators of the awesome-tasting Borgia cookies!

I thank you for supporting our school and for considering supporting us again on October 10. We know we can always count on our Borgia family.

B-O-R!

Sincerely,

Matt Schutte
President

RAFFLE TO BENEFIT THE CHRIS LOCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND AT
ST. FRANCIS BORGIA HIGH SCHOOL
This raffle was put together to honor Chris Locher's life and keep a memory of him going for years to come. For those of you who didn’t know Chris, he was unfortunately diagnosed with colon cancer and passed away in March of this year. But for those of you who knew him, you know that Chris was outgoing. He liked spending his personal time at auctions, playing golf, supporting his nieces and nephews at sporting events, and working at his and his wife’s antique store, Bushel and a Peck. Growing up, he attended St. Francis Borgia High School and enjoyed playing soccer. Chris then went on to attend the University of Missouri–Rolla for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. After graduating from Rolla, he went on to work for MoDOT. After working for MoDOT, Chris worked at K.J. Unnerstall Construction, where he became Vice President and obtained his Professional Engineering License. Chris loved building jobs close to home in the Washington community that he felt improved the lives of the people in it. With this scholarship, we look to continue Chris’s striving for knowledge and hope this award will help someone else make a difference as Chris did.

ALUMS IN THE NEWS
Paige Hulsey '08
Paige Hulsey '08 has a new book coming out soon! Here's what Paige had to say about her new upcoming book. "I’ve been telling stories since I was in Mr. Bitzer’s Video Productions class at Borgia. I still tell stories as an anchor/reporter at KMOV in St. Louis and as a mom, reading countless bedtime books to my two toddler sons. Now I’m making my other storytelling dream come true – publishing my first children’s book. My Borgia classmates who met my dad, a professional bass fishermen, when he came to talk to Mr. Lahay’s rec class, probably aren’t surprised to hear this story is all about fishing."

Based on many true storiesA Bad Day Fishing is the adventurous tale of a young boy and his pup who set off for a day of fishing but are met with an afternoon of trouble, including broken gear, unpredictable weather, and their own bad luck. Still, the boy perseveres and, in the end, learns even a bad day can be good when it’s spent fishing. Young readers will follow along as the duo experience the anticipation, frustration, and eventual triumph of a big day outdoors.  A Bad Day Fishing will be released in late Fall 2023. You can preorder now at www.paigehulsey.com. Shipments should arrive in time for Christmas.

CLASS GIFTS TO OUR SCHOOL
The Class of 1971 Gift in Memory of John Straatmann '03.
When John Straatmann '03 passed away last spring, the SFB Class of 1971 rallied around classmate and father of John, Gerald Straatmann '71, along with his family, to raise funds to purchase picnic tables in John's memory. With a generous response, we were able to purchase two tables, which are used every day by our students. What a great way to remember John and all who knew and loved him.
Pictured sitting are John's family, from left sister, Sarah Morrison; father, Gerald Straatmann '71; mother, Kathy; and brother, Anthony '12. Standing from left are Kim Daugherty '71, Larry Engemann '71, and Gary Kleekamp '71.
Pictured front row are members of the Class of 1962, from left are Julianna (Maune) Gildehaus, Jane (Richardson) Dill, Diane (Elbert) VanBooven, Sarah (Devine) Freeman, and Diana (Wilmesher) Tobben. Back row from left are Buzz Kliethermes and Ron Elbert.
The Class of 1962 Gift to Our School
In celebration of their 60th Class Reunion last year, the SFB Class of 1962 took up a collection to purchase picnic tables for the student patio located right outside of the cafeteria. These tables, used by our students every day at lunch, are not only useful but also add cheer with their bright blue and gold color scheme. Thank you to the Class of 1962!
